They say that the campaign got rocked. The president s Campaign Manager called the claim bogus. He blames the low turnout on the Fake News Media warning people away from the rally because of covid and protesters. Whatever the reason, one of the president s Campaign Managers in 2016 says the campaign flipped up. They were promising and under livdelivery. Thats the biggest mistake you can make in politics. President trump called them warriors for showing up in the middle of the pandemic, which he described as the kung fu, which they described as racist. The president stood by at. She also says that President Trump was joking when he said this about coronavirus testing. So i said to my people slow the testing down please pic. He didnt mention his recent firing of jeffrey berman, who was investigating his personal attorney, rudy giuliani. The president certainly has a pattern of firing watchdogs. Senate minority leader, Chuck Schumer says that he will not return a blue slip on the nomination for jay clayton. The president held mr. Clayton in very high regard when he nominated him to this position. And one more note about saturdays rally. Two more staffers have tested positive for covid19. And thats on top of the six staffers that tested positive. Before the rally, the Campaign Said that those new staffers did attend that rally but they were not wearing masks. Bret kristen, thank you. New york had more cases, more deaths, and more deaths than a nursing home, because thats who the virus affects. Governor cuomo alone is to blame for refusing to shut down new york and forcing seniors who tested positive for coronavirus back into his states nursing homes. It still plagues the city as Violent Crime continues there. The police are still not back in the east precinct in seattle. It is the citys responsibility to maintain safety in all parts of seattle, including the more dangerous conditions on capitol hill in the evenings. People who claim to be leaders say the shootings were gang related. Police have any suspects, but they investigations were tampered with. We know that after the shooting, dozens and dozens of people called 91, some of the very same people who claimed that we shouldnt have any police at a all. Bret. What we are seeing now is a movement that has objectives of tearing down statues. Look, i dont think these statues make all that much different one way or another. I dont think tearing them down is making a difference in the lives of very Many Americans black or white. Its an empty gesture. In many cases, its illegal. Its vandalism. I dont think it is going to sit well with the american public. The civil rights movements greatest achievement was that it brought people aboard. It was a tremendous success. It made being a racist one of the worst things you can say about anybody in this country today. I dont think this current movement, if thats what it is, is going to have anywhere like that. It could create backlash. Bret i want to talk about the campaign and what the fallout from this pulse Like Campaign rally. Your take on that. The Trump Campaign really wanted to bounce off of this. But it is early. It is early. This is the kind of thing weve been getting in the age of trump and his opponents. We get into these huge controversies over the smallest matters. The differences in the size of the crowd who attended the inauguration, the difference in the size of the crowd who either attended or did not attend the rally in tulsa and so on. Bret welcome of the Tulsa Campaign rally on the fallout from it, the Fire Department in tulsa says its just over they have a number at about 12,000. Either way, there were empty seats there. Its bringing up questions about what that means politically. Or should we even focus on it in the age of covid and what it means in between this political race that is happening now . The campaign is also obviously pointing to tv ratings that were skyrocketing on this network to more than 8 million. 7. 7 million. And online viewing. Should this matter . He talked about it earlier. Should it factor in . I think it does. Whether it was covert or civil unrest or the curfew or media campaigning against the rally or hostile Tech Companies controlled by a hostile foreign governments, its clear that this was lower than what the Trump Campaign had hoped to see. Its also true that even with these numbers, its still at least ten times what joe biden could draw for any such thing. Joe biden has very Serious Problems with enthusiasm. That could be a part of this conversation. It shows that donald trump has a much better advantage on enthusiasm over joe biden. I think what is interesting is that we have had many months where you could forget that there was an actual president ial Campaign Going on. The Trump Campaign knows they need to align people. There is a campaign. People need to make choices. They have to sort of force joe biden out onto the stage. He has been able to lay low up until this point. Bret your thoughts on these numbers. Im going to disagree a little bit. I dont think this matters at all. The Trump Campaign, look, to the extent that they focus on this and spend all day defending it, its an opportunity. They need to make sure, they need to do two things. One, put out positive messaging on trumps record. They need to remind people that this is a choice. For they can make it a choice, the better off they are going to be in the long run. Anything they are talking about anything else, whether it is crowd size at the rally or any of that stuff, its a missed opportunity. Bret all right, chuck, i want to play another sound bite. The sound bite that got the most attention and reaction to it. This is the testing one. Im sorry. You are going to find more people, you are going to find more cases. Slow the testing down, please. That comment that he made in jest is a comment he made in passing. Specifically with regard to the Media Coverage. We are months out now from donald trump having said that everyone who wants the test can get one. That is obviously not true. Bret what you think about that . What i think about that is that tom bevan keeps a great tally on polling results and they show that over 55 of the people do not approve of the way the president is handling the coronavirus. And his performance in tulsa is a good example why. Even if he is joking, its not the sort of thing you joke about. This is a serious pandemic. Obviously serious enough to deter people or apparently to deter people from coming out to his rally. And he is treating it with his cavalier manner to include staging a rally without masks and so on in the first place. So, there is no sugarcoating this. The Trump Campaign is coming off the rails a little bit. He can always recover. Hes got plenty of time if the economy comes back. Its not over yet. But he has done a lot of things, particularly in the affect and demeanor he projects around the coronavirus that just dont inspire a lot of confidence. This is a very good case of that. Bret all right, i want to change gears here. I think the president may be watching. We have a tweet that just popped up about a story that we did about daca and some of the kids involved. There is an effort to try to get more comprehensive immigration reform, including full funding for a border wall. It is something that republicans have been pushing for. The border wall has long been under construction. The battle war is won. Democrats have finally given in. In fact, i will be in arizona tomorrow to celebrate the 200,000 plus mile completion. Obviously there are many more miles to go. Your thoughts on that and the president pushing the wall. Its just a reminder of what worked well for him in 2016. Republicans have claimed that they care about borders. And then when they come to office. Donald trump took it so much further. There is going to be a border wall. Mexico is going to pay for it. I think voters expected not so much success on that, but also not for him to squish out in the way so many republicans over the years have. He showed that he was willing to fight for them. He needs to remember that running against joe biden is not sufficient. He needs to make an affirmative case for what he is going to accomplish in the second term. I think a lot of people are happy with what has been accomplished in the first term. Bret progress, but obviously its not everything that was promised. No, but look, again, im not sure they took him literally when he said that mexico is going to pay for it. To mollys point, to a big enough degree that it is a factor for his supporters, again, this is another example of a place that will make a tremendous contrast with joe biden and his position on immigration and all of those related issues. Joe biden wants to debate President Trump three times, traditional major debates, one president ial debate. Right. This was clearly a tactic on the part of the Trump Campaign to try to cast joe biden in a negative light that he is not up to the task. Three debates, its the standard thing. It wasnt so long ago that donald trump was suggesting that he wasnt going to do any debates. We will end up with the actual amount of three debates. He goes back to what we were saying earlier. I mean, right now, this race is basically turning out to be at the current moment, biden is not doing anything. He is not putting in policies, any debates. Its all about trump. What the Trump Campaign needs to do and wants to do is get biden on the campaign trail and engage with him, on the stage with him, and present the contrast on policy issues that are most favorable to trump and make this more of a choice in the end. Voters may not like Donald Trumps style. But at the end of the day, they are going to have to be forced to make a choice. Bret speaking of contrast, here is a contrast of a bite an end a trump add. Barack obama chose him and for 8 years, he served by the president s side stopping ebola from becoming a global pandemic. Sometimes i wake up and i think it is 1920. He does not have the fortitude to lead this country. Bret two different. What you think . Well, this will be very interesting to see how these things are litigated. What you see in the joe biden ad is trying to assure people that things are calmer. I think what is interesting about the polling that we are seeing right now is that there are some shortterm benefits that the Biden Campaign is having that might not accrue to his credit when it comes to november. We have nationwide mass hysteria and mobs tearing down statues starting with anyone affiliated with the confederacy. It has gone so far beyond that that its ridiculous. I dont think joe biden has addressed this. I will think is going to ask about it. He has a very friendly media that dont ask or force him to get answers. But the more he is tied with this extreme wing of his party and the less he stands against it, its not going to help him come november, even if right now that is not reflected. The one you know, chuck, i think there is a thought process out there that joe biden is not Hillary Clinton so that being in his delaware home for this moment seems like a good strategy for them. At some point, there will be this back and forth. But he does not have the negatives that he had in the 2016 election. He does not. I guess if it aint broke, dont fix it. For the last couple months, he has been sitting in the basement and improving in the polls, opening up a significant lead. I wouldnt be reluctant to change what is working. Obviously, President Trump is calling for all of this, because thats what you do when you are behind. You try to pull your opponent into your turf. On the point that mollie just made, i think what is striking so far about everything that has happened is how weak the backlash against the protests has been paired to the contrary, majority of the public support, if not every single method or tactic of the protest, certainly the basic message, and its true.
