On december 9th, moodys investors servicic downgraded the citys bond rating. Thats generally seen as a negative reflection of the citys finances and can make it harder for coralville to borrow money the bond rating dropped to the owest rating of Investment Grade on moodys scale. The company rated coralville this way because of its high debt and liabilities. Liabilities include things like ownership of a hotel and performance center. Coralville has about 267Million Dollars in debt. In iowa, only cedar rapids and des moines both much larger cities have more debt. The rating will have little impact on residents. They say they expect to see the city continue to grow. While coralville residents property taxes do help pay off this debt, those property taxes will not increase. No, theyre not, and we have. And we have never missed debt payment, we continue to make those payments, and we dont have any plan to do differently. The city is moving forward with a 7thousand seat arena project in the iowa river landing. The city says that project will open debtfree, if it gets to that point. Cedar rapids and Linn County Public Health might have to give back some federal grant money. Its part of a program to remove lead paint from older homes. Thats right. In august 2013, the two groups received two point two Million Dollars to address leadbased in older homes in cedar rapids. Theyve handled the problem in 20 homes since that time, but theres enough money left for another 125 homes. People have to qualify financially and have children either living in the home or visiting often. And the grant money would pay for contractors to fix the problem. Children with lead paint exposure can suffer Serious Health problems, like learning disabilities or impaired hearing. 13 56 04 we want to take care of all the people we can. We have a goal of 125 units to complete and we really want to get the wororout to people that the money is available. And its a short amount of time left before the program time runs out. The city needs to start the projects by july 31st or else it has to return the money to the Us Department of housing and urban development. Homeowners who qualify get 100percent of the work paid for. They call the Initiative Ban the box. It refers to the box on applications that asas if youre a convicted felon. Members of the Human Rights Commission asked the Dubuque City Council to discuss that initiative. The council talked about it at yesterdays meeting, but the commission isnt asking the city to change a law or ordinance. It says it just wants a discussion. The Commission Says it can be next to impossible for a convicted felon to find a job after prison. They will be able to let thehe employers know, yeah i have a criminal background but this is opposed to checking the box and the employer says nope, even if they may be qualified. The Dubuque Area Chamber of commerce says the change could could cause safety concerns for employers. The city of dubuque itself has removed the convicted felon question from its job plications. She reached out to the Salvation Army, and they were first kettle. Its on the counter top at sams main street market. Salvation Army Development director isha smith says this gives residents of smaller communities a chance to donate without leaving their town. One of the goals for the Salvation Army of Johnson County is to get out into the smaller communities with r services, and one way to open that door up is to introduce our kettles in on the e counter toppevel, and then eventually we can get enough volunteer support that we can do a stand kettle in the community.
