Born four months early, its hard to know what kind of health or behavioral issues this preiie could face. They are at a risk of a whole host of problems. They looked deep into the brains of premature babies to find out what differences could be seen at birth. Of particular interest, the frontal lobby. It helps them problem solve, remain attentive. It was changed and its actually the same region thats changed in children with adhd. The risk for adhd in the general population is 6 or 7 . In preemies it can be more. Using mri technology, scientists found brain regions in preemies would likely be smooth and round. If we can show it is predictive of problems, it could allow us to intervene early. Many arent diagnosed until school age. Early intervention may teach them how to maintain focus and suppress impulsive behaviors. But doing it on all infants is expensive. But researchers still believe it can save money in the long run. We can treat them early on and hopefully avoid adhd all together. This is a significant problem with significant costs. We can say these kids are at risk, intervene is prevent them from needing medication later, you can save lots and lots of money. That was Carolyn Johnson reporting. The next step is to find out how well the brain anomalies predict adhd. Until then only diagnosis through behavioral observation is still the best option.
