For the president to intervene to seek lighter sentences for people who are covering up his own misconduct is just an egregious violation of the rule of law. Im not a big fan of roger stone. I think hes one of those guys that peaked in high school. But nine years was a very strong recommendation. This is an absolute crisis in our justice system. Where are we on the sentencing from roger stone . The allegations of interference by the president , the doj. Nancy pelosi tweeting come up by tweet, he engaged in political interference. The doj has deeply damage the rule of law by withdrawing his recommendation, stepping down. A prosecutor should be commended in the actions of the doj should be investigated. Chuck, obviously you had four of the prosecutors sat down after the doj did insert itself. The president has gratuitously publicized this, somebody who has been convicted of seven counts of covering up allegations for information that could have been damaging to the president. But whats especially striking about the gratuitous politicization about it is if he had any courage of his alleged belief that there was such a terrible amiss character of justice, he would sign the papers and end it. Instead hes doing all this nonsense which makes everybody lose faith in the whole system. Its up to josh jackson who will decide his sentence to sort this out and correct the situation. Unfortunately, he has in effect anticipated and in anticipation politicize that by attacking her as well. Bret the action by the attorney general, doj, they say was preempted, was happening before the president tweeted and that he did not have a phone call with him or communication. Obviously it starts the machines turning up on capitol hill. I think another instance of the president s tweets getting him in trouble he seems to go looking for. I just cant help but think about this story and contrast with the story of alex johnson that so Many Americans heard about that the President Campaign ran where he used his power as the commanderinchief and executive to actually address an injustice to grant clemency to a woman who received a sentence that far outstrips a crime and its a story of him doing good things like that that on virtually can get pushed to the side when all of a sudden hes also trying to make sure that his buddies are taken care of and using the power of the presidency to protect them. Its a stark contrast in the country would be better off if you do more of the former and the of the latter. Attorney general has not been afraid to speak up when he thinks something is wrong. Irrespective of the president s tweets. Here he is on the baseless russia probe as he called it. There was and never has been any evidence of collusion and yet this campaign and the president S Administration has been dominated by this investigation into what turns out to be completely baseless. These irregularities, these statements, these omissions were not satisfactor satisfactorily. I think that leaves open the possibility to infer bad faith. Im a bill barr fan. I think we need an explanation for what exactly happened here. Theres testimony scheduled for late next month for the Senate Judiciary committee, but the issue here is on one hand you have roger stone who is this sleazy figure who committed crimes and should go to prison. I think theres a case to be made that, yes, there was witness tampering. Thats a very serious matter. But nine years is draconian. Thats a fair point. The underlying issue is the appearance of president ial pressure on the department of justice, then creating an outcome in a way that shouldnt happen, and its an unavoidable problem and its an avoidable error.
