100 billion in tariffs. It really should come as no surprise, he promised at this action for decades. He was clear on it all through the campaign trail and appears willing to call chinas bluff and to let the u. S. Market shatter in the process. Thats exactly what happened. The dow is down 570 points and thats one of the better numbers. Chief National Correspondent ed henry joins with the latest. Hang onto your seat. Absolutely. Theres no surprise when you think about the fact that President Trump promised over and over in the campaign to get tough on china. That was complicated by keeping that promise, there should be some economic issues, but also some political ones and those midterms. The president and a radio interview today and what he said talk of a trade war, but in many ways weve already fought and lost the trade war. Chinas cheating has been ignored by republicans and democratic president s. He said its killed thousands of american factories, millions of american jobs and were stuck not with a 500 billion trade deficit. Heres the thing, even antitrump columnist acknowledged today in the Washington Post President Trump is right, previous administrations exerted pressure privately, worked within the system, try to get allies on board with limited results. Im willing to give unconventional methods a try, but nothing else was worked. Stephen ocean today flat out admitting that there is potential for a new trade war even though larry kudlow tries to calm everyone down saying this is just a careful negotiation. You use threats to get china to make these minor concessions that start to level the playing field. We are considering adding tariff pressures, considering. I dont want to disrupt the economy, the president doesnt want to disrupt the economy, we need not to disrupt the economy. This is a moderate temperate approach that we are taking. It is moderate, temperate, and proportional. This is not a trade war. Were going to have a much stronger country when theyre finished and thats what im all about. We have to do things that other people dont want to do. All of that contributed to the roller coaster markets. The chinese side will follow through on the end and will not have to take the fight back at any cost. In china very crafty. Theres another election in 2020. Martha there is. Ed, thank you very much. How lambert is the founder of point Bridge Capital and the creator of the make America Great again etf which is a fond that trades essentially trump friendly stocks and has done quite well. It took a hit today, like everything else, but its done quite well. Jonah goldberg joins us as well. Fox news contributor as well. Jonah, thanks so much. Great to see you tonight and how great to see you. How, you greeted this fund which i can imagine did really well because you look for companies that have republicans leaning and republicans thinking leadership in them, right . Correct. I started this fund in september of last year. The top 150 companies in the s p 500 which supports republicans including President Trump has done well since its launch. As industrials, its financials, its oil and gas. Its a broad spectrum. Martha you mentioned to me earlier, you said youre not concerned. You believe what President Trump said, that eventually the markets will ride this out and theyll improve. Exactly. I think the markets focused on very shortterm trading pattern patterns. President trump has a start of negotiations. He started off with a stick and china has responded, but the stick is not the final place that we are going to end up. Were going to end up in a place where well come out in a much stronger position long term. Hes a businessman, not a politician and he is focused putting america first. China has been a predatory trade partner and its been an unfair trade for many, many years. Its always ended poorly and this is going to be different. Martha it strikes me. Ive been thinking about this the last couple of days thinking about this whole story that we have been in a trade war for a very long time, we just havent been fighting it. Weve been letting it happen. Why not step it up . Nothing else has worked. First of all, its absolutely true on an intellectual property, china has behaved really badly and so have a lot of american businesses who have basically agreed to have their ip taken from them and then go whining about it to american politicians rather than refusing to be part of it. If we had to get to tariffs to get some compliance from china, i would be open. I see a major disconnect with the fact that this is a thought out, serious plan about negotiating. You had larry kudlow who was an old friend of mine surprise this morning, he didnt know anything about these hundred Million Dollar tariffs. What donald trump leaves believes in, they sell productss like boeing and farmers, they dont believe in it. We cant get a coherent message including the chinese. Martha it when you look back at those early stages of this discussion and we been looking way back. This isnt a level playing field, but when he first asked, they said we want much higher than that. This is classic trump and youre right, it probably isnt thought out, but its classically go shooting tactic which i would imagine is an effort to force them to say we are going to go to the table and talk this out. I think President Trump is been very clear. He believes in fair trade and fair trade. Its not protectionism, its free and fair trade. What we put on is about 10 of what we buy from them. They put on four times the amount of tariffs that President Trump put on and thats why President Trump came out today and said we ought to look at doing 100 billion. This isnt some sort of thing thats going on. Its whats going on, and hes looking out for american businesses. China has a stolen billions and billions of dollars of intellectual property from our companies. They have massive tariffs already going into their countries, they are not an open society, there not an open trade partner and we believe and fair and fair trade. Martha jonah, final thought . Hes not looking out for american consumers. Tariffs or taxes. Even larry kudlow still says that and they have been rolled out in a chaotic way. Im in fear of playing tough with china. China is much more interested in being a good citizen because they have so much more to lose. There is 400 complaints with the wto right now. It takes five or six years. Thats why they should have started earlier with the complaint. Martha thank you very much much. Things for joining us on the story. Very interesting. Coming up, remember this . It got some stickers at the time, but no more. Minute National Strategy for space recognizes that space is a war fighting domain, just like the land, air, and c. We may even have a space for us. Martha sound like a movie, but as it turns out, space for his coming. We will show you what it looks like and what russia and china are already doing up there. Hes the college kid who built the multibillion Dollar Company connecting you to a friends. He find it on capitol hill . And might be a very long weekend for 60 billion man Mark Zuckerberg as he preps for grilling on capitol hill. Democrats have been up in arms basically because they think that facebook made users an unwitting tool in the election. Republicans think a social network is a big brother pushing their views. Lets be clear, we dont store peoples data. We dont give your data to any advertisers. Martha Trace Gallagher live and our west coast newsroom. Facebook is apologizing for a reason. The company has already admitted of its 2. 2 billion members, many have likely had their personal information harvested by malicious actors also known as bad people. Mark zuckerberg says these bad actors have been at it for years and at some point, have probably access to information. Todays a sitdown with dana perino, facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg says facebook is going to Great Lengths to make sure this never happens again. Watch. This is a long process. We expect to find more, just like we do this weekend and we are going to proactively come out and fix the problems. Most of us went public after revelations that some 90 million facebook users have their data stolen by Political Intelligence Firm Cambridge Analytic code. The information was then used for political purposes, but these types of bridges have been going on at facebook for years and sandberg says the remedy is to create something where everyone can safely share. Here she is talking about russian meddling including what they knew and when they knew it. How far back as a go . Does know in the fall of 2015 that it had a problem with russians trying to influence the election . We did not know then. Now we do. Grading transparency is a top agenda item. Considering adults get their news from facebook, the company now says it will only share news and information from trusted news sources, both conservative and liberal and that includes vetting political sources. Here she is again. If you are running not just an election as a candidate, but were going to publish a list of issues. Were going to verify who you are. Your location, your identity. If we dont think its correct, we will let you run. If you missed it, facebook executives wanted to let you know there sorry. Martha they said that a few times. Will here a bit more. Good evening, good to see you. You have written a very interesting piece that goes to the heart of that question because the mea culpa is what is expected. Were so sorry, were going to fix this problem, were not going to try your confidence anymore, but you have sort of a different tactic that you recommended Mark Zuckerberg take on. He cant win. Republicans are mad at him, democrats are mad at him. Hes in a very hostile situation on wednesday. What im saying is sure, apologize, but why not take a stand on the principal and present with pride . They made a mistake, thats what happens when you do something, when you build something, when you create companies. If you want to make mistakes, you need to sit behind a computer screen and click like. In terms of what you think you should say because youre a very specific and your peace coming out this week, what exactly do you think he needs to make . I think he should say that he built this company, not as hes been saying for the past 15 years, because he wanted to create communities, but because he was interested in technology and he was interested in finding a market need where he could provide some value. Now that people are saying come out we didnt know we were just using it for free, we cant do much about what Mark Zuckerberg is going to do, but we can do something about what we, ourselves do. We should all know, we can all know nothing is free. Even when using this and thinking about it, it was created by something. That is going to have to be paid by someone, whether its a user fee or whether or not this Television Program is being paid right now by advertisers. Martha he did speak to nbc earlier today and that was suggested. Sheryl sandberg said we dont have too opt out at the highest level, that would be a paid product which i think is an interesting tantalizing suggestion on our part. If facebook wanted to put their money where their mouth i is, we see all of the fine print and its too much to read and its written in language that we cant understand. We click yes, agreed to terms and conditions. What if you actually agree . Mark zuckerberg himself came on and a video and he said this isnt free and using our products, we are going to have access to your data and its going to be fair. Martha thank you very much. Well see what he does and see if he takes any of your advice and terms of how he walks in there when it comes time to go to the hill next week. Thank you, good to see you. Coming up next, there have been three crashes claiming five lives in less than one week. A lot of you come to terms about our militaries aging equipment and the ability to fight at home and abroad. Plus this. One of the very few people who talk about how awful this family is, semiback and ill clean it up. He benefit from the system. Martha start a new documentary showing how deep the swamp really is in washington and a new report reveals republicans may be in more danger in november and the midterms than originally thought. The men who literally wrote the book on government wage, tom colburn wants to weigh in on the midterms and Chris Stirewalt with an eyeopening look next. The house will definitely flip. Martha despite President Trumps Approval Rating that is enough to offset the g. O. P. s edge from favorable drawn districts and in danger there 23 seat majority. What would a Trump Presidency look like with a Democratic House and the white house and the gdp seemed to be rattled or unnerved by this prospect. Here now, tom colburn. Thank you so much for coming in tonight. What is your take . From a distance, we all know whats on. Republicans crowing about the control they had over the house and the senate and the white house was what they had wanted for years and years and years. It was a onceinalifetime opportunity and now they seem to be saying were pretty satisfied with what weve got. In my adult life, ive seen this a lot. You get mpower, you want to stay in power and you do what you told the people you would do. We just saw a budget bill passed for 1. 3 trillion. Thats not what they want to be known for, but thats they will be known for. What they are doing is, they played the game shorthanded and they say maybe will make it. What happens is People Lose Trust in them. Martha when you look at the races that have happened so far, youve got pennsylvania, it didnt look like there was a tremendous rally around. Whether or not you think he was a great candidate, but the effort to hang onto these republican seats. What we hear more and more from republicans on the hill, its not unusual when you have the presidency, when your party as president and the white house that when it comes from the first run of midterms, you lose the house. He look at whats been accomplished so far and tax reform is clearly a big accomplishment for republicans, its certainly something that was on their checklist. Do you feel like they should be satisfied with the progress theyve made so far with this golden opportunity . It known. The u. S. Citizen has paid a lot of taxes every year, im not at all. Why havent they created transparency on health care . One in every 3 in health care is wasted. The average now is 7,900 for a family. Theyd would like to see a cheaper deal, a better deal. Mandate that prices are transparent. They can do that, they can pass that bill. How can you be against knowing what your prices before you pay for it . How about over siding . How about building a team to oversight the federal government and getting rid of it . They didnt have to borrow 1. 3 trillion. Thats what our deficit is going to be this year. They didnt have to do that. They could have done it out of their way. I bet you the American People, as a whole would much rather have seen a Government Shutdown than a bill passed in the dark of the night that nobodys red that added 1. 3 trillion to our spending. Martha there is a divide. Do the hard work. Martha you havent heard from republicans, we dont want to shut down. The president at several points, he said shut it down. Lets push the envelope and see what happens. You cant send that bill and then say next time i wont sign it. Youve lost all leverage. You grow the government. Whats hard is to be frivolous with american taxpayers money and hold it accountable. Theyll do this to him again. September 30th, i guarantee well see another another resolution bill. You wont see the appropriation bill. We havent seen one since 2003. Martha youre right, youre going to see fdr and then another and december. Senator colburn, thank you. Its good to hear your voice on this. Thank you so much. Chris stirewalt is with me now, you get the feeling when you watch this, maybe its going to ramp up in the coming months as we get closer to the midterms, but the posture from many republicans out there is were pretty much done with business, we are super excited about that and we think thats going to write us through the midterms, but even if we do lose the majority in the house and the midterms, thats typically what happens. I dont think thats the way people voted republicans in the last election and they expected this would play out. They thought it would be a Tremendous Energy behind that. One of the reasons is because people like tom colburn and trey gowdy, these conscientious conservatives who stick to their guns on the issues that matter to them and their constituents no matter what. They eventually get fed up and go home because they cant change it. You cant turn the boat. Tom colburn is one of the strongest voices and conservative in years and he could not change the point of view with his colleagues in congress or this president or anybody because it takes on the gravity of its own. We should remember, to be fair, to be merciful to people. We should remember that finding issues on which there are a lot that they can legislate on that would be popular. Either one of two things. Their base would revolt completely if they were to do something on lets say gun control. If they did some thing on immigration, they are popular positions they could take that would get 70 of the electric, but they killed the midterms anyway. Theyre choosing dont because they dont have to break a sweat. Martha do you think the white house, because President Trump is not a formal politician, do you have a sense of the rap that will be heading their way . You look back at benghazi and the oversight efforts of republicans during the obama administration. I would imagine he would see a mirror image of that that would be relentless daily. Am i wrong . Scott pruitt will have to go hide under it all the rocks. Anything the democrats get their teeth into up to and including impeachment all suddenly gets on the table. Let me tell you a different dangerous scenario for republicans. Theres a middle point. Theyve got 24 seat cushion and their majority. If that 24 goes on to a handful, its almost worse to have the majority because you cant govern. Theres too many defections, you cant pass legislation and your party that works with itself and the other guys dont have to take responsibility for it. At least when you lose the house, you can say to democrats, what do you want to do . Martha the dirty secret may be there may be some on the hill who say where the opposition. Chris, thank you very much. Coming up, and may sound like something out of this world, but the military says a space war is and the United States is not ready. Next, how this could cripple america. A new film shedding light on the late senator ted kennedys chappaquiddick car crash that killed a young woman. Her cousin towards me exclusively on what this movie means for her family. This country has a deep connection to the kennedy name and that is valuable. We cant just let that go to waste. We need to remind the American People what this family has been through and how much more we have left to achieve. Can one medicine help treat both blood sugar and cardiovascular risk . With expedia, you could book a flight, hotel, car, and activity all in one place. Were on the move. Hey rick, all good . Oh yeah, were good. Were good. Terminix. Defenders of home. Come fly with me, lets fly, lets fly away. Martha talk of space wars and whether or not we are ready for them. The immediate battle appears to be in orbit. Those are mishaps that occurred. We look at each one. Each one is tragic and we regret each want. We look at them carefully. Im not prepared to say its in some form of crisis. Martha hes talking about three separate aircrafts to crash this week that claimed the lives of five American Service members including these marines who died tuesday in a Helicopter Crash in california. Officials insisting that this weeks crashes are not connected to each other. There have now been five noncombat accidents this year alone killing nine service members. Last year there were 37 aviation deaths. That is nearly double the number in 2016, which raises obviously a lot of questions about how to keep our members of the service safe. Joining me now, rebecca grant, the National Security analyst. Good to have you here tonight. The first question is what jordan reed is on the tragedies that we have seen unfolding, one after the other. Those crashes are not going to turn out to have any technical linkage. They are linked by the fact that they remind us of the sacrifice and the patriotism of those aircrews, but they are three Different Air systems. We have to wait for the accident reports, but the crash of the 88b, i suspect that some maintenance and she would, that pilate was very lucky to eject, he did very well. We dont know the causes yet. The thunderbird f16, thats a very highly rated team and you have to see what caused that tragedy, but they will be unrelated. That said, there is a crisis in military aviation. We need new aircraft for our cruise and the more funding and flying hours. Martha no doubt and as general mattis says, we have to fund in our country to do this safely, has to be the priority. I have to ask you about this other fascinating report about space wars and whether or not we need a separate space for us and our military to fight them. Here is the president referring to this and right after that, well hear from the air force director joint chief of staff. Lets play these sound bites. Up my new National Strategy for space recognizes that the space is a war fighting domain, just like the land, air, and c. We may even have a space force. We have the air force, will have the space force. I believe will be fighting from space in a matter of years. Where the service that must lead joint war fighting in this new contested domain. Its not only our destiny, its with the nation demands. Martha i think of star wars, can you imagine battles that happen in our orbit even . As a stunning future, but the way we watch things happen, its fairly predictable that we will be fighting up there, isnt it . It is and whats driving this is russia and china have both developed Counter Space give abilities. Our satellites are so important to our military and to our daily lives in the global economy. We have to protect those satellites on orbit because of these advantages they give our military forces and also the precision of navigation and timing and everything throughout our daily lives. Think about space work, forget isis and terrorism, this could affect every single american as it comes to pass. Well be talking about this for the next several years. Martha so much of our technology is on these satellites. If you can take out someones satellite and you can basically put them in a situation, which used to be practice already, our military, which is called a day without space and you say its pretty ugly. Are military depends, think about our ships, bombers, even our folks on the ground, they rely on that. We have some very important we have four missile morning satellites. They sit up there and they watch. A north Korean Missile launch for example and telus were that missile may be heading. Thats vital to world stability. Theyre vulnerable to other interference. Theyll say russia, china, anybody else, dont try it. We have a strategy so we can compensate for any interference. Martha cant wait to see how this plays out. Rebecca, thank you so much. Great to have you tonight. Thank you. Martha coming up next, her tragic death helped derail ted kennedys political aspirations. You will have a political future if you are in jail. I think you need to cool down here. I understand my problems with the press. Martha now chappaquiddick being told in a whole new light. Up next in a the story exclusive, we speak with mary jos cousin. She tells us what ted kennedy told them and reveals the news that made mary jos parents feel like they lost her all over again. Just say, badda book. Badda boom. Book now at choicehotels. Com. After bobby was killed, i wanted to run this place. What would you have done . What would you have done . Id quit, leave washington, never look back. Which is exactly what i did. Martha thats from the new movie chappaquiddick which opens tonight. It was the night that ended a young womans life and ted kennedys white house aspirations. This telling wire copy was one of the first headlines the next day. It read ted saved, blonde dies the blonde had a name of course. Mary jo kopechne. She was a staffer for Bobby Kennedy and the family says this movie showed her how she was. Our bright young woman whose life had a promising young future that was snuffed out. Today speculations continues surrounding her death including that her body was found in the backseat area of the car and why another womans purse was also recovered from that car. I recently sat down with georgiana petoskey, her cousin and close confident and author of the book our mary jo. What goes through your mind reliving this story and washington on the big screen . It was very powerful. It was very emotional and it was very sad. We did like the movie, we thought they did a masterful job with it. I thought jason clark, you thought you were watching ted kennedy and kate marro was darling and sweet and i think it captured mary jos personality. At the same time, they walked a fine line with some of the scenes so not to imply the wrong thing and we appreciate that because mary jo was a woman full of integrity and intelligence and ambition and we still miss her to this day in our family. Martha im sure you do. She was from not far where i live and i imagine its still so enormous for you to this day. I know you have a lot of questions about ted kennedys role in all this and what they were even doing in that car together in the first place, right . It when we first heard that he said he was taking her to the ferry to catch the last ferry, i believe that because mary jo would not have stayed overnight and she would have wanted to go home. It seemed perfectly natural for us that they would be trying to catch the last ferry and having lived in new england, we know most ferry lines stop at midnight. He said they left the cottage at 1115 and were going to catch the last ferry, that made sense to us at least at the time that this was all happening. Martha when you see those behind the scenes of the kennedy clans getting together, really focused on trying to save ted kennedys integrity, trying to save the kennedy name and all of that. We tell the truth, at least our version of it. It ends with an appeal to the people that elected me. We need to remind them that this family perseveres that we dont back down from a fight, that we dont get backed into a corner. We have a true compass and we follow it. Martha i can imagine that youre sitting there wondering. That was hard to watch, but not unknown to most people who lived through the kennedy era. Most politicians have those types of personal family meetings to negotiate strategy, but it was a little hard. We kept thinking that he would make a right decision, but he had plenty of chances to do that. He just didnt do it. Martha third is a suggestion that she didnt drown, that she suffocated and was alive for a long time and that car. I wonder what you think about that. Thats one of the hardest things we had to accept. Her parents in particular thought that she had died instantly. A few years after she died, they went and spoke with the scuba diver and he told us she could have lived up to three hours in the air bubble in the car and it was like they had lost her all over again. Her father in particular just grieved. It was awful. Martha i can imagine. In terms of the movie, there is some discussion now that there was an effort to suppress it, that some supporters of the families didnt want to come out. Does that surprise you . Theres always been a lot of suppression of books and stories and this is the first time in almost 50 years of the movie is being made. When we saw the film, the scenes that they had photographed were just like the scenes that had been running through our heads for 50 years. They did a great job. Martha do you remember learning this news, it mustve been such an enormous shock for your family. Were you even aware that she was n afterwards and will tell you everything about what happened. They were destroyed anyway and they were not in any position to have any long, complicated conversations. We got through the week and the funeral and the burial the best way we could and then we waited. Martha georgiana, thank you very much. Im glad you and your family feel that this portrayal of her is closer to the mary jo that you knew and i thank you very much for sharing your story with us here tonight. Certainly. Martha our thanks to georgiana. Mary jos family is working to keep her legacy alive. You can find out more by going to facebook and searching for Mary Jo Kopechnes scholarship page.
