Some American Voters are speaking out in what democrats are touting as a rebuke to the president handing the Democrat Party wins in several states. First here in china President Trump faces a delicate diplomatic dance with chinese president xi jinping trying to get china to help solve the Nuclear Standoff with north korea while also working on a better, fairer trade deal for the u. S. Chief White House Correspondent john roberts is traveling with the president. He is here in beijing and joins me now. Good morning. Bret, good morning. President trump congratulated the chinese president xi jinping with consolidating power in his ruling communist powder becoming the most powerful chinese leader since mae , President Trump arrived in beijing to the splendor of a state visit. An opera performance in the forbidden city. Its north Koreas Nuclear program that will dominate talks today between the president and chinese president xi jinping. I have come here to this peninsula to deliver a message directly to the leader of the north korean dictatorship. Before arriving in china, President Trump had tough words for kim jong un in a speech to south koreas National Assembly. The weapons you are acquiring are not making you safer. They are putting your regime in grave danger. Do not underestimate us. And do not try us. The president laid out a scathing indictment of the north korean regime, branding kim jong un as a criminal dictator. At the same time he was playing the role of bad cough, President Trump was good cop too, offering kim an exit ramp to the escalating crisis. Despite every crime you have committed against god and man, we will offer a path to a much better future. The response from north korea was predictable. The u. S. Must oust the lunatic old man from power and withdraw the hostile policy towards north korea, an official statement said. In order to get rid of the abyss of doom. President clintons secretary of state Madeleine Albright about the speech was on point. I think the statements in his official speech about seeing the advantage of talks is very important. At the same time, pointing out we have a very strong deterrence with three aircraft strike groups in a nuclear submarine. President trump and hoped to send a strong message to north korea and china by standing at the dmz shoulder to shoulder with south koreas president moon jaein. The secret Early Morning trip was scrapped with fog preventing marine one from landing. Still the president hopes to have laid a robust foundation. A strong show of support from chinese president xi jinping can bolster the president s position when hes expected to meet with russian president vladimir putin. That will be at the end of the week, likely tomorrow or saturday at the apec conference in vietnam. Bret a lot a focus on elections last night in the u. S. But the president wanted to commemorate one year ago for his election. The big election, general election. It doesnt often happen that election day falls on the same day but it did. They were losing the g. O. P. Races in virginia and new jerse new jersey. The president s address to the National Assembly in south korea and then tweeting out this picture with the caption congratulation to all of the deplorables and the millions of people who gave us a massive landslide victory. Dont know whether the Election Results from tuesday are a oneoff type thing or if they might be a harbinger of things to come. The president hopes they are not. Bret thank you. As john mentioned, democrats are claiming to have the momentum today after winds up and down the ballot tuesday night. A big win for governor in virginia to history being made at the local level in the commonwealth. Correspondent peter doocy reports from arlington on what it all means. As the political dust settles. Republicans were run out of virginia last night. Democrats say there is more where that came from. Tonight is a wakeup call. Not only did Ralph Northam learn the most votes for governor in virginia history but democrats flipped at least 14 seats, sending the first openly transgender candidate, the first openly lesbian candidate, among others to richmond. You have sent a message across the globe. Donald trump, you dont stand for our values. The democrat who stands to become speaker of the party wins back the house thinks last night will have republicans heading for the exit to avoid a tough political atmosphere. We get the fresh recruits and they get the retirements. We get the ateam. Speak with the governorelect himself said its hard to tell if last night signals the start of the democratic waves. Northam is clear that he wasnt used by National Democratic leaders looking for a highprofile victory. I dont think i had been taken over by the national agenda. I certainly think there were a lot of comments being made. This is about virginia. For all the talk about trump in the wake of northams win, there was none in Ed Gillespies speech. Ive been called to serve. A person familiar with the president s political operation tells fox the president gave gillespie a big boost in the southwest and the president thinks he knows why things didnt go gillespies way. Ed gillespie worked hard but did not embrace me or what i stand for. Dont forget republicans won 4 out of 4 how seats and with the economy doing record and muscular will continue to win even bigger than before. The socalled bannon wing piled on with breitbart calling gillespie a swamp thing. That kind of sentiment can be very damaging to gubernatorial candidates in virginia. I think the virginians are very much independent. They look at washington and they typically dont like what they see in the Nations Capital and they vote the other way in virginia. I think this was a good example of that. It sounds like senators on both sides of the aisle are getting ready to do something ed gillespie never did and thats invite President Trump to their battleground state. Because a g. O. P. Aide tells me tonight that the map for the midterm is pro trump. Even democrats havent been afraid to ride on air force one with him. Bret peter doocy live in arlington, virginia. Thank you. There were other notable first and last night election. New york city mayor bill de blasio easily won a second term, becoming the first democrat to win reelection since ed koch 32 years ago. In new jersey, hobokens first seek mayor seikh mayor. Chris hearst, who was whose girlfriend was shot and killed in 2015 defeated a republican incumbent. Maines republican governor believes voters made a mistake when they voted to expand access to medicaid. Paul lepage has vetoed five attempts by the state legislature to expand the program there. It is the first referendum expansion of medicaid in the country. Karl i, former advisor to President Trump, has been subpoenaed by the Southern District of new york. The Attorneys Office has opened an investigation into activities by icahn at his activities. He was serving as an advisor to the president. Critics said it was a conflict of interest. He stepped down in august. He and his company are cooperating with the investigation. Federal judge has imposed a gag order in the case against former Trump Campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his business associate rick gates. In that order, the judge directs attorneys to refrain from commenting on the case in public so as not to prejudice the case. Special Counsel Office is charging both men with financial crimes. This is the cofounder of fusion gps, the Company Behind the unverified trump dossier. He agrees to appeared before the house intelligence committee. The deal comes the day after fox news learned Glenn Simpson met with a russian lawyer before and after a key meeting she had with donald trump jr. The election losses for the g. O. P. Ramp up the pressure on republicans to try to get a big victory on capitol hill. Today house g. O. P. Lawmakers spent a third day trying to come to a consensus on their tax plan. Chief Congressional Correspondent mike emanuel has a progress report. This puts more pressure making sure we follow through. Paul ryans tactic away from democrat victories and governors races in new jersey and virginia is republican lawmakers must deliver on tax reform. One of the chief promises we made was that we would do tax reform and tax cuts for familie families. And people. We have to get on with that. Democrats were giddy, suggesting taxable warm would cause some wiccans who lose their seats. To our republican friends, as Clint Eastwood said, you want to pass the tax bill . You want to hurt the suburbs . Make our day. The leader picked apart the plan. Whats happening in the rooms not as set tax reform, not as tax cuts. A tax scam. This is day three of the committee working on it. Whats known as america. There are signs the bill could change. The clerk will call the role. Current estimate is that their plan would cost 1. 7 trillion of the next decade. The 2010 budget calls for 1. 5 trillion. That figure is critical in order to pass tax form with a 51 vote majority in the senate. G. O. P. Leaders hoping to voted out of committee tomorrow so can be brought to the house floor next week. Is Home Ownership is the american dream, this g. O. P. Tax scam is the american nightmare. I dont believe government is the incentivize or hear. Wants ways and means finishes its preparation, the senate is expected to release its own tax package as soon as tomorrow. So it Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell invited democrats to join the g. O. P. On tax reform. Senators, members of the administration, and tax reform advocates met here in the capital to discuss a mutual vision. There is some suggestion democrats may be emboldened to stick together and impose tax reform opposed tax form. Pelosi says the doors open for democrats to take back the house. Bret bret mike emanuel,. The markets and back in the green. Down rue 6. S p 500 move 4. Nasdaq rose 21 points. Newsday of a significant role of the 2012 benghazi attack has been indicted in washington. The man is charged with one count of conspiracy to provide support and resources to terrorists resulting in the depths of four americans, including u. S. Ambassador chris stevens. The Trump Administration is following through on a promise to start rolling back another obamaera policy is the administration cracks down on cuba following mysterious sonic attacks to u. S. Diplomats there. Rich edson shows us what changes and when. For americans, traveling to cuba will look more like it did before the obama presidency. The Trump Administration will require most americans visiting cuba to do so through an approved tour company, just as they did before president obamas 2015 overhaul of u. S. Cuba policy. American companies and travelers are also banned from spending money with 180 cuban businesses Officials Say are under the control of the cuban military. What the Trump Administration is trying to to do was tweak te policy so that the benefits of what travel there is to cuba actually goes to the people of the country. Hes an excellent guide. The Administration Says Many Americans were already booked a flight or hotel can still travel. The same applies to business deals like one equipment supplier caterpillar already signed. Americans can still bring home rum and cigars for personal use. The u. S. And cuba still maintain diplomatic relations, and officials deny these changes are related to the sonic attacks that have entered two dozen american to permits in cuba. Another change affecting the region, the Trump Administration is ending a special designation allowing more than 5,000 nicaraguans to live in the u. S. The name itself explains a lot of it. Temporary protective status. This was put in place 20some years ago as a result of natural occurrences that took place. Flooding, hurricanes. Many of those migrants came to the u. S. Temporary protected status is designed to help those in countries suffering from natural disasters. War, and other crises. Coming to the u. S. , work, and return home once it safe. For those who must leave the u. S. , its unclear how many will do so voluntarily and how difficult it will be to deport them. The Administration Says it extended the program for 86,000 hondurans through july and is reviewing whether to continue beyond. Protections for salvadorans and haitians are scheduled to expire in the coming months. Its unclear if the Trump Administration will refuse to extend those as well. Potentially affecting hundreds of thousands. Bret rich edson live at the state department. Thank you. Bret President Trump is getting a closeup look at the region where they must discredited ideology of communism maintains a strong presence. His visit occurs exactly 100 years after the communists seized power for the first time anywhere. Our resident historian chief washington correspondent james rosen looks at the Russian Revolution and its meaning toda today. Workers in st. Petersburg scrubbed a statue of vladimir better known as lenin. The stain of communism on the modern world remains indelible. Far from creating a workers paradise, the followers of the the philosophy of karl marx basically everywhere its been tried has instead brought only totalitarianism and an estimated 100 million deaths. Lenin was the template. Its the godlessness, lack of faith in anything superior to the state. The fact that there is no room for individual private property or markets. After they seized petrograd, the bolsheviks executed a czar nicholas the second. When the bolsheviks took over, almost everyone assumed except the bolsheviks the people so fanatical they cannot stay in power for a long time. They stayed in power from 1917 until the collapse of the soviet union in 1991. A nonaggression pact between russia and germany lasted three years. By 1942, russia and the united states, britain and france joined forces to defeat the axis powers. And moscow, the 44th anniversary of the bolshevik revolution gets underway. Figure in the cold war, the soviet union exported revolution. The rise of mao tsetung gave the ussr its most important all ally. A glimpse of military might. Soviet supplied tanks. The decline was slow but steady. President nixons visit to china exploited tensions and helped bring china into the modern world. Two books by the russian dissident lay bare the brutality of the soviet state. At the berlin wall, president reagan summoned the spirit of human freedom. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall. Communism persist today chiefly in china which embraced some forms of private enterprise starting in the late 1970s and in north korea which is speeding towards a Nuclear Weapons capability even as some 2 Million People there and starved and the economy depends almost entirely on assistance from china. Stu and james rosen, thanks. Lets discuss what the president is up against during his visit here to communist china. John bolton, former u. S. Investor to the United Nations, joins me from washington. Thanks for being here. I want to get your reaction to the peace and they mark about where we are on communism. I think the chinese model obviously continues. They once called communism with chinese characters. Xi jinping, according to all reporting, has as much power in china as mate multitone as justification for authoritarianism not as an ideology for any egalitarianism of what it has always been once its gotten power. That ideology of brutality. The chinese are doing. Prewell. Remember, orwells famous description as a boot stomping on the face of humanity forever. Thats how xi jinping maintains his power, not as visible as it was before because of the instruments of terror are well known. Bret ambassador, if you look at a map of countries under communist rule right now, he is visiting two of them on this trip here. China, cuba, laos, north korea and vietnam. Here is the president yesterday. Americas men and women in uniform have given their lives in the fight against nazism, imperialism, communism, and terrorists. America does not seek conflict or confrontation. But we will never run from it. History is filled with discarded regimes that have foolishly tested americas resolve. Bret what did you make of that speech . I thought it was excellent. Clear, strong, reaganesque in many respects. It square the circle that the president had date in south korea, very divided on how to handle north korea, by making it clear he would do what he needed to do to stop north Koreas Nuclear Weapons Program but hoping to keep south korea very much on side and citing the cooperation of the countries since the north korean invasion in 1950. His other audience was china where you are now and i think the meetings on thursday in beijing, certainly trade will be involved. Meetings on north korea will be the most important meetings of this entire asia trip. Bret i want to get your thoughts about how now in retrospect the media overall looks at communism. Recently i saw a New York Times opinion piece and it was about how did women fare in chinas communist revolution and it said for all its flaws, the communist revolution taught Chinese Women to dream big. Our friend mark wrote a response and said good god. Communist revolution killed 65 million in china. Is there a recasting of communism as history goes by . The New York Times has been wrong on commies and for a full century. This is the newspaper that said sent a man to the ukraine and got a Pulitzer Prize for reporting that somehow missed the famine in ukraine, killing millions of people. Starvation and execution. When stalin died, the New York Times obituary, he did have these trials in the 1930s and purges and executions. It then said with those who survived his terrorism came to hail stalin as a great leader. Its no wonder they New York Times doesnt get it today. Why should they change course . Bret ambassador bolton, thanks for your comments. Up next, the allstar panel with reaction to last night democratic victories in the u. S. And what it means for u. S. Policy ahead. This is one of the first major elections since donald trump was elected. Tonight new jersey sent an unmistakable message to the entire nation. We are better than this. In virginia its going to take a doctor or to shield our differences. And im here to let you know that the doctor is in. Virginia is turning blower all the time, and new jersey is hardly a surprise. As much for losing if not more than you do for winning. If they go into the races and say he wasnt enough like trump we will have even bigger victories. Bret we are half a world away but the Election Results last night still big news in the u. S. We will talk about the president s trip next but you take a look at two governors races. The commonwealth of virginia obviously you have almost nine points for the democrat Ralph Northam. In new jersey, a blowout win for the democrat phil murphy. President trump tweeting out about the virginia race ed gillespie worked hard but did not embrace me or what i stand for. Dont forget, republicans won 4 out of 4 house seats, and with the economy doing record numbers, we will continue to win, even bigger than before what about the fallout from all of this . Lets bring in the panel from d. C. Steve hilton, former advisor to david cameron. A. B. Stoddard, associate editor at real clear politics. Byron york, chief Political Correspondent of the washington examiner. Byron, the fallout from last night big win for the democrats. Good for democrats. Bad for republicans. I think the president s point that ed gillespie somehow did not embrace trump enough just doesnt really hold water in this case. Donald trump lost virginia. The idea that since trump himself did not win, the idea that ed gillespie could be trumpier and somehow win, doesnt make sense. Its a bad portent for next year because remember, president s usually lose a lot of house members and sometimes in the senate in their first midterms. Reagan lost 26 house members. Clinton lost 52. Obama lost 63. Barring some unforeseen event which could happen, trump is probably going to lose a bunch too. Bret what does this mean, a. B. , for tax reform. Senator cornyn and senator schumer on the future of tax reform. Had a lot of what we are seeing in the stock market, seeing in terms of consumer confidence. It has baked in the cake the expectation that we are going to get tax form done. We are determined to do it. Failure is not an option. Failure is not an option. Do you want to pass the tax bill . You want to hurt the suburbs, make our day. Bret is does it give impetus to republicans to say we really need a w after last nigh night. I think, i agree. Ryan said today basically it only makes them more committed and more panicked, frankly. I think if you are looking at the debate they are having trying to get to a bill on tax reform and the nervousness of some republicans that they might have some constituents master who say wait a minute. My taxes got raised. The doubling of the standard deduction didnt really make a difference, didnt help me out. You put me in a real jam. The problem is passing and enacting tax reform at this point might not even save their majority. They cant go into the election without passing it but there is some nervousness now that this is going to be painted as the democrats next year, a gift to donors and Corporate America but not so much the middle class if the polls show this proposal, whatever it is. Its fluid and changes every hour and is not remotely will come out of the senate ultimately. But the polling shows that what americans think of it right now is unpopular. This is a worry for republicans even if they pass it that might not be enough. Bret we are hearing from chad pergram that the market is probably the markup is going to come out tomorrow. There may be a significant change to what theyve been talking about. Will watch it closely. Steve, what about this . Extrapolating out from an offyear election, some people say this means momentum for democrats. This is really a harbinger of bad things to come for the Trump Administration and republicans. Others say listen, virginia has gone the other way forever your for every republican president. Everyone wants to read into the results what they want to see. If you are objective about it, i think the danger of overstating the degree to which this was only about donald trump and therefore the lessons are all about the degree to which candidates and parties either oppose or embrace donald trump. One interesting thing, about the virginia election, not just the governors race but the state legislative elections. There was a huge amount of outside money, outside groups, and a lot of Silicon Valley involvement. Ways of recruiting candidates, turning out the vote and dicing campaigns. It worked pretty well. I think that should really ring alarm bells not necessarily for the white house but for the rnc in terms of being outpaced organizationally. The success was proven in virginia. Its going to be rolled out across the country from 2018 and particularly for the state Legislature Elections in 2020 which whoever controls those shapes the districts for the subsequent decade. Theres really high stakes getting high turnout for the state legislative races. Democrats showing they know how to do that last night. Bret if anything else, its psychological momentum boost after a long string of losses for democrats. Byron, i want to turn to tax reform. Senator kennedy weighing in on how this is different from health care for g. O. P. At this point in the health care debate, at least from my side of the aisle, its a freeforall. People were standing up and giving ultimatums and saying if you dont put this in the bill, i wont vote for. You added this and im unhappy. Weve had none of that in terms of bret most of what you hear from capitol hill as we have to get this done. It better be different from obamacare for republicans. There is no doubt about it. The one thing that i think gives you some confidence in getting this done is tax reform, and cutting taxes, is in the wheelhouse. They didnt know how to Pass Health Care reform. That hasnt been an issue for a couple generations. As it has been for democrats. Taxcutting, yes, they know how to do this. I think they he puts them on more sure ground than on health care. Bret panel, thank you. Next up, the north korean threat and the delicate balance the resident has to strike here with chinat. With an ingredient originally found in jellyfish, prevagen is the number one selling brainhealth supplement in drug stores nationwide. Prevagen. The name to remember. Hi. So i just got off the phone with our allstate agent, and i know that we have accident forgiveness. So the incredibly minor accident that i had tonight. Four weeks without the car. Okay, yep. Good night. With accident forgiveness, your rates wont go up just because of an accident. Switching to allstate is worth it. All responsible Nations Must Join forces to isolate the brutal regime of north korea, to deny it and any form any form that you cannot support, you cannot supply, you cannot accept. And to those nations that choose to ignore this threat, or worse still, to enable it, the weight of this crisis is on your conscience. Bret President Trump speaking to the south korea and parliament. As the strip continues, he bounces here to beijing and then continues on this asia trip. As that happens, there are three u. S. Aircraft Carrier Strike groups, the uss ronald reagan, uss nimitz and uss Theodore Roosevelt commencing a three Carrier Strike exercise in the pacific. If the first time in a decade the three carriers will be together, clearly sending a message to north korea. We are back with our panel. Steve, your thoughts, not only on the south korea speech by President Trump, but the current dynamic. I thought the speech was great, i thought it was particularly powerful in the way that it really laid out so clearly the reality of life in north korea. I think that was just a really important thing to do and to establish. The overall context of the trip coming up to put me down as a massive skeptic on this idea that china is going to help us with the crisis in north korea. I just think theres no evidence for that whatsoever. Yes theyve made some moves, but they are entirely symbolic. The thing we have to understand is that china fundamentally doesnt want to help us, it wants to hurt us, it wants to dominate the world economically and militarily, and nothing in this situation is going to change that. And i take the exact opposite view from everyone else on this, everyone is saying the only way to solve the north korea situation is working with china to go through training, i think the opposite is true. We have to decouple the north korea situation from china, because it would link them together, what that means is that we are in danger of giving china a pass on the really big issues also on the agenda, which is trade. China is desperate, for example, for us to agree to the wto, the status of a market economy. If that happens than the economic disruption weve seen here in america in the last couple of decades is going to look like a picnic compared to whats going to happen. Im really worried that in order to try and get something on north korea we will really give away too much on trade. So i just think we have to separate those issues, and we have to confront north korea on our own. Bret interesting. The president is at least publicly being hopeful, tweeting out looking forward to a full day of meetings with president xi and our delegations tomorrow meaning today. Thank you for the beautiful welcome, melania and i will never forget it. It was quite the rollout in the forbidden city, the whole deal. Everyones a little worried that he will be wined and dined and flattered into being distracted away from what he was supposed to be doing there because the chinese can read him like a book and know exactly what he responds to. But i agree with steve, i think the speech was very effective. No name calling, i think the whole thing was very firm and full of resolve. I also agree that talking about what the regime is doing to its people in a public setting like that, shaming other nations into joining us is effective. I disagree with steve that i think actually the administration has been quite effective in getting something of consequence out of the chinese, which is several u. N. Security sanctions, as well as this move to have them ban all transactions by their central bank with the north koreans. I want to use two words here, if enforced, that is really meaningful and effective. Obviously it has to be enforced by the chinese government. What i think i see at this point is that trump is not delivering in following up on all these threats about mitigating the threat to intellectual property, threatening steel tariffs on the chinese and everything. Hes actually trying to get something out of them on north korea, and it doesnt seem at this point is not going to get a d nucearized north korea, it doesnt seem at this point that we can really figure out what hes asking the chinese to and he continues to threaten them on trade but i dont think is going to carry through on the threat. Bret s big meetings today, byron. This is something he has to do. This whole trip, japan and south korea, now china. The whole trip has been about north korea. This is something he actually just has to do. There have been signs of progress, the question being will the chinese put something in place, and then when trump goes home and forgets about it, then they will just go back to their old ways. Then there is a russian issue as far as that is concerned too, but the point about this is, this is something he simply has to do, and by him being more blunt than any other president has been, hes just trying a new way. Bret we will follow all elements today. Panel, thank you very much. When we come back, the final word, just one word, from beijing. In our investment experience around the world.
