Police and firefighters remain on the scene of a fiery crash at a gas station in oakland. Amy hollyfield is on scene with the very latest. Amy . Kristen, they have detected a leak at the gas station. That is why they have property back their hazmat truck. That is why they are monitoring this and keeping the residents that are evacuated next door apartment complex, out of here. They do not want anyone in here yet. They want to make sure it is safe. This is all because an s. U. V. Crashed into this gas station and knocked over two pumps. That started a fire. It happened on 98th avenue and Alameda County sheriff deputy tried to pull the driver over but the driver fled, lost control, and crashed. When gas pumps were struck, the attendants were able to hit the emergency gas shut off and the fire you saw was the residual gas burning from inside the gas pump itself and then because of the vapors that come from the gas tank the holding tank, we had the vapors offgassing and they were burning. This happened next to the brookfield apartment complex. Residents were terrified weapon they looked out the window and saw the gas station was on fire. People get out of there as quickly as they could. A local Elementary School has been opened up so they can have shelter, stay warm, necessity they are physical they are allowed back home. In oakland a man is in bliss custody with residents being allowed back if their farms after a vehicle crashed into a nearby gas station sparking a near at pump. Our reporter, amy hollyfield, is near the scene. We dust got a briefing from the alameda sheriff deputy. Listen to this, the deputy who tried to pull over the driver of the s. U. V. That crashed, that deputy ended up having to save that driver, rescue him, from the burning car. The deputy thought the driver appeared drunk so he tried to pull him over on 98th in oakland. The driver took off. As he raced down 98th he lost criminal and crashed into the 24 hour gas station knocking over two pumps. That caused a fire.
