The fire happened around 12 45 saturday afternoon at the couples home at 314 howard street. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control in about a half hour. Cedar rapids will hold a groundbreaking this afternoon for a new 14 Million Dollar levee that its at 3 oclock, near the intersection of 2nd street and 16th avenue southeast. This levee will run from south of the former sinclair site to 12th avenue se near the African American museum of iowa. The city says it will provide immediate protection to the area for up to a 40 year flood. The project also includes a 4. 4 acre detention basin. And a pump station with a capacity of 2,500 gallons per minute. These improvements will be completed by sandbags to protect cedar rapids two weeks ago, the city estimates the cost to remove all of the sandbags to be about 475,000. Sandbag pickup is not expected to start today but early wednesday on the far Northwest Side of cedar rapids. The contractor the city hired to do the work wasnt ready to go yesterday. The city expects itll take about 3 weeks to get all the sandbags people have put out at their curbs. One woman was still moving sandbags yesterday, and said shes happy about the delay. This way we dont miss out. Its only a one time deal, so thats my understanding the city is asking people to put their sandbags in the public rightofway along their front curb, in the street on lightly traveled streets, or on any portion of a driveway. The city will not take sandbags that are in an alley. And make sure theyre out by wednesday, because theyre only coming by once to pick them up. Cedar falls says the city has fixed some road problems that the recent flooding caused. But areas in the northern part whenever cedar falls floods, the part of the city north of the cedar river is prone to flooding its very flat. A levee was built to keep the downtown area dry, so the flood didnt affect that part of cedar falls. The citys major says a study done 20 years ago showed building a levee for northern cedar falls would cost more than the areas value.
