good friday morning thank you for joining us i'm eric thomas. and i'm katie marzullo in for kristen sze we continue breaking news from san francisco streets are closed dozens evacuated after the discovery of a possible explosive device. terry mcsweeney is live with the latest. >> reporter: about one minute ago we heard the shout of fire in the hole. then the sound of an explosion, minor explosion suggesting the bomb squad has located the device and has taken care of it in a safe manner. we don't have that confirmed. fire in the hole followed by explosion suggests they've taken care of the situation. all of this began midnight with the discovery of a suspicious device in the basement, 605 jones at geary. the building this was found in evacuated 75 people out they've again to local hotels to spend the night -- they've gone to local hotels to spend the night. no one allowed to come in this area all off-limits. take a look at pictures of the bomb squad gearing up, getting ready to go into that basement getting that suspicious device out we still don't know what it was. we are asking police what it looked like they weren't saying. the evacuation has gone smoothly, no hysteria the bomb squad out police cordoned off one block in every direction from geary and jones, at this time of the morning no big deal, because there's not a lot of traffic. as the morning goes on it could come into play and cause a major traffic jam. again, suspicious device apparently taken care of by the san francisco bomb squad. we will have more as the information comes in. we hope to have an update shortly. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. 5:03. in a few hours top political and police officials in san jose will layout a new plan for battling violent crime. there have been 33 homicides so far this year almost a third within the last few weeks. amy hollyfield is live at the scene of that latest homicide. >> reporter: an 18-year-old was shot to death here last night. no arrests have been may. you mentioned this is the 33rd whom -- homicide this is a 15 year high for the city the community is so concerned that dozens held a peace rally last night outside the church. some are concerned about the number of police officers on the streets. they are wondering if there could be more or maybe outside agencies could come into san jose and help. the pastor last night said it is also about forming relationships. >> it is more than putting police officers in schools, on street corners it is about getting us to know a stable group of officers that we have a relationship with. >> reporter: police did make an arrest yesterday in the killing at the safeway tuesday 27-year-old michael howard is accused in that stabbing death. now there's been another murder since then, the shooting here at south king road this happened around 11:00 last night, another case for police to add to their list. later this morning police plan to hold a press conference to talk about the tactics they've put in place to try and prevent violence, especially gang violence. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. 5:05. police hope surveillance video will lead them to the people who robbed a jewelry store in san low you can see four men armed wearing masks busting into the store. it happened after 11 yesterday morning. police say they got more than $200,000 worth of jewelry the store owner says it was terrifying. >> they told us to get on the ground if you move they will kill us. then they start breaking my showcase, reaching to my safe started shoving the jewelry into the bag. >> the robbery took less than two minutes no one was hurt. stash electronic gadgets warning from police after recent jump in robberies police say robberies up 24% in the past three months in the western part of the city. bart police say they've seen robberies like phones and computers some on trains and inside the stations others parking lots and bus stops near the stations some suspects have been armed. police have made some arrests but robberies continue. husband of a missing pacifica woman is now offering a reward for information that leads to his wife. he is putting up $10,000 to find his 76-year-old wife who disappeared almost a month ago. she is known to go for walks and possibly wearing yellow gardening shoes. we are following developing news in san francisco, public health authorities say five rabid bats have been found around lake merced the most recent a few days ago others in the last four months. warnings are going out to 200 nearby homeowners urgingu& them not to touch dead bats or let their heard a fire in the hole and pop. sounded like they were neutralizing the suspicious device they were just preparing to go in and deal with it. it was a dress rehearsal for what they may experience when they get into the basement of 605 jones one block from where i am now. midnight someone called in a report of a suspicious device in the basement that resembled a pipe bomb to the caller. police have come out, they've been out here for 5 1/2 hours. the bomb squad taking their time, building evacuated, 75 people out of there. trying to assess the situation at this time there is no rush to get this out. they feel they have the building evacuated, occasional person being allowed into the area for the most part people are being kept out. one of the persons who was -- lives nearby tried to get in earlier talked to us. >> i think, you know, interesting situation i would be concerned, i live two buildings down. i think it is early to decide and to know what -- [ unintelligible ] i would like to find out more details before making any judgments. >> reporter: we are now going to be getting an update if the san francisco police department. one question i asked during the portion of our interview was has it been detonated yet? the answer was no. more in a couple of minutes unless you want to keep it out here live and we can bring you this right now. >> are you live? >> reporter: yeah >> what can i tell you? >> reporter: what is the situation with the device? >> there are several pipe sections that appeared suspicious so the bomb squad did respond they determined they were not hazardous we are in the process of wrapping up the scene. the arson task force and special investigative division will be handling the follow-up. initial assessment done by the fire department haz-mat and sfpd bomb squad. >> reporter: three piece of suspicious devices? >> approximately 12 to 15 pipe sections that appeared suspicious. >> reporter: there you have it not an explosive device, 12 or 15 right here 15 devices, the scene will be cleared soon. another homicide in san jose this morning. police continue to investigate that and that's after a community peace rally and ahead of announcement by the police department about a new crackdown on violence. amy hollyfield is live in san jose. >> reporter: police are feeling stretched thin here in san jose. they are now at the scene of the city's 33rd murder of the year an 18-year-old was shot and kill last night. no arrests made -- shot and killed last night arrests have been made. what is scaring people a spike in violence some held a peace vigil last night calling for an end to the violence, eight murs in the past 11 days, six nonfatal shootings. there are concerns there aren't enough police officers to handle this state assembly member compose wrote a letter the chp asking that officers come to san jose and help patrol here. >> it is successful in other jurisdictions to assist in investigating, primarily traffic-related incidents so the police department can redeploy those resources to criminal investigations. >> reporter: police did make a big arrest this week, 27-year-old michael howard is in custody accused of killing someone at safeway tuesday, stabbing them to death. after they made that arrest they go the call they had another murder this one here at king road it happened last night. a very busy police department. later this morning, the police chief and the mayor plan to hold a press conference to talk about new tactics they are trying put answer to the violence, especially focusing on gang violence. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. hayward police are expected to release details later this morning of a fatal shooting that happened inside a jewelry store police were there last night after they got a 911 call before 4:00 in the afternoon that someone inside the store on west tennison road was behaving strangely the caller didn't say a word officers found a 53-year-old hispanic male in the store, shot he died at the scene. police did not say much, including whether it looked as though someone had broken in or there was a struggle. this morning, in vacaville, crews on the scene of a 50 acre brushfire to make sure there aren't flare-ups. sky 7 hd was over the scene last night firefighters were able to get it 100% contained by 11 p.m.. the flames and smoke could be seen from i-80. no homes were threatened. investigators are still trying to determine what sparked the fire. cycling champ lance armstrong is giving up the fight against doping charges in turn the anti-doping agency says it will strip him of his seven tour de france titles and ban him from cycling forever. armstrong maintains he's innocent of using performance-enhancing drugs but says he's tired of the allegations and enough is enough. he calls the investigation an unconstitutional witch-hunt. the usada says his decision is an admission of guilt and banning him from cycling even though he retired last year. in june officials claimed they had new evidence proving armstrong used performance enhancers but did not give details. cycling experts say the evidence against armstrong appears solid. >> it appears to me like an it was an unfair process that came after him, at the same time, i think is an acknowledgement on his part, not spoken, that he is cornered that the charges are largely act it is. -- accurate. armstrong says he norwegian man convicted in a shooting spree that left 77 dead will serve only 21 years for the crime, max. a judge declared anders breivik sane and handed down an immediate sentence under norwegian law he will be held behind bars for a minimum of 10 years, norway has no death sentence. he went on a murder spree in july of 2011 at a summer camp. he says he did it as part of a political protest.
