And good evening. Im rebecca jarvis. In for david muir tonight. And we begin with one of the worlds most high profile terror suspects accused of directing the attackers in benghazi the night the u. S. Ambassador and three other people were killed. Ahmed abu khattala, grabbed by u. S. Special forces in libya earlier this month, and today, delivers to the u. S. Federal court in washington. The tightest security on hand, armed guards standing watch outside. Abcs senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny leads us off tonight, reporting from outside the courthouse. Reporter Ahmed Abu Khattala stood before an american judge for the first time this afternoon. He raised his right happened, speaking softly with the help of an interpreter, as his public defender entered a plea of not guilty. He was fingerprinted and photographed like any other suspect. But the tight security and rare weekend appearance at federal court highlighted the importance of the case. Before dawn, abu khattala was flown to washington by helicopter after being held on a navy warship after his capture in libya nearly two weeks ago. Inside the courtroom, he stood tall with a bushy gray beard. His eyes closely watching the judge and nearly a dozen government prosecutors. Fbi agents had been interrogating him aboard the uss new york, as the ship made its way from the Mediterranean Sea to the atlantic coast. The charges he faces carry the death penalty. U. S. Officials hope he can provide key details on other suspected to be involved in the attack. He is really the goto guy when it comes to intelligence about the other conspirators. Reporter the benghazi attacks on september 12th, 2012, killed four americans, including the u. S. Ambassador to libya. The night of deadly violence sparked a bitter partisan feud, largely focusing on the role of former secretary of state hillary clinton. What difference at this point does it make . Reporter republicans have pushed for a special congressional committee, which is likely to subpoena clinton this fall when its hearings begin. But republicans have also been critical of the obama administrations decision to charge abu khattala in the American Court system, rather than a military tribunal. Inside the courtroom today, it became clear the legal questions could be just as complicated as the political ones. Prosecutors must now build a case that can hold up in federal court. Officials tell abc news hes not admitted to anything yet but has provided useful information. Rebecca . Jeff zeleny, thank you. And we turn next to the severe weather. Over 20 million americans in the threat zone this weekend. Meanwhile, in the west, the fire and smoke from arizona, where mandatory evacuations are still in effect tonight. The forecast in just a moment, but first, abcs linzie janis with a look at the wreckage. Theres a tornado reporter tonight, residents in kolfax, wisconsin, bracing for fresh storms after this tornado tore through the town friday, ripping off roofs, downing trees and scattering debris. In minnesota, its water, not wind, thats the enemy. As reporter Josh Rosenthal from our minneapolis st. Paul station kstp shows us. Residents along the Minnesota River valley are banding together. Here in prior lake, wheelbarrows arent going to cut it. Theyre using duck boats like this to transport sandbags, hoping to save each others homes from floodwaters that may continue to rise. Reporter across the midwest, Rivers Running high. Water from the Des Moines River rushing through these now open flood gates. In colorado, firefighters trying to contain a wildfire thats raged through 500 acres of rugged terrain. Further west, another fire in arizona. This one, ten times larger and threatening 90 structures. Linzie janis, abc news, new york. Our thanks to linzie janis for that report. And joining us now is meteorologist bill kelly from our columbus affiliate, wsyx. And bill, you were just saying, the weather only gets more extreme from here. It does. A moderate risk out for parts tomorrow. But let me show you where it is tonight we are watching the threat. From texas all the way up until northern minnesota, from amarillo, say to minneapolis. We really need to be watching that. Were also talking about that risk tomorrow, which includes very large hail. Moderate risk in central iowa. Brief tornado. And some very strong winds. But the rain, definitely something that bears watching. Were talking about rain measured in inches in spots. Two to three inches of rain on an already saturated ground throughout much of this region. So, that, too, could be a problem in addition to the severe weather. Keeping them in our thoughts. Meanwhile, out west, a very different situation. Yeah, its night and day. Were talking about some places that have exceptional drought conditions. Thats the worst of the drought conditions. In california, about a third of the state is under that. And there are some fires that were watching and it is going to be dry for at least another week. Not a good situation. Meteorologist bill kelly, thank you. And we turn now to the funeral for the little boy who died in the back seat of a hot suv in georgia. And in Washington State tonight, a very strange breakin at the governors office, caught on multiple surveillance cameras. Two young women are seen climbing on the outside of the capitol building. Since being elected last year, pope francis has become known for his relentless pace, most recently on display during a visit to the holy land. Advisers are encouraging him to slow down. Maybe theres some wisdom in that. But this doesnt seem to be a pope who is on the verge of stopping. And all eyes will be on the pope tomorrow as he celebrates a special mass right here in st. Peters basilica. Rebecca . Alex marquardt, thank you.
