Ama hundreds of people have been forced from their homes by a wildfire in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Abc7 News Reporter katie is live with the latest. Reporter the latest information we have from cal fire is that 1,000 acres have burned and this fire is just 5 percent contained. It is hard to make out with camera, but we can see bright orange flames burning in the hills. You may be able to make out an orange glow above them in the smoke plume. This erupted after 3 00 this afternoon. We know at least one struck tire has burned. Sky 7 captured this video. Early reports is the fire started in a house, but it is too soon to know the exact cause of the fire. Flames continue to threaten homes, but cal fire is not saying how many homes. Cal fire is trying to slow this down. It was moving at such a fast rate. A lot of equipment, crews north of redding to san luis San Luis Obispo trying to stop the fire. There are crews from San Jose Fire Department and a spokesperson is describing for us what exactly the firefighters are up against. The vegetation is live and susceptible to fastmoving fire expeks plows shiv fire. As it started moving throughout the canyon it moved very fast and up the steep terrain and rough terrain. Reporter we saw the smoke swirling into a column like a tornado. And then we watched as the flames were dying down and then flaring back up. At times the firefighters we were standing with estimated the flames reached at least 100 feet high. No injuries to homeowners or firefighters reported at this time. Another small wildfire popped up in the Santa Cruz Mountains burning two to three acres near scotts valley. Firefighters are arriving and not sure if any homes are threatened at this point. Of course, the weather conditions are a key factor, and lets see what it is like on the fire lines. Here is meteorologist sandhya patel. Sandhya . Sandhya dan, right now it is still warm there. 76 degrees near the fire line. It is dry and 17 relative humidity. Although it has been coming up slowly, you will notice it is not that humid out there. 17 is pretty dry conditions. The winds are calm and thats the way they will remain. Generally speaking light to less than 10 miles an hour over the next 24 hours. From the east bay hillses camera some of the smoke from the fire and obviously here showing up on the sunset. The hues were contributed by the smoke. Live doppler 7 is showing you the fog, but it is still well off the coastline even though we had a record setting day today. Katie . Reporter Santa Cruz County deputies are patrolling the evacuation area trying to prevent looting. Meanwhile, folks who stayed in their homes are watching the glow on the mountain and hoping the winds dont shift and blow the flames in their direction. Santa cruz county Sheriff Deputies warned people on this road. It feels like the wind has shifted and that is what would make me nervous. Thats what the sheriff said is it shifted. It is starting to come. Reporter mailboxes are tagged and evacuation warnings handed out. She saw the fire about 3 30. There was a huge Mushroom Cloud that was pretty daunting and then watched it get bigger and bigger and bigger. Reporter she is waiting to evacuate as are her neighbors, but they are ready to flee at short notice. Clothes, jewelry, passports, documents. Reporter cal fire says some 300 people have been asked to evacuate in the Santa Cruz Mountains. We recommend they leave their homes. We set up an evacuation site for folks to go. We were told that it is blowing toward the ocean and it could sweep up here we are really just waiting. Reporter now i have three Red Cross Evacuation Centers to tell you about. The one mentioned in so cal high school, but there is the jew yish Community Center and the Presbyterian Church on dewitt avenue.
