Reporter hello, and welcome xfinity monday live, hanging out at the viewhouse centennial on a Peyton Manning retirement monday. Were excited to have Mark Schlereth joining us here tonight to recap what went down at broncos headquarters today between the two of us we have three super bowl rings, we are qualified to talk about what happened. Absolutely. I thought it went really well, peyton, had jokes, he had emotional. What was your impression from the day . Well, i mean, i think number one, all the people that gathered together at the broncos facility to watch, and to honor Peyton Manning, and then the reverence with which he addresses the football perspective of his life and how important the game is to him, and how important it is to do the things right, and thats really what resonated with me today. Is this is a guy who has dedicated himself as a father and a husband, but on the football field to his craft, and to what he wants to accomplish, himself to be the best he can possibly be, and hes been the best for the last 18 years. Been amazing. The ride hes taken us all on from the indianapolis days to the broncos days as it comes to close. Had Great Stories from when he first entered the nfl. He didnt talk a lot about his numbers and his accomplishments r but were going to mention those. The coors light cold hard facts, Peyton Manning retires with so many records, most passing yards both the season and the career, most passing touchdowns for a season and a career. And total wins, 200 and five mvps, you know, quite the resume to calf off a career. Db cap off a career. I look back on my nfl kreeshgs ill know without a doubt that i gave everything i could to the players who were more talented, but there was no one who could outprepare me. And because of that, i have no regrets. Theres a scripture reading, second timothy 4 7, i have fought the good fight and the faith. Well, i fought a good fight. I have finished my football race. And after 18 years, its time. We mentioned his records, is there one to you that stands out that defines Peyton Mannings career . Well, not one that we mentioned there, but think about this, now. 18 year career. He missed the 2011 season because of the neck injury and the surgeries. So that makes a 17year career where he played, he went to the playoffs 15 times as a starting quarterback. He didnt make it his rookie year, in 2002, he didnt make it. Other than that, he went to the playoffs, every year. And an incredible accomplishment to drive your team and to be the leader of that Football Team like he was, and to have the kind of football that he had to be able to have the presence to drive that team to the playoffs. He gets knocked a little bit for his postseason record, but he finishes with a 1413 overall record. Two super bowls and obviously, one the final game. Now is the right time to step away. Absolutely, what you saw was you saw a guy that had to essentially take a step back, compared to what he was, he was always the alpha male, the guy in charge, he was always the guy at the line of scrimmage, running hiss of, and it got to the point where father time did its damage to Peyton Manning. And he no longer could be that guy. And to be able to step back from that and realize, you know what, ive got a great enough team around me, and im going to go ahead, on third down and hand the ball off. Im going to do those things because i know thats going to give us the best opportunity to win, when your whole career, youve been the best opportunity to win and you can no longer do those things, thats the time when you have to be honest with yourself and say, it is time to move on, thats what he was able to do today. Win thing i enjoyed one he loved playing football and he loved being part of a team. Theres no question about that. And i think thats one thing that when you talk too guys, theyll all tell you he was so focused on his teammates, even though they drove thim hard. It was the teammates that he focused on the and relationships that hes built. And one thing that resonates with me with Peyton Manning during his course here as a denver broncos, to have the season he had, to be fulled with fr a game in kansas city, to struggle with the injury, come back, to agree to be the backup to Brock Osweiler week 17. Youre sitting there in a divisional playoff game, against the pittsburgh steelers, and you take the kneel down, you win the game 2316. Can you have the where with all, to take that kneel down, and then go hand the ball to demaryius thomas, whose mother had just been released from prison, whose never seen him game ball for your mom tochlt be thinking about that because youre so myopic in you player, to be able to think about your teammates na that situation, i dont have that where with all. I dont have that in me. I was so, you know, singularly focused on what a had to do, i wouldnt have been thinking beyond that. Goes to show you the kind of teammate Peyton Manning is, and he doesnt get enough credit for those things. Teammates. Reporter and welcome back to xfinity monday live. The experience winner and you could be next. They get autographed things, and all the great things at the viewhouse, it is all from coors light. Welcome back to xfinity monday live, hanging out with Mark Schlereth tonight. That was the big story today, week, and we knew that Peyton Manning wasnt coming back, whether he got cut or retired. But what are they going to do at quarterback, do you think brock. I think so, i think he will effort. I think the thing that brock needs to understand is youve got a defense thats caneable of you games. Quarterback window yet. Its about the next contract, and so if you go somewhere, for a little bit more money and youre winning 6, 7, 8 games a year, the next contract is not going to be what this next contract will be, if you sign with the broncos and you win 11, 12 games, going to the playoffs. So thats the one thing you really have to look at, and im not a believer in the home down discount so to speak, but in this case, i think it really makes sense for brock to stay on the team that hes familiar with, and a defense that you know can win you ten games. A lot of free agents on this management staff could do. Talk about the offensive line, mac, tore them apart. But the time they got the super bowl, things were getting a little bit better, they were at least serviceable. What do you see them doing with year . Theyll be four new starters across the board on the offensive line. Thi got to tear it apart theyve got to tear it apart. Both tackle positions have to be thats honesty and they did. Coaching staff did a great job positions is to win. Giving them a lot of short set type of quick throw stuff. So they could win, and be aggressive at the line of scrimmage. But they are to upgrade that position. Especially with a young quarterback like brock. The defense, one of the al huff time best, we know vonn miller will be back, malik is the question mark. I dont know if youll be that good, the run you had during the super bowl, but i think that they can still be outstanding. Youre going to lose free the next man up philosophy. They are so solid at all three levels the linebacker level and this is a team that can have the dominant, dominant defense, and still play exceptionally well, but they have to get better on the offensive side of the ball. One player other than vonn back, who would it be. Brock. More with Mark Schlereth coming up. For now, back to the cbs4 news studios, karen leigh. Well, its been a few weeks since the rock slide badly damaged i70 in Glenwood Canyon ,,,,, new details on the damage kazed by a fire in caused by a fire in lakewood. Big thankyou to all of you who made the girls in science event this weekend a huge success. We had more than 11,000 people check out the clubhouses at the denver museum, of nature and science. Girls got to try out the green screen, make rain gauges and can cloud finders. Most of the girls we met loved math and science. Some how, late Elementary School into middle school, we lose them. The event is also a reminder to parents to encourage your girls to pursue their interests. Right now, lets get in with greene for the forecast. We had something for everybody today, with snow, rain, thunderstorms, and sunshine, this morning. Look at doppler 4,000, and you can see this moisture that we had, that came through the metro area, has now kind of moved into nebraska and wyoming, still snow and even some thunderstorms up there. But 55 is our high today. 56. Before 9 00, then the front came through. Tonights low also be in the 20s and 30s over the eastern plains. Single digits and teens for the high country. What quarterback do you think they should go after if they cant get brock . Its a great question, theres not a whole lot left after brock. Its amazing, obviously, if its patrick, hes going to resign because he had so much success. R. G. 3 will become available, maybe its Colin Kaepernick. But brock is, when you look at the free agent quarterbacks out there, hes probably your number one choice, chase daniels is going to be a free agent from the kansas city chiefs, maybe its that. But its pretty slim pickings when you talk about free agent. Do you think Colin Kaepernick would fit . They could make him fit, but theyre going to understand what they can and kand do.
