No distress calls, no bad weather, no history of mechanical problems, and no crash signs except oil slicks off the coast of vietnam which may or may not be related. This morning, there are only more questions. Did the pilots attempt a midair turn around. And what does it mean that two of the passengers were flying with stolen passports . We begin with Pierre Thomas whos covering the intriguing angle about the two passengers with the stolen passports. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning. So many questions today tantalizing and frustrating including the mystery of the stolen passports. Two men posing as an italian and austrian boarded the flight mh370. This morning, u. S. Intelligence and the fbi want to know, who they are and why they might have been on board. Sources tell abc news the story behind the two men is suspicious and could be critical. Were they drug smugglers . Terrorist sources or none of the above . The passports, im in touch with the International Intelligence agency. At the same time our own intelligence has been activated. Reporter authorities were blunt. Given the lack of evidence, terrorism cannot be ruled in or out. We are looking at all possibilities. Reporter Authorities Say theyve identified Surveillance Video from security cameras at the airport they will use to identify passengers aboard the flight. Those images will be compared to photographers of terrorism and criminal suspects around the globe. The Austrian Foreign ministry told abc news that one of the citizens supposedly on the flight was safe and sound in austria. The only austrian listed is christian kozel. Italian Authorities Say none of their citizens were on board either. The parents of one called his parents, to say their he was okay. Despite he was on the flight manifest. Both were stolen in thailand. While the u. S. Government has not discovered evidence of terrorism, the fbi and intelligence agencies are reviewing all the names and comparing them with relevant criminal and Terrorism Data bases. Malaysian Officials Say at least two other passengers are drawing scrutiny, but they did not say why. The fbi is planning to deploy forensic investigators to assist in the case but a lot of work is already under way. Bianna . And more about the two passengers with the stolen passports, how in the post9 11 world were they able to get on that plane . Is there a global data base where stolen passports are reported and can be checked on before they board . Reporter there is. The question it whether they were entered into the database, and did they bother to check. Sources tell me standards vary from airport to airport. And more baffling, one of the passports reported stolen two years ago. Thats right. Thanks to pierre. And now to the massive air and sea search in the south china sea. They have spotted two large oil slicks but no sign of the plane itself. In beijing, the intended destination, distraught families are waiting for answers. And abcs Gloria Rivera is there. Were they trying to turn around as part of the route. Really, here, the key is the black boxes and if they can find them and the secrets they contain. As you heard already, the search is on for the black boxes but this morning, we really have more questions than answers. This is the actual 777 missing. An aircraft with few maintenance issues but itdy appeared more than 36 hours ago. Here is what we do now. The 370, the red eye to beijing, took off on a sixhour flight at 12 41 in the morning. 40 minutes later, it flew out of the radar coverage area. Ten minutes later, the airline asays the crew reported their position. The last time they were heard from. How much longer they were in the air, or what direction they were headed is unclear. But this morning, Officials Say theyre investigating the possibility that the plane tried an air turn back. A literal turn around back to the airport. We know that the pilot, 53yearold zaharie shaw was experienced with the airline for more than 30 years. But there is so much we do not know. What was happening in the final moments . Those black boxes will tell us. They are presumably at the bottom of the south china sea. Locater beacons pinging for a month or so. At this particular place, its a little over 600 feet, that means they will be able to find it. That is not a terrible depth or thousands of feet or a rough bottom that will make a major problem. In another high profile disappearance, air france 447, the boxes were retrieved from the bottom of the atlantic, providing the answers as to why the jet fell out of the sky. Some are asking whether all the data should be beamed back to land rather than stored on the black boxes. This morning, the search and rescue crews are looking for wreck ge so they can start listening to the locater pings from the allimportant recorders. The americans want answers as well. The ntsb and officials from boeing have come together, poised as a team ready to fly to asia and assist in the investigation. They want to see the black boxes too, dan. Thank you. There are all sorts of reasons they would turn around. Perhaps something went wrong on the airplane. They wanted to turn around maybe for a maintenance issue. Its not unusual for an airplane to turn around. If theres a question about the safety of the airplane, the airplane will be turned around and sent back to the original destination. My question is this a we think they turned it around or maybe, or definitive clues. Im skeptical of this. Yet another one of the many Unanswered Questions surrounding this incident. David kerley raised something in the piece i want to ask about. In this day and age with so Much Technology at our disposal, why are the black boxes not transmitting information directly to land rather than us having to go to the bottom of the ocean to retrieve them every time . Its a legitimate question. That was raised after the air france crash. Off the coast of brazil. Why not transmit it through satellite links . So we always have track of where the aircraft are and the health of the aircraft. That is a question moving forward. Up to this point, its the question of technology, having the satellites in the right place. Paying the cost of having the data transmitted. Thats a costbenefit analysis. The terrifying moments when a stage collapsed in the middle of a High School Performance with dozens of students sent tumbling, taken to hospitals. Investigators looking into what went wrong. And we have more. Good morning. Reporter good morning, bianna. It was a scary and chaotic time for the dozens of girls performing on the stage when it collapsed. And also for the hundreds of family members in the audience looking on. Caught on camera. This morning, frightening moments as a stage collapses at Servite High School in anaheim, california. High school stage collapse. Reporter look again as the stage comes down. The stage the stage platform came down. It folded right in the middle of it, and the girls dropped, all the ones in the front dropped ten feet into the pit. Reporter the students were performing an annual musical theater challenge when the accident happened. Cell phone video catches the stage falls out from beneath the students. According to anaheim police, 24 students were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries, possible broken bones, bruises, scrapes. We are getting a handle on it and make sure we get it assessed and get the parents reunited with the children. Reporter they are still trying to determine the cause this morning. Investigators said the cause was likely just too many students on the stage. The students have been posting photos and as frightening as it was, they expressing relief it wasnt worse. Their incredible collision caught by a local photographer. This morning, a sky diver and a pilot have a miraculous story to share after they collided in midair. All of it caught on camera. As the shutters clicking away, i realized that im seeing something that is certainly spectacular. Right before impact, a small cessna plane flying toward a sky divers parachute as both come in for a landing. Then just before the ground, the nose of the plane slices right through the strings of the chute, sending the 49yearold john frost into the air before slamming him into the ground. And the pilot loses control. Crashing at a 90degree angle, the nose crunching into the cockpit. Obviously, when you see an airplane crash on the ground, you think, oh, my gosh, what happened . Reporter but for both men, the ordeal was far from over as the singleengine cessna tumbles toward frost. We enjoy seeing them bus there is a safety zone they are not supposed to be in. While its hard to watch, both the pilot and frost escaped with minor injuries. This is absolutely incredible that nobody, we dont have any fatalities here. Both the ntsb and faa are investigating it. The sky diver was released, the 87yearold pilot was a world war ii vet, and he was kept for observation. Im guessing they are both feeling lucky this morning. This fan turned fanatic, stormed the court to confront a coach. Watch closely. After a technical foul was called, university of california Santa Barbara student walks right on to the court. No one stopping him, and yells at the hawaii head coach. I have seen anything like that in 22 years of coaching. He was escorted out of the arena and later arrested. And just a week earlier, a melee between players and fans following utah valleys win over new mexico state. And its not just on the court, in february, Oklahoma State University Player marcus smart taking to the stands, shoving a texas tech fan after the two exchanged words. The tension between fans and the teams they love veering out of control. The culprit . Maybe the game itself. Fans are seated right on the court. They have access to the players and the coaches and officials. They feel like they are part of the action. Reporter and the blurred lines between the coaches, players and fans as security struggles to control. And security is key for keeping fans, players and coaches from fouling out. I would expect to see tighter security at march madness. Some of the things that have happened in the regular seasons are warning signs.
