The gazette reports 38 yearold shaun hogan pleaded guilty to Second Degree murder. He admitted to beating 28 yearold crystal gaffney with a wrench and stabbing her in the head with a screwdriver. Hogan was originallll charged with firstdegree murder. Gaffneys body was found on the linnbuchanan road on july 9th. Shortly after, an amber alert was issued for her two children, one hurt. Hogans exwife Tamera Mcclaren told police she suspected hogan was responsible for gaffneys death after he asked to drop off the children with her. Police arrested hogan the next day. He faces up to 50 years in prison. His sentencing is set for may 20th. A fire this morning at an Apartment Building in cedar rapids sent two people to the hospital. Cedar rapids firefighters responded to 702 ninth street southwest just before 2 this morning. Crews extinguished the fire on the main floor of the building, and stayed on ene until 4 am to m mitor hot spots. Everyone inside got out before firefighters arrived. The iowa regents say they never heard about an incident involving the university of iowas interim Public Safety director and his driving crash. The Associated Press obtained records showing Public Safety director david visin refused to pull over for police while driving his stepson, sean crane, in june. Officers were looking for crane after his truck hit two cars in a parking lot outside a bar. Instead of stopping, records show visin dropped crane off at a gas station and then left before officers arrived. Visin says hes diabetic and needed to rush home to control his blood sugar. The regents subcommittee on Campus Safety didnt find o o about the incident until the ap broke the story yesterday. Interviews started today for applicants who want to sit on the Dubuque County board of supervisors. A total of 25 people are vying for one vacant seat on the board. The seat opened up when supervisor tom hancock died in late january from an apparent heart attack. Treasurer, and recorder, is interviewing the 25 candidates before making a decision. A new report from the state Auditors Office shows those efforts helped iowa rerein more than one and a half million dollars. That money will go towards things like airport upgrades, runway markings and weather observation systems, according to the audit released yesterday. Starting in 2014, the state started tracking down unregistered aircraft. It found 714 aircraft not registered with the Iowa Department of transportatio n as of february 2015.
