Abc 7 News Reporter janet oh, is on the scene. We have news on a boy who fell from a skylight while trying to get his basketball off the roof. You can see the wooden board covering the light. The 9yearolds mother is now talking to abc 7 news about her sons condition and what hes now wishing for. Reporter the boys name is William Wells. He fell several feet fractured his spine and suffered a head injury. He is doing much better than yesterday. Hes talking. His mother described him as a good little soldier. 9yearold William Wells condition is improving. Hes asking to go home. My sons in there. I wish he wouldnt be there. I wish i could be going through the pain hes going through. Reporter yesterday he and a few friends were playing when the ball went on the roof. According to School District officials, the boy the found their way through the locked garden fence removed a ladder from the shed and climbed onto the schools roof. Apparently the boys got up on the roof and they walked around, and there was a domed skylight that they were i dont know what they were doing on it, but the boy who was injured fell through. Reporter one of the boys stayed with william while the other went to get his mom. She quickly drove to the school too afraid to tell his mom what had happened william walked to his moms car. She then took him to a local hospital. But after finding out what happened doctors there made arrangements to transfer him to Children Hospitals oakland. Seven fractures on the spine, a fracture on his head. Reporter doctors also discover add benign cyst on his brain. School Officials Say they will go over their security measures to see how they can avoid this in the future what can we do to make our schools more safe. It was a weekend. Things are locked up. So just looking at all that all over again. Reporter now most cysts are benign. Doctors will likely drain this one, but they will certainly folk on his injuries first. They are describing his condition as stable. Abc 7 news. Today a trail is closed after a rock slide killed a woman saturday and it could remain closed indefinitely. Nancy blum was walking near arch rock when the cliff studly gave way. They fell about 60 feet. Blum was killed. The other person was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries. The park Service Posted signs last week warning about a ferbure that appeared on ar shall rock and asked visitors to stay away. In San Francisco, a vehicle hit a building and caused a gas leak. It happened between 41st and 42nd avenues. The building was briefly evacuated with, and repairs were made to the gas leak. The cause of the crash is under investigation. Some 200 protesters rallied outside the miss District Police station to mark the one Year Anniversary of the shooting of a man. It was shut down from 7 00 to noon. It was a peaceful protest. Nieto was shot and killed by officers. Officers say nieto pointed a weapon at him. Thinking it was a real gun they fired back. It turned out to be a taser. The officers were cleared of any wrongdoing. And the most recent Police Shooting will be the subject of a town hall meeting. This comes on the same day in which arguments were heard. Reporter well, that town hall meeting starts at 6 00 tonight. The most recent officerinvolved 14509ing happened a couple blocks from here on vanness and pine. There seems to be a spate of shootings involving people with mental challenges, and of course that is a concern for San Francisco police and other Police Departments around the country. And the most recent one today at this u. S. Supreme court another case, way back when, was heard for the first time. On tuesday night, 24 year old alice brown was shot and killed after she fled from Police Driving erratically, crashing into several cars. The officers said they feared for their safety and for others at vanness and pine. They thought the taser this man was holding was a gun. Both were said to have been dealing with mental issues. In 2008, 56 year old theresa shin was shot and wounded when police say she threatened them with a knife. She sued the officers and the city for failing to consider her mental condition before the nearfatal confrontation. The case went through the lower courts and today to the u. S. Supreme court where justices heard oral arguments. Her attorney argued that the americans with disabilities act gives exceptions to people with mental illnesses. There was no direct threat. If they had followed their training they would not have opened the door and created this confrontation. Reporter in recent years many Police Departments have intensified their crisis intervention Training Like this one recently held by the san mateo sheriffs department. We teach them how to if they have time deescalate the situation, we teach them how to talk how to listen, how to problemsolve to a certain extent. Reporter at sfpd 250 officers have already gone through crisis intervention courses which also specifically deal with the mentally ill. But bottom line if theres an immediate threat to the public his cops have to stop it. Certainly if a person is out by themselves but if theyre a significant danger to others, you have to protect the defenseless or the people that were here to protect. Reporter in burriss case the city counters that shin produced a direct threat and they were justified in using force. It is dry right now, but it was a much different story in the bay area this morning. Abc 7 news was in San Francisco, this was before 10 00. Reporter and youve never been paid that money at all . Not at all. Reporter so the former coworkers have gone public. Efforts to get their money have frustrated them. They just tell me tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow never comes. Reporter they are the owners and general manager. Kumar has been in the Restaurant Business for nearly a decade. He admits hes had former employees file wage complaints. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Have done it in the past yeah. Reporter but at this new restaurant, they say shes only owed 1 hundred dollars. A deadly accident at a construction site in north carolina. Three workers were killed and one seriously injured when a scaffolding collapsed in downtown raleigh. The incident was described in graphic detail in an article in the november 24 issue of Rolling Stone. A woman identified as jackie remembers every moment of agony during which she says seven men took turns raping her. Other news organizations quickly found discrepancies in the article. The magazine would later apologize and launch an internal investigation. Charlottesville police says that jackie declined to talk to them after the article was published. The 17 year old boy behind the wheel of this car found himself in a lot of danger after he lost control of a car and ended up teetering on top of a bridge guardrail. This happened over the weekend. In an oil spill the state has a coordinated response and resources. But this january incident was not petroleum based. Theres no funding mechanism to help local nonprofits rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife. This center alone has spent more than 150,000. It was a very expensive operation, plus, just paying for the food and medical equipment for all those animals is very taxing. Reporter now state senator mark leno is coauthoring a bill that would authorize state money to be paid back by the spills perpetrator, if and when theyre caught. And the responsible party will have to not only reimburse the nonprofit organizations upwards of 300,000 of expenses. Theyll have to pay a fine. And they will also have to pay for any additional Environmental Mitigation that may be necessary. Want to show you exactly where this happened. The gravel truck was parked on shell avenue in martinez helping pour a new sidewalk when it flipped right on top of a car in a driveway with a woman inside. Our reporter joins us now with a very strange and tragic story. Reporter yeah, larry, neighbors say that the driver of the truck told the woman to move her car out of the driveway, but she didnt have a chance. Now witnesses tell us they heard a loud crash. They tried to rescue the victim out of the car, but she had died upon impact. Cal osha and Martinez Police are investigating the case. Can you see the gravel truck still at the scene. Lets show you a better clear angle. It shows the car resting in the driveway when the back end of the truck came crashing down. All of the gravel spilled out. It was working for a city project to improve the sidewalk along shell avenue. The accident happened around 1 00 this afternoon. They are speaking with the driver of the truck to figure out what exactly happened. Neighbors say this was supposed to be a safety project to prevent accidents in the area and protect the dozens of High School Kids who walk along this road. Theyre supposed to know what theyre doing. Theyre contractors. My own feeling, i think they should have closed the road off. Theres too many cars here. If you see how many kids have if to go on this road and drive up and down and walk up and down this hill every day from the high school then youd understand why theyre doing it. Reporter shell avenue and pine street will be closed off for several hours tonight as this investigation continues. Now we did learn the victim is a 32yearold hairdresser.
