Good evening on this saturday night and we begin with that drone strike on terror targets in yemen. Of course the country believed to be home to al qaedas most dangerous wing. Tonight an official there confirming the drone striking a vehicle carrying suspected militants, the attack coming days after this video right here surfaced showing a massive al qaeda meeting. Its leaders openly threatening the united states. The question now, was this americas response to that video. Abcs chief Global Affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz reporting in on what we know so far. Reporter the hellfire missile from the u. S. Drone was launched from above yemens southern desert at a moving target. A pickup truck said to be carrying al qaeda militants who had been under surveillance for some time. The militants say officials had been training at a remote camp nearby and the Drone Operators were watching as the pickup pulled away. A yemeni official says the intelligence on the militants and the truck was very, very pinpoint, with high confidence in the target. In an instant, the missile struck the truck, killing at least ten militants, says the official. The strike follows the release of a tape from yemen showing a large gathering of al qaeda, the largest of its kind in years with the top al qaeda leader on the peninsula, vowing on the tape to strike america. I think that you grab a win when you can grab a win. This was a high profile win for the counterterrorism side. Reporter while the yemeni officials said the strike was pinpoint, they also acknowledged that in what they called a terrible case of bad luck a vehicle with construction workers ended up being at the same spot. Three were killed. Many yemeni civilians i have talked to on trips to yemen say they oppose drone strikes. Once americans come, al qaeda will have support of people who are not support of al qaeda. So drone strikes make people support al qaeda . Yes, make people support al qaeda, yes. Reporter the drone strikes have not been occurring nearly as often as in the past, and david, we dont know if it had anything to do with that tape that was rpd. In the meantime, martha, what are your sources telling you about the people inside that vehicle . Do we know anything . There was said to be a radical preacher and some al qaeda recruiters according to a yemen i official and probably some regular al qaeda foot soldiers but not that top leader we saw in the video tape. Martha raddatz tonight, martha will be hosting this week with much more on this first thing in the morning. Thanks. We turn next to the desperate search for hundreds of people still missing after that ferry disaster off south korea. The somber images of bodies being pulled from the water. Divers now risking their own lives, struggling against treacherous conditions, current so strong they are ripping the masks from their faces. New underwater video as the divers attach ropes to guide them deeper down. They are still trying to get to that cafeteria where they believe so many were trapped. Abcs Gloria Riviera is right there again tonight. Reporter strong currents and heavy rains, making it difficult to search for the over 300 still unaccounted for. Today the disgraced captain of the south korean ferry, along with two crew members, facing criminal charges of negligence and violation of maritime law. The third mate, 25 years old, without a lot of experience was steering the ship when the accident happened. According to charges by the prosecutor, she ordered a turn so sharp that it caused the vessel to list. Abc news has learned that safety officials, in touch with the ship at the first signs of trouble, urged evacuation right away. But, disgraced captain lee joon seuk, seen here in custody, waited some 30 minutes after making the distress call. The current was very strong, he said. I was afraid they would drift away. Video tonight, showing a diver in murky water, using a rope to enter the ferry which sank off the south korean coast three days ago. Saturdays search effort has 579 divers, 192 boats and 30 aircraft. Divers trying to reach the cafeteria, where many of the teenage passengers are believed to have been trapped. Their grieving families, generations keeping vigil. The students on board were 16 and 17 years old. They had grandparents, siblings, and of course, mothers and fathers, all now living a nightmare. David, theres a lot of discussion over whether families would give the full goahead to start using those massive cranes weve seen to start raising the ship, making it easier to recover bodies. But it could take months, and many parents have said theyre not ready to concede that all hope is lost. David . Gloria, thank you. Now to the other major search playing out this evening, this one at the top of the world after that avalanche on mt. Everest, the deadliest catastrophe that mountain has ever seen. This image of rescue teams climbing everest again, making their way up to where it took place, not far from base camp, 19,000 feet looking to retrieve the bodies of the missing. Meanwhile below tonight, the families of those who died struggling with their loss and here now, abcs kirit radia now. Reporter today there was only agony for families as more bodies were recovered, bringing the death toll among the sherpa guides to 13. Rescuers have all but given up hope of finding the missing three alive. At base camp today, reports say some foreigners who planned to climb mt. Everest are turning back and that the sherpas want to suspend climbing on the mountain for four days as a sign of respect. The victims were all highly skilled local guides. Their work is dangerous, but essential for climbing everest. They carry gear and set the path ahead of foreign clients. The avalanche happened around 6 30 in the morning. A large group of sherpas were making their way up the south side of the mountain. Near camp one and 19,000 feet, the glacier gave way. Witnesses described a terrifying wall of ice. The cloud was coming down and yeah, i mean for a few seconds i thought, wow, this is going to take me out and my sherpa. Reporter why the risk . Everest is big business. Every year, hundreds of foreigners come to climb the worlds highest peak, each of them paying from 50,000 to more than 100,000 for the chance. But only a tiny fraction of that goes to the sherpas who not only carry all that weight, but also much of the risk. The sherpas are sometimes carrying superhuman loads, and im talking about more than their own body weight on their back across yawning, very deep crevasses. Reporter rescue operations will resume again tomorrow. Everyone praying for a miracle. Kirit radia, abc news, london. Kirit, thanks. Next to the hunt for Malaysia Flight 370 and what will be a critical weekend. Officials say the underwater drone has narrowed the search area significantly now and if it finds no trace of the missing plane, all parties will need to, quote, regroup and reconsider. A sonar scan of the sea floor is expected to be completed in the next week. Back here at home tonight and to wyoming. A land slide in one home is now cut in two. Abcs Mike Boettcher with the stunning image tonight. Reporter a home hanging on for dear life on the Mountain Side above jackson, wyoming, an ever widening crack, a sign of a Mountain Side about to give way. We were told that the hillside was unstable and that crack started to form and the asphalt is starting to come up and looks like the road is sinking a little bit. Reporter why its happening no one knows for sure. It could be recent construction at the site or the wet winter thats loosened the rocks and soil. If the hillside gives way, experts say it wont be suddenly like this land slide caught on camera in italy. Fresh in everyones mind, the oso, Washington Land slide last month that killed 39. That Mountain Side gave way in an instant without warning. An extremely wet winter there liquefied a slope above a populated valley, resulting in a high death toll. There is no National Monitoring system for unstable hillsides scattered across the country. At the bottom of the mountain today Jackson Police have evacuated homes and businesses. Reporter tonight, weve Learned Police busted suspected highway shooter Muhammed Whitaker after some serious detective work, tailing him for at least a week as he drove aggressively on the roads, stalking potential victims. He tried unsuccessfully to buy a gun with laser sight. In came the tips. A woman spotted a man wearing a hoodie and mask in 70degree weather. She wrote down the license plate number on this dodge neon. Then empty bullet boxes found on the side of the road, a fingerprint match. Whittaker stands charged with nine of those 20 highway shootings that injured three. His family says they never saw it coming. Im totally shocked. It doesnt seem logical he would do that because i thought he had a good support system. His dad was always there for him. Reporter police say whitaker denied knowing about the shootings but then changed his story, claiming he was a victim. Still no word on any motive. For now those drivers caught in the crossfire still have those bullet holes on their minds. Even though youre relieved, youre still asking why was my car shot at . I still have a lot of questions. Why was he doing this, what is the motive. Reporter here in Kansas City Police say these highways are now safe, but prosecutors tell us they could charge whittaker with even more crimes. David .
