We see our neighbors. We arec neighbors helping neighbors, one citizen at a time. Today is sf homeless project day. More than 70 media organizations including abc 7 are working together to focus on this crucial issue. And were sharing stories about the problem and some possible solutions. We begin with abc 7 News Reporter Amy Hollyfield and the effort to keep the streets clean at homeless encampments. It is not moving day. Just cleaning day. At this homeless encampment at the mission and the cleaningq services are provided by the city of San Francisco. We want to make sure that if it is human waste or needles or rotting food or soiled clothing or bedding that we get that up and off the street, it is a Health Hazard if that happens. The City Employees are on the hot spot crew and they haul awa] garbage from where the homeless are living and steam clean the  sidewalk. A dark spot indicates urine and they steam clean it back to the original color. If we leave it like that, it sticks. From time to time, we come and clean it up. They are responding to a problem that seems to be getting worse. This map shows you where complaints about human waste came from in 2011. There were 5444. In 2015, that nearly doubled, to 10151 calls. Our crews have seen rodents running out of tents and suitcases. The homeless we talked dont mind the crews but are surprised how serious they are about it. How often do they do it . Every day. At 5 00 or 6 00 in the morning, they dont clean neighborhoods that much. Reporter the city estimates that the cleaning Service Costs the taxpayers around 4. 7 million a year. And i know it is costing the city a lot of money but it is for fellow human beings. Reporter city workers cant imagine whatu it would be like out here if they didnt do the cleanups. Estimating they haul away 12. 5 tons of garbage from homeless encampments every week. ni abc 7 news. And to get a better understanding of how things have take a look at this graph. San francisco is second to new york in terms of homelessness. There is 795 icyple per 100,000 residents here who are homeless. New york has 887 followed by seattle with 487 with 384 in of the people on the st of San Francisco come from the city. According to the citys homeless survey, 71 were actually living in San Francisco when they lost their homes. San francisco continues to be one of the most expensive places to live in the country. According to real estate site zillow, part of the problem is that San Francisco has failed to build enough housing to meet the current demand, sending home prices and rents up. There is no easy answer, unfortunately. One thing you can consider is zoning laws, making it easier to actually build in a city that is highly zoned or highly regulated and San Francisco is certainly one of those cities. Renters outnumber homeowners in San Francisco. According to zillow, the average representer in San Francisco spends 41 of their income on an apartment. Andcn lives paycheck to payche and saves nothing for money emergency. And the numbers dont bode well for the growing number of the homeless population. You could take a look, the number of street homeless has been about the same in the last few years. However, the number of total homeless has actually gone up to about 6500. Thank you, kristen.
