Good morning, im Marci Gonzalez in for diana perez. And im Muhammad Lila in for john muller. We begin with breaking news this morning as a brutal deep freeze is gripping more than half the nation. More than 500 passengers are now stuck on three amtrak trains heading into chicago because theres so much blowing and drifting snow. Now, all three trains were stopped last night in the Northern Illinois city of mendota, about 80 miles west of chicago. Amtrak says the passengers are being kept comfortable and fed as workers try to reopen the tracks. We will stay on top of this breaking story throughout the morning. And to give you an idea how super frigid this air is water vapors now rising off Lake Michigan in chicago. Usually the frigid lake waters are much colder than the air but this morning the waters are actually warmer than the air above. Chicagos temperature yesterday set a record at ohare airport, 16 degrees below zero. Wow, further north on the lake, these dramatic photos shot by photographer thomas zakowski that captured how extreme the temperatures are. These lighthouses in the michigan cities of st. Joseph and south haven looking like a scene almost out of a disaster movie. They were captured in real life though on camera after a recent storm. And further east, parts of lake erie have completely frozen over. Close to 20 of the lake is now covered with ice and with snow. Abcs mary bruce kicks off our coverage right now. This city like so many others around the country is now bracing for this recordbreaking cold. Just when you thought it couldnt get any colder, a dangerous arctic blast is plunging temperatures to historic lows across the u. S. A lifethreatening, bonechilling, recordbreaking freeze. Im wearing long underwear. I feel like im going skiing but im not, im going to work. Reporter the unrelenting cold freezing eyebrows, icing glasses. Its called a polar vortex, a whirlpool of frigid arctic air bringing freezing temperatures to every state but hawaii. Polar vortex sounds pretty scary. 20 below, 30 below, 40 below, when you get that much it probably doesnt make a lot of difference. Reporter chicago residents renaming their city chiberia, colder there than in parts of siberia. It is reaching into the deep south records broken in texas, schools in atlanta closed. The snow, ice and wind still causing commuter chaos on the roads. Ooh. Reporter and the runways. Jetblue canceling all flights at four major east coast airports until later today. My frustration level is here. In case you want to know. Reporter the cold is also a serious danger. Frostbite can occur in just five minutes in these temperatures. The cold here in washington this morning is so biting it feels a bit like your skin is freezing and its hard to believe that what were feeling here now, which is about 10 below zero, would be considered warm when compared to what Many Americans are facing this morning. These Early Morning lows frigid, minus 17, bismarck, minus 21 in minneapolis toppling records. Minus 9 in pittsburgh. Minus 13 degrees in detroit and indianapolis, this is in fact with the wind. Many spots minus 40 it feels like out there including detroit, minneapolis and into parts of central pennsylvania. Marci and muhammad, back to you. Jim indy ki joining us. So now we know how cold these feel do we know what its doing to our bodies . Dr. Richard besser shows us how our bodies react to this air. This temperature you have to completely bundle up. You want to make a sealed envelope of air around your body to keep you warm. We took these pictures with a thermal camera. The red is heat coming off this man. You can see his face and neck are giving off heat. Whats more, look closely. You can see where the zipper of his jacket is leaking heat. If you lose too much heat theres a real danger of hypothermia. You need to wear many thin layers. Hes standingout side, he takes off his gloves and look what happens, the heat, that orange yellow, over the course of one minute disappears much thats the beginning of frostbite. His fingers losing all heat and his body is protecting itself and keeping it in the core for the essential organs. You cant have any exposed skin in this kind of weather. Baca has headed the department for 16 years. Meanwhile, an idaho man has been sentenced to prison for slapping a crying toddler during a flight. He used a racial slur and hit him under the eye. He was flying to atlanta to see his son who had been declared brain dead after an apparent overdose. Prosecutors had recommended a sixmonth sentence but the judge upped it to eight months. The Supreme Court put gay marriage on hold in utah. The decision stays in effect until an Appeals Court can take up the case. That court may decide if the states ban on samesex marriage violates gay and lesbian couples constitutional rights. More than 900 couples got married in utah during the 17 days it was legal to do so. The attendant was thrown about 30 feet, and the gas pump exploded into flames after an outofcontrol car smashed into them. Another attendant quickly grabbed a fire extinguisher and put out the flames. The gas stations owner says his worker will be okay. Well, while on the floor, the poor guy, you know, all he said was, john, the money is in my pocket. Take the money. I said, dont worry about the pocket. Very nice guy. Police say the elderly driver meant to stop but accidentally hit the accelerator instead. He incredibly was not hurt either. Another amazing video this morning. Check it out. Wild ride in a city bus as it lost control and crashed into a building. The bus punched through the idaho Power Building coming to a stop with its front end dangling above a parking garage. The driver said the brakes failed sending the bus careening over a curb and through a parking lot, but also mowed down several street signs and trees before slamming into the building. We commend him because, you know, instead of running into vehicles, parked vehicles, which could have resulted in more injuries, that he was able to kind of veer off the road and go through that parking lot. Amazingly, only one passenger was hurt. Police say the bus was only going about 20 miles an hour. The former seattle schoolteacher who slept with and married one of her students is free again this morning after a brief jail stay. Mary Kay Letourneau was released yesterday afternoon. She was arrested earlier for failing to appear for a Court Hearing in a suspended drivers license case. Letourneau spent years in prison for her relationship with a student with whom she has two children. Now to some football, and we start with the junior variety. The nfl is voicing some concern about a new show on the Esquire Network called friday night tykes. Its a documentary about the Texas Youth Football Association which involves children under 10. The shows trailer includes coaches calling on youngsters to play violently. The nfl says its troubling, but the network says it raises serious questions about parenting and safety in sports.
