Diane, that big picture is a wickedly cold one. Even here in new york city, where we started the morning in the 50s, were going to drop to the Single Digits by tomorrow morning. And look at that. The width of this cold. All the way through the northern rockies, to iowa, through the gulf coast. And even miami will get cold tonight. Lifethreatening, school closing, recordbreaking cold. Thats incredibly cold air in western iowa. Weve got brutal cold everywhere you go. Its still going to feel like 20, 25 degrees below zero. Reporter the scenes from our sub zero nation are stunning tonight. From zero visibility in michigan to the tundra once called ohio. It was a dont go outside day in kansas city. Chicagoans renaming their land chiberia. Lake michigans steaming as temps bottomed out at a recordbreaking 16 below zero. The governor of illinois declaring a state of emergency. And in indiana, one day after a major snow, a state of disaster and a severe warning from the governor. If you can stay in today, stay in all day today. Reporter records broken as far as south as texas. And look at these frozen spectacles in georgia. Atlanta today, colder than anchorage, alaska. And its brought to you by a pool of cold air sometimes referred to as the polar vortex. Its an upperlevel low pressure system that circulates around the north pole. Many times it reaches central canada. And in this case, the jet stream bending just far south enough to allow that counterclockwise spinning low to dig lifethreatening cold into the lower 48. Even shipping is affected. This coast guard ice breaker working around the clock to keep the shipping lanes open. The ice here hasnt frozen this early since the 1930s. This is the kind of stuff were breaking through right now. That ice is a foot thick. Reporter so, the next natural question, how long will it last . Lets answer how cold it will be tomorrow morning first. Look at the map. You have the bitter cold settling in. Freeze warnings all the way south to the gulf coast. The windchills as low as 65 below even in parts of tennessee. Nashville tomorrow morning wakes up at 7 below. Pittsburgh, 30 below will be the feelslike. And here is how long it stays. Reporter in Emergency Rooms across the midwest tonight, frostbite, the top concern. With these temperatures, it can set in just five minutes. Not safe for anyone to be outside for any period of time. Reporter doctors say many frostbite victims, like this man in chicago, wait too long to get help. It wasnt only his feet that were the problem. He ends up having a pneumonia, as well. In this temperature, you have to complete bundle up. You have to make a seal of air around your body to keep you warm. We took a pictures with a thermal camera. I want you to take a look at this. The red, the heat coming off this man. You see his face and neck are giving off heat. Look closely. You can see where the zipper of his jacket is losing heat. You can see where the stitching the letting heat out. If you lose too much heat and theres a real danger of hypothermia. You need to wear many thin layers. Each one is another heat envelope. And wear a scarf under that zipper and wool or synthetic fibers. So, seal off the middle part of your body. And you have images showing how frostbite begins. Yeah. Take a look at this man. Hes standing outside. He takes off his gloves. Look what happens. The heat, that orange yellow, over the course of just one minute, it disappears. Thats the beginning of frostbite. His fingers losing all heat. His body is protecting himself and keeping the heat in his core for his essential organs. Again, you cant have any exposed skin in this weather. A great warning tonight. One of them iraq, where so many brave american troops fought to create a future. Heres abcs chief Foreign Correspondent terry moran on the extremists rising. Led war to plant democracy in iraq, much of fallujah has now fallen to al qaeda. The terror groups infamous black flag flies openly there now. And its masked soldiers are everywhere, rpg launchers in hand. Al qaedas takeover of fallujah brings back bitter memories for americans. It was here in 2004 that u. S. Marines fought a ferocious, housetohouse battle against iraqi insurgents. More than 100 marines gave their lives to pacify the city and hundreds more were injured. And the civil war in next door syria, where al qaeda fighters are growing in strength and taking the lead among rebel forces, is now spilling over freely into iraq.
