It was just about a month ago, that the front range cities not far from here had devastating flooding. This is a welcome bunch of Good Morning America energy in this area, robin. So much for school later today. We have a great crowd thats out here with us in times square. Were going to party right along with lakewood high. All of that is ahead. But were going to get started right now with that sudden accident at the state fair in North Carolina. Five injured. And in the hospital after an apparent malfunction overnight on the vortex, a ride that spins and flips passengers upside down. Abcs david kerley is there for us. Good morning, david. Reporter robin, it was a frightening night here at the North Carolina state fair. The light just coming up on the midway now. Of the five people injured, three are still in the hospital. One of them in Critical Condition after that ride malfunctioned, tossing them to the ground. This morning, abc news has obtained this video, showing the moments just after the accident. First responders quickly arriving on the scene, tending to the injured. The vortex ride seen in this video right before the accident, spins and twists, flipping its riders upside down. The ride had stopped. And they were fixing to offload when it started off again. Reporter as soon as it restarted, people were thrown from the ride. They fell probably at least 20 feet. We could see at least three people laying there, nonresponsive. People were trying to see if they were okay. But none were moving. Reporter the victims range in age from 14 to 39 years old. Some of them, members of the same family. And among those injured, one of the operators of the ride. We had a ride operator and all the people that were working on the ride, being interviewed at this time. Reporter this isnt the first tragedy at the North Carolina state fair. 11 years ago to the day, back in 2002, an operator was killed after accidentally falling into the path of this ride, the bonsai, seen here in this youtube video. A spokesperson for the North Carolina state Labor Department said the vortex ride is supposed to be inspected for safety three times a day during the annual fair. Inspected three times a day . What went wrong . We should learn more later this morning. George . Now, we have new details on the murder of that young teacher in massachusetts. One of her students has been charged. And abcs gio benitez has the story. Reporter this morning, a Danvers High School student tells us math teacher Colleen Ritzer offered to help her alleged killer, just hours before her body was found. What exactly did she say to him . Can you stay after . Reporter can you stay after . Yeah. Can you stay after. Reporter ninth grader rania says she was in ritzers final class on tuesday, sitting just two seats away from the accused murderer. 14yearold phil chisolm. He wasnt participating in class the last couple weeks. Hes been really quiet. Extra quiet. Reporter not unusual, she says. For the 24yearold teacher, whose mantra is now in front of the school. Quote, being good to people is a wonderful legacy to leave behind. Law enforcement sources tell abc news, chism followed ritzer into the womens bathroom, killing her with a box cutter. Putting her body in a large recycling bin and moving her to the woods. The whole time, captured on camera, wearing a hat and gloves. Then, sources say, he changed clothes and went to a movie theater, where the manager said he bought a ticket to the woody allen film, blue jasmine, before being found wandering on a highway later that night. He pleaded not guilty. The person you know and that description, does it match . No. Not at all. Thats why were all so shocked. Reporter rania, to know you were there in that last final class of hers. It haunts me. It haunts me all the time that i was in the building and that i saw him after school with her. Reporter and the suspects grandmother told abc news overnight, in florida, that the family has Great Sadness and regret for what happened here. Robin . All right, gio. Thank you. Now, to a dangerous and dramatic kidnapping on the high seas. Two americans taken hostage, singled out by pirates attacking the ship. Abcs brian ross has the latest for us. Reporter u. S. Officials believe the two americans have been taken in the hardtoreach mangrove swamps of nigeria. Safe havens for a number of pirate and militant groups that made a fortune kidnapping american and Foreign Oil Workers in the region. Theyre really getting more sophisticated how they operate. Theyre better funded. They dont take ships in west africa. Theyre really going after ransoms. Reporter the americans were taken off the oil rig supply ship, the sea retriever, in broad daylight. About 15 miles off the coast of nigeria. U. S. Military Officials Say the pirates sorted the crew by nationalities and took captive only the two americans. You take americans, you get a good price. But at the same time, you bring a lot of heat on you, too. Reporter the u. S. Says there is no current plan for a military rescue. Unlike the dramatic case portrayed in the current hit movie captain phillips, when u. S. Navy s. E. A. L. S were brought in to rescue the captain from somali pirates. The actual captain, richard phillips, told abc news correspondent pierre thomas, that pirates are now just part of the job for a sea captain. If you dont want to deal with piracy, you need to get another job. Reporter in fact, piracy on the high seas seems to be a booming criminal business. Especially in the area off nigeria, through which some 30 of the u. S. Oil supply moves. Its a very attractive place to operate in terms of a ransom that you can get and the damage you can do to the industry. So, thats a big problem. Reporter this morning, while Nigerian Security forces search for the two men, fbi agents have been assigned overseas and here in the u. S. , to help the families of the two sailors, as they wait for the pirates to make contact and to learn what it will take to get their loved ones back. Robin . We hope that will be soon. Amidst demands from some republicans that she resign, health and Human Services secretary Kathleen Sebelius, visited an obama Care Call Center in arizona and said she intends to stay on the job. The majority of people calling for me to resign, i would say are people who i dont work for. And who do not want this program to work in the first place. Reporter as some of the contractors responsible for building the site testify before congress thursday, we learned more about how much the site is actually costing. The two largest contracts alone, 375 million. Thats well over twice as much as apple spent developing the iphone. After footing the bill, the American People deserve something that works or start over. Reporter and even though some sparred over who is to blame once again, here we have my republican colleagues trying to scare everybody. Will the gentlemen yield . No, i will not yield to this monkey court or whatever it is. This is not a monkey court. Reporter even some of the democrats on the committee expressed outrage over the problems with the website. He did a radio interview this week after the st. Louis rams reached out to his agent about favre coming out of retirement to play for their team. Favre says theres no chance. Part of the reason is the toll the game has taken on his mind. A few times i kind of went blank there for a while in my career. Reporter future hall of famer, brett favre, describing the last hit he took on the football field. There wasnt much that rattled favre during his 20year nfl career. But in the three years since hes played football, he now admits its whats happening off the field that scares him. Favre telling espn radio, he is experiencing memory loss. I think after 20 years, god only knows the toll. This was a little shocking to me. That i couldnt remember my daughter playing youth soccer. Reporter favre was sacked 525 times in his career. Thats the most for any quarterback since the nfl began keeping those statistics in 1982. I want to live a long time. I want to live healthy. As close to a normal life as i can. Reporter espn has reported on the science of concussions, claiming 60 are the result of helmettohelmet hits. Favre was hit in the helmet prior to the fumble. Reporter the nfl has instituted new rules and penalties for these types of hits. And will pay out more than 375 million to former players to settle a lawsuit without admitting any guilt. For the nfl, this reopens the thing again. The conversation is now front and center. Were squarely in the concussion era in sports and in our culture. And brett favre is now the poster child, if you will, for this issue. Reporter but this legendary player has made it clear, he has no plans to return to the nfl. Its flattering. But you know, theres no way im going to do that. Reporter favre does get his football fix. He works as offensive coordinator for a mississippi high school. Hes not the only nfl legend speaking up, though. Hall of Famer Troy Aikman recently said he suffered from similar issues. Adding if he had a son, he wouldnt discourage him from playing football. The man vindicated after years of fighting to prove he was not guilty in the deaths of his family. And the pictures going viral right now. The photo of the College Football star on the field, that has people calling him the worlds most photo generalic running back. That was during the game. His helmet came off and he looked effortless. Tom brady, watch out. Getting all that. First, the gripping case weve been tracking. The utah doctor on trial for murdering his wife. And yesterday, the most emotional testimony yet when the doctors oldest daughter took the stand to testify against him. Abcs aditi roy has all the latest. Do you recognize this man sitting here . Yes. With the blue tie . Yes. Who is he . My father. Reporter Rachel Macneill began her tearful testimony against her own father. Speaking barely above a whisper. Growing up, my father was my best friend. Reporter now, she believes the man sitting across the court from her thursday, killed her mother. He specifically said to me that he was concerned that there would be a police investigation. That he didnt want anyone to think that he murdered my mother. It was so shocking to me. I said, why . Why would anybody think that . Reporter Martin Macneill appeared emotional during his eldest daughters testimony. He insists hes innocent. His attorneys say Michele Macneill died from a heart disorder in april of 2007. But prosecutors say the former utah physician gave his wife a fatal dose of painkillers, while she was recovering from a facelift. One they say he insisted she have. The alleged motive, an affair. Rachel told jurors her fathers purported mistress became their livein nanny shortly after her mothers death. My dad was cooking. She was sitting there staring at my dad. The children were taking care of themselves. Reporter during crossexamination, macneills attorney tried to point out inconsistencies in her testimony. You never said anything about your dad joking about being single at the luncheon, did you . Again, i dont recall. Reporter and questioned her mental health. And youve been diagnosed bipolar . Have i in my lifetime been diagnosed as bipolar . Yes. Reporter rachels sister, alexis, testified in a closed jury hearing over whether the youngest macneill, ada, should take the stand. She was 6 when she discovered her mother unconscious in the tub. Ive never allowed her to be interviewed. I never allowed her to watch any of the media, television, newspaper. I was concerned. I didnt want her to be tainted in any way. Reporter today, the judge will decide whether ada will be able to tell the jury what she saw the night her family was torn apart. For Good Morning America, aditi roy, abc news, los angeles. This, aditi for that. Lets bring in chief Legal Affairs anchor, dan abrams. Pretty devastating testimony. Oh, yeah. You have this woman talking about everything her father did and said immediately after her mother died, which leads to all these questions. Meaning, this daughter didnt suspect her father. The other daughter did. This daughter, when this happens, is thinking, theres no way that my father could have been involved. And so, when he starts talking about things like, well, we need to get an autopsy immediately. She pointed out that he gave her 5,000 in cash, which he had never given her before. And shes thinking, why is he doing this, et cetera. Very powerful. His lawyers, they didnt give an inch on crossexamination. They have to. If you view her as a really important witness, which she is, they have to go after her. From their perspective, shes lying, right . From their perspective, shes not giving a truthful account. They had to go after her. But it creates an awkward situation, where you have this woman, who seems so emotional. And his lawyers have to basically say, youre not telling the truth and, b, you have a history of mental illness. And the judge has to make a big decision, whether or not to let the 12yearold daughter, ada, to testify about when she found her mothers body. About what happened when she was 6. I think the judge is going to let in the testimony. Theres going to be restrictions. But its pretty clear the judge is going to allow it. How do you crossexamine a little girl . Youre talking a 12yearold. Theyre going to have to do it with kid gloves, so to speak. Gingerly. They have to be tender. They cant go after her. And i think theyre going to have to call in other witnesses, primarily, to say shes got there could be memory problems here. Memory experts. Things someone this age, et cetera. They dont want to push her too much. Dan abrams, thanks very much. Now, another case. The former indiana state trooper found not guilty of killing his wife and children 13 years ago, in his third trial for murder. Very unusual case. David camm had been convicted by two juries. Both convictions were overturned. Abcs linsey davis has his story. Reporter the third time was, indeed, the charge for david camm. This morning, the man twice found guilty for killing his wife and two young children, is a free man. Any thoughts about the verdict . The former indiana state trooper spent more than a decade in prison for a crime he apparently didnt commit. That was the finding of an indiana jury, who came back thursday with a not guilty verdict on all three counts of murder. This is a man who couldnt attend his familys funeral because the prosecutor at the time was in such a rush to have a press conference, they had to arrest him. This is complete vindication after 13 horrific years. Reporter camm has maintained his innocence from his first interrogation 13 years ago. His wife, 7yearold son and 5yearold daughter were found in the garage of their home, shot to death in their cars. Reporter in 2005, dna tied convicted burglar Charles Bonet to the murders. He was stanced 225 years for the deaths. But prosecutors argued that bonet and camm were connected. Twice, camm was convicted. Both convictions over turned on appeal on the grounds that the Court Allowed inadmissible evidence. This time, after 88 witnesses and 8 weeks of trial, the jury was not convinced. The prosecutor said, even if he could appeal this verdict, he wouldnt. So, this morning, david camm is waking up free and clear, for the first time in 13 years. They say fair rides are supposed to be inspected three times a day. The families of two american oil workers being held captive in africa are anxiously awaiting to hear from their loved ones. They were kidnapped off the coast of nigeria. U. S. Officials believe the men are being held by pirate or militant groups, that often seek ransom. The ships crew were sorted by nationality. And only the americans were taken hostage. A National Guard recruiter who opened fire on his fellow soldiers, had just been relieved of duty. Thankfully, the victims survived their injuries. It may soon be harder to get a new prescription for certain painkillers. The fda is proposing restrictions on painkillers with hydrocodone. The new rules would limit the number of refills and require you to take the prescription to a pharmacy, instead of having your doctor call it in.
