Fights back. We hint at fighting back now that near fighting back. We have Fox Team Coverage with susan li. John roberts at the white house on if either side will back down. We begin with susan. The biggest sell off since this the start of the year. China slapping back with 60 billion tariffs on u. S. Goods. U. S. Companies being sold off in the session. That includes boeing with a lot of plane orders, the chinese airlines, caterpillar selling a lot of machinery. 10 to 15 of s p 500 Company Revenues come from china. That is because of the limited access to sell in the chinese market. Also, a reminder today from a big investor that things are still looking good in the United States. I would argue the psychology got too complacent. The fed will never raise rates again. They might lower it. The economy is fine and were going to get the chinese deal. The world is never that simple. The main stock drag if we had to pick one on the markets, apple. China accounts for 20 of apple revenues and a Supreme Court ruling that says that iphone users can bring class action lawsuits against the company for their alleged monopoly on their app store. Apple got back the us and they say theyre not a monopoly and they have a number of platforms to choose from to deliver their soft where from other app stars to smart televisions to gaming consoles. A big sector drop today for the likes of the generic drug maker like teva. State attorney generals accusing them of spiking prices. Neil the nasdaq posted their biggest loss of the year. The s p 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial itself since early january. The president watches the markets closely. Was he watching what transpired today . The read is from those in the Retail Community that follow it very closely, this was bill simon from walmart talking to me saturday. The large retailers in general are in a position to absorb some of it but not all of it. Theyll pass some of it through. The question is how much will they pass through the second round. The next three to four weeks are very critical. Lets go to john roberts at the white house on their read on this. John . You know, you can absorb 5 . When it gets to 20, 25 , its more difficult. You asked at the top, who will blink first. I dont think either side is looking like theyre going to blink. Both sides have their heels dug in. The president in the oval office saying while theres some aggressive negotiations between the two countries, that he believes its all going to work out for the best. He said he didnt have any choice but to increase the tariffs on 200 billion in chinese goods because of what china did of negotiating the new trade diagonal. We had a deal. It was 95 there. My representatives as you know, secretary mnuchin and bob lighthizer, ambassador lighthizer, they went to china and told the things that were fully agreed to were not going to get anymore. Theyre going to unagree to them. Its unacceptable. The president says the u. S. In a better position to weather the trade war because the u. S. Buys more from china than china buys from the United States. The president tweeting, i say openly to president xi and all of my many friends in china, china will be hurt very badly if you dont make a deal because companies will be forced to leave china for other countries. Too expensive to buy in china. You had a great deal almost completed and backed out. The president insists its china that will pay the tariffs and the u. S. Will benefit from the taxes. Speaking to Chris Wallace on fox news sunday, the chief economic adviser, larry kudlow said some u. S. Consumers will pay for the costs. Its the u. S. Consumers and businesses that pay, right . To some extent. I dont disagree with that. Both sides will suffer on this. Weve had unfair trading practices all of these years. So in my judgment, the economic consequences are so small. But in is worth while doing. The president has said the same thing. While theres short term pain, the longterm gain of crafting new deal with china by far eclipse any of the short term pain. Something else interesting that the president said today, neil, after tweeting last tweak, that it was in the works to impose new sanctions, new tariffs of 25 on the final tranche of 325 billion in chinese good. Hes said hes not made the decision whether to go ahead with that. Maybe thats why were not down 800 points today. Neil keeping the powder dry in case. Thanks, john roberts. Potentially how bad does this get for wall street . Were still up on the year. We have come back mightily since the december selloff. That was the last time we got rattled with china. Lets ask ryan payne, scott barren and katherine is here. How worried are you that this linger as while . If it longers a lot, it has more economic impact. The fact is, this doesnt have a district impact on the u. S. Economy. Companies have three options. They can absorb the costs themselves, pass it on to the consumer or they can find an alternate source. The third option is more difficult. Theyre more likely to absorb or pass along. Certainly if we get tariffs encompassing the totality of u. S. Imports from china, the Inflation Impact is more significant. Depends on the duration. Neil one thing that has come up, china needs a deal more than we do. Do you buy that . Thats why china to use that old analogy blinks first . Absolutely. Lets be real here, neil. We have 120 billion of goods that we export there. Look at our gdp. Its 21 trillion. Its a blip on the screen. From that standpoint, china has more to lose and were in a position of strength. Neil its interesting what a number of companies have been doing in the interim to prepare to this. Gopro moved their manufacturing operations to mexico. And ford scrapping plans to export vehicles from china to the u. S. And reshuffle. Foxcon might make apple phones in india now. So a lot of protective planning has already been done. I wouldnt say a lot. Those are the oneoffs. A company like irobot also. If this extends out, i think youll see the pedal to the metal with that happening. Some Major Companies may have plans in the works but have not pulled the trigger. I think that will accelerate if this continues an. Ill tell you the market react. The dow was down, s p was down. Ill tell you it was a muted sell off. There was volatility but no panic. I look at the selloff, obviously 80 because of what happened over the weekend and President Trump now digging in and china coming back. A lot of it was because investors are looking at the top of the market that weve seen a couple weeks ago and saying, this is maybe the reason why i need to sell right now. Neil katherine, its interesting per scotts point. Im not minimizing the 600point hit in the dow. Its 2 . Having said that there were half full glass stories. Interest rates going down. Utilities did okay. People were putting their money somewhere. Im wondering would that drop in interest rates, whether that helps stocks rebound . In other words, were in an environment where so far inflation isnt a worry. Maybe a little bit slower pace for the recovery. What do you think . Look, neil, the u. S. Is in a phenomenal position. The economy grew 3. 2 . Thats above potential growth. When it grows like that, thats usually inflationary. We got deflation decelerating to 1. 5 . Do the math. What we concluded is inflation, the impact on inflation from current tariffs, even if they were to be increased, is insignificant. Were talking. 2 points. Inflation is 1. 5 . Neil i dont think inflation is a worry. The one thing that stands out here, when these take hold, the china side, our side, june 1, the 25 tariffs on 200 billion worth of chinese goods, their tariffs on about 60 billion american goods, theres some wiggle room there to avoid this. If we dont by then, a whole lot of items will see instant price hikes. That might not be 25 is going to be a sticker shock, isnt it . It could be. The consumer is in great shape. We have a very disciplined consumer right now. If you look at the numbers from consumers, theyre not flowing. All the extra money that they have made, youre seeing the wage increase. Youre getting the sell off. The Global Economy is strong. Its not in bad shape. You shouldnt miss this buying opportunity while the stocks are down. I agree. Neil wish we had more time. Thanks very much. Breaking news with iran. Also by the way, just a reminder on the china scares that weve had before, theyre material. Every time we come back so if you stay in the market, youll be rewarded. Thats the history in the yearlong back and forth. Meantime, i did mention iran. Any other day, this would be the lead story. We have opecrelated shifts getting singled out for attacks. We have a big military presence getting bigger as we speak throughout the persian gulf and we have senator Joe Lieberman here to make sense of it all after this. Touch shows how we really feel. Put your employees on a path to Financial Wellness with prudential. Bring your challenges. Well see what happens with iran. If they do anything, it will be a very bad mistake. Im hearing little stories about iran. If they do anything, that will suffer greatly. Well see what happens with iran. Neil were seeing theres been trouble brewing in the region. We have already extended and advanced our military presence there. The last 24 hours, cargo and related ships from the United Arab Emirates and saudi arabias case were targeted were told but i by iranian groups. Lets get the read from Joe Lieberman who joins us now, the former senator, Vice President ial candidate. Things are heating up fast in that neck of the woods. Whats going on . First things were focusing on iran. In the end, they worry more than the trade conflict with china. Were in a good position with the trade conflict with china but in a better position in iran. Thats why theyre looking to threaten us. Their economy is tanking. Part of the reason its tanking is the president pulled out of the Iran Nuclear Agreement, which was the right thing to do in my opinion. He sanctioned the Iranian Revolutionary guard corps and tightened the sanctions on them. Theyre hurting. The country in many ways is unstable right now. You have president rohani over the weekend saying to his people, things could get as bad for us as they were during the iran iraq war in the 80s. Neil the iranians have said the americans have caused these tensions by abandoning the accord. Maybe so, but it was a terrible accord. The Trump Administration did the right thing. Neil let me ask you about this news that just broke with senator rubio urging the state department to investigate whether john kerry violated the logan act, which does not allow you to talk to foreign leaders. That was something is that President Trump raised last week. How do you feel about that . I thought that john kerry made a terrible mistake in talking to the foreign minister of iran almost giving him advice with how to deal with the Trump Administration, which is at odds ordealing with iran. Its the wrong thing do do. We have one secretary of state at a time. If you have been privileged to be secretary of state when your term is over, you shouldnt do this kind of thing. Just think about how john kerry would have felt when he was secretary state in the middle of a negotiation with some foreign power, particularly a hostile power, if conde rice or colon powell went over there and talked to their foreign minister. Neil you think he violated the act . Its probably overkill. As far as i know, maybe nobody has ever been prosecuted under the logan act. But its establishing a principle. Its an important principle for the conduct of our Foreign Policy and respectfully john kerry violated that principle, which makes a lot of sense. I mean, to think about prosecuting him, i think we should let it go. Hes got his freedom of speech. He can say whatever he wants publicly about what the president should do with the Iran Nuclear Agreement or what i believe about it. But to go and talk to the foreign minister of iran, bad move. Neil you mentioned freedom of speech. Rasheeda talib said thats what she did when she made the comments about jews. Youre familiar with them now. But heres what she said on the subject. You know, theres this calming feeling i always tell folks when i think of the holocaust and the tragedy of the holocaust. It was my ancestors, palestinians. Some lost their land and lives in the name of creating a safe haven for jews. Neil what did you think of that . In all of the statements about the holocaust, i never heard one like that. Its obvious shes angry that about what happened to the palestinians as a result of the creation of the state of israel. Odd that she said she took comfort somehow. As a result of what she called in fairness, the horror and tragedy of the holocaust, the land that belonged to her people was given to create a safe haven for jews. But during the second word war, the jerusalem leader openly allied with hitler. Obviously neil should she apologize . Some republicans say she should be censured. Yeah. She should explain. It was an odd comment. She would be better off if she stayed away from these subjects and focused on doing things for her constituents in congress. This was really hard to follow. Of course, in 1947, the United Nations offer a twostate solution for israel and the palestinians. The palestinians rejected it and the israelis achieved their independent as a result of fighting back. So to say they created a safe haven, its not true. Neil senator lieberman, thanks very much. You too. Neil were following the developments at the corner of wall and broad. Well tell you about that and a climate fight is heating up. Mayor bill de blasio Holding Green new deal rallies today. Just how big a role will this be playing in 2020 . Well see. With all that usaa offers why go with anybody else . We know their rates are good, we know that theyre always going to take care of us. Cut your emissions or we will cut something you really care about. We will take your money. We will fine you. We will hold you accountable. Neil bill de blasio slamming President Trump as he promotes his Green New Deal. Bernie sanders will be with alexandria ocasiocortez later today at their own event. How important is this issue heading into 2020 . Lets ask our panel, janna caldwell. We have Eliza Collins and jason nichols. Jason, for the democratic perspective, this is expensive stuff. No one has put a price tag on it or how to address the price tag. Does it boomerang on democrats . No, i dont think it does. First of all, i think people have to understand what the Green New Deal is. We really dont have a lot of folks. Its just a lot of goals that have been set. If you look at what Congress Woman ocasiocortez put out there, it was a 14page report, nonbinding resolution. People are just starting to state what the goals are. This is something talking about creating jobs and making things safer for americans. So i dont see how you can be opposed to it. Neil i guess i need details how to foot the bill for it. Janna, whatever merits it has, we talked about john kennedy wanting to put a man on the moon. People said lets do the math. The two are not similar. We couldnt assess the cost until we were going along with it. It got prohibited. Maybe this is a goal and we do have a greener cleaner planet. There should be more math here. Well, i mean, we do have what some pry limb ordinary numbers look like. To jasons point, saying we dont know what it is, we do know what it is. Its the cow fart bills. Democrats lie about its true. They lie about supporting saying they support the bill. Meanwhile almost all the democrats voted against the legislation. One that they said they support. They cheat by support ago bill that they voted against. When we talk about the 2020 election its a nonbinding resolution. Neil and lets talk about i do want to get i think joe biden is one that hasnt signed on to it. He signs on to the goals but not all the details. Maybe hes straddling the fence here. Maybe im misrepresenting his position. Hes the runaway favorite. He seems leery. What are you hearing . Biden has not totally signed on to the bill. Theres others that have not as well, a lot of people said they respect the goals, they like the listed aspirations. Were seeing this play out in congress as well, right . Were seeing people like Congress Woman ocasiocortez that is pushing this. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi who has taken a pragmatic approach trying to bring in some of the republicans that are leery of it, have pushed for a more middle ground piece of legislation that did pass the house, which is to put congress put the u. S. Back into the paris climate acourt. That wont go anywhere in the senate. The far left is calling for a complete overhaul though its a list of aspirations rights now. Thats what pelosi says. Neil let me ask you about that, jason. Everybody wants a cleaner planet. I get that. The goals, sweeping goals are fine. Do you think that the idea is to put republicans on defense leaving its a big thing to leave aside the cost of this to giannos point. But do you think that is what is at stake . They want to say all right, do you think the environment is worth addressing President Trump . I dont think the goals are coming up in that way. I think the goals are to have a cleaner planet. To have fewer carbon emissions. Neil wouldnt it be nice if they attached costs to that and said this is how were going to do it . These are the things that people are trying to figure out right now. What does this look like . How is this going to work . People are talking about talking about neil what are you saying, gianno . Why did they vote present . If theyre goals they support, why did they vote present . Because its not hashed out. People want ideas and facts and figures neil thats where its a problem. I can give you a goal that i want to lose weight. Eventually youll bump in a year later and say how is that goal go something people will say, wait a minute. You havent delivered the goods. So its one thing that is talking a good game. Another to deliver. Do you know or do you that whoever emerges an a nominee will have it spelled out . Climate change is different for democrats. Polling he this is a number 1 or 2 issue broadly. But how to deal with it. Theres broad thoughts on this. Theres some people that think expensive and like the green theres questions that republicans have seized on to about what that actually mean. Can you replace every building in the u. S. . Youre saying that gianno wants a dirty, filthy planet because hes too cheap to address it, right . Gianno thats what she just said. Thats not what i said, no. No, no. Your goal if your goal is to lose weight, neil, then at least its on your agenda, which i think that is what democrats are trying to do. Were trying to put the conversation neil theyre im not going to charge you for my diet. If i can break in, its like a stated goal of reparations. Neil so much to do. I want to thank you all. We did save time. I appreciate that. I dont think retails appreciate tariffs, especially the ones getting ready for christmas. Yeah, christmas. Theyre not in a good mood. After this. Retailers are worried about what will pan out in december, especially with higher tariffs coming our way. Hoho or ho hum . After this. A lobster in our hot tub . Lobster oh, you guys. Theres a jet oh. I needed this. No, i cant believe how easy it was to save hundreds of dollars on our Car Insurance with geico. We could have been doing this a long time ago. So, you guys staying at the hotel . Yeah, we just got married. Oh hoho congratulations thank you. Yeah, im afraid of commitment. And being boiled alive. Oh, shoot. Believe it. Geico could save you 15 or more on Car Insurance. That guys the worst. Neil all right. You might not like the idea of potentially 25 tariffs coming your way the next time you go into a store, lets say early june when a lot of tariffs are supposed to hit. How would you like to be the same retailer getting ready for the Holiday Shopping season as we speak . Deidra bolton on the joltin we could be enduring. What a crazy day, neil. This could affect every ones money from now till the end of the year. Lets look at the places that this will show up first. So the chinese obviously imposing the tariffs on u. S. Goods. A big agricultural focus. We have to point that out. First, the chinese clever. They know most of the midwest who voted for President Trump, they know were going to be soon in election season. So some of the products will be affected. Decaf coffee, frozen fruits, nuts. A quick short list. You were talking about more tangibles. Gems and jewelry. Fabrics, cosmetics. These are some of the u. S. Goods that if a chinese person wants to buy he or she will have to pay more. Goldman sachs put out a note talking about the similar effect here. So one thing that we saw that backed up that notion, neil, in addition to this 10 out of 11 groups on the s p 500 falling, one of the biggest faller was was consumer discretionary. You mentioned the holidays. Im going through some of the lists. Furnitur furniture. Some consumer len reason to nicks. People will pay on average 770 more. Heres the retailers that are on our screens right now for everyone to follow. Home depot, lowes, best buy, dollar tree. Some of the companies that may be affected from these june 1 tariffs if in fact they go into effect as we expect. A crazy day as you know on the floor of the stock exchange. Lots of clapping at the closing bell. Many just glad its over. Neil end it. Put a stamp on it. Thanks, deidra. So is it worth the short term pain for the longterm gain . Thats my question. Congressman, thanks for stopping by. Thanks for having me, neil. A lot of people are anxious habit the tariffs kicking in, that it wont be so easy as the last batch. 25 hike in the price of a lot of different goods is hard to absorb on the part of the businesses passing them along. Then what . A couple things. The tariffs are not supposed to take effect until june 1. So we have a few more weeks to go. Secondly, the president campaigned on ideas such as this one. He said were getting a raw deal from china. China has been cheating and they have been not playing fair. So he said enough is enough. Im going to make good on this promise and i believe the short term pain is worth the longterm gain. Neil so youre convinced on this. The president is fighting fire with fire. If it doesnt end soon, farmers will get ticked off. Hes promising them relief. I talked to more than a few that are getting anxious. Retailers are getting worried. The folks that thought this would pass are getting worried that it might not. Reassuring them ill do that. Ill also have them look back to the recent history. The president said were going to build this wall and shut down the government until it gets down. People were worried about the shut down. Lines were long at tsa. Now the government is back open. We have a wall being built on the southern border. So this president makes promises. He never promises they will be painfree. Hes promising well win this war with china, this trade war and i believe him. Hes made good on every promise hes made. He will to the same here. Neil you think he should warn people that theres a good possibility that theres everyday items, 5,000, 6,000 plus are going to go up and he may be makes a National Address or tells people what to prepare for . Im telling you, i still talk to people, congressman, that thinks governments will pay the tariffs, not them. The president has not said this will be easy, whether its the border wall or tariffs with china. The president said were going to be in this for the long hall. The short term pain will be worth the gain. Were to a point where tariffs from china cause such a state of the panic, then we have leaned on china too much. This is a longtime coming, this needs to happen. We need to get away from this dependence on chinese goods. The country will be better off in the longterm. We shall see. Thank you. Neil our deficit with china is a little over half a trillion. They buy a little over 100 billion of stuff from us. The argument has always been that they stand more to lose. Someone has not parentally passed that along to them. More after this. [knocking] memories. What we deliver by delivering. What do all these people have in common, limu . [ guttural grunt ] exactly. Nothing theyre completely different people. Thats why they make customized Car Insurance from liberty mutual. Theyll only pay for what they need. Yes, and they could save a ton. Youve done it again, limu. [ limu grunts ] only pay for what you need. Liberty, liberty, liberty, liberty woow yeahhh there we go this memorial day, start your summer off right in a new chevrolet. And now, during the chevy Memorial Day Sales event, get 0 financing for 72 months on these select chevy models. Or current gm owners can get twenty seven fifty total cash allowance on this traverse. Find new roads at your local chevy dealer. President the has done nothing but increase the tariffs. The debt, the trade deficit. The only people paying the price are farmers and working people right now. Hes going about it all the wrong way. A lot of bravado, no action. That was the former president , joe biden in new hampshire. He said this is proof that hes not getting it done. Michael barron on what he makes of that. What do you think, michael . I think its kind of weird that joe biden has a policy or attitude towards china. Barack obama attacked mitt romney and said you have the Foreign Policy of the 80s. Biden has the Foreign Policy of the 90s when we assumed that trade would be all benefit. We assumed that increase in chinas wealth through trade would produce a more democratic china, would produce a more peaceful china, less threatening china in asia. Those werent crazy things to believe, but turns out they were wrong. Neil turns outs he could be wrong calling china this not nearly competitive threat. It clearly is. Im wondering if it boomerangs on him. It could. In iowa, a week ago, he saying china wont eat our lunch. Theyre not bat folks, folks. You know, one of his claims for the presidency is that hes had extensive Foreign Policy experience. He served on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for 34 of his 36 years in the senate. Thats a long time. As Vice President , like all Vice President s the last 40 years, he was involved in Foreign Policy making at the highest levels. Presumably learned something from it. But he doesnt seemed to have learned much the last 20 years with china. The fact is, china has cheated on the trade rules. Stolen intellectual property. They have taken concessions in the trade talks. Neil maybe the audience that whom youre speaking, theyre genuinely ticked off about this. Their business is hurting. Maybe that was his way of reaching out to them and saying theres better ways to do this. Is that affected . Perhaps thats what he was doing. He wasnt speaking to a farmer audience. That was at the time. University town, the most democratic in all 99 counties, i think it is you know, theres the take on joe biden is hes a gas machine. Since hes announced for president , he hasnt seemed to be making any terrible guests. Hes not shown he has expertise in Foreign Policy, which is something that really distinguishes him from any of the two or three dozen other democrats that seem to be running for president. Michael barron following closely. A if youre just tuning in, we know that Felicity Huffman is pleading dpiltty. What we dont know is whether shes going to be going to jail. Hey, who are you . Then she broke down in front of the judge. This is in respect to discussing her daughter. She said at 8 years old, she started to see a neuro psychologist and at 11, she received extra time to take tests. Many of those involved fake the need for the extra test taking time which would allow the cheating parties to go to a test site and somebody else would take the exam. Huffmans point defended her daughter is legitimately needing the time and not faking a disability or illness. Huffman said my daughter knew nothing about my actions and in my misguided and profoundly wrong way, i have betrayed her. Another parent in court today, devin sloan entering his own guilty plea.
