Sexual assault in high school has been told she must make up her mind about testifying to the Senate Judiciary committee by friday. Fort has apparently gone back on her original offer to talk, now insisting on an fbi investigation first. With that fox team coverage, john roberts it in the white house with what President Trump is saying all of this. And Catherine Herridge here in the bureau with the fbi role in the controversy. We begin with chief Congressional Correspondent mike emanuel. A Firm Response tenet from the head of the Judiciary Committee. Good evening. Fox news can confirm reports that one of Brett Kavanaughs classmates, an attorney representing him, has sent a letter to the Judiciary Committee saying his client, kavanaughs classmate was not of any party in question as lawmakers here try to get to the bottom of this allegation. Judiciary chairman republican Chuck Grassley is Still Holding out hope professor Christine Ford will speak of his committee on monday. But hes not willing to draw this out much longer. Advising her attorneys they are on the clock writing prepared testimony and biography are due to the committee by 10 00 a. M. On friday september 21. If she intends to testify on monday. Hes even willing to send Committee Staff to california if she wants to avoid the bright lights of a congressional hearing. Where im focused right now is doing everything that we can to make dr. Ford comfortable with coming before it committee either in an open session or closed session or a public or a private interview. Two critical g. O. P. Votes on the cabin on nomination, the jeff flake of arizona and Susan Collins of maine sent tweets strongly encouraging her to reconsider. South Carolina Republican senator lindsey graham, a judiciary member, called her demands politics. Requiring an fbi investigation of a 36yearold allegation without specific references to time or location before professor ford will appear before the Judiciary Committee is not about finding the truth, but delaying the process until after the midterm elections. On monday, professor fords attorney told the world are client was ready to talk. She is. Shes willing to do whatever it takes to get her story forth. My client will do whatever is necessary to make sure that the Senate Judiciary committee has the full story. Shes willing to cooperate. Which is not willing to do is be part of this bloodletting that happens in washington. New york democrats, senator Kirsten Gillibrand says republicans are treating professor ford unfairly. I believe what she says. It rings true to me. How she has divulged it, who she is divulged it to overtime, over many years. Thats exactly what happens when someone has this kind of trauma. So it rings true. A number of republican senators say chairman grassley has made an offer in good faith for professor ford to testify in public or in private. If she declines, those members sound ready to vote. Shannon mike emanuel live on the hill, thank you very much. And we just got another letter, this one is to the Ranking Member senator Dianne Feinstein. This comes from the chairman. He is asking for an unredacted copy of the original letter that she got in july from dr. Ford, the accuser of judge kavanaugh. He says you receive this letter approximately seven weeks ago but the contents only week mike late last week when it appeared the senate was about to confirm judge kavanaugh. It grassley says made repeated requests from feinstein and from her staff. He says i expect to get a copy of the original unredacted letter immediately, the backandforth continues. More on that with the panel. In the meantime President Trump is insisting he wants her to testify but is apparently not willing to grant her wish for an fbi investigation. Chief correspondent john roberts has that part of the story tonight. Good evening, john. Good evening to you. It may change in the days ahead but currently the answer to whether President Trump will ask for the fbi to launch an investigation into the allegations against judge kavanaugh is no. If and while it is still unclear whether there will even be a hearing on monday, judge kavanaugh is making preparations to be there. Sources tell fox news that judge kavanaugh went through a socalled murder board here at the white house yesterday. A prep session where he was peppered with questions about the alleged incident. Sources say he did well in the session, that he was solid, there was no wavering. If leaving the white house for the storm ravaged carolinas, President Trump for the first time indicated for the moment at least he believes Brett Kavanaugh over the judges accuser Christine Blasey ford. If she shows up and makes a credible showing, that will be very interesting. Will have to make a decision. But i can only say this, he is such an outstanding man, very hard for me to imagine that anything happened. President trump could ask for the fbi to develop more information about the information incident but before sources tell fox news there is no impetus to do that and any investigation should fall under the senates advice and consent role. I would let the senators take it. I really want to see her. I really would want to see what she has to say. But i want to give it all the time they need. The president might think that the senate is doing a good job, but he appears to feel the opposite about his attorney general Jeff Sessions, telling the hill he doesnt have an attorney general. This morning he walked that back a bit. Im disappointed in the attorney general for numerous reasons. But we have an attorney general. Washington is abuzz with rumors that sessions will be gone after the midterms. When asked today if he plans to fire sessions, President Trump didnt say no. We are looking at lots of different things. I have a great cabinet. President trump also waited for the first time on Paul Manaforts guilty plea and cooperation deal he signed with special counsel robert mueller. The president asked if he is worried what manafort might tell mueller. Im not. If he is honest, and he is, i think hes going to tell as long as he tells the truth its 100 . But i dont want to talk about it now. And amid charges of abuse of power and jeopardizing secret sources, President Trump defended his decision to declassify documents in the russia investigation and Text Messages of fbi and Justice Department officials. The president telling the hill i hope to be able to put this up as one of my crowning achievements that i was able to expose something that is truly a cancer in our country. President trump is still being sensitive to Christine Blasey fords accusations. He is taking aim at democrats in a very sharp way for how they are handling it tweeting this morning the Supreme Court is one of the main reasons i got elected president. I hope Republican Voters and others are watching and studying the democrats playbook. Shannon. Shannon john roberts lie from the white house. Thank you very much, john. Right now we look deeper into where the fbi actually fits in all of this. Chief intelligence correspondent Catherine Herridge tells us what shes learned. There is no way that we should have this hearing without having a full fair investigation. Senate democrats want an fbi probe and now the accuser does too. No investigation, any legitimate investigation is going to happen between now and monday. But the president suggests it wont happen. Theyve investigated about six times before and it seems they dont do that. The fbi does background checks and criminal investigations. While there are allegations of Sexual Assault more than three decades ago former agents tell fox news there are no allegations of a federal crime to the fbi would not open a criminal probe. At the bureau does background checks for nominees and could do followup for the requesting agency, in this case the white house. Greg handled nominations for the Senate Judiciary committee. The fbis role in this process is to essentially surface allegations like this for the senate. Simply start things up for the Senate Investigators to consider and for the senate to weigh along with all the other evidence. Christine blasey ford alleges she was sexually assaulted at a party in the early 80s by Brett Kavanaugh when both were teenagers. With no new evidence, legal experts said it will go forward. They will try to go out and try to find witnesses to corroborate either her story or his story and after 30 years its almost impossible to do that. 11th hour allegations were also leveled with 30 years ago, Clarence Thomas, this time by a former colleague, who is again speaking out. Absolutely is the right move. The hearing questions need to have a frame and the investigation is the best frame for that. A neutral investigation that can pull together the facts. The former Senate Judiciary Committee Staffer said the facts in the anita hill case were very different. The fbi conducted a handful of interviews and not a fullblown investigation. Shannon very helpful, thank you. President trump is telling people affected by Hurricane Florence that america grieves with them. The president was on the ground today in north and South Carolina praising First Responders and encouraging those who suffer losses from a storm now being called epic. Rick leventhal is in wilmington, North Carolina, again today. Hello. Good evening, shannon. Its been a long and busy day for the president , who was already back in the white house after multiple stops in North Carolina and in South Carolina where he says the coordination between agencies has been incredible and he promises that the help is here to stay. President trump with North Carolina governor roy cooper handing out hot meals and speaking with weary residents at a relief distribution point in new bern, one of many towns swamped by Hurricane Florence. The president made several stops in north and South Carolina battling to recover from heavy rains and unprecedented floodin flooding. Hurricane florence was one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the carolinas. One of the most powerful and devastating storms ever to hit our country. To the families who have lost loved ones, america grieves with you. Despite the sunshine, some rivers may not crest until early next week. Countless homes and businesses are underwater. It more than thousand roads are blocked. More than 3,000 people have been rescued along with hundreds of pets, but more than three dozen people were killed and roughly 150,000 customers are living without power. And the floodwater could pose a health crisis, some of it contaminated by sewage plants and hog waste lagoons overrun by the rising tide. Nearly three and a half million chickens were lost and thousands of hogs with more valuable livestock and forms in water or threatened by it. Are people are still reeling. We have farmers who have lost significantly their crops. A lot of businesses are down. And of course people have lost their homes. After a 90 minute chopper ride the president toward conway, one of South Carolinas hardest hit towns. We have only not record amounts that have dropped in South Carolina, particularly in this third of the state, but we have the water coming down from North Carolina, so the rain in the water that you see out there now is just the beginning. If the worst you have to come. In fact there were two coke in South Carolina last night. Two women, Mental Health detainees who were shackled in the back of a police man being transported by court order into floodwaters and thats when the van got soaked, two deputies managed to get out of the van but say they couldnt for the women because they couldnt get the doors open in the high waters. If they were eventually plucked off the top of the van by a High Water Rescue Team but the women perished. A grim reminder that the dangers still remain here with some rivers, including the Cape Fear River here not expected to crest until early next week. Shannon a very important warning, rick, thank you very much. Up next, bret baier and the Prime Minister of georgia on President Trump, russia and nato. Tonight bret baier talks to one of those leaders was already here in the u. S. Georgian Prime Minister mamuka bakhtadze. Thank you. Joining us now, the Prime Minister of georgia. Thank you for being here. Hi. Bret meeting her with officials in washington. A longstanding relationship with the u. S. Tell me about that relationship now with the administration. Thank you, bret. Firstly i would like to express my deep condolences to the victims of Hurricane Florence. Under President Trumps administration u. S. Georgia Security Cooperation is enhancing. It has never been as strong as it is now and we truly appreciate this. Bret it you have, obviously, an issue with russia. Russia occupies part of your country. How much as of now . Unfortunately, russia has occupied 20 of our territory and it still continues its aggression towards georgia. Many georgians had to leave their homes. If so russia occupies two historical regions of georgia. We are committed to the peaceful resolution of this conflict. Unfortunately russia is trying again to undermined our peaceful initiatives. Bret President Trumps critics here in the u. S. Argue that he and his administration have not been tough enough against russia. From your point of view, do you think that this administration is . We are very much encouraged with the President Trumps decision to have a dialogue with russia. Because there is no alternative to dialogue. But of course we should take into consideration the original context as well because turbulence is growing. But direct interruption with russia on the highest level possible i think is really very positive and fruitful. Bret youre in your new job, but from your knowledge of the last administration here in the u. S. Dealt with georgia and now this one date, can you give some perspective to people . In the last two years with the common efforts, we pushed this relationship to another level and it is on the alltime high level now. We truly appreciate this initiatives of President Trump and his administration to be engaged with georgia. Bret one of your Foreign Policy goals is to have georgia join nato. It doesnt seem like thats possible in the current construct with 20 of your country occupied by russia. Are there ways around that . The territorial integrity surrounding georgia is a redline for us. Historically both regions are part of our state. The membership of nato is our main priority. We are actually continuously punching above our weight. Although our economy is not large, we are spending more than 2 of our gdp for military. Our relationship with the United States and our friendship, i would say, is tested. Our soldiers shoulder to shoulder or fighting International Terrorism in afghanistan and in iraq. We are the largest per capita contributor to these international missions. So we are very serious about this. Bret there are people in the u. S. Who worry about article five of nato and that the u. S. Could be drawn in to world war iii because of russias actions, frankly. Do you say to those people who are concerned about that . If georgia joins nato, this will make our region much more protectable and sustainable, which is in the best interest of russia. Bret you are going to spend a couple days. Meeting with officials in washington and then you will go to the u. N. For the General Assembly meeting. If you have a message for the American People from your country, what is it . We pushed to another level of cooperation in the field of security and military cooperation. And we have also very good economic operation and we believe that if we trade, agreement can be very good step forward. Georgia is a gateway foreign countries, five states from central asia. This is one of the Fastest Growing consumer markets in the world. We would like to see more American Companies doing business in georgia. Bret mr. Prime minister, we appreciate your time. Shannon President Trumps promising people impacted by Hurricane Florence he is with them 100 . The president was in North Carolina and South Carolina this afternoon to see the damage for himself and theres still plenty to see, including several rivers at or near major flood stage. Lets get more on that sunlight from correspondent Leland Vittert on the ground in North Carolina. Shannon, good evening to you. We may be and one of the most dangerous parts of Hurricane Florences path through North Carolina. At the water is now rising in the minute, meaning roads that were once dry are now impassable and very, very deadly. We were here as paramedics were trying to make it to a Field Hospital got waylaid. The only reason they made it across was there were some volunteers with an Army Surplus Jeep that were able to drive them and create a wake of sorts through this high water. At those volunteers told us another foot or so and even they wouldnt be able to make it. The biggest problem is especially in that much water, we even cant see whats in front of us because its too deep and if the road got washed out or Something Like that we could fall off. We could fall off that cliff. We need to be very careful with where we are at. We can make sure where we see where were going. We know that its safe for us to be able to pull through. One local told me that they thought the water was going up about 6 inches an hour here. This is one of the major east eastwest highways across North Carolina. If the high water is making it very difficult for supplies to get to where they need to become a shannon. Its a race against time for the state Highway Patrol here. They are trying to close all these highways. Deadly consequences way too many times. He shannon the National Hurricane center says that one of the biggest causes of death is the aftermath and that standing water. Thank you very much. At the leaders of north and south korea say the agreement they reached at this weeks summit are a major step towards peace on the peninsula, but not everyone is so sure. Greg palkot tells us why. Signing up for peace in pyongyang, thats at least on north Korean Leader kim jong un and south korean president moon jaein put it. We have promised to make the Korean Peninsula of the land of peace without Nuclear Weapons and nuclear threats. For the first time, south and north korea agreed on a specific step towards denuclearization. If it is a very meaningful achievement. Kim pledged to allow foreign experts to observe the permanent dismantle which of launch and test sites and said he would get rid of a key Nuclear Production facility if the u. S. Took corresponding measures. Prior to becoming president it looked like we were going to war with north korea and now we have a lot of progress. Still, kim already promised President Trump he would ditch the missile site he said in june. Other launch facilities and Nuclear Reduction plans in the north. The North Koreans continue to produce material and they are refurbishing various sites. I think we have to be very careful about the big hoopla surrounding the latest statements from north korea. Experts they came once the u. S. To agree to a declaration of the end of the korean war. And he made no mention of what the u. S. Wants an accounting of the norths Nuclear Missile arsenal. Still, there is some progress. Was important for us is to continue to say thats a good step. Thats not the instate. Probably more impressive, measure to improve interkorean time, including making the Demilitarized Zone between the two countries less demilitarized, a visit by kim to sole and joint bid for the 2032 summer olympics. Late today secretary of state pompeo said in a statement he welcomes the successful outcome of the summit and looks forward to wrapping up denuclearization as suggested earlier by chairman kim, by january 2021. The confirmation process is over. Im not being critical, and being factual when i say this is an 11th hour allegation. I really want to see her. I really would want to see what she has to say. But i want to give it all the time they need. Theyve already given it time. Theyve delayed a major hearing. Shannon where are we now . Lets bring in our panel, byron york, chief Political Correspondent of the washington examiner. Karen tumulty, opinion writer for the Washington Post, and tim farley, sirius xm radio. Welcome to all of you. This tweet from the president this morning. He said this. If the Supreme Court is one of the main reasons i got elected president. It i hope Republican Voters and others are watching and studying the democrats playbook. Our exit polling showed that this was one of the key issues and it seems like hes been very measured and disciplined in this process. A much different President Trump than with many other issues but i think what we saw today is we are dealing with the fallout from kind of a crazy night last night where what letters were exchanged, people went on television and Christine Ford essentially sent out her lawyers to say she would not appear at this hearing on wednesday unless there were an fbi investigation, which republicans say they wont do. So what we have seen since then as the republicans who were wavering on this thing, bob corker, jeff flake, Susan Collins and lisa murkowski, but especially corker and flake have said we need to have a hearing on monday. If she doesnt show up and were just going to go ahead and vote. And even Susan Collins is saying please, please, dr. Four, show up. So i think youve seen the republicans who were kind of threatening to move away from the party on this begin to come back to the party on this. Shannon ive heard from a lot of g. O. P. Sources saying actually all of the heat and the persuasion in the ads and everything, the vulgar threats against collins office, all those things have come against her and her staff has really pushed her more into the arms of the g. O. P. If shes trying to be fair here but now starting to feel like she doesnt want to be part of the delay process necessarily. My understanding of what dr. Ford has said, i dont think shes definitively said she wont show up if there isnt an fbi investigation. The thing i think we all need to remember is that we still have four and a half days until monday and the way the new cycle works in these times, this whole thing is probably going to take five or six twists and turns. Shannon tonight. And there may be other people coming out of the woodwork either to verify what judge kavanaugh is saying, or to back up what she is saying. By monday this could look like a very different situation. Shannon as you note, with got a lot of pushback from her lawyers saying she needs a full investigation, its not fair for the committee to move forward without that, but the blanket statement, theres no way she shows up on monday. Jonathan turley, a wellregarded law professor across the board. He says this. Fords demand is to put it simply out of line. Theres no precedent for a quid pro quo demand for testimony by a witness. Individuals can certainly refuse to testify, get conditioning testimony is well beyond the provenance of any witness. Fort has every right to expect to be heard on the very serious allegations. She does not have the right to set conditions before testifying under oath. As karen said, she hasnt definitively said shes not going to show up, so shes making that for the opening into a bargain. He really could have an investigation. The Clarence Thomas anita Hill Division was three days. You could do this. I think republicans are looking at this as an opportunity to have another Supreme Court justice and thats the goal. Mitch mcconnell has made it clear judicial appointment or what he wants. In this case i think the audience is really the audience of one, the one republican, jeff flake, whos been on the fence, if you will. And with him, if he is convinced that her not showing up is going to be the case, hes going to have then it gets to the full senate and i think at that point all republicans would vote. It would be strictly republican. It may be a couple of democrats, im not sure. But at that point and they can get the Supreme Court justice and the politics of the midterms be damned because we got another Supreme Court justice, look at us. Shannon a conversation about which spaces more motivated in the left being so upset about the president can potentially others. Its a crapshoot anyway. The house is probably going to democrats. The senate is up in the air. If you get a Supreme Court justice confirmed before the midterms you are not going to take a chance, you will already have it done. Shannon this is what anita hill had to say about what she thinks needs to happen here. My advice is to push the pause button on this hearing, get the information together, bring in the experts, and put together a hearing that is fair, that is impartial, that is not biased by politics and bring this information to the american public. Shannon the calls are for the fbi to get involved with this. They are saying thats not what we do, we prepare the file, we give it to the white house. Both the democrats and the republicans have their own staff of investigators. Both could be involved in this process. Grassley has said we will send our people to dr. Ford wherever she wants to tell the story so she doesnt have to come here. He says the democrats arent cooperating with that. They have their own investigators. They could do it themselves together or separately. The democrats on the committee have staff investigators. They could start an investigation, and by the way, the Judiciary Committee gets special funds specifically to bulk up the staff temporarily to handle Supreme Court nomination. If there is the money to do it. They can go out there, presumably if the democratic staff could talk to Christine Ford and the witnesses they cant talk to. Not going to talk to anybody it appears. So they could possibly shake loose some information and, believe me, the press would be interested in anything that they could discover. Shannon weve got a couple of letters in the last hour. We have a very lengthy letter from the chairman to all the Democrat Members and what he said in the very end is theres been delay and obstruction of this process at every turn and with every argument available. Therefore i will view any additional complaints about the process very skeptically. He outlines exactly what they tried to get done. He also sent this letter to the Ranking Member, Dianne Feinstein and basically said to her eye want to see this letter and i think is trying to figure out how exactly it got leaked, which seems to be a bit of a mystery how her name ended up in the public sphere. No ones pointed the finger. It ended up in the public sphere because she came to the Washington Post very shannon prior to that i mean. The incident was in the public sphere, but it was only after she, according to our reporting, really agonized over much of the summer as to whether she would actually put her name to this allegation. And can i just say, i have dealt with stories like this, some of which ive written about at some of which i havent written about, and that is very typical, very often as a journalist, and i assume the same thing happens in this kind of setting, somebody will come to you and they will Say Something happened, i would like to talk to you confidentially about it. This is not an unusual kind of process. Shannon sometimes your best stories you are never able to take public because of peoples Comfort Level with that. Thank you very much. Stick around. Next up, the president says he doesnt have an attorney genera general. Quick, the quicker picker upper bounty picks up messes quicker and is 2x more absorbent. Bounty, the quicker picker upper. Everybody wants more for their kids, but i feel like with my kids, they measurably get more than i ever got. And i get to do that. I get to provide that for them. Am disappointed in the attorney general for many reasons, and you understand that. Jeff sessions has done a fine job. Hes an honorable man. Replacing him before the election for me would be a nonstarter. Im a big supporter of Jeff Sessions, i hope he stays right where he is. Shannon we are back with our panel. The president said essentially this morning this. I dont have an attorney general. Its very sad. Im not happy at the border, im not happy with numerous things, not just this. Its just like polly in goodfellas, now ive got to walk away. I thought Jeff Sessions kind of took a chance when he endorsed President Trump when it started and President Trump is not returning the respects. Its a lot of frustration that the president has. I think senator mcconnell, that piece that you played, that something he said repeatedly. I believe that Jeff Sessions is safe until the midterm elections. Afterwards it will be two years. It wouldnt be unusual for an attorney general change but clearly President Trump i dont know what he thinks, if maybe Rod Rosenstein becomes an even better ally if he gets elevated to that position, but what it also tells me is that its very close to the picture we get painted by bob woodward in the book. If the president sitting around complaining that Jeff Sessions has a stupid hick southern accent at some of the stories that he tells. It sort of makes that ring true. But it cant be fun at the sessions house old every night to have to deal with this kind of criticism from a man that you thought you were supporting at great risk to your own political career. Shannon whos going to want the job next . That is a very good question. Because the issues are not going to go away. You can assume that Jeff Sessions thinks hes staying there because hes getting some things done on immigration, marijuana policy, things that he cares about. I think Jeff Sessions is going to have a really big book deal after this is all over. Shannon and we will all be fighting for the exclusive interview with him. Meanwhile, on the broader scope about the fbi, the president also said this, i hope to be able to put this up as one of my crowning achievements, that i was able to expose something that is truly a cancer in our country. You were talking about the documents that he has ordered declassified which well see at some point. The interesting thing is that the president and congress have kind of been at war with the fbi and the department of justice and the Intelligence Community and it is specifically those agencies that will decide what is blacked out and what is released. I dont think this is going to be a major president ial legacy, but it will tell us quite a bit about how the fbi used the trump dossier in the campaign and i think one other thing to add is we have heard the Intelligence Community and democrats on the hill say before that its x or y were declassified, then it would be a great risk to National Security and peoples lives would be at risk. They said that about the devin nunes memo back in february and it didnt happen so i think theres a real possibility is not going to happen again. I think one of the things we are often about President Trump is hes most focus on pleasing his base. His base doesnt like Jeff Sessions because of the fact that they think is not sufficiently defended the president as attorney general. He stood up for him when he was a sender and as a result of that he cant lose with his base to criticize Jeff Sessions because they just dont like them. Shannon want to make sure we touch on Paul Manafort today because i came up for the president. Made a deal on the charges against him, hes cooperating with the mueller investigation. Heres the two sides on that. Clearly the trump team is terrified about what manafort may have to say. Of hes got manafort trying to get money from this russian oligarch. If the president s son trying to get dirt from the russians in trump tower. Paul manafort was with me for a short period of time. I believe that he will tell the truth. And if he tells the truth, no problem. Shannon karen, the back and forth over mr. Manafort as he awaits sentencing. First of all, he was with him for a fairly long time and he was the campaign chairman. I think this is the president signaling to Paul Manafort the fact is that a president ial pardon is still not entirely out of the question. So i think this is another story that we will see a lot of twists and turns with before its over. Shannon these charges, all of them in both predate his time with the president and dont deal with any allegations of collusion during his time. In the discussion, this manafort plea was a huge setback for trump is based on the idea that manafort has some sort of information on trump that only he, manafort, has, that now will blow this case wide open and i think its important to remember that mueller has had the cooperation of rick gates, manaforts closest aide through all of his dirty business dealing in the last ten years. And also at the campaign. We have to find out what does manafort know that rick gates didnt already know and tell . Shannon sounded confident in multiple comments. Thank you, panel.
