Firefighters in cedar rapids are trying to figure out what caused a mobile home fire. One person is dead and another was taken to the hospital. The fire was at 3701 16th avenue sw. 72 year old Ronald Jacobs died at the scene. Responders took his wife, 72 year old karen jacobs, to Mercy Medical center before transferring her to another hospital. Smoke and flames had filled the mobile home when firereghters arrived just after 7 30 am yesterday morning. But the fire never got large enough to threaten any nearby mobile homes. One long time resident at the Mobile Home Park says the jacobs couple had lived there for issues, which may have slowed them down if they were trying to escape. He was on oxygen, and he liked to cook in the mornings, cook breakfast and stuff like that. But i dont know what happened or whatever. One battalion chief said he does not know if the oxygen tanks they found inside the mobile home played any role in the fire. In a tv9 followup this morning. Authorities are investigating a house fire in North English where firefighters found a mans body. Firefighters arrived at 208 south h hhland street around 8 30 sunday night. But they didnt find the body of 25 year old Austin Watson until the fire was out. The state medical Examiners Office will perform an autopsy. Investigators believe a fatal fire in waterloo last friday night was not suspicious. Firefighters pulled 53 year old Ray Anthony Reed from his burning apartment at 1684 mount carmel drive. He later died in the hospital. President obama will be picking a new justice for the Supreme Court after antonin and a federal Appeals Court judge and former u. S. Attorney in cedar rapids could be up for consideration. Justice scalias death set off a debate about whether president obama should nominate someone to fill the seat during an election year. Republican Senate Leaders s y the next president should nominate someone when he or she comes into office in january. President obama says he does plan to nominate a replacement. Iowa Governor Terry branstad announced the state has 1 point 9 Million Dollars to cover the cost of the study. Beginning in 2017, iowa school be requirededo provide Summer Reading programs to students who are still struggling to read at the end of third grade. The pilot study will happen this summer, and will inform next summers reing program. This is a pilot. A study program, that with a cohort, a group of School Districts across the state, that will be able to kind of test run high quality reading programs that School Districts will then be able to implement in the summer of 2017. Branstad said private gifts covered one point three Million Dollars needed to implement the study. The rest of the money came from the Iowa Department of education and the iowa board of regents. There were allegations the consultant. Edwin javius , misrepresente d his credentials to other districts in the past. Javius is the ceo of f Consulting Company called, ed equity, out of san jose, california. The district says he worked alongside a Diversity Committee to create the equity action plan. It went into effect in 2015. Some events like this Community Forum in january are part it. The program monitors the progress of targeted student groups including african american, latino and special educaaon students. Despite the recent termination, the district says plans are in motion to continue making progress. Hiring the consultant our plan was kind of a gradual release to coach our manager of student equity to a place where he felt comfortable taking that work and moving it forward and i think he has had opportunities to do that. Nonothat manager of student equity will take over work on the plan in the district. The district says it will look at school needs to determine if another consultant is needed in the future. But its not currently considering that route. The next step in an investigation that found asbestos in a Cedar Rapids High School will be decided today. The Environmental Protection commission will meet today. The commission could decide to send the case to the Attorney Generals Office for enforcement. Both the cedar rapids School District and the company it hired to clean up asbestos, abatement specialties, will be allowed to comment during that meeting. The investigation found there was uncontained asbestst at Washington High School last year. The district says renovation work was taking place in the area but students and staff did not have the strict says it cleaned the area where it found asbestos and tested the air when the work was done. Bills in the Iowa Legislature have until the end of the week to make it out committee. This friday is the first funnel, which meananthe bill will die if it doesnt pass committee. It happened around noon in the westbound lanes of interstate 80 Near West Branch on sunday. Two semi drivers and anonoer person were hurt. One is still in serious condition. The state patrol says one semi driver had to get stitches after the cab detatched and slid. A second semi driver was pinned in his cab for an semi. Five allegations of sexual offenses.
