Portland police say demonstrators broke windows of businesses and started a Dumpster Fire downtown. Police in los angeles arrested more than two dozen protesters. Demonstrators were also out in new york, colorado and texas. The antitrump protest also spread to minneapolis where protesters blocked interstate 94. The protests blocked traffic in both directions on the interstate last night. Demonstrators marched from an antid minnesota yesterday. It was the second night of protests in the twin cities over trumps election as president. Antitrump protesters also staged a demonstratio n in st. Paul. Its under a recall because the machine could break apart. Samsung issued a voluntary recall of nearly three million top load washers made between march 2011 and now. Everyone was wearing their seat belts and only had minor injuries. Investigators say a driver from indiana tried to cross highway 151 into springville when he hit another pickup. The Linn County Sheriffs Office is continuing to investigate the crash. The highway 965 bridge over the iowa river in Johnson County will be open for this mornings thats three weeks ahead of schedule. Contractors may need to do touchup work that could force one lane to close during the day. The bridge has been closed since september after engineers found structural issues earlier this year. The Iowa Supreme Court is siding with a Lower Court Ruling that governor branstad had the authority to close 2 Mental Health facilities in the state. The court said governor branstad acted within his authority when he vetoed funding for the centers in Mount Pleasant the president of the largest state employees union had sued branstad over the matter. They argued state law limited the governors ability to line item veto funding that lawmakers had approved. Branstad said the facilities were not suited for modern Mental Health care. The state says its concerned about the increasing abuse of opioids and other drugs. That includes carfentanil, a drug used to tranquilize elephants and its showing up in iowa. Robins has already passed two readings for a similar ordinance. A third reading is flash flood victims in dubuque will soon get some financial help to protect their homes from high waters. The Us Department of housing and urban development is giving dubuque more than 30 Million Dollars for flood protection. Flash flooding like this during heavy rainfall often causes damage to homes in downtown dubuque. More than 8 Million Dollars of that grant will pay for things like, replacing basement windows, putting in a sump pump, and fixing cracks in the foundation. The city says it plans to spend between 15 and 18 thousand dollars on each homeowners. I hope we do get grants ya know, or something to take out that. There is a record breaking crop coming out of iowas fields and that requires a lot of storage. What local bins are doing to accommodate the surplus, next in todays agribusiness report. But right now, heres a look at todays opening farm markets. Good morning its. There is a record breaking crop coming off the fields. And that means. There has to be a lot of storage. In marion county. Harvest started off in the last week of september. Now theres just a bit of beans and less than 10 percent of corn still in the challenge for the industry to get everything put away. From what ive heard from across the state, i think everybodys worked hard to try and get that done and maybe have done some things that you wouldnt consider normal. Tracy gathman says corn has been off the charts in marion county. And thats after a great year. Last year. And wed never probably see that again. Years been as good if not better than last year. At the two rivers coop in tracy iowa. Gathman says its been a struggle navigating storage. Were over full, we got about 600,000 bushel of corn on the ground at our otly location. We got about 800,000 bushel of grain that weve moved to off site locations for storage. And at this point in harvest, were taking the tail end of it and moving it right into the grain flow, in the cargill eddyvi lle crop put away. Putting crop on the ground is not optimal. Corn has the potential to warm up in the middle of the pile. The moisture and heat causes the grain to rot. We prefer not to put any on the ground if we can help it, but weve also got to be able to take the crop. And few dramatic measures. The quarterly grains stocks report had on farm storage up six percent. Thats another problem as farmers are swapping out old crop for new. Were seeing some bins that from what we can tell were probably full from last year, yet coming into this year. Because were seeing some people bring crop into town during harvest that weve not past. Gathman adds. With farm bins filling up at the tail end of harvest. Theyre looking to expand the number of bins they have. A new administration in january will cause reorganizing at the cabinet and subcabinet posts. While Congress Also reorganizes. That will impact the timing of the next farm bill. According to iowa senator chuck grassley. It takes months to get the new administration to settle into office. Grassley says that would mean there wont be a farm bill in 2017. But he thinks working together. The agriculture committees should be formed quickly in a bipartisan way. Because farmers need an early bill. If the price of corn was near the cost of production, i wouldnt be saying this but i think we need to do a 2017 farm bill instead of a 2018 farm bill and preserve crop insurance. Today is veterans day, a day when america honors all men and women whove served. Some veterans struggle after leaving the military and too many end up homeless. In eastern iowa, the hawkeye mission to help Homeless Veterans with a different approach. Kcrgtv9s bruce aune explains Operation Home. We send our military men and women off to fight in foreign lands, hoping theyll come home with tales of the opposite. After some complications from an ied attack that we had, i was progressively military enlistment included a tour in afghanistan. And his return to civilian life two years ago was not what he planned. Its kind of hard to relate to that. It wasnt like it was before. I wasnt the same person. This time, he was homeless. The situation was different for henry frank. He served in the army more than 30 years ago. When i went in i did my tour at ft. Stuart, georgia. I stayed there pretty much the whole time, even though we d never saw combat, but his life changed dramatically a couple of years ago when financial problems left him with no home, no money, and no prospects. You show obvious signs of being homeless, its very difficult to get a job. Hacap says 40 per cent of iowas homeless are veterans and their families. Thats a startling statistic that hacaps Operation Home strives to eliminate. The whole sole purpose of the helping veterans who are literally homeless. And these are the folks youll find under bridges, sleeping on benches, and we find a lot of folks sleeping in their car many are even harder to locate. Were sleeping on our friends couch. Were sleeping in a garage. Some of us that are in close groups go on what we call camping trips. and theyre just going from place to place to place. And its hard to track them. And its not always easy to convince Homeless Veterans that help is available. Sometime your pride gets in the way, especially if youve never asked for help before. Thatd be the thing. Youve things, then all of a sudden you have to ask for help. Yes, thats hard. If we find someone whos out on the street and resistant to any type of services, our case workers and our outreach workers go back, and they go back, and they go back and begin to form a relationship with that person. And theyre no longer seen as a threat, but a possible source of help. Help for problems than can include sutcabuse,money man mental issues, and much more. Dealing with those is important, but Operation Homes priority is housing. 0;02 we operate under the philosophy that we get em the house first, and then we wrap the services serving about 200 Homeless Veterans in eastern iowa each year. A year later about 80 per cent of the folks that we serve are still in permanent housing, which is really a great number, and, i think, a testament that this approach does work. I really cant thank them enough, because i never really had to go through this before. This was a first time issue for me, going to a shelter like that, and saying i really needed the help. And for it to turn out eay it did, it was great. U aun. Held its First Community gala in cedar rapids last night. Tv9s bruce aune served as the mc for the event thats also a fundraiser for Operation Home and its goal of ending homelessness among veterans. New faa rules that make it easier for people to operate drones also helps the Iowa National guard. The 28member guard platoon based in boone is in charge of this shadow tactical unmanned aircraft. Now, they can practice in airspace for training. The army uses it for communication and to help missiles find their targets. Were not out there spying on anybody, were just out there doing our thing, doing our training and keeping our pilots proficient. The guard wants to transfer 10 black hawk helicopters and the hundreds of personnel assigned to them to the des moines airport within the next two to three years. However, the head of the platoon operating the three drones stationed in boone says the drones cedar rapids city leaders say some new technology is making it safer to cross streets. This is the pedestrian hybrid beacon. The newest one is along 42nd street ne at marilyn drive outside of pierce elementary, where there is lots of foot traffic when school lets out. Construction on the new 360 Million Dollar building began of iowa Officials Say the mission of the facility is to improve the health and wellbeing of children and their families.
