Came out right at the start of the show after more than three decades saying it is time. He is going to retire next year, and what a mark he has made on our culture. Hes changed the landscape of late night. I mean, what are we going to do without those stupid human and stupid pet tricks . Right. The top ten lists. Its going to be so different. Thank you very much. Well hear from our jimmy dim el about this latest shakeup in late night. Thats coming up. Lets get to the breaking the tornado warnings. And warnings across the south. Still out this morning. Ginger zee is in the middle of storm zone in little rock. Good morning, ginger. Those storms blasted through here just hours ago. And now i want to take you live to the pictures from earlier this morning in texas. You can see the roof damage, pretty extreme, all the way up through parts of missouri and illinois. Now the storms have moved to the east and we have the radar picture from earlier where you can see the tornado watches, the boxes, all the way from kentucky to texas. Today will be another Severe Weather day in what has already been a very long night of Severe Weather. Reporter from texas to missouri. At least eight reported twisters. This was the scene outside mckinney, texas, just moments after a suspected tornado ripped through homes and pulverized trees. A family near farmersville had to be rescued from their demolished home. Oh, my god. Oh, my god. Oh, my god. Reporter in denton, texas, listen to this frightening scene inside a walmart. Oh, my god. Oh, my god. The ceiling. Oh, my god. Lets go. Reporter as hail the size of softballs ripped through the stores skylights. Oh oh, my god. Oh reporter people panicking hiding under shelves. Go this way. He wants us to go this way. Reporter running for their lives, an aerial view capturing the damage. The cars in the parking lot didnt stand a chance. Shattered glass everywhere. I dont even know what to do with the glass. Do i just sweep it off . Reporter in denton, the hail in this home raining down from the roof and piling up there on the front porch. And take a look at this. An ominous backdrop for a Minor League Baseball game in frisco, texas. And this was the scene outside st. Louis, missouri, after an ef1 tornado ripped through a suburban neighborhood splintering trees, demolishing cars. At least 275 Severe Weather reports, and thats just in the last 24 hours, more to come as we showed you. You want to show you the area that needs to be concerned, the southern great lakes to the gulf coast. Heavy rains, lightning, something well look for as we go through the next 12 hours and then well start to release. But its going to be unsettled in the northeast, which for you, has been not so much in the last couple of days. Well talk about that in the your nations weather. Amy . This morning were learning more about specialist ivan lopez, thats the man who went on that deadly rampage. Abcs david muir is live ott ft. Hood with the very latest. Good morning, david. Reporter amy, good morning. The question authorities here art ft. Hood are asking now is whether or not there was a confrontation of some kind in the moments before that shooting began. This morning, authorities believe the soldier who went on a shooting rampage at ft. Hood this week might have had an argument beforehand. There may have been a verbal altercation with another soldier or soldiers. Reporter but so far theres no proof say authorities. 34yearold ivan lopez targeted individual soldiers when he opened fire. [ sirens ] reporter meantime, a new window into the chaos, the Emergency Response as the 911 calls began pouring in. All units, we have a shooter. Currently on ft. Hood. Some people are escaping through windows. Reporter when the casualty numbers begin to mount. They are going to need to escort for blood. Is it a patient or is it a blood run . Its going to be a blood run. Reporter Sergeant Timothy owens mother says her son is among the dead. Very terrible that they had to shoot my son. He was a good person. Reporter as for lopez, authorities here on the base acknowledge he had Mental Health issues and had last been seen by a psychiatrist a month ago for anxiety and depression. But the pentagon insists there were never any warnings this was coming. No indication on the record of that examination that there was any sign of likely violence either to himself or to others. Reporter in fact, a Lieutenant Colonel at ft. Bliss where lopez was stationed before now revealing he was a good soldier, a rifleman who had only been reassigned recently because of health problems, though he would not say what kind. He wanted to stay in the army and the army said he was a good enough soldier to stay in. Reporter when he and his family moved to ft. Hood just recently neighbors telling us they seemed content. Reporter so you actually saw them and they looked happy . Yes, they seemed happy. Reporter but back home in his native puerto rico a family spokesman telling abc news lopez had been, quote, very upset over his mothers death from a heart attack and had been angry about the armys short leave so that he could mourn her. And that family spokes penn back in puerto rico said they had no idea that ivan lopez was seeking help for mental illness. Amy and george . All right, david, i mean, sometimes you just dont get the answer. Its so sad but you dont get to know why. Our heart goes out to those families. To the latest on the confounding search for flight 370 after almost four weeks nothing has been found. The black boxes are ticking down. Only days left before the batteries go dead. Abcs david kerley has been tracking this. Searchers using a technology which may be the last best hope. It is, george. This is the news this morning. Two of those towed ping locators are being dragged through the water listening for the last possible pings or ticks from those pingers on the black boxes. How do they know where to tow these hightech listening devices without finding debris . Well, they really dont. The head of the search says theyre taking their best guess. Of where the wreckage may be. Its a 150mile area inside one of these air search yaerts. Just 150 miles, very small. The rush is on because the 30 days on those batteries hits on sunday, george. Time is ticking. And is there any give on that deadline at all . Yeah, its the batteries are guaranteed to last for 30 days then they start to fade kind of like a flashlight when the batteries go. The signal is going to dim so theyll have to be even closer and have to be within a mile or two at this point. Theyll have to be closer after that 30day mark, george. Okay, david, thanks very much. One of them killed. The other injured. Both women are veteran journalists and abcs Muhammad Lila is there with the latest. Muhammad . Reporter ryan, a tragic morning here. Those two fe neal journal lists both shot at pointblank range. Anja niedringhaus and kathy gannon were visiting a Police Station when an Afghan Police man opened fire shouting god is great after he mercifully shot them in the backseat of a car. Anja was killed instantly and kathy was rushed to a hospital. The attack comes can as the taliban is ramping up ahead of tomorrows key election. Ryan, i asked kathy why she keeps risking her life. She told me that there are still so many stories that need to be told. Ryan . Thank you. Turning to the economy. Company hired workers at a solid pace in march creating 192,000 jobs. Reporter within 24 hours of Brendan Eichs promotion to ceo of mozilla last week, open rebellion. Employees publicly criticizing a 2008 donation he made to pass prop 8, californias antigay marriage bill that was later overturned by the u. S. Supreme court. One of them tweeting ive waited too long to say this. Im an employee of mozilla and im asking brendan eich to step down at ceo. At first, eich protested back telling cnet on tuesday, i dont think its good for my integrity or mozillas integrity to be pressured into changing a position. But then a powerful game changer. This week Online Dating site okcupid launching a digital boycott blocking access to millions of customers who tried to logon to the site using mozillas popular web browser firefox. It was a very powerful move for okcupid and pretty unexpected because of their i think 3 billion monthly page views 12 of that comes from firefox so for them to take that stand and say, hey, we dont want you using firefox, that was big and that got a lot of attention. Reporter eich appeared to bow under the pressure thursday handing in his resignation and saying our mission is bigger than any one of us and under the present circumstances i cannot be an effective leader. While he didnt address the okcupid boycott directly the Online Dating site feels triumphant telling abc news overnight its a great feeling to know that okcupids principled business stand is making a real difference in the world. Mozilla has apologized to its users saying it didnt move fast enough to engage with people once the controversy started. We turn to a startling Home Invasion and a 13yearold girl whose quick thinking saved her and her little sister. It was all caught on 911 tape and abcs gio benitez has the story. Theres men trying to break into our house and we are home alone. Reporter horror and heroism. This is the incredible 911 call made by 13yearold kylee as she and her 8yearold sister found themselves home alone with two alleged intruders. They were banging at the door. Which door . At my front door. Reporter the girls hiding in their bedroom closets as police say robert paul and amy holtz kicked in the door of their utah home and started ransacking it. Theyre now in the house. Okay, where are they at, upstairs . Yeah. I was having a hard time breathing because i was crying so much. Reporter kylee said she broke down but managed to keep calm while on the phone with 911 how many does it sound like, can you tell . Two. Okay. Can you hear them talking . Yeah. I knew my sister was in the closet and if he catches me hes going to catch her too so i had to think of her, not just myself. And so thats probably what made me keep my cool. Reporter incredibly both kylee and audrey remained hidden until police arrived, just as the suspects were fleeing the scene. They were arrested on burglary, theft and drug charges and yet to enter a plea. They went and trashed my bedroom. My wife and is bedroom. Im so proud of my oldest and even my youngest for what they did. Reporter as for little audrey, shes thankful for the quick thinking of her big sister. Im grateful that she saved me and that the robbers did not turn around. Oh, were thankful too. The two suspects are behind bars and stood no chance against kylee who said she learned how to handle the situation from her grandpa, parents and school. George, amy . Boy, she learned her lessons. And fans are shocked that the longest serving late night host is, in fact, calling it quits. It started out like the windup to a good joke. I said, when this show stops being fun, i will retire ten years later. [ laughter ] reporter but then the punch line made it clear this was serious. Im retiring. This is really yeah. This is you actually did this . Yes, i did. Reporter David Letterman announcing his plans to move on after 32 years of late night laughs. We dont have the timing of this precisely down. This is a remarkable story about a picture posted on facebook by a mom just saying, hey, heres my little girl thinking nothing of it but this picture saved her daughter from a rare disease, the doctors had misdiagnosed it and they didnt even see it but her friend did. Because of that picture. This is new. Its called fight church. Pastors taking on pastors in aggressive boxing matches. Why they say tough guys need jesus too. I cannot wait to hear about that. This is truly something. Well begin with that complicated manslaughter case out of washington state. Gale gerlach is on trial for shooting an unarmed man. Here is the twist. A man was trying to steal his car at the time. Will they find the shooting justified . Dan abrams after this from neal karlinsky. Reporter it was an otherwise normal morning in march last year when gale gerlach ran outside his spokane, washington, home to see his suv being stolen by 25yearold brendan kaluzagraham, shown here on his mothers facebook page. I just a guy just stole my truck. Reporter the reason gerlach is on trial this morning and not the car thief is what he failed to mention for another 45 seconds into that 911 call. Hed shot the thief killing him. Okay, where did the vehicle crash . Couple blocks south of my house here. On lee street. I dont know where he went. I dont know if hes still going or what. He leaned back. He pointed at me. I dont know what he pointed at but it scared me to death. Reporter gellach claims he fired in self defense, not as a form of vigilante justice. Hes not caring about the suv anymore. He sees something far more important than that. He sees this. Reporter prosecutors arent buying it trying him on a charge of manslaughter for killing the suspect with a single shot. This one in a million shot hit its target but could have hit anything else. Not just the shot itself, but the car. Reporter a key point for prosecutors is that they allege gerlach couldnt have seen the driver who was unarmed point anything through smoked windows and 60 feet away. Youll see that mr. Kaluzagraham was not turned facing mr. Gerlach as mr. Gerlach described but was, in fact, shot directly in the back of the head as he was facing forward. Reporter the question of whether gerlach feared for his life not just the theft of his car is critical. He pleaded not guilty. If convicted he faces up to ten years in prison. For good morning america, neal karlinsky, abc news, seattle. Okay, lets talk about this with abcs chief Legal Affairs anchor, dan abrams. Really sort through this because this is a tricky case. It is because as a legal matter, this selfdefense claim is pretty weak, right . The idea the guy is driving away in his car. Its a dirty car, all sorts of stuff in the back of the truck which probably prevented him at least the prosecutors say from actually seeing what the guy was doing who was driving the car. So the notion that he actually saw him turn around, point his finger or thinking he had a gun is unlikely. So where does that leave us . Its still a really hard case to get a conviction. So despite the fact that it is a legal matter, the selfdefense claim may be weak, the fact that he stole the car and that this guy is shooting after a guy who stole his car in spokane, washington, is going to lead it to be tough to get 12 jurors to convict beyond a reasonable doubt. Thats why you say its interesting, in some way the prosecution has already done its most important work. Jury selection, a case where its all about jury selection. To some degree the evidence is pretty selfexplanatory. We know what happened. Theres not a lot of debate about what happened apart from whether someone was turning around. The issue here is who is on that jury and prosecutors are going to tell these jurors, you must adhere to the letter of the law and yet what the defense wants is people who are going to say, yeah, you know, i can adhere to the letter of the law but this guy stole his car, you know, so i think its going to be really hard to have found 12 jurors who are willing to put aside the fact that the car was stolen and just look at this sort of in a vacuum which makes this a much tougher case for prosecutors than might otherwise be. Only takes one jury. Thats right. To hang him. Dan abrams. Thanks, guys. Now to a story about the power of social media and how facebook helped save a little girls eyesight after her mom posted a snapshot of her 3yearold daughter. Abcs Mara Schiavocampo is in social square and has the story. Mara. Reporter good morning, amy. You said it. The power of social media on full display. That picture got more than just a few likes, it also helped that mom get crucial medical advice catching a rare eye disorder in just the nick of time. When tara taylor posted this photo of her daughter on facebook, she had no idea that simple action would change her daughters life. Facebook ironically has been such a blessing in our life. Reporter the picture of 3yearold rylee got some shes so cute posts but her friend stacy carter noticed more than her adorable smile. She saw this white glow in rylees left eye. Stacy said her friends son had an eye disease with the same symptoms. Immediately, you know, sent her a message saying, hey, it could be nothing or, you know, there could be something really wrong with rylees eye. It was in the evening. Doctors offices were closed. We just kind of felt helpless there was nothing we could do. We were a little scared just because, you know, we didnt know what it was. Reporter sure enough her keeneyed friend was right and doctors confirmed she was going blind in her left eye from something called coats disease. Coats disease is a rare eye disease thats caused by an abnormal leaking of blood vessels behind the eye which can cause blindness. Reporter doctors say rylees case was advanced but after two surgeries theyve seen some improvement in her vision and if the disease was spotted any later rylee likely would be permanently blind in her left eye. Tara says she was shocked because there were no warning signs. We never noticed any symptoms that would indicate that we should go to the eye doctor. She actually can sit very far from the tv. She will look at her books. She does every activity that her sister does and no differently. Were back from school. Reporter the family thankful that sharing on facebook led to an eyeopening discovery. And here in the social square this time line shows just how quickly this developed from the time tara posted that picture to the time she got that medical tip, just one hour. They went to the doctor the next day and, you know, doctors say that Something Like this normally isnt diagnosed until it starts to affect both eyes. Amy, george. That is incredible. It looks like a flash. I wouldnt have noticed that as a mom. I would have thought it was my flashbulb in my daughters eye. Good for her. One hour they got it solved. Back to ginger down in little rock. That line of storms still marching across the nation, but the northern part add snow. Thats right n minnesota, parts of wisconsin, even iowa this morning its snowing. But you can see this video just north of minneapolis, anywhere from 2 to 7 inches. Some people with over a foot of snow out of this system. The spring snow there but now we want to look at the southwest. It will be milder, more settled and we will warm up in the next couple of days. Thats for Southern California but Northern California going to see showers.
