We could absolutely call a National Emergency because of the security of our country. Absolutely. No, we can do it. I havent done it. I may do it. I may do it. But we can call a National Emergency and build it very quickly. President trump today on the heels of a two hour meeting with democrats here at the white house. We just completed a lengthy and sometimes contentious conversation with the president. We had a very, very productive meeting. Two via points of a very important meeting with a singular purpose, to enter personal partial government sh. Im not saying it was it easy, kind, or nice meeting but in the end, we come a long way. We will be working very heart of the weekend. The second such gathering from leaders from both parties and an end the situation room. While neither side which are specifics about the conversation, the consensus was that there is more work to be done. The southern border is a dangerous, horrible disaster. We have a disagreement on the refusal of the president to open up the government. With the impasse now in 14 days and counting, the prospects of a quick solution seem considerably murky at best. Its very hard to see how progress will be made unless they open up the government. I think i can speak for republicans in the house and republicans in the senate. They feel very strongly about having a safe country, having a border that makes sense. Without borders, ive said it many times, we dont have a country. I hope it does not go on even beyond a few more days. And the meetings, bret, continue to mile, both at 11 00 at 1 00, including the Vice President mike pence as they try to end the impasse. Of another quick note, Senior Administration officials are said to receive 10,000 annual raises beginning tomorrow, and while today the Vice President said he would turn down his raise, the president said he would consider asking other senior officials to follow suit. And that is something and he himself said they are trying to get some clarity on how far he can go with this. Bret and whether it is moving money from one pot to another or whether it is actually having the military build a wall. There is a lot of questions about what exactly that would mean, at least clearly indicating that he wants to do negotiated way out. Also, what constitutes a National Emergency . These Emergency Powers that are really sort of murky here. Bret here is a Senate Minority leader and majority leader today. We made a plea to the president once again dont hold millions of americans, hundreds of thousands of workers hostage. Open up the government and lets continue the discussions. I think if you look at the dynamics of where we are right now, you have a very energized Democrat Party. They came back into power, they taken over the house, and just the dynamics in washington i think are in our favor. So what could the president do . Do to not to make the party be moralized . That would be to cave on this. I think he has to stick to his guns, where he is. And if he sticks it out, for me, the breaking point from what i am looking at is, what happens when things like tsa workers started to walk or what happens for the people who are for 2020, moderate republicans, when do they say, enough is enough. I think of the president s understanding with his base especially after what happened in december, but how long can you keep the coalitions together is my question. Bret some tsa workers are calling in sick, pretty big numbers. The real deadline may become a vibrant, next friday, where thee scheduled to go out, and that is kind of an internal deadline. It is. I still think semantics will play a role in the way those is resolved somehow. The democrats have been so strong against a wall, nancy pelosi again called it and immorality. But they are not so opposed to what they call enhanced fencing. There has got to be a way that they could come together on enhancing the fencing, either extending the 405 miles of pedestrian fencing that currently exists on the border, or strengthening some of the shoddy fencing that exists in places. Bret apparently senator Lindsey Graham is working with others to cobble together something dealing with the dreamers, dealing with something else, a lot of questions about that today as well. You mentioned impeachment by the president said during this meeting a nancy pelosi told him, we are not looking to impeach you. He went on to say, you cant impeach people who are doing such a great job. There are people obviously in the Democratic Caucus looking to impeach the president , one of them, a freshman congresswoman who caused a stir. We are going to go in there, we are going to [bleep] i dont think we should make a big deal of it. Words have a words weigh a ton. The president has to realize that his words weigh a ton, too. Words have a direct impact on peoples lives. My colleagues comment do not have an impact on peoples lives nwords have a direct impact on i thought it was a great dishonor to her and her family. I thought it was highly disrespectful to the United States of america. Congresswoman Rashida Tliab tweeted, i will always speak truth to power on the part of unapologetically me. This is about all of us in the face of the constitutional crisis. We must rise. Karen . Shes discussing the issue of impeachment. And do that, she managed to use the queen of all vulgarities. I think this is probably a learning experience for a freshman congresswoman, which is the cameras and the recordings are always out there. But nancy pelosi has an issue here, too, and that she wants to tamp down this impeachment talk. Anyone who lived through the last time this city went through impeachment knows that this was something that ended up really biting the republicans and the public tolerance for that the public belief that it should be used in very, very rare circumstances and not as a substitute for election results. Bret there is a fight in the Democratic Caucus on its very issue, and if the speaker did say that the president , we are not looking to impeach you, there would be some pushback on the Progressive Side of her party. Absolutely. That is where the energy is. If there was a test today in terms of what will the Democrat Party take in terms of their tone and rhetoric going into 2020, nancy pelosi failed that test, not that she didnt condemn one of the worst and loudest voices. Elijah cummings, congressman, did. He did condemn us on twitter and said this is not the kind of language we should be using, and if you actually want to prevent the sort of impeachment talk, you should be taking the Elijah Cummings route, not making the same mistakes nancy pelosi did today. Bret lets not sugarcoat it for the president uses salty language quite a bit. Hes not exactly holierthanthou when it comes to his rhetoric. There are two parts of the issue. One with the vulgarity, and the other was the actual issue of impeachment. On the vulgarity, the republicans kind of stood up and clutched their pearls and acted all hard, like this was the worst thing anybody has ever said. On the democrats, we have polls, a lot of polls showing that 75 plus percent of democratic voters, of the base, want the party to impeach donald trump now. There was a test vote on it last year on a procedural vote on impeachment articles, 66 members of the house voted yes. Dont you think that would be more now .
