A weeknight look at the news, featuring interviews, analysis and Panel Discussions hosted by Bret Baier. Policies. Im going to vote for balderson. Why . Because hes a republican and i think trump needs more republicans in washington to clean up the swamp, basically. Im an angry republican. So i have to vote democrat this round. Why are you so angry . Big i think hes embarrassed us in front of the International Community President Trump . President trump has embarrassed us in the International Community polls close in just under 90 minutes, the last special election before the midterms. Lets go to my colleague mike tobin who is covering the primaries in michigan. Hi, mike. Thanks, kiersten. The president is throwing his weight behind a west point grad and combat veteran who flew apache Attack Helicopters in iraq. John jaynes has a lot of momentum behind him. Real clear politics average gives him a edge over his competitor sandy pendley. Very much in line with President Trumps agenda but a Video Surface in which he said the president speaks at a fourth grade level. Says that the quote is out of contacts and that President Trump is smart and a remarkable i would rather have the president s endorsement, but there is only one endorsement that matters and thats the people of michigan. We are encouraged that the president came out and not tweeted about me again because we are doing this for the right things. Folks are Text Messaging and email, the energy is real. Whoever wins has a fight on his hands. Debbie stabenow has 18 years of Name Recognition in michigan. Observers predict the general will be driven by female voters. She has a comparable lead and more money than both of the republican candidates. The president ial endorsement might not count as much in the general as well. Trump did win michigan, but not by much. To dan springer in topeka, kansas. Hey, mike, here in kansas all eyes are on the governors race and the republican primary, a lot of people see this as a microcosm between, within the Republican Party nationally. You have the party establish ended it by the incumbent governor jeff collier. The tenant governor for several years and took over for Sam Brownback in january when he took a position in the trump administration. Hes supported by the state farm bureau, National Rifle association, and the dean of kansas g. O. P. Bob dole, Longtime Senate leader and the present he strikes a more moderate and measured tone. Even running neck and neck with the kansas Secretary Of State fiscal back is aggressively antiillegal immigration. Quoted as being trump before trump was trump. Also forced voters to bring identification to the polls. A federal judge, a federal judge appointed by president bush, struck it down as unconstitutional. Just hours before the polls open, President Trump tweeted his endorsement of chris goldbach. It may move some of his advisors and the Republican Governors Association opposed. But he won kansas by 20 points a couple of years ago. His endorsements have been gold, 9 for 9 in people he backed in late elections. Polls close at 7 00. Shannon . Shannon thank you. In missouri, primary voters are setting up a Key Senate Race with democrat incumbent Claire Mccaskill and republican josh holick considered to be heavy favorites. The righttowork state is also on the ballot in washington state. Well decide candidates and ten congressional races, u. S. Senate seat and dozens of legislative contest. The former righthand man to one time Trump Campaign chairman Paul Manafort is living up to his billing as the star witness in the tax and bank fraud trial. In alexandria, virginia, good evening, peter. Good evening, shannon. We learned tonight that the star witness had a secret. Rick gates testified today he led with the Manna Fort The a secret life which included marital extramarital affair. He quietly attacked his expressed bill filled with personal charges paid for by Paul Manafort. Possible he may have fraudulently submitted personal expenses to the trump inaugural chief White House Correspondent john roberts has that story. Good evening, john. Good evening, shannon. Might talk about it but not right about it. The president s outside Legal Counsel talking about the idea that the interview with the president with Robert Mueller mightve been completed by now and the rational part of the Mueller Investigation mightve been wrapped up by the end of the summer. Instead, it just goes on and on and on. President trumps legal Team Continues to work on a response to Robert Mullers letter of last week laying out his parameters for an interview. Sources tell fox news that the response will be sent to muller until the earliest. The big Sticking Point is a legal teams desire to limit questions, at least oral in person question relation to russia or if there was collusion between the Trump Campaign and russia to try to throw the election. Tom depree, his former assistant attorney general in the bush administration. In person interview with mueller, but the president is telling them to keep talking, keep negotiating to try to reach a deal. One possible compromise, have the president sit down with mueller in person to talk about russia and probably will collusion but stipulate tht questions and answers regarding obstructions be submitted in writing. That gives them time to think about their answers, to craft the right answer, as opposed to a facetoface interaction where, you know, as weve seen a lot, witnesses dont get it right under the pressure of the moment. As President Trumps attorneys complement their next according to the wall street journal, federal prosecutors are investigating cohen for possible tax fraud any have provided false or misleading information to attain bank loans. As far as the interview by Robert Mueller, the odds remain slim that Something Like that would happen and also buttressing that idea is the fact that the sources tell fox news tell rudy jelly and jay sekulow had not had Prep Situations to get ready for a possible interview. Nothing appears to be in a mint at this point. Shannon thank you very much. The California Wildfires are rewriting the states record books. The blazes are visible from space and have combined to become the largest wildfire in state history. Chief correspondent Jonathan Hunt shows us the tonight from los angeles. The fight goes on and on. The Mendocino Complex Fire northwest of sacramento has now consumed a land area the size of los angeles. And fire crews say it will likely be another week until they havent fully contained. And its anybodys guess what that week will bring with triple digit temperatures and bone dry vegetation creating the perfect storm or more fires. 17 large wildfires are now burning across the state, the smoke from some of them can be seen from these images captured from the International Space station. The firestorm continues over tweets from President Trump, implying Climate Change is not the culprit for these more intense fire seasons, but choices made by californias political leaders. In one tweet, mr. Trump wrote, California Wildfires have been magnified and made so much worse by the bad environmental laws which arent allowing massive amounts of readily available water to be properly utilized. It is being diverted into the pacific ocean. Must also tree clear to stop fire from spreading the republican members have complained about environmental protections that have limited spring in the high school in parkland. Liberty what they are not doing is driving the iranians to the negotiating table. Benjamin hall has the latest tonight. Protest against iran continues next week after months of unrest at anger against the regimes faltering economy grew. With the latest sanctions, the situation is near breaking. But the iranians have hours before the latest sanctions hit, president rouhans with the u. S. Despite his offers with no preconditions. In my opinion, what americans are seeking for their psychological warfare is to make iranians hesitant about their country. Since President Trump has withdrawn from the nuclear deal, rouhani said all iran would rely on russia and china to help bolster its oil sectors. Sanctions in place where meaningless, that the u. S. Would first have to apologize and pay compensation. If You Stab Somebody with a knife and you say you want to talks, the first thing you have to do is remove the knife. The ago in tehran, opinion are torn. Some are defiant. I believe america cant do a damn thing, it cant do anything because iranians are backing each other. Others are hoping that they will talk to the u. S. U. S. Sanctions are very effective. The government should find a solution. Fox news has learned there is already talk of the replacement for the iran nuclear pack. Correspondent gillian turner. Looking for the commitment they are looking for fundamental changes in their behavior. State officials confirmed the u. S. Is seeking a new deal with iran in a stark departure from the obama administrations nuclear deal, they say this one aims to be comprehensive. Not just the nuclear program, but the missile program, their support for terrorism, and their maligned regional behavior. One major goal is the trump trumps cutting off the rouhanis regime access to oil, which it uses to fund throughout the mideast. The important lien on the goal is to draw a line in the sand and make European Companies choose side. Many businesses do not want to risk losing business in the United States in order to continue to do business with iran. Some are already falling in line with the u. S. A short while ago, german Multinational Automaker gave a fox news statement that reads in part, we spend our activities in iran until further notice. Financial Sanctions Experts caution the importance of european reactions cannot be overstated. Shannon the government says there are more Jobs Available right now than there are people looking for work. The problem is perfectly evident in the trucking industry. Correspondent kevin corke tells us why. Its not a glamorous job like, you know, an actor or a doctor, or somebody like that. But its actually a very good job. For alan boyd, trucking is more than a way to make a good living. Its a way of life. Ive been in the industry for 38 years. He got into it when i was 18 years old. My dad is a truck driver. My older brother is a truck driver. People like alan are becoming increasingly difficult to find. For the trucking industry, its an especially acute problem. Since 2012, the need for more truckers in america has risen steadily, driven in part by Industry Growth and the wave of retirements in the field where the average age is 49. Advocates now believe the industry will need close to 900,000 new drivers over the next ten years. Thats about 90,000 jobs a year. A critical shortage for americas supply chain for over 70 of sumer , Consumer Goods are moved on the highways. What happens is if you are short truck drivers, the natural reaction is to increase pay to get more people in the industry. If you do that, you are going to put more cost in the supply chain and you and i will eventually see that at the stor store. With rising costs recently passed along to consumers, schools like cds tractortrailer are trying to fill the demand. Ive been in the business for 31 years. Theres always a driver need, this is the worst sense of urgency ive seen for the need of drivers. On the road, alan boyd keeps trucking on and is counting the miles and his blessings. Its a good way to provide for your family. I provided for my family a lot of years. Its a good job. Current federal guidelines requires truckers to be at least 21 years of age, but a new trump and Administration Pilot program could soon allow drivers as young as 18 to haul big loads across state lines. Shannon . Shannon kevin corke, thank you very much. Immigration prosecutions are way up. Critics of the administrations crackdown on the southern border those are coming at the expense of enforcing other laws. National correspondent William La Jeunesse the what the numbers say tonight from los angeles. Every president has priorities, and in 2012 obama exercised his. Individuals who did not present a risk to National Security or Public Safety will be able to request temporary relief from deportation. Six years later, we are stuck with these horrible laws. If you cross the border unlawfully, then we will prosecute you. Under the president s zero tolerance policy, prosecutors in june charged 46 of those detained at the border. That Syracuse University study found the Immigration Caseload overwhelming u. S. Attorneys with the odds of being prosecuted for many federal offenses declining. My thoughts are that we have a terrible problem with departments that were not ready. Of all cases filed by the five u. S. Attorneys on the southwest border, 86 in march involved immigration. By june, 94 . Meaning out of roughly 12,000 prosecutions, more than 11,000 involved legal entry, harboring illegal alien, delmas, or document fraud. That means its consuming 94 of the resources of the office. Thats completely wrong. Pete nunez has spent 15 years as a federal prosecutor. You could have a situation where 1two u. S. Attorneys are handling ten, 15, 20 cases at a time, which all plead guilty within a day or so. The syracuse study found dash critics saying zero tolerance doesnt work. Has done nothing to make us more safe. President s clinton, bush, obama, and val trump have tried to use prosecution to deter illegal immigration. In your report says that it does not deter families trying to ene u. S. Shannon the prosecutions star witness takes the stand at the trial of former Trump Campaign chairman. High cholesterol and weight gain; high blood sugar, which can lead to coma or death; decreased white blood cells, which can be fatal; dizziness upon standing; falls; seizures; impaired judgment; heat sensitivity; and trouble swallowing may occur. Youre more than just your bipolar i. Ask about vraylar. Its not a witch hunt when some of the most senior members of the Trump Campaign have been indicted. Paul manafort has been charged with conspiracy to commit fraud against the United States of america. This trial does not allege facts that the government says occurred during the time that Paul Manafort was the campaign manager. Really, this trial has zero to do with donald trump the person or donald trump the president. Shannon a lot of folks are conflating the two so lets talk about it with our panel. Charles lane, pinion writer for the washington post. Tom evan, Real Clear Politics cofounder and president. Welcome to all of you. These are smart folds, firemen, talking about this trial what it is or what it isnt about. Are any of them connected to russian collusion . There is one crime alleged that has to do during Paul Manaforts time with the Trump Campaign. Basically it was manafort, he was broke, he was going loan to loan, trying to get a loan to a small bank from chicago. He wanted to give the head of a bank a position on the president s Economic Advisor council which he did do, and said he would have a big position in the administration which he did not get. That is the only thing that occurred at the time that manna for was with the trauma campaign. The bigger issue, of course, this socalled trump Russia Investigation and it has nothing to do with the collusion to influence the election. Shannon we are learning a lot, charles, we are hearing a lot of juicy, salacious details where gates is the key witness. He took a plea deal, a partner with manafort. Asking him about his secret life, him stealing money from manafort. Will it be enough for the defense to discredit him against all these charges for manafort . I dont know. Its a dilemma anytime youre using a flipped witness to make your case. Because obviously hes guilty of something. Otherwise the government could have procured the testimony. The first question right Out Of The Box from the defense is in effect, okay, you are lying then. Are you lying now . Who can we believe, how can we believe you. What was especially, i think, damaging to rick gates today and surprisingly so to me because it was a surprise to everyone is this business of an affair and keeping an apartment in london leading a parallel life. Thats important to the defenses case because manaforts whole contention is this is a guy who keeps secrets from people close to him. I didnt know he was doing all this tax evasion and so on. It was all his idea. I think for the first time today on crossexamination, defense really scored some points in the trial. In addition to talking about the affair, which gates is not looking forward to, he had to know it was coming. That manafort would classify a Wire Transfer as loans to get taxable income. Gates used an electronic signature template of manafort is signature and got it to wire accounts from cyprus directly to high end u. S. Vendors to avoid reporting the income on the manaforts taxes. There are others in community deals they can be pretty damning for manafort as well. Because his credibility has been shattered, where is the evidence, where is the proof that he knew this . Email presented today where manafort said, hey, wtf, i was blindsided by this. Rick gates was operating on his own. I think its really incumbent now on the prosecution to produce the evidence that proves, because rick gates word at this point will be not good enough for a convention convic. That is not been a positive develop in for him this week. This is all going along against the backdrop of the president s legal team talking about whether or not hes going to sit down with mueller. A little bit what they were negotiating last week. Mueller agreed to reduce the overall questions from the original list of 49, he would accept some answers in writing, but he still wants to ask those questions regarding Obstruction Of Justice and the president s team said, you can charge them of that crime. Even if he did, you can charge him. Maybe this is the idea, but obviously trump is getting advice every day, dont talk to mueller. Dont get in there and expose yourself in this interview. There is this option of answering questions in writing which has been talked about for a long time. There are pluses and minuses for that too. The president , it seems to me, does have a case if he says, look, i will talk to you about stuff that happened before i became a president , but things are different after i became president. I do not have to talk to you about those stuff. This has been going on for so long. I imagine it will be going on for quite a while more. Shannon probably not going to wrap up after the midterms which is the key to this. Thomas depree talked about this idea of the negotiation of the president answering on paper versus in person. The president obviously would like to do some things in writing. That gives them time to think about their answer, craft the right answer as opposed to a facetoface interaction as weve seen a lot witnesses dont quite get it right under the pressure of the moment. Shannon i used to be an attorney. Wed used to go through these interrogatories and it be so savory to put this on paper and have time. This president likes the challenge of going headtohead with muellers team. If you do it on paper, its more like a civil lawsuit which is under your control. Less in the moment and adversarial. Of course that would be to their advantage. I agree with you, though, President Trump seems to be a difficult client to restrain, you know . He seems to want to make an outburst every couple of seconds. Speaking of people with credibility issues, hes one of them. He said various Different Things from one time to the next and once he gets going in a conversation with Robert Mueller no matter how well prepared he would be, they would be huge risk that he would blunder into saying something that could be shown to be untrue later on and that would be disastrous. Shannon that is what his team is worried about, but hes the president. Hell make his own decisions. He will in the end but he does trust giuliani and the folks around him. Rudy said something interesting. Our answers are already out there. The Special Counsel doesnt need this. That tells me they arent going to be meeting with him in person anytime soon. This idea of the president has that would crumble if you were in front of the prosecutor a total team, hes been in a lot of litigation. Hes been in a lot of depositions. One of the reasons he has some confidence in that is he emerged from most of them relatively unscathed and hes a master of not saying anything if thats what he wants to do. Shannon stakes very high this time. Next up, big Election Night as we move towards the midterms. Now that dream is a reality. Nexium 24hr stops acid before it starts for allday, allnight protection. Can you imagine 24 hours without heartburn . We have an opportunity not to just flip a sleep but to change what happens to working people in this country. If you work for the the reality is we havent had anybody thats had our backs that has fought for us for a couple of decades. I need your vote august 7th. So i can go to conference and represent congress and fight alongside this good man, this gn President Trump to make America Great again shannon big election news tonight. Going to be talking to our panel all throughout the evening. Lets start this race, tom, in ohio. Everybodys watching to see if it will be a precursor. Its been a republican nearly four decades almost exclusively. Tonight, does it Say Something about the midterms . What are you going to watch for . We have a caveat because special elections are special and this was happening first week of august, thats different. Turnout is going to be lower than it would be on election day. Given the history of this district, given the proximity, less than 100 days to the general election, and all the resources being pushed in this race by republicans, yeah, it matters. It matters a lot. If republicans lose their seats, they will be hitting the panic button even harder than they have in some of these races and it well, i think, portend ban things for them coming november especially in the house. Especially in in the senate. Ohio state senator troy balderson, the g. O. P. Candidate. 50 something. Traditional and danny oconnor, i think he is 31. That is the democrats nominee. Charles, people saying this is following a format where this democrat is young, energetic, running to the middle, not promising to oppose the president every turn but saying im going to be a compromise kind of guy. Reminds you of the election in pennsylvania. Whats so interesting about this midterm and its probably the most consequential midterm in recent history. There is so much at stake, so much riding on it. Not only the two parties fighting each other, there are really important battles going on within each party for the ideological soul, the future future policy direction for these parties. In a lot of democratic races or primaries or whatever, we have seen like in new york with Alexandra Acosta cortez shifting the party way to the left, one of the cases where the theory of victory on democratic side, weve got to run to the center, more to the middle. They are in effect, they have effect settled on a district by district strategy, pitching the message to local areas to win the house. If they do win it, then they have to pull all those people together and come up with a unified message and strategy as a caucus in the house. Shannon via written, there are warnings on both sides to not go to the extremes because you have to run in the general, whether democrats or republicans. I want to touch on the kansas governor race, there are six or seven there, but to go primaries everybody is watching tonight, kris kobach and the man who is currently governor, governor colyer. The president support gives you a huge boost and i think its important to win with a large majority as possible to help unite republicans after the primary. If its a very, very close race, it takes longer for people to unite. Shannon the current government on shannon the Current Governor on his endorsement from bob the bob dole. It for me its about a conservative message that gets things done fred bob dole said this himself. Bob dole said jeff colyer is the one guy who can win the general election. Shannon that shows what the polling says now. The republican part of that division. I think weve seen in primaries, most of them, the president has a pretty good bit of mojo. He can actually move results in a primary. But the general election being the bigger problem, and the bigger question for these midterms will be what will be the effect of President Trump on this. After candid candidate quality, thats always huge, and the local issues, this is a big thing. Generally when a president is below 50 approval rating, his party loses some seats and can lose quite a few seats. On the other hand, trump is a man who won the presidency when his personal Disapproval Rating was near 60 . Shannon we have the endorsements of alexandria autopsy of cortez showing up with Senator Sanders a lot of places who is a plus for democrats . Depends on the district. In this way hes like president obama. He molded this electorate, elected. Has his connection with his consistency as obama did to elect himself and reelect himself, in obamas case, potentially trump. The question is can he transfer that the generic republicans around the country . Obama wasnt able to do it in 2010 and 2014. Trump has struggle to do it in the special elections. If he is not able to do it in ohio, in this district, that has been in republic and hands for a long, long time, he wants to campaigns six or seven weeks, i do not know how many candidates want him to come that way if hes not going to motivate the face. We have democrats worrying alexandria ocasiocortez going out and getting involved in the primary races as well. So my she didnt show up in the ohio which goes back to the point i was making. As best as i can understand the democratic strategy and the democrats they are never quite together on strategy, its to pitch the message to the district. She has gone out to a couple of districts in kansas that seymour respective. She i didnt see it. When we come back, oldschool alternative to uber.
