Time for a variety of crimes, including auto theft. He was in the same prison as the aurora theater shooting mass killer james holmes, and their paths crossed. At the Colorado State penitentiary in canyon city, special attention was made to keep the theater gunman apart from the other prisoners. By chance, james holmes and mark daniels came facetoface last october after a guards radio battery died. In a letter to cbs 4, daniels asked us to contact his father who would speak for him. I asked about the allegation that guards were in on the attack. I would have to say they would have had to turn the cheek for a couple minutes for him to get a hold of him. Reporter documents we obtained say daniels punched holmes on the back and on the top of his head. Daniels responded this is your fault, you control the doors, i dont. But the director of prisons told no truth to daniels claims of i would say its an allegation that offender daniels actions. Reporter daniels has now been moved to the state prison facility at sterling where he is on 23hour a day lockdown. As for holmes, he was quietly moved out of state. We talked with the District Attorney who prosecuted holmes. He feels the doc should be protecting its inmates and says holmes should be in colorado. A 14yearold girl who survived a mass shooting in michigan is making a remarkable recovery. Abigail opened her eyes and took a few steps at the hospital this week. Crystal died from massive internal bleeding. My child got turned into a human safety device. An airbag. She saved my life. It wasnt this is the seat that was involved in the accident. Yes, the right front seat that mom was in. Reporter when we spoke to a Structural Engineer and accident investigator in 2002, he told us the federal safety standard for seat back strength was grossly inadequate. And 14 years later . Nothings changed. Reporter he provides expert testimony in lawsuits against carmakers and says car seats exceed the federal standard and are generally stronger than they were in 2002. But theyre not reliably stronger all the time. Sometimes they could be adjusted and become weaker. Reporter but there are steps you can take to help protect the kids in the backseat. And theyre very simple. If theres no one in the passenger seat, then put the child behind the empty seat. If someone is in the passengers seat, put them behind the lightest, shortest person. And that will give kids a better chance of surviving a rear end collision. The national Highway Traffic Safety Administration responded to our story with this rear impact crashes account for roughly 3 of all traffic fatalities. The agency is required to perform cost benefit analysis to demonstrate net benefits for any regulatory change.
