This is from 30 minutes ago, this is the Moment Police began using smoke bombs and teargas to disperse the protesters. At least twice we did watch demonstrators throw those canisters back at the Police Officers. Abc 7 News Reporter on the ground for us tonight in berkeley with a look at some of the damage that was done. This demonstration started going sideways when the large group made its way to Berkeley Police headquarters, and officers tried to keep them clear of the building. One officer was injured by an object tossed from the crowd, and some tried to keep it nonviolent. No violence one group made their way to a nearby trader joes, and then protesters hit a radio shack. That window started breaking and these two windows broke. It was like he was going to light the store on fire. A guy with a crowbar comes in and stars to steal stuff. One looter, as they rushed him out the backdoor, another looter attacked with a skateboard. I dont know why they have white people coming in and shoving black people, you should not be in this protest if you have white skin. Outside, neighbors help to sweep up the scattered glass. Im cleaning here. Reporter as the night unravelled, some demonstrators tried to stop the looting and vandalism. You shouldnt be taking things from the stores. After a few hours, one small Group Finally made its way back to the campus, and thats when the police made several arrests. I am being told by Berkeley Police that the arrests are continuing. We are live over at that trader joes where there was a lot of that vandalism going on, and the crews are trying to board up a lot of the windows that were busted out. Also in the process of a lot of these demonstrations, there was a group that also tried to make their way out to the freeway, to i80. Smaller crowds, though, at this hour than we saw earlier in the night. Downtown and North Berkeley transportation was shut down but are not now. Phrr arrested a dozen protesters in San Francisco. They shut down traffic at Market Street near the b. A. R. T. Station for about an hour. Officers took in and took several into custody. We are asking for police to be accountable. We give them power and need to be held accountable for that power. Our goal is to see that we all have to unite to oppose racist police brutality, because anybody can be a victim. Last night in oakland, protests turned violent. They arrested at least five people, but not before several shots were damaged. Today you can see the damage left behind. A bank and a footlocker and shoe repair shop were among the vandalized businesses. The owner of a wine shop was beaten when he tried to prevent protesters from turning in shop protesters. Wednesday and thursday, demonstrations remained peaceful. Oakland police say a suicidal man did not die from being tasered by Police Officers today, that he died from self inflicted wounds. Police were called to congress to find a man with a knife, and they say he had several self inflicted stab wounds and cuts to his wrist. Police say he became arrested and tased him and disarmed him, and a medical crew treated him and he died a short time later. An autopsy will confirm the cause of death. In richmond tonight, a suspected robber was shot. It happened just before 6 30. Police say the suspect allegedly stole something from the homes yard and the resident opened fire. In tonights headlines, right now police and protesters are in a standoff in berkeley at telegraph avenue and channing way. Theres a few hundred people still in the streets. You can see them splintered off in different groups. Police are standing in a line and keeping them from get into different areas within berkeley. A couple hundred people now, and that is down from more than 1,000 tonight. Several people have been arrested already, and officers used smoke bombs and teargas to break up the clouds earlier. And fights broke out between looters and other protesters trying to top that. One officer was injured by something thrown by a protesters. In San Francisco this afternoon, about a dozen protesters were arrested and they shut down traffic on Market Street for about an hour. Protests taking place across the nation. Its the ninth night of demonstrations over the decision not to indict the white Police Officer whose choke hold killed an unarmed black man. Reporter a socalled diein in new york city grand terminal. Dont shoot in a rally, garners mother said she is comforted by the outpouring. She is so awesome to see how crowds are out there. Garners family says they intend to file a civil lawsuit.
