Katie the fire started across the street. It is a known spot for the homeless and theiren comp meant their encampment is where the fire started. The flames went from one of the empty lots to the other in a matter of seconds. The smoke was so thick residents did their best to get away from it. We have to keep going back. You. It was pretty bad. The fire was started behind these trees along east capitol expressway. The witnesses say from there the fire just took off. Thats when we seen the trees on fire. And then we walked a little more and we jumped to the palm trees and they incinerated fast. They were so dry. And then from there it just you could see how far it spread out. The firefighters say the wind was challenging with gusts up to 30 Miles Per Hour. And it kept changing direction. We could fight a fire in the same direction and knock it out, it is good. It made it tough. Firefighters used east capitol expressway as a staging area. The grassfire didnt spread throughout their home. They were worried about flying embers. I have seen a lot of ashes fly. It is worrisome. And with summer almost here, the worrying wont be going away anytime soon. With this being another drought year firefighters are prepared for a busy fire season. They have either been cutoff and parishioners think the statue might have been forcefully pulled off and then stolen. In downtown oakland we are getting word that police have arrested more protesters in the second straight night of demonstrations. They have defined a new crackdown on nighttime street protests requiring the protesters to stay on the sidewalks. No word at this time on the number of people arrested. Police arrested five people and cited nearly 50 in last nights protest. More than 100 demonstrators marched peacefully until they were blocked by a row of police officers. The mayor has no right to keep them off the streets. I actually think anden curling the people of oakland to come every night. We should have rolling protests to show her that we are not going to tolerate this kind of behavior. She has been in office five months. Tonight abc7 News Eye Team reporter dan noyes goes undercover into one of the citys most notorious bicycle chop shops to find out why. You are watching a crime in progress. A bike thief casing a bike. He cuts the lock and then takes off. I kept checking and eke whiching. It was gone. I probably had 2500 into that bike. His bike is one of the thousands stolen every year in San Francisco. Roger dawson has a good idea where they go. It was here. This was the scene of the crime. He was in his car when a thief stole a bike next to him. And he put the cut lock and his wire cutters and the helmet in one hand and road away. They happened all over the city. He is the citys top cop in bike thefts. They just top back up. People from all over the city come to the chop shops and they exchange stolen bikes for drugs or money or money to buy drugs. We wanted to find out what happens inside the chop shops. It was under highway 101. In broad daylight there was a constant stream of people coming and going with bikes hidden under tarps and dozens of bikes. Eight to 10 bikes were stolen. We watched as people took bikes apart and mixed the pieces to build new bikes, painting them so they cant be easily identified by the owners. Serial numbers are scratched off. There is a different wheel set on there now. They also attract other types of crime. We watched as people fumbled with piles of cell phones and bought and sold drugs. Doing them right out in the open. We wanted to know how easy it was to get a bike from one of these camps. We took our hidden cameras there. The eye team went looking for a deal. Within minutes we get an offer. We take it for a spin and the guy tries to close the deal we pay and walk away with a bike worth about 500. It took five minutes. The bike was likely stolen. We tried to track down the owner, but like many stolen bikes this one was not reported to police. The estimates 4. 5 million of bikes are stolen each year. They posted a list of some of the most notorious bike thieves on the park station website. Among them a man who runs one of the most popular chop shops. We saw people shop his curbside store and paying cash for parts. He has been arrested for a number of things including possession of stolen property, burglary Domestic Violence assault. The list goes on and on. Police arrested him again last month. Charging him with possession of stolen goods and conspiracy to commit a crime. He agreed to speak with us inside the county jail and admitted running a chop shop. We are homeless and trying to make it on the streets. He tells us he turns 15 bikes a day and will sell a 200 wheel for 40. He knows most of the bikes he buys and sells are stolen. They will come and arrest me. He offers some advice to anyone who has had their bike stolen. I will get it back next time. Thats little comfort for eric stall. It is a huge problem. His bike still hasnt turned up and probably wont. I suspect my bike was taken apart quickly. If it was at this chop shop, it wasnt there longer. We called police to tell them what we found and the city put up a fence and cleared the chop shop. It didnt go far though. It just moved across the street. Dan noyes, abc7 news.
