We are getting troubling details, the coast guard telling us the ferrys captain was one of the first to escape abandoning ship just 32 minutes after the distress call. And on the deck, as passengers fought to survive, some using the listing vessels balance con nice like lad ders. Others, frantic, as helicopters moved in, fighting a ticking clock. The announcement told us we should stay still. But the ship was already sinking. Reporter and this morning, a disturbing claim from survivors. They say the 475 passengers on board, mostly High School Students, were told to stay put by the ships crew, rather than to evacuate on to life boats. This morning we learned, only 1 of 46 lifeboats were deployed. Translator i screamed for 30 to 40 minutes in the ferry. Things were falling. And people were sliding down the ship. And from a daughter, dad, i cant walk out. The corridor is full of kids. And its too tilted. Soon, the ships electronic doors and gates would stop working. With nearly 300 passengers still missing this morning, many of them are believed to be trapped inside. Overnight, as the ferrys captain surfaced in shame, saying, i dont know what to say. Officials pumped oxygen into the ship to give possible survivors a lifeline. Then, the search and rescue effort, suddenly postponed due to weather. Another Devastating Development for families. But amidst the grief, stories of heroism and hope emerging, too. A 58yearold man pulling nearly two dozen students to safety by and this, the rescue of a brave 6yearold girl, capturing the heart of a grieving nation. Just a short time ago in geneva, secretary kerry wrapped up a meeting with his russian counterpart. They did shake hands this morning. But it does not appear that russia has agreed to call off its supporters or units in ukraine. But frightening and escalating tensions in ukraine itself this morning. Three prorussian militants killed by ukrainian troops. The first death as ukraine tries to take control. The russian militants were part of a group of 300 men, armed with stun grenades, bats and molotov cocktails, trying to seize a Ukrainian Military base, george. Vladimir putin speaking out, this morning as well, defiant as ever. Reporter yes. An annual tradition. A marathon callin session on russian tv. But it was more of a cheering session when putin told the audience that it was nonsense that Russian Forces are in ukraine right now, although he did confirm that the socalled little green men in crimea were russians. Those were those wellarmed troops with no insignia, saying they are helping to protect ethnic russians there, george. And so many troops on the border, as well. Now, to the man accused of that bomb scare on the Boston Marathons finish line. This morning were learning more about the suspect who is in custody. Just feet away from the finish line, where tens of thousands will cross on the Boston Marathon on monday. While he sits facing multiple charges, his mom, claiming he had Mental Illness and speaking out on his behalf. Facing a judge wednesday morning, 25yearold kevin ed e d edison, stood silently, a far cry from the scene he made the night before. Edson, seen here wearing all black, and a veil, following a ceremony at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Police say he told them he had a rice cooker in his backpack. As a precaution, the bag was blown up. On the oneyear anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing. Reporter edson, covered in paint in his mug shot, is now facing six separate charges, including threatening battery, and possession of a hoax explosive device. He has pleaded not guilty. The judge setting eddsons bail at 100,000 and ordering him under undergo. A psychiatric evaluation. Prosecutors say he told police, the whole thing was performance art. Allegedly saying, quote, i knew what i was doing, the performance got the best of me. His defense, arguing he had a history of psychiatric disorders and was off his medication. He does need some assistance to stabilize himself mentally. Reporter edsons mother telling abc news, her son, quote, has been battling mental issues for several years. And, quote, to have this happen on the oneyear anniversary of such a horrific crime, is unfathomable. Edsons brother also telling us, quote, my brother is a different kind of sick. What he did at the finish line is absurd and shameful. She went on to say, quote, i have two sons who struggle with Mental Illness. And ive had to constantly fight for 12 years to get them the help they need. She said she has run the marathon herself, six times. And had this message for those running next week. Quote, run strong and enjoy the wonderful feeling as you cross that finish line. Meanwhile, marathon organizers say they are stepping up security for mondays event. Police will number in the thousands. And speaking of tighter security. You know those socalled bandit runners that typically run in racers like the Boston Marathon . Theyre people that run without numbers. Well those people will not be allowed to run in the Boston Marathon. And if they do they may be removed from the course. The impact sending one of the rigs plowing into a restaurant. Abcs nick watt is there. Reporter terror and panic in an l. A. Afternoon, captured on a cell phone camera, screams fill the air. A man is trapped by a fire truck that smashed into a popular dumpling house in suburban los angeles. Customers and employees trying desperately to free him. All of the employees in the back, it feel like earthquake. Reporter two fire trucks both responding to a nearby fire, collided at an intersection, sending one careening into the corner restaurant. 15 people were hospitalized, including customers, passersby and firefighters. One person is said to be in critical condition. But remarkably, there are no fatalities. Almost nothing is left of lus dumpling house but rubble. The only stroke of luck, this happened at midafternoon when there were only a handful of customers in the restaurant. Late last night, the fire truck was pulled from the wreckage. The blast knocked down two walls and ignited a fire that spread to nearby brush. No word on the cause. Encouraging news in the battle against diabetes. News this morning, i learned that searchers saw something in yesterdays dive. Theyre going back to that area right now with the bluefin21. Were taking you down to the bottom of the ocean where they are looking with that submersible. Mapping the ocean floor. Its deep. 15,000 feet. And theyve now adjusted the bluefin so it can go deeper than its maximum, which is 15,000 feet. As you can see, this drops off and some of the areas are much deeper. They have this area of interest now. And they think it will be safe to send the bluefin back there and take a look, robin. A full 16hour day. How much of the area, the bottom, has it been able to map . A lot, actually. They were going to concentrate on a 15squaremile area. But already, the bluefin has mapped 35 square miles. It goes back and forth, sort of like a lawn mower. It was on one of the runs yesterday, that something of interest was seen. Thats the concentration for today. The bluefin down there as we speak. So the Oscar Pistorius trial is now on a twoweek recess. Earlier, the lead prosecutor was punching hole after hole in the testimony of the defenses forensic expert. The witness called by the defense, roger dixon, brutally crossexamined by gerrie nel, a. K. A. , the bull terrier. Thats the problem. You want to give the court a version on an ethic youre not an expert. Reporter the blade runner skitting with his head down and his hairs against his ears, barebare listenly listening. His own witness clearly contradicting him in court today. Im giving what i observe and interpret. Im not saying that anybody else is right or wrong. Reporter dixon disputing pistorius recollection about where specific items in his bathroom were when he shot and killed model reeva steenkamp. Like this photo of the magazine rack, which pistorius says may have been moved. When the deceased fell, the magazine rack was there. Reporter the prosecution, working to poke holes in the defenses claim that steenkamps body was at an angle when pistorius shot her, not facing the door, arguing with the athlete. Like the state alleges. Also, trying to counter pistorius account that his bedroom was too dark to see steenkamp, when he claims to have heard intruders. Now questioning dixons findings that his room was dark. Why not if that is if he have to recreate it, why wouldnt he do that . I was unaware that the balcony light was on. Reporter dixon is no expert and unqualified to make his claims. The cross examination was so brutal, that dixon took to facebook to complain that his credibility was coming under attack. Thanks. Lets talk to abcs chief Legal Affairs anchor. Dan abrams, lama just talked about the facebook post. Why would he do that . Incredibly dumb thing to do. Why would he do this . He goes on to say its difficult to get belief in those who will not listen, et cetera. Not only does it make him look defensive. But judges hate this stuff. He hasnt completed his testimony yet, and going on facebook whining about the way hes getting treated. When you get involved in a highprofile trial and youre the expert for the defense and youre not ready for crossexamination and attacks, you ought to not be there. I mean, the bottom line is, he should have expected this kind of attack, and it shouldnt come as a surprise to him. They spent a lot of time on the timing of the four shots. And hes trying to argue theres no timing between the shots. Theyre immediate. Really important difference. The defenses position is that the shots go one, two, three, four. Not giving him any time to stop and think. The prosecutors allege that theres two shots and another two shots. That would be important particularly if pistorius may have moved in an effort to get a more accurate shot at reeva, in the second set of shots. If theres any pause here, thats a problem for pistorius. It gives him time to stop and think. And pistorius doesnt seem to put up much of a case yet. Whats the impact of the twoweek break. I dont think it will make much of a difference. This judge has probably already decided what shes going to do. Shes heard the evidence from the prosecutor. Yes, more evidence is coming from the defense. But as a practical matter, in her quietest moments, if you were to say to her, to be completely honest here, shes probably decided already what shes going to do. We have to see. Now, to the baffling death of a college star wrestler. At first it appeared he took his own life. But his parents are speaking out now, saying they dont believe thats what happened. I know youve been looking into this, amy. Thats right. The parents are speaking out at this hour, as the details of the young mans final hours are only adding to the mystery surrounding his death. Police say 20yearold dammion heard, scholarship wrestler at Colorado State university, was found dead in this field. This death certificate obtained by abc news, listed his cause of death as strangulation by hanging. His parents say police told them he took his own life. But according to his parents, the circumstances are suspicious. Never had issues with anxiety or depression. Reporter in fact, his parents say, their sons phone records said he planned to meet a girl in the morning following his disappearance. And dammions dad says Surveillance Footage shows him fitting up his saturn just minutes before his death. It seemed fishy. Reporter his parents say they were told by police their son was involved in a fight the night before his death. Police tell us they are waiting on autopsy results. An earlier press release did not mention suicide. But stated, no suspects are being pursued at this time. And the investigation into dammions death is ongoing. Friends sharing with abc news how special he was. He would brighten up any room he stepped in. Reporter while dammions parents say they plan on getting their own investigator. You would want to investigate the physical altercation to see if somebody wanted to harm him. Mentioned harming him. Reporter until then, the mystery continues. In that case, he pled guilty to stalking. Serving 132 days in jail. But robertsons tenure at qvc was marked by more terror. As other men were also obsessed with her. In one case, a man reportedly traveling to the home of a different qvc host with engagement and wedding rings strapped to his chest, in hopes of meeting robertson. In a Statement Released to abc news, the former miss tennessee says, we enjoy the connection we have with our audience from being open and sharing our personal stories. Unfortunately, one of the downsides to this is that people can take those connections too far and cross personal boundaries. One public personalitys private life of fear. In her statement to abc, robertson said, despite the incidents, she wants to focus on positive aspects about her career. Things like her clothing line. A new Study Reveals that exercise can make your skin look years younger. And researchers say that working out works even for people who dont start exercising until later in life. Now, a surprising, new Study Suggests exercise might be one heck of an antiager. Researchers at ontarios Mcmaster University say, they found the skin of people over the age of 40, who exercise, resembled the skin of someone in their 20s or 30s, at least at a microscopic level. I dont think you can reverse true signs of aging. But it can make your skin have a better glow. Reporter the researchers used 29 male and female volunteers, ages 20 to 84. Half exercised three hours a week at a modest or vigorous level. The other half did less than an hour for a week. Thats what researchers saw that the skin composition of those of those who exercised more, appeared younger, at least under a microscope. There are some uncontrollable factors that will cause you to age. If your mother and father aged quickly, chances are you will age quickly. Reporter the researchers wondered if diet mattered, too. They got volunteers. At first, their skin was normal for their age. Then, they got them moving. Those volunteers jogged and cycled at a moderate pace. For about half an hour. And at the end of three months, under a microscope, the skin appeared as if it was at least 25 years younger. The researchers insist, they dont want to overhype the results. Now, were looking at the effects on skin. I like this. How about the exercise that researchers say you could reverse the effects of aging . This is a huge area of medicine. Antiaging medicine. Regenerative medicine. We dont know exactly how it happens. We know exercise improves blood flow. It and it releases substances that stimulate the good stuff and block the bad stuff. So its a winwin. Is there a specific exercise that you should be doing . Or how long you should be doing this. The good thing about this study is that any exercise worked. I tell my patients, some is better than nothing. More generally better than less. But you want to get out there and its never too late. You want to sweat. If you go outside, sunscreen. Absolutely. You dont want to tip the balance. To undo all of the good stuff. Sun damage, if youre doing a lot of exercise, not so good. Chlorine, i learned this the hard way. Former dancing with the stars cohost, samantha harris, announced just last week that she has been diagnosed with Breast Cancer and has decided to undergo a doublemastectomy. I had a chance to talk to her about how she made this decision and what it will mean for her and her family. Because of the treatment she and i are both undergoing right now, we wanted to meet in person. But we had to speak via satellite from los angeles. You have processed so much over the past few weeks, how are you feeling . Im feeling great. Had i not discovered this, i would have no idea i even have cancer because im operating at 100 . Clearly, the diagnosis takes its emotional toll. Lets talk about the time it took to get where you are right now. You and i had our mammograms a week apart. And you had an allclear. And yet, you find a lump. Even though doctors told you it wasnt cancer, you said, im going to keep investigating. Was it a gut feeling . It was a gut feeling. That and my mom in my ear, and my dad saying, see a specialist. It took my four months saying, this doesnt sit wright with me. Four months later, i had a needle biopsy and an mri right after we scheduled a lumpectomy. And the pathology in the operating room, no cancer. Im out of anesthesia, my husband is next to me. And i didnt take him with me to the followup with my surgeon because i didnt have cancer. That gives me chills. Thats something we also both share. We received our cancer diagnosis alone. How did you react . I start to realize, they keep saying carcinoma. That means cancer. I must have cancer. The tears started to well up in my eyes. I tried to stay focused. It wasnt until the surgeon left the room, all i wanted to do was crumble into my husbands arms. Youre a mom of two girls, where my thoughts went in the very first seconds. Oh, my goodness. Im going to fight this. How am i going to tell my two daughters . I know thats where my mind went. It went to a different place when youre a parent and have a diagnosis of this. You want to make sure all of the things youre present for. I lost my dad to colon cancer. He was just 50. And to have him not present when i got married, when i had my first daughter and then, my second, has been really hard for me. I always think, in the back of my mind, i dont want to not there there for my kids. How are your kids handling this . We wanted to tell them separately. My husband and i together. But separately. We could tailor them to their ages. You chose to do a bilateral mastectomy. It came down to chances. This is a sisterhood that you dont want to be part of. But the women i have met already are incredible women. Reading your story, and robins, gave me so much inspiration. And gave me hope. Hope that i, too, will get through this, as you are currently doing. And as robin has. And be stronger and a better person on the other side. And you know, samanthas story, we know is so important because this is about being your own advocate. And about crust trusting your gut. Sometimes that gets you to we both had situations where doctors dont know everything. And different doctors have different opinions. So, samantha found that out through her own tenacity. Its important to know your own body. I found mine through selfexam. I knew it was different. And what she is doing, and what she is sharing, and i know how difficult it is for her. But im sure, talking to you, amy just like i talked to you on the phone many times. She and i had several phone conversations because it is a scary path.
