Jonathan, thank you. A sentence has been handed down for the Discovery Bay man who murdered a 9yearold boy during a sleep over. A Contra Costa County judge ruled 20yearold William Schultz will go to state prison instead of a Mental Health facility for the 2015 murder of jordan. Abc7 News Reporter lawyer i anthony was inside the courtroom for this emotional hearing and she joins us live from martinez. Laura . Reporter kristen, there were tears on all sides as the mother of both the victim and the defendant spoke in the courtroom as his mother described it, Billy Schultz loved his best friends family. Yet he did the unthinkable. There are no winners. There arent. Reporter its the outcome his mother had hoped for, but one that brings her and her family little satisfaction. Her sons killer, 20yearold william Billy Schultz, was found sane and will spend 30 years to life in prison. I think justice was served and i think today marks another milestone of more healing for my family. We still dont have our son, and its nothing were rejoicing over, however we do feel comfort in the sense that billy is where he belongs. Reporter schultz was 18 in april 2015 when he spent the night at their house in Discovery Bay. An avid baseball player, 9yearold jordy was stabbed five times as he slept in his bunk bed. He was the best friend of his older brother. He hurt us. There is no denying that. My family has been able to move past it. Weve been able to stay strong. Its very disappointing. Reporter schultzs attorney argued her client should be found insane and sentenced to a Mental Health facility not prison. By finding him sane, unfortunately, i think we are sending a message that this Mental Illness was not serious enough. Reporter in court for the sentencing, schultzs mother Kathryn Schultz said her son is highly remorseful and what he did to jordy and his family will haunt him for the rest of his life. In martinez, laura anthony, abc7 news. The department of Homeland Security is interviewing a Foreign National who tried to break into the cockpit of a flight from california to hawaii. The passenger on flight 31 from los angeles to honolulu took this video showing fbi acts escorting the man in handcuffs off the plane this morning. They say he was standing near the bathroom holding a laptop and when a Flight Attendant asked him to sit down, he tried to open the cockpit door. Flight attendants pushed him back using a beverage cart and he returned to his seat. Agents are now checking that plane for possible explosives. The threat of explosives hidden in laptops has led to the ban of electronics bigger than a cell phone on flights to the United States from ten airports in the middle east and africa. All passengers on that flight are safe. The bodies of a santa rosa couple missing since their plane was reported overdue on april 18 have been found. Sierra county sheriff Officials Say brenda and Mark Richards plane was found crashed in a remote area south of yuba pass in sierra county. The tail portion of the plane was found tuesday. The deceased couple, they were later found inside the cockpit buried deep in the snow. A trail of smashandgrab thieves used a hammer and a gun to rob a danville costco today. It is the second time in two weeks that this costco store has been targeted by thieves. This time two men Wearing Masks entered the store around noon. One smashed a glass case and grabbed jewelry. When a store employee tried to stop him, the second suspect fired two shots. Men then jumped into a waiting car and got away. No one was hurt. Police evacuated Bridges Academy on mclauchlin avenue at 8 30 this morning after a custodian found a back pack with a bottle inside labeled nitroglycerin. Officers called the bomb squad. Authorities havent said what was actually in the bottle. Officers are reviewing Surveillance Video to see if they can identify a suspect. Rip currents pose a special hazard for waders, swimmers and surfers. An ocean og rafer said there are rip currents. It will look safe out there. If you look out there, it looks benign. Where its benign, thats where the rip current is ripping out, its bam penning the effect of the waive coming in and it looks like the safest part and you get sucked right out. Smith says if you get caught in a rip current dont fight it. You should instead swim parallel to the shore and ride the waves back into the sand. He also recommends staying away from the water if you dont know how to swim. A 14yearold boy with ten warrants out for his arrest, 14 years old, he was taken into custody early this morning in santa rosa after leading police on a high speed chase. It started at about 2 00 a. M. And roen ert park police say the teenager was driving a stolen car and had two teenage passengers. The chase reached 100 miles an hour until the driver hit a median in santa rosa. The 14yearold behind the wheel was booked into juvenile hall. Under cover officers in Fresno County seized more than four pounds of synthetic hearn worth about 7 million on the street. Its in response to what the san ro moan valley unified School District failed to do after a student posted a short offensive video on twitter. It was a couple of kids dressed up. It was sort of a terrorist type thing. Reporter according to pierce, the young man was campaigning for student government. He was trying to gain more votes. But ironically, when a student here takes on a leadership role contract, promising to be a role model for others. He wasnt trying to hurt anyone. But this is where we need to count on our schools and our district and our teachers to kind of help our kids make those life choices. Reporter pierce says initially the school told him he could no longer be in a leadership role. Thats when his parents took legal action. The School District admitted they were forced to comply. And when students exercised those First Amendment rights, how it makes other students feel. Its a classic conflict that we deal with as a school and the School Districts. Reporter isnt this a hate message . Again, theres First Amendment rights and so if they can do whatever they want and then claim First Amendment rights, free speech, it muddies the waters a little bit. Students and administrators are holding a first of its kind event today at a san jose high school. Some 300 students from five different schools took part in the first annual latino summit at bran enhigh school. The event was the brain child of several students concerned about Graduation Rates and issues affecting latino students. Its time for us to take some basically take a stand and make some changes and help each other do great things. Theyve been working on it the last three months. At least a couple hours a week every night on thursday nights. Been really proud of them. Reporter the students attended an assembly and then break out sessions like this one, organize he recalls say the goal was to create the desire for each student to go to college. Cwa Union Workers picketed in front of this and other stores in the bay area. The workers are on a threeday strike hoping to jump start negotiations. It affects 37,000 at t workers across the country. In a statement at t says it will continue working hard to serve its customers and expects to reach an agreement with the union. Santa clara county is losing jobs according to state labor officials. The county lost 2900 jobs in april. Its the third time in four months that Santa Clara County has seen jobs go away. Bucking the trend they added 500 jobs and the san mateo region gained 10500. California is losing 16,000 jobs in april. Rents in three bay area cities are going up again. Texas Research Firm axio metrics says san jose and oakland all showed what they called positive rent growth. For San Francisco, the average rent was average rent rose 1. 5 to just over 2800.
