The anger in the streets stems from a white new York City Police officer not being indicted for the uh pearnt chokehold death of a black suspect. Sky 7hd shows us a live look at protesters moving through the streets. Right now they are at telegraph and 27th. Abc news allan wong joins us. A small band of demonstrators broke through some windows. Police have been chasing them in the pouring rain through downtown oakland. The police have been trying to say one step ahead of the demonstration, but it hasnt been easy. The protesters flanked the police lines before 9 00 and climbed on to interstate 880. Some of the first protesters almost got struck by on coming cars. They closed both north and southbound lanes for about 20 minutes. From there it was on to the west oakland bart station. The police dropped the gates and partially shut it down, but several protesters got under the gate before police managed to chase them back out. During the march a couple of windows were smashed out at the clorox building at broadway and 12th. Two groups started this out at 7 00. One gathered at the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at jack done done square and marched up the broadway and the other mashed down and they shutdown telegraph and west grand. At that point they were 500 strong with the intention of causing havoc. And it looks like thats what they have done. Abc7 news. Allen, thanks very much. The police have been trying to stay one step ahead of the demonstration, but they have not been easy. The protesters out flank the police lines before 9 00 and they climbed on to interstate 80. Some of the first protesters who caused problems were quickly removed from the highway. Now, the vandals broke more windows a short time ago. They targeted the downtown wine merchants at broadway and 14th street. Thats near city hall. The owners hand was cut trying to protect his store. The protest began earlier this week after a grand jury in new york decided not to charge a what Police Officer in the chokehold death of an unarmed black man. California police are not allowed actually to use chokeholds, but certain departments including San Francisco and oaknd la do allow officers to subdue a suspect by a carotid restraint as it is called which is unlike a chokehold that cuts off the windpipe. It squeezes the arteries on the side of the neck to restrict blood supply to the brain. It is viewed as lethal force. It is one of the highest levels of force in the department. Police officers say applying the caw carotid restraint is difficult and so some departments dont allow the use of either. A 3. 9 quake rattled the south bay. It struck after 6 00 and was centered near hollister. No reports of injuries or damage, but it was widely felt. Police are investigating this incident as an occupational accident. San franciscos police chief says two officers convicted on multiple charges by a federal grand jury should be fired. They were convicted today of stealing money, drugs and other items from the suspects in the criminal cases. Both men face up to 20 years in federal prison. One officers uh Attorney Says the Clients Service to the city should be considered at his sentencing. He has been shot at and people try to run him over. He has been stabbed and he has been a her low wick combatant to the citizens of San Francisco and i am sorry it has come to this. The police chief says the crimes hot weigh the service. And for marking executive sharon wong, a trip back home to her native canada was the inspiration behind it all. I saw what a big impact a simple project like this had. Wong is behind the shoe box project and it started in canada in 2011, but it launched in the bay area last month they are asking for small gifts, everything from new scarfs to socks and perfume and shampoo all packed in a shoe box. What has been so rewarding is seeing how generous people are. They have taken the time out to make one shoe box or three. Donations are then given to the survivors living in nearby shelters. The shelter in Santa Clara County is one of them. We spoke to a legal advocate and a Domestic Violence survivor herself. She said the shoe boxes can brighten someones day. We feel more confident being stronger and being more independent and we can make it. Local businesses are also getting into the spirit of the season. Keen garage in palo alto is somewhere they can go to drop off the box. And a small thing for us is a huge thing for them. It was a no brainer for us to get involved. It is all about perspective. A lot of these women and they dont have time to pack anything they own. It is the clothes on their back. A gift that will leave a lasting impression.
