More than 10 inches of rain fell this week, causing rivers to swell and leaving some communities under water. The flooding has also contaminated this Water Treatment plant in high ridge. Thats just southwest of saint louis. The Iowa National guard will struggling in that town and nearby murphy over the weekend. Tv9s Dave Franzman joins us live this morning where the troops are just about to take off to head to missouri. Dave, how are they going to help with the massive relief effort there . Nicole, theyre bringing clean water to to people who desperately need it. The river that goes through high ridge is currently at 27 feet flood stage is 16, so it took out their Water Treatment plant that Treatment Plant purifies water for the whole town. Troops will bring 16 tanks, which hold 2 thousand gallons of potable water, and can pump 125 gallons per minute. Residents in the town go through about a million gallons of water a day and thats with a working Treatment Plant. With it offline, theyre going to go through water very fast. The soldiers know just how important clean water is with the flooding a lot of folks are out of their homes, that takes off their food supply , theyre not able to cook, their not able to bathe, and water is an essential thing to life. You can go up to 2 weeks without food but only a couple days without water. Troops say it means a lot for a neighboring state to ask for help and they are looking forward to help the residents who desperately need it. The Sheriffs Office says it happened around 645 yesterday highway 18 about 2 miles west of west union. Deputies say a garbage truck was backing into a farm driveway when the pickup crashed into it. The pickup driver, phillip white, his passenger. Melinda scribner, both of nashua, suffered life threatening injuries. The garbage truck hit Jeremiah Geary of fayette, who was collecting trash. Police responded to the club 319 bar on the corner of east Fourth Street and lafayette in Downtown Waterloo around two oclock this morning. While there, officers noticed a group in an alley near the bar. As they approached, they heard several gunshots and away. One person has a nonlife threatening gunshot wound. An officer did fire at an armed person, but missed. Officers arrested several armed people in the area and are investigating. Two men in their 20s are in the hospital this morning after a car hit them in cedar falls another with injuries from a fight in a parking lot. Police responded to the alley next to voodoo lounge off main street just after midnight. Authorities say a car hit the two men and then sped away. All three are expected to be okay. Authorities believe the hit and run and fight might be related. Some members of the Iowa National guard are ringing in the new year with a mission. While there, the troops purification and Transportation Services to the 65 hundred residents living there. Approximately 45 members and 20 vehicles from cedar rapids will be in high ridge. Missouri asked for help from iowa after extensive flooding contaminated one of the towns Water Treatment plants. The missouri, meramec and mississippi rivers are starting to crest. The iowa troops say it means a lot that a neighboring state is asking for their help. Hawkeye fans stood in line for hours just to be a part of the fun. Its incredible how many hawkeye fans are here, isnt it . Its absurd. Its insane. They that fan travelled all the way from North Carolina to see the game. Another fan got there hours early and was number 50 in line to get on the battleship hawkeye fans are especially excited this year since its been 25 years since the hawkeyes went to the rose bowl. The fans are ready to see a win, and so are the players. Coach kirk ferentz says hes confident in his team. And last night at the teams final press conference he said iowa has a unique recruitment strategy. Some Allegiant Airline passengers are counting themselves lucky this morning. Their plane from Orlando Florida to the Eastern Iowa Airport had to make an emergency landing. About 45 minutes into the flight yesterday, passengers say they heard a noise that sounded like something was dropping from the plane. So the pilot decided to land in chattanooga, tennessee. Allegiant says the plane did have a problem with its right engine. Passengers on that cedar rapidsbound flight say the landing in chattanooga was a bit rougher than usual. But all praised the pilots and crew for keeping people informed of what was happening. Nearly all the 150 passengers boarded a replacement plane. They just after 2 oclock yesterday afternoon. That was about six hours behind schedule so the people were more tired than worried. Being stuck in chattanooga, its smaller than this airport, like being in disneyland had to wait an hour for a sandwich. Didnt get to ride anything. Allegiant airlines offered all the inconvenienced passengers a 100dollar voucher for a future trip or a refund if they decided not to continue the flight. Several passengers told tv9 some people saw flames shooting from the back of one of the two engines on the aircraft. This isnt the first time allegiant has encountered issues like this one. The federal Aviation Administration is investigating an incident from august when a mechanical failure caused an allegiant planes nose wheel to lift prematurely. The pilot aborted the takeoff. The faa hasnt commented on the investigation. Many people are probably sleeping in this morning after last nights new years eve celebrations. About a Million People crowded into new york citys times square to watch the famous ball drop to ring in 2016. Organizers expected another 100 Million People in the us to watch it on t v, with worldwide viewership of more than a billion. The ball is 12 feet in diameter and weighs nearly 12thousand pounds. Its covered with nearly threethousand Waterford Crystal triangles and more than 32 thousand led lights. The annual celebration has been going on for more than a century, and the famous times square ball made its debut on december 31, 1907. Organizers say more than a thousand people took the week between christmas and new years is a time when almost everyone has extra trash. Landfill operators hope the word gets out about what can and can not be recycled. The cedar rapids and Linn County Solid Waste Agency saw a major increase in recycling drop offs this week as people clear out the holiday trash. People who got new tvs last week can recycle their old one for a 5 dollar fee. But one concern is wrapping paper. Its not the same as other paper that can be recycled. Thats one of the biggest questions this time of year. What do i do with wrapping paper what do i do with styrofoam. We just tell everyone throw it away. Those materials can not be recycled. Recycling Center Workers try to intercept any of the wrong materials before they go into the piles of material headed for recycling sorting. I think weve seen all the iowa fans here. At the uss iowa battleship. There were about 7 thousand people there for all the fun, talked to some of those people. Some stood in line for about two hours just to get on the ship. Its amazing. They stood in line for two hours and then it took two hours to get through it and then an hour sitting in the parking lot. Thats five hours. Yeah they were committing a big chunk of time but it was cool. They had fun. And i had a chance to talk to Marshall Koehn about the chance to kick a game winning field goal in the rose bowl. Its the granddaddy of them all. You kick a game winner here and its something really special. Youd like that chance. Oh yeah, that would be awesome. His leg strength and him being a senior and hes been in the big moments certainly. It doesnt get any bigger than the pittsburgh game after getting iced and nailing it. We feel great about having marshall.
