Reporting in washington, im kellie meyer today a Virginia Police officer killed on her first day will be laid to rest. The funeral for officer Ashley Guindon started just a few minutes go. This is video from her procession in the city of woodbridge yesterday. Guindon was one of three officers shot on saturday while responding to a Domestic Violence call. Say this week has been difficult for the entire community. Its taking a toll on everybody that knows these officers. There were very few dry eyes in the Police Department over the last few days. 32yearold Ronald Hamilton faces a capital murder charge in the case. The Us Energy Information Administration Says thats more than any other state in the country. Iowa is 6 Percentage Points ahead of south dakota and kansas. Governor branstad says there is a potential for the state to generate about 40 of energy from wind in the next 5 years. The Marion Public Library officially has a new director. This morning, the city announced Elsworth Carman will become the new director. He comes from oak park illinois, which is just outside of chicago. Carman was manager of Library Experiences and initiatives in Public Services at a library there. He officially take over the position on april 18th. Current director, doug raber, retires this month. The future owner of the hamburg inn 2 says he doesnt plan to change the feel of the popular restaurant. Michael lee will take over the iowa city restaurant on thursday. In just a month, iowa will switch to a privatized medicaid system that affects some 560,000 iowans. After federal regulators ordered 2 delays, the the state of kansas implemented a similar system 3 years ago. Kcrg tv nines Sarah Mccarthy spoke with hospital officials in that state to learn how the changes there might also affect the medicaid system here. About four percent of patients at this rural hospital in sabetha, kansas rely on medicaid to cover their health care bills. And while thats not a huge number, it has forced the hospital to make some changes. And those changes could be a reality for iowa hospitals soon. 22 00 the ceo of this hospital says working with three Insurance Companies to file claims is more complicated than the old system of state reimbursement. Those complications mean it often takes longer for this hospital to be paid for services. Theyve had to hire more staff to handle the paperwork load, which means paying more to workers. And farm groups are lining up behind this legislation they think will head off a thread of patchwork gmo labeling laws. Which they say are different labeling laws in different states in july. Vermont will be the first state to impose a mandatory labeling of foods that have gmos. Farm groups and senate will create market chaos and higher food costs. On thursday the Senate Ag Committee will mark up that labeling bill. And its unsure if there will be enough votes on the democrat side. According to the draft, the senate bill would require usda to set a voluntary National Food labeling standard for genetically engineered foods, preempt state labeling laws on both gmo foods and seed, and require usda to provide consumers with information on the benefits of biotechnology. Roberts says he is open to amendments to the bill. He hopes it will stop the commodities are keeping with the down trend at the end of last week. Starting off this week mostly in the red. Federal regulators in canada and the us announced new ways they hope to reduce the phosphorus levels of lake erie. Administration s hope to reduce the levels by minimizing the extent of low oxygen dead zones in the targets would then maintain algae growth at consistent levels. The recent mild weather weviowa has created perfect conditions one Dubuque County farm is making the syrup 3 weeks kcrgtv9s Katie Wiedemann talked to one family already at work and has more. Northwest Dubuque County, the wolf family taps these mature maples trees, to extract what the rest of us love on our pancakes. This one in particular is the sap out of the tree. And that all starts just as soon as the weather cooperates. I think this could be one of the best years weve ever had, ya know. And it seems, this year, mother to have a sweet tooth. You need it to drop below 32 degrees at night. And then above 32 degrees during the day. You have that freezing and in that tree and it releases the hundreds and hundreds of gallons of sap. We process anywhere from eight to nine hundred gallons of raw sap an hour. Inside this old machine shed, boiling equipment to turn that sap into a savory syrup. Then the family fills that sweet stuff into 16 oz bottles. We are ready for the new season so were ready to put this right on the shelves. So it will be fresh. This is all natural. There are no preservative in it. Theres nothing added to it at all. Just straight from the tree. And thats something this family is proud to produce, no matter if Winter Weather is set to return. A waterloo man convicted of killing a man last year will get a new trial. 25yearold Perquondis Holmes faces a first degree murder charge for the death in 2013. His attorneys say the judge shouldnt have allowed prosecutors to use some facebook photos during the trial. The pictures showed him and another man using gang signs. Police say holmes shot at another car that had pulled into a parking lot behind an apartment building. The bullets killed 18 year old daequan campbell. They just want to make a busy road safer for everyone especially with continued growth in student population. City leaders say the study is part of the citys long deal with Consulting Firms. The university of iowas interim Public Safety director is in trouble for not cooperating with officers during a drunken hitandrun incident involving his stepson. Court records show dave visins stepson, sean carter, was drunk when his truck hit two cars outside of a bar on june 25th.
