>> for the appetite, try-day friday tease? uh-huh. >> insects. a fun day. ever had insects before? >> not voluntarily. riding on the road open mouth, maybe. paying money for this one. get to that later on. >> stay tuned. first, friday morning, late night meeting of the president and top security advisers over the growing isis threat. >> the security council meeting follows the president's frank admission the u.s. does not have a strategy here to fight the islamic militants. here's abc's martha raddatz. >> reporter: just days after authorizing u.s. surveillance flights over syria to identify possible isis targets, the president is now taking a step back. >> first of all, i want to make sure everybody is clear on what we're doing now because it is limited. the options that i'm asking for from the joint chiefs focuses primarily on making sure that isil is not overrunning iraq. >> reporter: no talk of containing isis, as he said in the past, which would truly involve military action in syria. the primary focus now, said the president, is just protecting americans and infrastructure in iraq. with the surprising acknowledgement that as of now there are no concrete plans yet to take down isis in the region. >> the suggestion seems to have been that we're about to go full scale on an elaborate strategy for defeating isil. i don't want to put the cart before the horse. we don't have a strategy yet. >> reporter: it was back in january that we saw an astonishing increase in violence in iraq. fallujah had fallen and there were concerns that isis would sleep through the north, which is exactly what happened. mosul falling in june. iraqi army collapsing. isis is one of the world's richest terror groups, generating millions of dollars a month for more than 10,000 fighters. unlike traditional al qaeda, it it is a real army, fighting for territory not just terror. the president's cautious language could also be an attempt to signal congress that he will not launch air strikes in syria without consultations. martha raddatz, abc news, washington. >> during his news conference yesterday the president also addressed the growing crisis in ukraine. president obama placing the blame squarely on russia for the latest round of fighting between rebels and ukraine soldiers. ukraine has said russia invaded with tanks and troops at an emergency session, they expressed outrage. >> a threat to the order, international order, is a threat to all of our peace and security. >> in ukraine thousands of residents turned out last night for a relay in support of ukrainian unity and a gesture of defiance. the body of a missing new jersey teenager has been found in israel. he was last seen a week ago when he went hiking in a forest outside of jerusalem. there were fears he may have been kidnapped. it now appears he died accidentally. may be days before we learn the cause of death. closing arguments are set to get under way in the corruption trial of former virginia governor bob mcdonnell and his wife maureen. they're accused of accepting more than $165,000 in gifts, trips and loans, all from a businessman in exchange for promoting his dietary supplements company. leaving court on the last day of testimony, mcdonnell said he is ready for a verdict. >> i realize it may be too strong of words, but i have -- i'm 60 years old. i've done a lot of living. i've had an incredibly blessed life. >> the jury is expected to render a separate verdict for the mcdonnells and his wife. if they are convicted, they could face double digit years in prison and millions in fines. comedienne joan rivers resting comfortably in a new york hospital this morning. she went into cardiac arrest in a doctor's office. just wednesday night, the 81-year-old made an appearance at a new york event and appeared in good health. abc's linsey davis has the latest. >> joan, look this way! >> reporter: joan rivers, the emmy winning, tony nominated funny woman and fashion authority is in a new york hospital in critical condition after she stopped breathing during throat surgery. the legendary comedienne rushed there in an ambulance after going into cardiac arrest. no word on what the throat surgery was for. rivers' daughter melissa boarded a plane from l.a. rushing to her mother's side. >> what's going on? have gotten it right. a lot of incidents in california with celebrities. passed a law that will take effect january 1. anyone convicted of s.w.a.t.'ing could be required to pay up to $10,000 and want to begin with a powerful message from professional football about domestic violence. >> the nfl commissioner now admitting he didn't get it right in a recent case involving a high-profile player. abc's clayton sandell has more. >> it's not right shouldn't be tolerated. >> reporter: nfl commissioner roger goodell agrees with ray rice, it was this video from tmz apparently showing the baltimore ravens star abusing his future wife that earned rice a two-game suspension. but after a public outcry, goodell has now sent a letter and memo to all 32 nfl team owners saying that he made a bad call. and laying down the league's harsh new rules against domestic violence. a six-game suspension without pay for the first offense. and a lifetime ban after the second. and it doesn't just apply to players, but to all nfl personnel, including owners. >> it's not just domestic violence. once you dig into this letter, you realize it's assault, it's violence. it's any kind of violence. >> reporter: a banished player will be allowed to petition for reinstatement after one year. the nfl players' association responded in a statement. if we believe that players' due process rights are infringed upon during the course of discipline, we will assert and defend our members' rights. >> it would be hard as a union to sit there and say we don't agree with this message. >> reporter: since january 2000, 77 nfl players have been involved in domestic violence incidents according to "usa today." ray rice begins his suspension saturday. he says he's already a changed man. >> moving forward i am being a better father, a better husband. >> reporter: perhaps leading the way but with a long way still to go. clayton sandell, abc news, denver. auto racing champ tony stewart returns to competition this weekend, his first race since the death of fellow driver kevin ward jr. stewart has missed three nascar events since his car struck and killed ward during a race in new york earlier this month. stewart has not been charged in ward's death. but the investigation is still ongoing. now the story everyone is talking about this morning. joan rivers is in the hospital after suffering a heart attack. she went into cardiac arrest after throat surgery. her daughter says the 81-year-old comedienne is now resting comfortably surrounded by family. rivers has said she will never retire. in fact, just the night before, she appeared at an event here in new york. turning to the growing isis threat in the middle east and how the president, islamic militant group, released another chilling bit of propaganda. captured syrian soldiers stripped to their underwear, forced to march in the desert before being executed. but this ruthlessness getting a surprising reaction from the white house just days after approving surveillance flights over syria. the president had this to say. >> the suggestion seems to have been that we're about to go full scale on an elaborate strategy for defeating isil. i don't want to put the cart before the horse. we don't have a strategy yet. after the mid-term -- >> the president saying there's no strategy against the group. cabinet secretaries said we'll be crushed. the president's comments, prompting immediate criticism from republicans and damage control from the white house. president obama is also condemning the latest violent push by russian-backed forces in ukraine. here's abc's hamish macdonald. >> reporter: plumes of smoke as shells rain down. ukraine leaders are clear this is a russian invasion. >> the russian military boots are on ukrainian ground. >> reporter: ukrainian forces lost control of a border town and nato says at least 1,000 russian soldiers are inside the country, fighting alongside and supporting pro-russian separatists. but the kremlin was in full denial mode. this satellite imagery, though, is hard to dispute. nato claims it shows russian artillery and troops moving inside ukraine. what's clear is that there is now a war in europe. it has escalated far beyond those fiery protests we witnessed on the streets of kiev earlier this year. what happens here is they light a molotov cocktail, throw it in the direction of the police and then scurry back for protection. >> reporter: those protesters wanted closer ties with europe, but vladimir putin never wanted any of that. and he is serious. russia already annexed crimea back in march. and if rebel forces push farther west, russia might secure a strategically important land corridor all the way to the black sea. the u.s. and allies had struggled to find a united voice to confront putin directly over ukraine. >> russia has to stop lying. the cost of inaction is unacceptable. >> reporter: amash mack hamish macdonald, abc news. lego blocks have helped solve a 23-year-old murder. after a tip from a death row inmate's wife, detectives compared dna samples and ran a check on fingerprints found on legos found at the scene. and they matched the suspect's then-5-year-old son. the man is serving time for murder in arizona. >> occasionally, we run into individuals who are evil. the individual that is being charged with this crime today can only be described as that. >> the sheriff says this should be a lesson to the families of other cold case victims. never, ever give up hope that the case will not be solved. >> what's interesting here, she never would have left the grandchild's toys on the floor, so that was like the first kind of red flag back then. it's like, why are these legos everywhere? >> apparently now that the nephew of the suspect was telling police he had heard the suspect arguing with his wife and that the wife had apparently said she was threatening to tell police he had murdered a woman in utah. it is fascinating though on something that is so small, seeming so inconsequential could piece all this together. >> you can't get away with anything these days when it comes to csi tech, video cameras. you are kind -- it's a nice turn of events in the future. >> amazing. turning to other news. a boston woman recovering this morning after a frightening fall onto the subway tracks. look at surveillance camera. shows a woman falling. stepping off the platform. two passengers end up coming over and rush to her safety. they lift her out. she ended up suffering an injury to her arm. it's still unclear whether her fall was deliberate or accidental. heavy rain in lubbock, texas, left one motorist stranded nearly under water. look at his car. it was swept up by fast-moving currents. a fire department crew had to a ladder truck and basket to pull him from the sinking car and get him to dry land. >> bit of relief there. hopefully relief for the forecast this weekend. here is a look at your weather. more rain in store for parts of the midwest from northeast oklahoma, iowa, wisconsin. also down through the coastal areas of texas, louisiana. most of florida, will be seeing rain unfortunately as well. >> a high of only about 70 in boston today. about 10 degrees warmer in new york. most of the south where it is not raining it's going to get into the 90s and much of the midwest will reach into the 80s today. problem in the sky. for the second time this week a passenger jet was forced to land because of a midair fight in the cabin. >> and once again the battle was over seat space with flight attendants actually caught in the middle here. this time air marshals broke it up. what's going on? abc's david kerley has more. >> reporter: this second air rage incident over reclining seats is now a federal case. the american airlines jet from miami to paris, a man fought with a passenger seated in front of him. he says because his legs hurt from diabetes. a flight attendant tried to calm the man who reportedly became even more irate and grabbed the attendant by the arm. that's when air marshals broke their cover, restrained the man from paris. the flight diverted to boston where the man was taken to the hospital. this just days after a man on a united flight used these knee defenders to keep the seat in front of him from reclining. the woman in front was not happy. threw a cup of water in his face leading to the flight being diverted. a month ago, a toronto s.w.a.t. team bursting onto a jet to take off an unruely passenger. what's going on? >> travelers today are more stressed than ever before. when you finally do get to your seat, there is less room than you have had in the past. >> reporter: last night's case somewhat unique because federal air marshals jumped in. expert marksmen work under cover as i learned at their training center, wearing protective gear for simulated attack, their job is to take out a terroristic threat. but when it comes to an unruely passenger rather than a terrorist, the marshals on board have to make the call. >> we are tasked with protecting the flight deck, flight crew, passengers and then ourselves. >> reporter: as planes have become more
