Breaking news out of oakland. The chp is investigating a fatal crash that happened on highway 580 east near the grand avenue offramp. Police say that a silver volvo crashed at a high rate of speed. It crashed into a cubs area where contractors were work on rail repairs. It ended up hitting a construction truck. The driver of the volvo was killed. None of the construction workers were hurt. Police say that they believe the driver of the volvo was traveling more than 100 miles an hour at the time of the crash. The chp is also reporting a fatal crash on highway 101 in santa rosa around 1 30 this morning on southbound 101 on the hern avenue offramp. A passenger was ejected from the vehicle and the driver was unresponsive when emergency crews arrived. Investigators are still trying to determine what led up to this accident. Police have cleared the scene in San Franciscos Mission district after determining a suspicious package turned out to be a hoax device. The package was discovered around 8 00 last night at 23rd and bartlett. It appeared to be a legitimate threat because it had a timer, pipes and wires. The bomb squad was called to the scene and determined the device to be a hoax. Residents were asked to shelter in place until the issue was resolved. Police cleared the scene around 10 00 p. M. A car burglary goes hightech in south sausalito. It had devastating consequences for a northbound woman. Police say the man in this picture used some kind of Electronic Device to break into the car and steal the bicycle. During the same period last year they reported only five impacts. The theory is we arent having any more collision than we are having before, its just that the impact to the vehicles is a little more severe. The bridge captain notes that the new barriers comply with federal regulations. The old ones did. The new barriers are no wider but they are tougher on cars and tougher to repair. The district has spent 187,000 on parts and labor since january 12th. Money it plans to get back from drivers who hit these barriers. The district expects this stack of spare parts in the back to last through the year. You can say honestly looking at this that this is a better system than the old system. Its a legal system. The other ones were no longer compliant. Both the district and the california Highway Patrol cites speed as a factor.
