From sudden cardiac arrest. A study from the American Heart Association shows African Americans are more likely to die from the condition than caucasians. Martie salt has the story of one family whos refusing to be another statistic. It can happen in a matter of minutes. For years, fortytwo year old Tashia Youmans loved making memories with her family. All the while, she time bomb. It was a hole in my heart. And i could look at my fingertip and i go wow, this is about 10 millimeters. at a yearly checkup, tashias doctor found the hole, which they say she had since birth. That defect greatly increased her odds of suffering sudden cardiac arrest. Sometimes i didnt really want to sit there and actually have to hear it, um but i knew i had to, um for her, for my wife. Tashia and her family are not alone. New research from the American Heart Association shows that blacks are twice as likely as whites to experience sudden cardiac arrest. And the more concerning thing is that they were, they actually tended to be younger than the, their caucasian counterparts. The study also found blacks had higher rates of other risk factors like diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney failure. Experts arent sure why they found a discrepancy, but some say its a wakeup call. Prevention will make all this better. So we really should start looking at prevention rather than treatment for most of these conditions. Tashia is thankful doctors were able to repair the hole in her heart before it was too late. The family has adopted a hearthealthy diet and lifestyle. Thank god that im still alive and im glad i actually acted on my um instinct to go to the doctor. For the study, researchers collected data on black and white residents in portland, oregon who experienced sudden cardiac arrest over a 10 year period. Researchers are also studying variables in communities with large latino populations. The new year is almost here. And legislators are debating a massive trade deal, which usda leaders say could help farmers. Coming up, david geiger breaks it down in the agribusiness report. Good morning this is the david geiger. Heading into the new year. The white house put a massive trade deal at the top of 2016 agenda. The Transpacific Partnership covers 12 pacific rim nations. Including the us. And president obama is optimistic. Congress can approve the trade pact. Even though Senate Leaders say there arent enough votes. Leaders in the usda. Say t pp helps us ag compete by removing a lot of tariffs. And it was a hard fought deal. It took more than 38 negotiating sessions. And so a lot of work has gone in there. We consulted a great deal with our advisory committees our private sector advisory committees. To make sure that it reflected the sort of priorities and strategic objectives we have in agriculture and so i think weve done a great job and i think a lot of people in Rural America will come to the same conclusion. Not all of Rural Americans are on board. The National Farmers union came out against tpp. They say there are some countries that have snapback provisions. Which says if a country thinks its industry is being harmed. They can replace the tariffs. Since prices are going down, our live cattle prices are going down and now we have a trade with no currency manipulation and these snap back provisions it is going to harm family us to import more and decrease our prices here in the united states. Currency manipulation. Or countries devaluing from them cheaper. And products from the us more expensive. Is the other major issue the nfu and trade deal. Last week the American Farm bureau voted to support t pp. Their Economist Says currency manipulation is too vague to dismiss the whole deal. I think currency manipulation can be really difficult to document and prove. In that respect, its difficult to create concrete guidelines that you can fall back on in any situation to definitely identify currency manipulation or provide remediation for it. So currency manipulation is kind of a tough thing i think to concretely work into these kind of trade deals. If you want to learn more about Agricultural Service has graphics on their website. Www dot fas dot usda dot gov forward slash tpp. The markets closed at noon thursday for the rest of the weekend. So for a recap i asked analyst don roose about the days heading into the christmas weekend. The grain market, what were really seeing is people positioning for the three day weekend. Fear that we could see a pattern change ahead of the end of the weekend next week. And so what were seeing is some pressure, some profit taking on the soybeans. Argentina continues to sell grain at very depressed levels on corn and soybeans and wheat. And theyre trading corn in argentina about 25 cents less than us so it anchors the corn market close to contract lows. The Cattle Market has had 180 reversal in the news from a negative to a positive. Poor feedlot conditions continue to support the Cattle Market. The beef markets found a bottom. The down. So the technical buying continues in the Cattle Market to the upside. Now were getting a little bit overbought. Well the hog market we did have a quarterly hogs and pigs report. The report was neutral with a tint to the positive side. So were having the hog market following the Cattle Market to the upside. Overall, the Cattle Market the hog market probably stalls out a bit also. And that wraps up our show for today. Thanks for joining us today on the agribusiness report. Ill see you again tomorrow.
