The city reopened the third, eighth and 16th avenue bridges this evening. But its warning people to be cautious of any remaining debris that could be on the road. And the city hopes to have all of the bridges and all of the on and off ramps to interstate 380 reopened by tomorrow morning. Tomorrow is a big day for Flood Recovery in cedar rapids. People who live and work in the evacuation zone removed sandbags and barriers today in hopes of making things run smoothly when the general public is cedar rapids will also be back to normal tomorrow morning. City buses havent taken passengers for a week. Also, by seven tomorrow morning, two sandbagging sites will be open. One is at ellis park by the Tennis Courts and the other is in the noelridge pool parking lot. Thousands of people in the flood evacuation zones of cedar rapids finally headed home for good today. The citys evacuation area declared before the flood last weekend expired at noon today. The zone could return home. The vast majority found no water damage at all inside. One of the few exceptions were homes on the wet side of the protection barriers along ellis boulevard northwest. And even there, most of the basement damage came from sewer backups and not water from the river. Well, ive got to get sandbags out of here and im supposed to have some help tomorrow morning at the final city flood many homes and businesses in the evacuation areas near the river. Inspectors have found only a small number with actual flood damage inside. Those with damage might hire a contractor to make repairs. But the attorney general is warning people to check out the contractor, before paying in full or letting them start work. The Attorney Generals Office will be at the Downtown Cedar Rapids Library monday. Representatives will be answering questions and contractor, avoiding fraud, and pricegouging. Thats from 10 to three on monday. The city has also set up a phone line for people to verify contractors are licensed here in iowa. That number is 3192865929. Businesses are getting back to work in downtown. At reds public house, employees and volunteers brought back alcohol, tables and chairs. Some businesses say theyll need while others are already open. One employee at reds says they got a lot of help along the way. Everyone pulled together, did our sandbags, got all of our food and every thing and well be pen back up by monday. Restaurant employees say they hope people will rally and spend a lot of time and money in downtown to help make up for lost business. One cedar Rapids Organization has seen this flood event inspire a lot of positive act started moving things from the first floor to the second floor last thursday. The nonprofit supports more than 800people with intellectual disabilities. Today, they were ready to move things back to the first floor. The executive director says people and companies from around cedar rapids came to their location willing and ready to help move things. Its just been overwhelming to see the outpouring of response. You know we had last friday, we had people showing up with trucks and help you . In some cases, we put them to work and other cases, we said go to the y. The arc of east central iowa plans to have most of their programs back running on monday. Cedar Rapids Police have yet to make an arrest in the stabbing death of a teen early this morning. Police say someone stabbed 18 year old around two this morning at 6725 College Park Court southwest. An ambulance took the teen to a cer hour later. Police say they have brought several people in for questioning, but dont have a suspect. Des moines Law Enforcement are trying to figure how a woman died and why her body was left in a minivan in a hospital parking lot for days. Police identified the woman as angela eubanks. Shes 49 and lived in waukee. Someone saw the body about eight yesterday morning in the vehicle parked at broadlawns hospital in circumstances suspicious. A hospital Spokesman Says hes never seen anything like this before. The unusual thing about this was that the body wasnt visible from the outside. That was a real striking feature that made us all scratch our heads. The hospital spokesperson says police ran the plates to see if the van belonged to an employee. It didnt. Police say an autopsy found no evidence of traumatic injury. The state lab is running toxicology tests. Iowa citys city manager named a new interim Police Campbell will step into the role tomorrow. Hes been with the Iowa City Police department for 26 years. The state only allows an interim chief to serve for 90 days. So, captain campbell is taking over for captain troy kelsay who will return to regular duties tomorrow. Iowas police chief Sam Hargadine retired june 30th of this year. He had been chief since august of 2005. Senator Chuck Grassley has backed out of the debate was supposed to be on october 20th and would have been the only televised debate between grassley and judge. A group called the neighbors of manville Heights Association didnt like that idea. So they appealed the citys decision, citing the homes size and potential for big parties. Yes, the neighbors of the manville Heights Association, the group trying to put a stop to the house were not happy. In an effort to avoid the homecoming parade in town, tonights meeting was in a different spot across town at a recycling center. And this unlike the other two meetings that lasted close to five hours each. The Manville Heights Neighborhood Association argued the city wrongly classified the house as a singlefamily residence. The city of iowa city could not find enough evidence as to why the house could not be classified as a singlefamily residence. But opponents argued the home would be mixeduse, or used for things other than just living situations. Tonight each board member took turns explaining their reasoning behind favor say the home does not fit into that singleuse home description, rather was part of an entirely new category that the city needs to create rules for in the future. There are usually five board of adjustment members, but only four could rule over the kinnickstyle case because one had expressed an opinion.
