Newly released video tonight a short time ago from houston. Four Police Officers fired after a deadly shooting there. News tonight on the mother accused in the deaths of her own children. Her new husband also facing charges. She had told authorities the children were safe. And what weve now learned tonight. And remembering a wellknown actress whose career spanned decades, including game of thrones. Good evening and its great to have you with us here on a very eorrific imas coming in right now from the fires. That father trying to reach his own family. And the new warning from one governor tonight. But were going to begin tonight with the president , who came before the cameras this afternoon to defend himself, to defend his own words recorded by journalist bob woodward. The president months ago telling woodward that the coronavirus was far deadlier than the flu, that it goes through the air. And the president was recorded acknowledging he was downplaying the virus here in the u. S. And after acknowledging in private it was deadlier than the flu, weeks later, telling the American People it was a little bit like the flu and that it would go away quickly. Our jon karl pressing the president today and what he said in those recordings versus what he said in front of the cameras to the American People. So tonight here, how the president responded, how hes defending his words. And so jon karl leads us off. Reporter President Trump tonight insisted he did not lie to the American People despite what he told bob woodward about intentionally playing down the threat posed by coronavirus. I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down, because i dont want to create a panic. Reporter on february 7th, he told woodward the virus was more deadly than the worst flus. It goes through air, bob. Thats always tougher than the touch, you know, the touch, you dont have to touch things. Right . But the air, you just breathe the air and thats how its passed. Its also more deadly than your, you know, your even your strenuous flus. Reporter three weeks later, he told the American People something different. But thats a little bit like the flu, a little like the regular flu that we have flu shots for. I really think, doctor, you want to treatment this like you treat the flu, right . You know, its going to be fine. Reporter today, i asked him to explain. Why did you lie to the American People and why should we trust what you have to say now . Thats a terrible question and the phraseology. I didnt lie. What i said is we have to be calm. We cant be panicked. Your question, the way you phrased that is such a disgrace. Its a disgrace to Abc Television network, its a disgrace to your employer and thats the answer. Are you ready . Because i reporter are you saying you didnt i love of course i didnt reporter you said it was deadlier no, no. Reporter than the flu and you went out and told the American Public that this was just like the flu. Let me tell you something, we had flu years reporter you told everybody else something else. No, and five times, right . Five times. You ever hear the expression five times . Weve had flu years where we lost 100,000 people. The flu is a very serious problem for this country also. Reporter you told bob woodward this is worse than the most strenuous, deadlier than the most strenuous flu. Okay. Reporter and then you went out and said its just like the flu. What i went out and said was very simple. Listen, what i went out and said was very simple. I want to show a level of confidence and i want to show strength as a leader and i want to show that our country is going to be fine one way or the other. Reporter so you wont downplay it again . You wont downplay it again, because you said you downplayed it. Thats what you told bob woodward. All im doing is no, i dont want to jump up and down and start screaming death, death, because thats not what its about. We have to lead a country. Reporter the president then tried to deflect blame to woodward. If bob woodward thought what i said was bad, then he should have immediately, right after i said it, gone out to the authorities. Reporter in an interview with 60 minutes, woodward said it was the president s responsibility to be truthful with the American Public. This is the tragedy. A president of the United States has a duty to warn. The public will understand that, but if they get the feeling that theyre not getting the truth, then youre going down the path of deceit and coverup. Reporter for his part, joe biden is saying the president s mishandling of the pandemic has cost american lives. You saw what Columbia Medical School pointed out in march. If he acted one week earlier, thooed be over 31,000 more people alive. He waved a white flag. He walked away. He didnt do a damn thing. Think about it. Think about what he did not do. And its almost criminal. So, lets get to jon karl live at the white house tonight. And jon, we know the president is holding a rally this evening in michigan. The images already coming in. I know theres some real tension on the ground there, because local Health Officials have been worried about this, michigans governor calling it very distressing . Reporter david, and look at that. This is a fullflown rally. Lots of people, no social distancing, very few masks. It almost certainly violates michigan law, which says no outdoor gatherings with more than 100 people. The campaign, the trump campaign, has already had to cancel events this week set for las vegas and reno, nevada, because local officials there said they were against the law. But the president made it very clear he wants to see reopenings everywhere and he also said that there would not be another shut down, no matter what, even in the experts said there needed to be one. David . Jon karl leading us off at the white house. Jon, thank you. We continue to follow the emergency unfolding across several states tonight. The stories emerging are just awful. The father racing through flames to get to members of his own family. His 12yearold son and the boys grandmother were later discovered. They did not survive. And the new images coming in. Look at this. This is a home near oregon city, oregon. Keep in mind, this image was captured in the middle of the day. Unfortunately, we are feeling the acute impacts of climate change. Heres our chief National Correspondent matt gutman on the fire lines again tonight. Reporter tonight, survivors of that explosion of wildfires in the west offering a glimpse inside. Half the town is going to be gone. At least half the city. Reporter just 24 hours after the governor warned of the states greatest loss of life, the death toll is growing tonight. Southeast of salem, oregon, chris tofte frantically trying to reach his family during the evacuation. I drove through with some pretty big flames, like flames engulfed my car. I cant believe the tires and pop or something, you know. Reporter tragically, after reporter after that interview, the family says, searchers found the bodies of his 12yearold son wyatt and wyatts grandmother peggy. The fires in the medford area destroyed about 600 homes. This le areminder of a neighborhood obliterated. From up here, you dont only get a sense of the scale of the destruction, but also an entire landscape bleached of color. This is a sea of gray and ash and twisted metal. In another neighborhood, tim took us with him to see if his home was still there. With landmarks gone, the neighborhood unrecognizable. A friend of ours had a house here, a couple friends and its so destroyed, i cant even find where it was. Reporter he was with his daughters and grandson, picking through the wreckage. Im so surprised that the people was able to get out of here alive. Reporter his grandson andre finding his prized possession, a lightup keyboard he earned himself. This it was a special gift. Personal gift that he got for learning to ride his bike, so yeah, its gone. Guess what . Remember what we said . Its what . Replaceable, right . Yeah. Right. Okay . So hang onto it, well make something cool with it, okay . Yeah. Reporter in california, the fastmoving bear fire among the nearly 30 major fires burning in the state. Our Kaylee Hartung is in butte county. The fires scorching a record three million acres this year alone, more than 26 times what burned at this time last year, and these firefighters are stretched thin, some working nonstop for nearly a month. Reporter with four months still to go until the end of wildfire season, this year has already produced historic destruction. In washington, fire claiming the life of a 1yearold boy and badly burning his parents. 600,000 acres burned the past three days alone. The town of malden nearly burned to the ground. The governor pointing to climate change. We talk about this as a wildfire. I think we have to start thinking theyre more climate fires. Theyre climate fires, because thats what creates the conditions that makes them so explosive. Just a devastating scene again tonight. Matt gutman in phoenix, oregon. And we can see the pictures there behind you. I know that just in the last couple of hours theyve announced at least two deaths in the community where you are tonight, and i know theyre bracing for the possibility that that toll could rise . Reporter and david, thats because Officials Say that they have not been able to assess the damage or the death toll, because they are simply stretched too thin. And looking out over this, you can tell why the task for investigators of digging through this debris would be so daunting. And with that live drone shot, i wanted to show you the sbeweep the devastation here, this goes on block after block. Entire developments incinerated as far as the eye can see.
