It accuses assange of one of the largest compromises of classified information in u. S. History. It says the wiki leaks founder engaged in a conspiracy with Chelsea Manning to crack a Defense Department Computer Network pass word. The indictment reads, quote, at the time he entered into this agreement, assange knew manning was providing wiki leaks with classified records. Assange was knowingly receiving such classified records from manning for the purpose of publicly disclosing them on the wikileaks website. Dana what was the response from assange u. S. Attorney . There may be a claim that what he was doing was legitimate journalistic activity and what constitutes a journalist is a more complex question in the age of the internet. Wikileaks walks like a Hostile Intelligence Service and talks like a Hostile Intelligence Service. Its time to call out wikileaks for what it is. A nonstate Hostile Intelligence Service often embedded by state actors like russia. Dana ill give you a final word on that part and go to andy. That is the heart of the matter. If Julian Assange was, as secretary pompeo says, actively assisting traitors essentially in stealing classified information, then assange is a coconspirator. And if you have proof like they seem to have in this indictment, where hes working with manning to try to crack the code of something that they need to get access to the secrets, that really takes him i think out of the category of being a journalist and into somebody who is either involved in theft or something worse like espionage. Dana i also want to ask you, dan, about ecuador. Theres been a change in leadership. Rafael curao, the former leader, granted asylum to assange. Theres a new leader there. Basically, hes saying Julian Assange had turned on ecuador and that he was threatening the ecuadoran government with wikileaks. Apparent i he was seeking to blackmail the ecuadoran government. Julian assange was charged with hacking back in the 1990s so he had some of the skills to do this. That would all be something we factored in. Dana that was back when he was in australia. Andy, let me ask you about this process. It could be very lengthy, as i understand, trying to extradite somebody from one country to another. Citizen of neither of those countries. Yeah. Britains extradition is laborious. I remember years ago we had an extradition from there with respect to somebody who was involved in the Embassy Bombing back in, you know, 2000. And it was a process. It took over a year. I think there are going to be complicated legal issues here. One of the things i was curious about, dana, the statute of limitations seems to me like it might be problematic here. I dont know when they indicted this case. Looks like these offenses took place in 2010. Most federal crimes have a five year statute of limitations. Im sure this is something they thought through so they probably have a way around it. Dana whats the process then . How would we find out about that . Does the government have to provide more information now or is it going to be in secret for awhile . You essentially are almost hostage to whatever judge in britain ends up catching this. What they can ask is almost like having a pretrial trial of the trial. They want to have all of the information to satisfy themselves before they transmit someone that theres a real case. That if it were a british offense it would be prosecuted by the british court.
