Reporter good morning, george. This is a major setback and a big embarrassment. The first big embarrassment for the australians in the search for this missing 777. Theyve wrapped up the underwater search. And say they do not believe that the vehicle, the 777, is actually in that area. This means the black box pings the australians thought they heard, apparently are not real. On wednesday, or this morning, the australian transport safety board said, quote, in its professional judgment, the area can now be discounted as the final resting place for mh370. The place theyve been searching for weeks. It is an embarrassment for the Royal Australian navy because its acoustical Lab Confirmed those springs as from the black boxes. And sonar scanners will not be back in the water probably until august, probably, to look for the wreckage. Why the delay . Reporter they dont have the equipment in place yet. Right now, a chinese ship is doing a general topographical map of the ocean bottom. Then, they want to bring in a contractor to look for wreckage. But they have to make a deal with the private contractor to do that. So far this morning, they havent made a deal. And once they do start to do the work, george, it could take a year to look over this area for that wreckage. Another year. And still a mystery. Okay, davis, thanks very much. Wow, increditly frustrating especially for the families. Now, to the deadly rampage in Santa Barbara and new insight into the killer. The parents of elliot rodger, giving their side of the story through a family friend. And, amy, you spoke to this person. So many people are asking what could have led this young man to take the lives of 6 innocent people and injure 13 others. So, yesterday, i spoke with close family friend and author, Simon Astaire who knew Elliott Rodger since he was a little boy and witnessed his parents struggle to raise him first hand. When i saw them yesterday, they have diminished in size. Theyre crippled with pain. You said they are mourning the innocent lives that were taken, more than their own sons life. Its true. Every part of it. Talking about that. Not about their son. Reporter horror, not just gripping the u. C. Santa barbara campus friday night, but also overcoming Elliott Rodgers mother. She was mile as way when she first laid eyes on the the m manifesto. She read the first four lines. And it she knew something was wrong. She automatically went to youtube. She watched 30 seconds of the video. And immediately rang elliots father. And she said, you have to look at this youtube video, retribution. It all has to come to this. And he said, we have to get there. We have to get to Santa Barbara. As theyre driving up there, they know intrinsically, somethings wrong with elliot. And then they start to hear us on the radio, the news slashers, that a black bmw was involved, and the mass shooting. Reporter rodgers parents, unable to face the cameras yet, offering a written statement, instead. We are crying in pain for the victims and their families. It breaks our heart on a level that we didnt think possible. The feeling of knowing that it was our sons actions that caused the tragedy can only be described as hell on earth. Was elliot close with his parents . You know, he was a very removed, remote child. Now, i remember on one particular occasion, i went to a party of theirs. I walked out. And he was there on the street, all alone. I thought he was the loneliest person ive ever seen in my life. He was an odd child. He hesitated. He shook when you met him. Do you know if elliot was on any medication . I understand he was on xanax in the last six months. And i think doctors have offered to put him on medication before. Like a year ago. And i dont know the legal side, you see. But i know he refused to take it. On a daytoday basis, would you say elliots parents were concerned about him . Yes. Every day. Every day. I think their fears fundamentally, deep down, was that he was going to take his own life. Elliots mother had reached out before. Policed showed up to his apartment. And now, theres an investigation whether or not the correct actions were taken. Theres no blame to the police, whatsoever, because elliot fooled everyone for a very, very long time. He fooled me. He fooled his family. He fooled everyone who saw him. He was a tragic figure. And now, when i talk about him, i talk about him knowing what he did. He is, in many ways, a monster. And simon told us that elliots father said he spoke to his son on thursday. That was the day before the shooting. And elliot had told his father he would be joining his family for lunch on saturday, the day after the shooting. And oddly, the father said that his son seemed happier than usual. Really . And he had no indication that anything was wrong. An incredibly tragic story. Such a chilling portrait. It is because no one knew. He really kept it hidden. He did not display any anger ever in his life. So it was so shocking to him. Were going to move to the growing scandal at the v. A. A damning, new report confirms that nearly 2,000 veterans were, quote, lost, in the health care system, never put on a waiting list for care. And the outrage grew on capitol hill. Abcs jon karl is in washington. Jon, the calls for v. A. Secretary Eric Shinseki to resign have been climbing by the hour. Reporter thats right, george. The drum beat is getting louder. Theres 58 members of congress, many of them democrats, who have called on shinseki to go. Alltold, 1,700 vets were found to be on secret waiting lists at the phoenix v. A. And at risk of being lost or forgotten. According to the v. A. s internal watchdog, the veterans were forced to wait an average of 115 days to get a first appointment. While the hospital kept secret lists to conceal how long it took to get care. And it gets worse. Investigators say the problem is systemic throughout the v. A. Now, some 42 v. A. Health centers around the country are under investigation. Do you solemnly swear reporter at a hearing last night, members of congress unloaded on senior v. A. Officials, demanding answers. The only thing thats clear right now is that theres 40 brave soldiers that served their country proudly that died while waiting on a list. Whats unclear is how much further this goes. Reporter the calls for secretary shinseki to resign are louder than ever. These allegations are not just administrative problems. These are criminal problems. Reporter democrats are calling for shinsekis head, as well. President obama promised accountability after meeting with shinseki last week. The defendant became angered and agitated after mr. Deabreu smiled and did not apologize. Reporter even speeding through a red light to catch up to them. The defendant leaned out of the drivers side window of the suv and stated, yo, whats up now . And the defendant meetly fired phi rounds from a. 38 caliber revolver into the victims car. Reporter then, bragging about the killings. Hernandezs defense attorney taking exception to the prosecutions handling of the case, accusing them of grandstanding. But for now, Aaron Hernandez, facing two murder trials and potentially life behind bars. Hernandezs next court date in this case, is june 24th. But the odin lloyd case will be tried before this. There can be dramatic differences in how well they work, depending on the type of fire. We investigated the Response Time to some smoke alarms. Abcs gio benitez has that story for us. When buying a smoke alarm, you may not know theres two types on the market. Ionization, and photoelectric, which are quicker in detecting smoldering fires. 90 of homes have only ionization alarms. Doug believes he paid the ultimate price. He lost his daughter, julie, a senior at Miami University of ohio in a house fire in 2005. 11 students were sleeping when a smoldering fire broke out. Eight survived. There were 17 ionization smoke detectors in the house. Its not like the landlord didnt care about fire safety. He had no idea there was a difference. Reporter this is the outfit that won 23yearold keli kryfko one of her many pageant crowns and sashes. But kryfko, the reigning miss south texas, says she hasnt always looked like a beauty queen. Nine years ago, at just 14 years old, she tipped the scales, weighing around 230 pounds. I had a learning disability. And i just felt that i was inferior to others. I would really depend on food just to kind of comfort me. Reporter her aha moment, failing a physical fitness test in the eighth grade. I overheard some girls say, can you believe that the fat girl couldnt do any of it . Reporter thats when kryfko decided to change her life. I took a stand and said, you know, enough is enough. And i made a difference. Reporter within a year and a half, she shed 70 pounds and has since lost another 30. Her new number on the scale, 129 pounds. Making small, implemental changes, eating less fried foods. Exercising down the road, about a year or so into my transformation. Everything that keli did was textbook. And every step she took along the journey, it broke her free from those psychological chains and emotional eating. I think everybodys okay. I never let my kids have any type of toy guns. No squirt guns, no cap guns, no toy guns. No toys that represent a killing machine. I understand the feeling. But realistically a water gun is not a killing machine. Stacy its all about parental involvement and guidance. Water guns are a lot of fun. We all played with them and most of us did not grow up to be violent criminals. Not a lot of debate here. I wanted to swap that out. But, alberto, well talk about that later. Next. Oh, wow. A mesa, arizona, high school, under fire for dedicating two pages in its yearbook to teens who are pregnant or parents. Many saying there are other accomplishments that should be celebrated in the yearbook. And they glamorize teen pregnancy. Whats your take . I think its fine. I have no problem with the idea. These are probably kids who have a lot Harder High School experience because they were pregnant. Because they had kids. And i think celebrating them in the yearbook is okay. And the school is very clear that they were not glamorizing them. It was more of just showing that these are kids, under some really tough circumstances, theyre still in school. Trying to get that education. I think thats is something to celebrate. I can see where others would really interesting story. But youre 0 for 2. I know. This one lets quickly go to social because thats where we do get disagreement, yeah. Although, dorothy agrees. I dont think it glamorizes teen pregnancy. It shows that everyone can overcome all obstacles and make the most of their lives, no matter the circumstance. And then, we have kathy, are they saying its an accomplishment . Teen pregnancy doesnt seem to be something a school would want to highlight. Women driving while pregnant. Were not going to have disagreement. Im going to say it at the outset. Its interesting. I hope we have a good discussion. But i dont think its going to be a lot of disagreement. Women driving while pregnant, apparently getting into far more accidents, according to a new study in the Canadian Medical Association journal. The second trimester, apparently the most dangerous. They called it, their quote, not mine, foggy pregnancy brain. So should any driving restrictions be placed on pregnant women . I say, dont let them drive. No. Im just kidding. We have to have disagreement here. So, i have to say something. Pregnant women are prone to anger. Just letting you know. How would you enforce that . Come on. What if youre driving yourself to the hospital because youre about to give birth . Its interesting its the second trimester. Apparently, the first trimester theyre particularly careful. Not quite as careful in the second trimester. But in the third trimester, they get more careful again. You just cant move that much. Youre just very much in one place. I would say after you have the baby, you get baby brain. Are we going to restrict all mothers . I know that. I had baby brain. We have one study caveat on this one. According to the gas station attendant, the driver and his passenger were changing a tire and talking to the man who walked by. All three appeared to be drunk. When the man passed out the passenger asked the attendant to call 911. The driver apparently panicked over the possibility of getting a dui, backed up and ran over the man. All over the world. And it was really refreshing that a lot of younger people were raising their hand and saying, i want to know more. That they realize that we were and the beautiful thing is she has such a legacy. We can read her works. You can reread them and inspire a new generation. I will not be here tomorrow for 50. I wont be here for 50 because ill be at the mlb civil rights luncheon, the beacon awards to be at her honor. We cant wait to hear about that. Now, to ginger. The final check of the weather. How did you get into that costume . How hard was it . I had to take it very slowly. The first time i got into it, i had two different sets of horns. I had horns i could pop off because i kept banging them into things. When they were wrapped in leather, i couldnt. I was this 7 1 2foottall thing, with my staph. And i kept getting my staph caught in my cloak. It all went terribly wrong. Well, well. Reporter they thought it hurt to do your cheeks. Thats so sweet. It didnt hurt. It was glue. Such great makeup artists. Reporter they were also fascinated that your daughter was in the movie. They want to know, did she know she was acting . Yes, she did. Reporter she did . Yeah. She knows what mommy and daddy do for a living. The first day she acted was when she had to catch the butterfly. And i wasnt in the scene with her. And i think that was more complicated. These are hardworking hearn americans that have to do this. Its pulling them down gradually, when we should be pushing them up. Were one of the last western countries that takes so much time to clear a check or transfer your money. The great thing about this problem is that its solvable.
