Investigators say 59yearold david mcvay admitted to shooting 45yearold melvin roberts. Mcvay told roberts that he was trespassing. An updater began and he shot robert an argument began and he shot roberts in the leg. Mcveigh was taken david mcvay was take into custody. It remains under investigation. Some parts of eastern iowa saw torrential downpours today. And others stayed bone dry. Terry joins us live with what we can expect the rest of the night. Forecast the next 24 hours as hit or miss showers dot eastern iowa. But at least tonight theyre in a weakening phase around the region and our temperatures arent too bad. Most the readings in the upper 60s to lower 70s. But plenty of humidity in the air. Look at the radar now. You can see north of highway 30. Most the showers and storms have dissipated. Theres still a little cluster there just to the southwest of cedar rapids, parts of iowa county in particular. Notice some heavy thunderstorms just an hour ago. Those are weakening and the whole mess will be fizzling toward 10 00 or 11 00 tonight. Tomorrow, though, it gets warm and humid once again. Well generate the instability necessary for more scattered showers and storms. Those will also be in the forecast on a hit or miss basis. And finally by wednesday, some major changes taking place. That will bring a nice change to our forecast. More about it in a few minutes. The linn county board of supervisors is weighing the pros and cons minimum wage above the federal level. They presented the board with letters from dozens of low wage workers who discussed their struggles on minimum wage. The plan would raise linn countys raise 1 an hour for each of the next three years. Eventually getting 10. 25 an hour. Our hope is that theyll and pass that county ordinance. And our hope now is the major cities in linn county will hold the line and do the right thing by upholding the ordinance when its passed. Reporter Board Members will discuss the proposal later this week. Just like the increase in Johnson County, city governments would be able to opt out if they choose. After intense pressure from the public and lawmakers, drug Company Mylan today caved over the cost of the epi pen. It will now generic brand option. The cost of the emergency shot generic version would cost about half as much as the todays announcement means a generic would cost about half as much as the current price. Close to one thousand veterans nationwide are getting the medical help they need close to 1,000 veterans dora miller joins us now to tell us about this unique program with caregivers who volunteer, dora . This program has been in the us since 1999. But the iowa city Va Medical Foster Home Program just kicked off one year ago. Ago. Its a voluntary program that allows caregivers to move veterans into their homes. An alternative to living in a facility. This means the veteran gets the medical attention they need. Without having to stay in a place thats unfamiliar. The local va is asking for help though. Theyre looking for more caregivers who are willing to house veterans. The coordinator of the program says you wont have to do it the veterans needs. She says its important that people realize this program is in demand because you cant underestimate the comfort of a home. A lot of veterans could receive care through the va contract Nursing Home Program which they wouldnt have to pay for and instead choose to pay for medical foster home because they want to have that familylike environment, because they want to live in a home, because they choose not to live in an institution. Institution. If youre interested in finding out more about the program and requirements that come with being a caregiver. We hav city the Foster Home Program is preparing to assign their first veteran to a home. Earleywine when legislators fail to invest in education here, it affects all of us in here. We still have a few sprinkles going on in cedar rapids, at least broadcast part. The temperature, 72 degrees. And theres the dew point, same as the temperature. That yields humidity tonight at 100 . Its juicy out there. To lower 70s. And thanks to the high dew points, temperatures will not go down too much more tonight. Well keep our lows generally in the upper 60s. Now, you can see these clouds coming from southwest to east across iowa here. Theres that tropical moisture we talked about coming up from the gulf of mexico. Earlier in the day, showers and thunderstorms popped during the greatest instability, afternoon hours where you get the the day. The temperatures showing a lot of spread around eastern iowa today where there was more sunshine around cedar rapids. We got up to 87 degrees there but not far away to the northeast and northwest, only low 80s in waterloo and dubuque. The high today, southeastern corner of the state. Heres the radar tonight. And you can see that north of highway 30, most the showers however, around cedar rapids, still a few light showers. These are dying before our eyes right now. And these are gradually going to sink to the southeast and fall apart. So i would say no more than an hours worth of rain in this area. And whats here is pretty light. Further south, stronger storms into Washington County. So this part of our viewing area here, you you can still see a you can still see a thunderstorm here. But a major weakening trend. Theyll be fizzling out prty this is the rainfall estimates. You can see where theres green at least 1 3 an inch of rain today. But when you get into the yellows and reds, thats where there was an inch or two inches of rain. We have an estimate here southeast of iowa. Not far from lone tree. About 2. 7 inches of rain. There are a lot of spots that didnt see anything today. Hit or miss on the showers and storms. The national satellite, you can continue to see the moisture so that will be in place again tomorrow. And the same situation is expected around here. Look for high temperatures to be back up into the low to mid 80s. Dew points should climb well into the 70s tomorrow afternoon. And that will create the instability necessary for additional showers and storms. But eventually theres going to be a low pressure front formed to the north of us. That will come on through tomorrow night. Once thats on through, it will end the chance of showers and thunderstorms by wednesday. After that, well get northwest flow aloft. By the way we get to thursday and friday, some excellent weather expected just in time for the start of the Holiday Weekend with temperatures in the 70s and much less humidity. And certainly no chances for rain once that happens. So our forecast for tonight, then, does call for a few widely scattered storms for the next hour or so. After that, things quiet after midnight. Could have patchy areas of fog by morning. For tomorrow, well heat things particular. Scattered showers and storms should develop once again. But very hit or miss. And those are expected to go away on wednesday as you can see with a high of 78. Thursday, low 70s. Friday looks nice to start the weekend out. And at this point, the next chance of showers and storms doesnt come until about labor day its. And the temperatures will start off pretty itself. And the temperatures will start off pretty nice. But warmer sunday and monday as we climb into the middle 80s. But this pattern lingers for one more day. Reporter if approved, that same rule would be applied county wide. And ecigarettes would be included. The Johnson County department of health came to us to educate us on ecigarettes and how, you know, the vapor, county now, looking for a countywide ordinance to fill in all the rest of the county. Beardsley says Public Health is talking with . Iowa city leaders about adding the 25 foot requirement to the citys ordinance. There are some things in e such as volatile organic 25 on adding the 25foot limit on the ordinances. Theres chemicals, formaldehyde, heavy metals, and the nicotine that can be harmful to health. Reporter Public Health authorities are also talking to county leaders, hoping to persuade them to adopt the proposal. I think having a Healthy Lifestyle is having that quality of life. Terry it looks like were seeing the end of the popup thunderstorms, at least for tonight, the storm track is coming southwest, cutting through the plain states and cutting through eastern iowa. Thats bringing up a lot of gulf of mexico moisture and depositing it over the upper midwest. You can see the clouds we dealt with late this afternoon and tonight. Here and there, scattered showers and thunderstorms. These are kind of rogue in nature. They just pop up where they want. Theyre not associated with any particular front. Its just you get the heating of the day and yo moisture in the air. Just like in the tropics, showers and thunderstorms form. When the sun goes down and the atmosphere starts to stabilize, they go away. And so thats the process thats underway here tonight as the storms are gradually dissipating. But it was a warm day, no doubt about that. We got up to 87 degrees in cedar rapids with afternoon sunshine. But out to the north and northeast of us, the temperatures quite a bit cooler today thanks to some showers and storms and more clouds found in that part of our viewing area. In waterloo. Theres dubuque. Now the showers and storms that came up during the afternoon and evening hours are quickly dying out. You can see the last of this batch here thats been just west of cedar rapids for a couple hours is pretty well fizzled out. And other heavier thunderstorms down to the south of us in Washington County are now sinking southward. We dont see much in the way of lightning anymore. And were losing our color here. So t these are going to be dying a quick death. And after 10 00 and after 10 00, all our viewing area should be precipitation free. As we go to satellite, theres a large High Pressure perched over eastern united states. And the circulation around that is rotating that warm, tropical air into the midwest. Thatll hold on through the day tomorrow. But eventually, a cold front to the northwest of us. And that will cross the midwest thunderstorms. Tomorrow, though, no such luck. Humidity back with us. Temperatures back in the low to mid80s and dew points well into the 70s, so another very stuffy afternoon. And that will lead to scattered showers and thunderstorms on a hit or miss basis. But eventually that front will develop to the northwest of us. That will come on across the area, then, as we get through tomorrow night and wednesday. So that will end the showers and thunderstorms, bring some cooler air in here and a by the way we get to the end of the week with this northwest flow in place, some very nice weather expected across the upper midwest. So well put away the showers and thunderstorms several days to come and bring you more comfortable conditions. But tonight, scattered storms to the west. After that, looks like skies will be mostly cloudy. And there could be patchy areas of fog. Temperatures holding in the mid to upper 60s for lows. Then for tomorrow, looks like well heat it up once again. With all the humidity, widely scattered showers and thunderstorms. Not everybody will see them. But if you happen to get one, theres chances for locally heavy rainfall. 83 in cedar rapids. 82 in dubuque and waterloo. By wednesday, back in the 70s. The showers and thunderstorms are gone. Thursday looks to be a real fine day. Almost falllike, 73. Then for friday, were at 75.
