The president s visit just wrapping up, and as you might imagine, the focus was as much on Climate Change as on the wildfires themselves. Just before sitting down for a briefing with emergency officials, you double down on the role that he things poor for his management played. Pushing back at the idea that soaring temperatures may play an even bigger role. Here is that exchange. That is going to be key. If we ignore that science and put her head in the sand and think its all about management, we are not going to succeed together to protect california. It will start getting cooler. You just watch. I wish science agreed with you. Everyone thinks science kno knows. Governor gavin newsom things that present for pledging federal health and what he calls a record time and agrees that more needs to be done to clear away dry brush and that she is, but he took the president to task on Climate Change. There is commonality on vegetation, forest management, but please respect, and i know you do, the difference of opinions out here as it relates to this fundamental issue on the issue of Climate Change. Absolutely. The president also took time out to honor members on californias National Guard, conducting a daring rescue, airlifting more than 200 campers this evening after they became trapped by a fastmoving fire near fresno. The present awarding that distinguished a word to them he is now on his way to our roundtable event was latino supporters in phoenix. Sandra heroes indeed. Joe biden meanwhile hitting the president hard on those wildfires, saying that the science is clear that Climate Change is posing an imminent existential threat to our way of life. Jacqui heinrich is with us for more on that. Good afternoon, sandra. The biden slammed President Trump for lack of Decisive Action on Climate Change, calling him a pliant denier. He warned without action on this issue, these catastrophic events will become more deadly, more common, more frequent. Biden said bidens partisan response puts the country at risk, referencing reports that he tried to withhold aid to california because voters there dont support him politically as well as his comments over the weekend, partially blaming local officials where the fires. Biden painted the president s position as dangerous and familiar to people who have been affected before, mentioning puerto rico is still recovering from Hurricane Maria four years ago. This is the same president who through paper towels on the people in puerto rico instead of truly helping them recover and rebuild. To give a climate arsonist four more years in the white house, why would anyone be surprised we have for america ablaze . How these crazies have disproportionately affected people of color. Biden touted his own climate plan, pushing back on the attack that it would kill jobs, saying his plan would actually put more americans back to work by building modern systems and also by rejoining the parents climate accord. He said that trump ignores facts and denies reality, and in the end, he repurposed the line of attack, saying its clear that people arent safe and Donald Trumps america. Sandra. Sandra we will have more on that in just a moment. My next guest has been dealing with these deadly fires. Represented today at the president s meeting. He joins us now by phone. Your team met with the president s team. A lot has changed in the last 24 hours. What update can you give us there from the ground this morning . I can tell you well we have had several days of making good progress, today, the winds are picking up, and we have seen fire activity increase on a number of friends. They have been making real good progress, so we hope it will help hold back. Many of our larger areas have now taken off, ready to fight those fires. Sandra you and i spoke earlier this morning. A lot has changed since then. You talk about the heroic efforts that you are seeing on the ground to fight these fires and in the air, i should add. Tell us about how those crews are doing this afternoon. Many have been battling for weeks in a row. Many of them for well over a month, and so they are responding fire to fire. You know, we are doing our best to give them an opportunity to get a break, but this is been a really long firefighters. Sandra . Sandra something i wasnt able to ask you this morning about the growing debate that you heard with the president s visit there, over what causes these fires, what exacerbates these fires. Obviously, there is debate over Climate Change versus land management. What can you add to that conversation, daniel . In california, there really is no debate that our fire seasons are getting longer. We are seeing larger fires and more explosive fires. In fact on average right now, our fire season is 75 days longer than they were just four decades ago, and so, you know, we can debate all we want, but i can tell you here on the ground, we are seeing fires that are incredibly destructive and incredibly fast moving. Sandra that is a huge thought to the communities and the people of these areas. You are doing a lot of work there on the ground to keep people safe. We appreciate your time. Thank you. Thanks. Sandra our next this is Climate Change has made it more imperative to manage our fores forests. He joins us now. Im extremely interested in what you have to say, especially after hearing from the president and his team on the ground there this afternoon. What needs to be done . Sandra, first, i want to say my heart goes out to all those residents on the west coast. Ive got friends there that said the air conditions worse than they have ever seen. We are seeing millions of acres of land to go up and a big thank you to those that are fighting these fires. But the bottom line is it doesnt have to be this way. We can debate about what the causes. The climate conditions are changing. Weve got more carbon in the atmosphere. They are about one tool we have to pull that carbon out of the atmosphere and to reverse the effects of added carbon, but also, weve been mismanaging these fours for decades, and its going to take time to get them back into the condition where they are not as subject to intense fires, not as rapidly occurring fires, and we can mitigate the damages if a way just apply sound scientific management. Sandra you talk a lot about having to take these trees down but then putting them to use. You put a lot of thought into using those trees in green infrastructure, sort of to get over the controversy in the debate around this so that we can stop these fires from happening. Explain how you would make that work and really appease both sides in this. Its really a winwin situation. I appreciate you pointing that out. The trimming trees act, which President Trump supports would look at planting more trees in areas where we can but also keeping the trees in the force that we have healthy and finding markets where you are using a lot of wide and building it actually stores carbon. It would be good for rural economies, and what we need to do with the fours that are there to make them healthy, thats the biggest impact we can have to avoid these catastrophic fires. There are four areas we need to target. And this is an wildland urban interface, transportation corridors, transmission corridors. We need to do an all out effort. I am not talking clear cutting. I am talking getting the trees where they are spaced out so that when you have a fire, you can put it up quickly, and youre not destroying the canopy like we saw where that fire was actually put out when it got to break sandra i have 20 seconds left. What do you say to those who say that you are oversimplifying it with that solution . Joe biden is really putting the focus on Climate Change. We can talk about Climate Change, but the most pragmatic thing we can do is forest management. We know the Science Behind it. We know how to make it work, and its a crying shame that we are not doing it right now. Sandra hopes for a new Coronavirus Vaccine. The dow up over 300 points tod today. Sandra to Los Angeles Los angeles county sheriffs deputies expected to survive after a gunman ambush them while they were sitting in their patrol car. Now, the manhunt is on for the attacker. William la jeunesse has the latest on all of that. Police will not say this publicly, but some believe it is a retaliation for some Reason Police shootings of black suspects in l. A. They are in stable condition. Doctors say both will survive. The photo you are about to see here is kind of graphic. It shows the injured deputies covered in blood. One, 30yearold mother, shot on the job. Her partner, a male officer. She reportedly applied a tourniquet to stop his bleeding. They survived, and i think at the end of the day, they were very, very fortunate, considering how many times they were shot. They can actually walk away, its just incredible. Police name to 100,000 reward for the suspect, blackmail, 20 to 30 years old. Surveillance video shows him firing multiple times through the window, then escapes with an accomplice in a mercedes. Now, this, hours later appeared both deputies are in surgery when protesters shout at the hospital i hope you die, carrying a panamerican flag, taunting officers by yelling pigs and youre next. Then a counter protest. Police supporters decorating their cars with blue and black balloons. We just need to let them know that not everyone is against them. We keep them in our prayers and hope that they make it. So the Surveillance Video that weve been watching all day was shot with a fisheye lens, so it is distorted. Police are looking at surrounding cameras. Back to you. Sandra william la jeunesse, thank you for your joining us now with his thoughts on all of this, thank you for being here this afternoon, sir. Still, as many times as i have seen it, so incredibly difficult to watch the video footage of those two shares deputies sitting in their patrol car and what happens then. How did you react when you first saw that . Just like everybody else, im horrified. Some people get pleasure out of it, as we saw in the report. Its just getting to a point where its totally ridiculous. These are not protesters. These are anarchist. They are out there for one purpose, to disrupt any form of life as we know it right now. By the grace of god that they are here today because the same thing happened to those officers in brooklyn, and they were not so fortunate. This will continue as long as we have anarchist roaming the streets. Sandra both of them were just sworn into the force 14 months ago. According to the sheriff. They are still fighting for their lives. They are listed in stable condition now. Our prayers and thoughts are with them and their families, of course. Meanwhile, the hunt is on. A 100,000 reward for anything that will lead to the arrest of this person when they find him or her. Rest assured, they will find them. Then accomplice as well. Lets keep in mind that their injuries are severe, and they might be career ending. It could be a lifelong injuries. Mental injuries as well. These individuals, they will be found. We dont even know what the fullest extent of the lies anymore. Sandra you listen to the please, the emotion i was coming from the department as they were able to respond to this, talking about that cowardly acts that this was, talking about how young these officers were and how they stepped into help each other. The 31yearold mother, she was willing to help her partner. You know how your team members step into help, but then you see what happened with these protests as they were receiving surgery. You saw it on the cover of the New York Post this morning. We hope you die. Thankfully there were counter protest later that showed support for the police, but what did you think when you saw those protesters outside of the hospital . Its truly disgusting. First of all, they shouldnt be allowed near the hospitals. Hospitals, churches, police stations, government buildings. They should be kept away, and they should be prosecuted for violating a certain perimeter. They want to cause disruption to the hospital. Not only the Police Officers they have other patients coming in and out. They should be arrested. They should truly be arrested and prosecuted, but once again, in this day and age, everybody is allowed to do whatever they want under the guise of protesting. This is not protesting. This is anarchy. It is going to continue. Sandra i would go furthermore into the sheriffs words, talking about how dangerous this job is for our men and women and blue. Talking about the actions and words. They have consequences. He went on to say our job does not get any easier because people do not like law enforcement. It makes him angry. It just made me at the same time. There is no pretty way to save. Talk about the morale right now, joe, for the police department. For the ability to recruit Police Officers, what the future looks like for our men and women in blue. You know what, sandra . Ive been with fox for 18 years now doing these types of stories, and ive never seen it as bad as it is right now. This is a mass exodus from the police department. You dont have the senior Police Officers conveying to the younger officers what they should expect, how to train them and everything peered across the united states, its very hard to be a Police Officer right now. Yes they get up every day, put that uniform on, do the best that they can under the worst conditions. Especially in new york and l. A. And portland. We have no support whatsoever from the government. The local government, i should say. We dont have support from local government. Its amazing that in one place, you can have a merit that is also the police commissioner, so he calls the shots on everything. Its ridiculous. Until we get back to some kind of normalcy, and i dont even know what that is anymore, this is going to continue to happen, and is going to get worse. Sandra we hear the frustration in your words, joe. Thank you for coming on today. Anytime. Sandra just weeks after hurricane laura battered the coast, now Hurricane Sally. It is still strengthening. One more game of backgammon . [ chuckles ] not on your life. [ laughs ] when the lights go down sandra Hurricane Sally gaining strength over the gulf of mexico. With the latest on the slowmoving storm, adam, what can you tell us . Sandra, it is a slowmoving storm, and it still has time to continue to intensify before we got landfall tomorrow or perhaps even wednesday. Currently, windows at 90 miles per hour. Getting to structure across the florida panhandle. That is going to be able to deteriorate over and i fear this forecast. Still has time to jump up to a category two hurricane. Upper level winds are going to grab this and turn it from heading to the west to the northeast. It is going to make a big difference. It could make landfall as early as tomorrow morning. If it turns a little bit sooner, its a slow mover, it could take all the way until wednesday morning before you hit the coast around biloxi. We will be paying attention to this, regardless of when the landfall happens. Still plenty of areas that will be impacted, and weve got all the watches and warnings stretches from the gold coast, getting over towards louisiana and new orleans included. Hardhit areas could be seven to 11 feet of storm surge. Just a wall of water, and it wont just be that. It will also be the rainfall appeared when you get a real slowmoving storm, it is going to slow down even more. That allows a time to just sit overhead and drop a whole lot of rain. We have flood watches across a very long area here. The system will be very slowmoving. Here are some of your rainfall totals. There will be lots of spots. There is going to be some isolated areas, and there is still time for you to move. We could be talking about 2 feet of rain on top of all of that storm surge, so this is going to be a real mass. We are looking at mostly taking place tomorrow, but i will linger into wednesdays forecast as well. Sandra thank you for the update. Meanwhile, mandatory evacuations and parts of new orleans. It leland vitterts there. Leland. Good afternoon to you. New orleans is preparing for direct hit, and if that is the 11 feet that adam talked about, it would be the first real test of the postkatrina levee system. Now the states of emergency from new orleans in the west all the way back eased in mississippi, alabama. The president declaring a state of emergency and of the proposals here for louisiana. The big question for everyone in new orleans tonight is one, if ever, business will return. Welcome to bourbon street in new orleans. During ordinary times, the bars would be opening, the music playing, and good times would be had by all, but these are extraordinary times. Between the coronavirus and backtoback hurricanes, the lifeblood of this town, tourism, is now on life support. Most of the folks you see hear, hear to board up out of the storm. Does not knowing when there is an end in sight. If you had a date where okay, things are going to turn around starting now, you can kind of pace yourselves and be prepared, but its the inconsistency, and its just not knowing that can kind of drive you crazy as a retail owner. Sally is slowing down, as adam mentioned. Talking about a couple of feet of rain, and a town like this, having spent a lot of time in louisiana, you have a town that is 50 below sea level, theres only so much levees and sandbags can do. Sandra 18 storm of the season. That state has gone through a lot already. Leland vittert, thank you for the update there. Mississippi is also in a state of emergency as the coast prepares for a direct hit. Governor, as leland mentioned, people know how to prepare. They know what to expect, or at least, they tried to. What are you telling residents of your state, as we dont necessarily know at this point what the next turn is that sally may make. Well, thanks for having me on, sandra. We in the south and particularly in mississippi, for better or worse, we dealt with hurricanes for many years. Dating back all the way to hurricane camille in the late 1960s and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. What we are talking about right now is that it looks like right now that we are going to get a direct hit from this hurricane. Unfortunately, as many people have said, this thing has slowed down. Typically, when they slow down in the gulf, they take a sharp right turn. It could hit biloxi, mississippi, as early as about dark time tomorrow, and thats something that we are telling our people that if you live in a lowlying area, because no matter where it has landfall, we are going to get significant amounts of rain, and its going to be a major water event, no matter where it has along the gulf. Sandra so thats what youre preparing for. Manage expectations as far as the state of emergency has been declared. What do you do about evacuations and mandatory evacuations . Well, we appreciate President Trump, who just recently approved our state of emergency, and we appreciate the administrations willingness to be very proactive when it comes to these emergency. 20 20 has been on like any year i think any of us have ever seen in terms of the number of things that we have had to go there, but in terms of evacuation, our local government are looking at the mandatory evacuations, particularly in lowlying areas. In fact, we have already open his medical needs shelter that we have built in mississippi, just about 40 miles off of the coastline. For anyone who has special medical needs, we will have that shelter. If you live in a lowlying area, three coastal counties, the time to get out is now. There is no doubt about that. We are going to get as much as 20 to 25 inches of rain in those three coastal counties. Sandra you mentioned the evacuations in the shelters that you are to try to accommodate. Coronavirus and the pandemic has added an entire level of complexity to the hurricane situation, and having been such a brutal season so far, how are the people in your communities faring . What does the economy look like . What kind of hit are you taking . Well, we are having challenges in our states. Remember, sandra, we didnt shut down our economy for the entirety of this coronavirus. We have that most of our economy open. We are continuing to gradually and very intelligently open up more and more of our economy. Just today, in fact, restaurants, for example, from 50 capacity of 275 , which allows him to have more people, and we have opened up schools in our state. We have also seen institutions reopen, and our number of cases are continuing to go down. 9,200 cases over a sevenday period, we are going to have less than 3,000 cases over the last seven days after reporting only 140 cases today, so we are seeing significant progress. We are seeing that across the southeast as well. Sandra governor, our best to you and the people of your stage. Thank you. Thanks, sandra, god bless. Sandra a new study finding joe bidens spending would push washington to its highest level in decades. Will that push voters away . We will discuss, after this. Democratic president ial nominee joseph bidejoe bidens plan cout 5. 4 trillion over the next decade. Hes playing to his base, but how will that play with all the voters . You have to remind yourself just how big that number is. How is that playing with his base versus the general voting public . The numbers now are so big, i think they have become meaningless to folks because its so hard to wrap your head around what does this mean . It means a big problem for our future. I think a lot of people have been hungry for joe biden to say exactly what he is going to be doing, and he has laid it out here. It is going to cost a lot of money. Trying to say why that is not okay. Really important, talking about creating jobs, infrastructure, education. And these issues that are really, really important. Yes, it is going to cost too much, and it is a hard thing to break down because these numbers are so huge. How do you even tell the difference when youre talking about 1 trillion versus 4 trillion. People are hungry for the solutions. Sandra wharton economics advisor is quoted as saying this is the largest proposed spending increase since george mcgovern. Wharton dug into these numbers. This way to federal spending to the 20 oh four of gdp by 2030. He was talking about the biggest federal budget, going back more than a half of a century, according to wharton. You have to wonder how that plays with all voters in this environment. There is no question about it. I think its really scary to folks. People are concerned about the future. They are concerned about their grandchildren. Right now, spending is necessary because we are in many people are saying we are in a recession, but certainly a very difficult time economically, and thats when these big plans are popular and come through. His Campaign Said what he is talking about, 5. 4 trillion package, the plan it is not talking about temporary measures that are going to get us through the moment that we are going through because of covid. Hes talking about longterm spending, and thats really extreme. The other thing that is important is that the democrats have been criticizing trump for his spending, and now they are coming out and going huge amounts over that. They are saying that they are going to pay for it by taxing the wealthy. That is not going to the math doesnt add up. It just doesnt make sense. How are we going to do this for the long term . We cant keep spending. We cant keep giving things away. Someone will have to explain it in a way that we can have what we need without spending too much. Sandra talking to Kayleigh Mcenany last week about it, and i asked her about the deficit, and she said she had just spoken to the president about it and he is going to make that a second term priority. An interesting response to that. I want to transition to the spirit, add this morning. The New York Times reporting on joe bidens legal preparations and how he is not creating a new major legal team in the event that the election is challenged. What does that tell you about what we may see unfold on Election Night . I am so nervous about this. The one thing that we have is trust in the system. The one thing that we have is trust in our democracy at work. That has been lost already. People are preparing for some of the worst reactions that we have ever seen. Saying that we might not have results for weeks after and the unrest i could follow. People have been concerned, are you going to concede if you dont win the night of . We are talking about this is going to make people feel very, very unsure. Very unsafe. They want to make people feel confident that it is going to work. This kind of stuff, i think it should make everybody very nervous. Sandra getting his Campaign Response in there, saying this team, legal team, and Election Protection Program Unlike any before. Great to talk to you this afternoon. Good to see you. Great to see you. Thank you. Sandra looking live now at a new york city food five. New York City Restaurants given the green light, but not all owners are happy, and they are letting the city know about it. What is being served up today . Christina. I have now shifted to Hells Kitchen because all men shape as shifted so dramatical dramatically. Restaurants with their doors closed. There is literally four in a row that have shut their doors. This comes at a time when restaurants have been scraping by four months. Finally got the green line, but many took to city hall this morning to protest. They are not happy with the new restrictions. It means that right now, restaurants can open a 25 capacity. You have to have mandatory temperature checks. You have to provide information for contact tracing. You have to update your filtration system inside your restaurants. You must close at midnight, and bars cannot be open. Asking some of the protesters as to why they are so dissatisfied with the new restrictions. Weve been struggling, holding on by our fingernails for the last six months. Most of these people see, they havent worked in six months. Collectively, no one has come together and said we need to pass the restaurant act, keep these businesses alive. The Restaurant Owners find it unfair that others can open up, but not here. The demands are 50 capacity, full capacity by november. They want bars to reopen, and like many other industries, hoping for some type of federal relief. These demands, as the cdc puts out a new survey of roughly 314, and for those who tested positive, they are twice as likely to have gone any another restaurant indoors. The pressure is on for the industry here in new york that employs over 100,000 people. Sandra. Sandra its has been brutal for some of these restaurants, some of them trying to hang in there still. Meantime, new jersey restaurants have been open at 25 capacity since the beginning of the mon month. How is that working out so far . Lets get to read from the president of the new Jersey Business and industry association. I know you are probably listening to that report in new york where many of those restaurants are hitting up city hall, saying this is not good enough. What has it been like in new jersey to have the doors open for only a quarter capacity . You are talking about a restaurant that can sit 40 people normally, you can sit ten. No, it just doesnt work. Many restaurants remain closed because they didnt have large capacities to begin with, and then complying with an executive order that limited them would be a money losing. New jersey, we have 18. 2 billion restaurant industry, and employing of jobs. 87 were laid off in march, and of that, only 23 have come back to work so far. They cant sustain on 25 . In fact, many tell us that they wont even make a profit at 50 . They really need to be getting back up to 100 . Sandra long island, westchester county, we adapted to the outdoor seating in the summertime. Some of them do quite well. People really enjoy the outdoor added seating capacity, but the weather is turning. It is going to get chillier, and when you look at these restaurants i can only operate at a quarter capacity, they are already starting to stock up on outdoor heaters, anything they can do to keep getting people seated at the restaurant. How much longer can this last . Well, you know, those who are fortunate enough to have Outdoor Dining did perhaps fare better than others. Think about it in cities where you dont have that ability, and we are entering the shoulder season. How many people want to use it outside while they are eating . So, this time is very limited in order to ensure that we can continue to have Outdoor Dining to help support Indoor Dining. We need relief on Indoor Dining. 35 will not reopen and will close by the end of the year. Those are the statistics that should really, really frightened us. Sandra it has been a tough time for the restaurant scene. So many they have been dealing with the fact that staff left to go do something else. If they are told they can open their doors, a lot of the staff has already moved on. Final thoughts . Huge struggle right now is finding employees for these restaurants, absolutely. Sandra best to you and all those trying to survive this. The stimulus stalemate continu continues. The g. O. P. Need to figure it out, he says, to get it done. Max rose joins us live, coming up. Com promo sandra treasure secretary Steve Mnuchin saying there is a deal to be had on the covid19 stimulus and is ready and willing to negotiate with House Speaker nancy pelosi. Our next guest said they need to put fighting aside to fight for the American People. Congressman max rose, what is your message . There is a deal to be had. In order for that to occur two things need to happen. First the Democratic Party has to stop thinking about the next election. They cant say oh look its better if we dont get a deal because then the president looks worse off. Thats fundamentally wrong and unamerican. The Republican Party particularly in the senate can no longer put their head in the sand and think that a skinny bill is okay. Its a good thing we didnt have a skinny plan for the apollo project or to beat the nazis. I have confidence there are members in congress on both sides of the aisle putting the Country First that will come to the table with a robust, bold and sensible plan to beat covid and emerge from the economic and Public Health crisis. Sandra it sounds like negotiations will happen. But, of course, he is receiving criticisms from the Republican Party about moving forward with too much. Looking at a situation that could last many years for the American People. How badly is this stimulus needed . Its absolutely needed. The state and local aid has to be included. Otherwise we will see cops, firemen and nurses and essential workers laidoff across the country. This is not red states versus blue states issue. The president months ago said this is a moment of war. You cant underspend during a war. Its critical that we dedicate all of resources necessary to beat this unprecedented pandemic. Not looking back to decide whose fault it is, but looking forward to figure out how he can emerge stronger than ever. Sandra it sounds like mnuchin is talking about the extraordinary need for this stimulus. This just in Steve Mnuchin and Jerome Powell will testify on september 24th on coronavirus relief. Do you have a response . My hope whether its the treasure secretary or anyone else on both sides of the aisle they put the Country First. Sandra that reminds me of what is happening across the country but particularly in new york. You shared your grievances with the mayor. Final thoughts on mayor bill de blasio and his handling of this. Plain and simple, he is the worst mayor in history of new york city. He has to do his job and stop link to twitter. Sandra congressman max rose, appreciate your time. Thank you very much. And sally is a category two hurricane. Thats it for us. Thanks for joining us.
