With just a wave of a hand, Brain Surgeons can get some help in the opeting room. Thats all thanks a pair of university of iowa undergraduate students. Live in the newsroom this morning. Forrest, what did these students do to help surgeons . They built a robot. Three ui students coded and assembled the thing for a senior project. Take a look. Currently, doctors often use microscopes to do brain surgery. They have to spend up to ten hours looking into the device, often hunched over. The robot replaces all that. It uses cameras to lock on to an area of the brain, like a tumor. Video is sent back to a headset, which the surgeon can wear. The doctor can even use a special hands free controller to move the camera. Though the robot is a prototype, creators have high hopes for the future. Were happy with our result. T, i think that in the future, new technology is coming out all the time, i think theyll be able to modify or change Little Things about this and make it even students s t the idea from a university of iowa hospitals and clinics physician. The robot turned out so well, the University Says patents have been filed on the prototype. If youre a big gameme you may have noticed that headset the robot uses is actually designed for gaming. Starting next school year, students who dont read at grade level may have to repeat 3rd grade. Its because of iowas new reading and retention law, which lawmakers passed in 2012. Last school year, more than 1 5 of iowa 3rd graders failed a standardized test in reading. So lawmakers decided to address the problem by requiring any 3rd grader deemed substantially deficient in reading to attend a Summer Program or repeat 3rd grade. The law goes into effect next school year. So the first class of students it will impact is in 2nd grade now. Cedar rapids schools started working on ways to improve reading a year ago last fall. 2nd graders had recess time cut just a bit so they could spend more time on reading. The district conducts testing 3 times a year for reading proficiency. A score at the substantial deficiency level will result in a letter to parents. Schools wifl create an intervention plan both for parents and for the teacher to use in the classroom. 24 of 3rd graders in cedar rapids were listed as deficient last year but administrators believe that number is dropping. We saw good results from fall to spring that our kids did make nice growth so i anticipate that 24 percent of third graders not proficiency last spring will be lower this spring. 3rd graders who dont meet the reading standards in spring of 2017 can stay with their class if they take part in a Summer School reading program. About 45 Iowa National guard soldiers are back home after helping provide clean water to flood victims in missouri. They returned yesterday from high ridge, which is about 30 miles southwest of st. Louis. The guard members helped purify Drinking Water after extensive flooding contaminated the Water Treatment plant there. The board decided to build a new library after damaged the previous building. The chchdrens reading area and new fire place are now finished. City leaders in marion are criticizing a deal the Cedar Rapids City Council made to keep a business from moving to marion. Last month, it approved a 506,000 tax break for equipment manufacturin g company, terex. That helped the company pay lower rent and buy Office Furniture as a new tenant in the Fountains Development in northeast cedar rapids. The company says without the moved its 50 jobs out of cedar rapids into marion. This is video of the old location. At the time of the vote, cedar rapids mayor ron corbett said he didnt want marion and hiawatha to continue luring away businesses with tax incentives. Marions city manager said the city wasnt planning to give terex any tax incentive. And marions Economic Development corporation called the tax break a dangerous precedent. The National Labor Relations Board says it has found enough evidence to issue a complaint against penfords parent company, ingredion. The board says the Company Violated Federal Law in its contract negotiations with the union at the cedar rapids plant. The labor board has offered ingredion a settlement, and is now waiting for the company to respond. More than 150 Union Members voted in august to reject ingredions last contract offer. Theyre still working towards a new contract. The Salvation Army in Johnson County is now providing a daytime shelter for those who are homeless. Though its jt a prototype, it could be the cutting edge when it comes to being under the knife. If you havent t en the new star wars film, this droid cool robot, even if hes science fiction. We thought getting it to move would be like the easiest part. But, it was pretty tough. This one isnt, though. Youre looking at the creation of three ui Computer Engineering students. They built this bot for a senior prect. The idea came from an ui doctor who said for years Brain Surgeons have faced a major annoyance in theer. They use these big microscopes. They have these head pieces up here. When theyre looking at the brain, they have to strain their neck and look through it. Sometimes docs have to do that for up to ten hours. Plus, surgeons have to try not to look away, for fear it would change what theyre viewing. This was definitely something that was needed. Theyre using very, very old microscopes. The robot is designed to replace all that. Its got cameras that can track specific spots in the brain, like a tumor for example. The images are sent up into a headset, which the surgeon can wear, meaning the doctor can move his or her head and not worry about losing what is being looking at. Ct scans or mri images can be placed on top of the camera feed. And, heres the other cool thing, a hands free controller which allows the doc to adjust the bot without touching it. They dont have to take their gloves off to move the robot around. Its all in the computer. These guys together and wrote the computer code in a its complete the prototype is good enough that patents have been filed. No longer science fiction. This droid is science ive never heard of anything like this being done before. Hopefully it helppeople in the future.
