Gruber who was not only paid by hhs was also made millions from other federal agencies and states has talked got his time dealing directly with president obama. We had a meeting in the oval office with experts including
myself. Reporter after all that, president obama issued a challenge to reporters in australia. I would advise every press outlet here, go back and pullup every clip, every story, and i think its fair to say that there was not a provision in the Health Care Law that was not extensively debated and was fully transparent. Looking back, even in 2010, the process was considered anything but transparent. In fact, as james rosen noted, the founder of liberal fire dog jane hamp shire wrote in march of 2010 about gruber, she called his lack of disclosure on the part of the white house t senate, the dnc and other democratic leader who is distributed grubers work and cited it as independent validation of their proposals, orchestrating the appearance of broad consensus, when in fact it was all part of the same effort,
an effort that started picking up steam soon after grubers 400,000 hhs contract went into effect in 2009. Before long, gruber was being cited everywhere, on capitol hill according to gruber, who has been our guide on a lot of this, its somewhere in the vicinity of an 8 billion cost. Reporter and in the press, in 2009, gruber released his House Health Care analysis which was picked up by Washington Post columnist ezra klein. Mit Health Economist john gruber sends along a paper looking at premiums under the new house plan. The white house blog then quickly linked to kleins post, and praised grubers, quote, objective analysis. Which then made its way back up to capitol hill. And still no mention that gruber was working for hhs. I dont know if you have seen
Jonathan Grubers analysis. In compa two weeks later, grubers analysis of the Senate Version of the Health Care Bill, that was picked up by atlantics Ron Brownstein in a piece caled a milestone in the health care journey, gruber is quoted this way, quote, gruber is a leading Health Economist at the Massachusetts Institute of technology who is consulted by politicians in both parties, nothing about his hhs contract or any other consulting with the administration or congress on the bill. In a piece, gruber is quoted stating, quote, they really make the best effort anyone has ever made, everything is in here, i cant think of anything i would do that they are not doing in the bill. You couldnt have done better than than they are doing. One of some 71 emails the party
sent out touting grooubers work. Mike allen of politico had this in his playbook the next day saying obama makes brownsteins post required reading for the west wing. Anybody involved or covering health care should see the piece. He was then cited by the white house blog and soon gruber was being celebrated on the senate floor. Jonathan gruber is one of the most respected economists in the world said in todays Washington Post, heres a quote heres a bill that reduces the deficit, covers 30 Million People, 30 million more people and has a promise of lowering premiums. That oped gruber wrote in the Washington Post laid out his analysis of the cost of the bill, and heres how he was identified at the end, quote,
the writer ask a professor of economics at the Massachusetts Institute of technology. And so it went, for months, hampshire wrote for grubers score sheet for the bill added up to the budget offices official scoring. Adding, quote, now that it is known that john than gruber was a white house consultantfor decades to come should be made publicly available. The reason that i think this conversation ends up being a little frustrating is because the focus entirely is on washington procession and, yes, i have said it, that is an ugly process. This is the u. S. Economy. And bret, let me tell you something, the fact of the matter is that for the vast majority of the people, their health care is not going to change. You guarantee that theyre not going to theyre going to
be able to keep their doctors. Let me finish my answers. I know you dont like the fill busser. The notion that this is not trance parent, that nobody knows whats in the bill. Everybody know what iss bill. I sat for seven hours. I just told you what was is connecticut in . Connecticut . What are you specifically referring to . 100 million for the hospital. Is montana in for the Asbestos Program . This is people, this is real money, people are worried about this stuff. As i said before, in the final provisions are going to be posted for many days before the thing passes. That was three days before the house voted on the Health Care Bill that eventually became law, that was march 17, 2010. Okay, charles, that was worth waiting for. All the glitches you talk about, thats not gremlins,
thats the vast left wing conspiracy rearing its ugly head as a distraction. Im entirely with ron here, i think the president was not told about whats going on. And the reason is they have had six years experiencing of the press essentially conspiring with them and the amazing show of events that you had in that piece in which the administration issues statements, it uses gruber reports, its echoed by their mignons in the press thats repeated by democrats as if this is objective evidence, its simply one example of it. The other one is, i think they calculated the president could go a week without talking about it and then pretend he never heard of it because you wouldnt hear about it in the press and in fact except for fox, you look at all the networks and you showed that last week, its been a blackout. I remember reading, i think it was on saturday, it was probably
the first time in the New York Times on page 12 in a box way down at the bottom and the whole empet tus of the story is, republicans upset or criticizing about. This is a scandal of the first order and they imagine they would actually get away with it. And when you see everybody pretending that they had never heard of this guy when you show the evidence, he had meetings in the house 17 times, so when they where the movie, called the man who never was. I think this is an extension of the secret service scandal. Gruber got into the white house, he went through a side door and sat in the oval office and joined 1 meetings and thats exactly what happened. And not only all the stuff that we laid out there, but in 2012, the Obama Campaign pointed to gruber as an architect of obama care and romney care. They saw gruber as an asset against mitt romney on the issue of health care and they put that
bio, if you will, and articles about him on the Obama Campaign response to the debate in 2012, the first debate. What is that line from theroux, circumstantial evidence is very compelling, like the trout in the milk. Whats infuriating about this, or one of the things, the whole, why are you believing your lying eyes approach to. Its like a Jedi Mind Trick they think is working, they can somehow deny knowing this guy. We have been following the Health Care Debate for years, Jonathan Gruber, is president is right, hes not some staffer, because staffers rank lower than Jonathan Gruber in the health carolout. He was a consultant to help script the bill for the senate, he was the guy that was supposedly the architect of mitt romneys Health Care Plan that obama became even as of last a couple of weeks ago after the
midterms was citing and tweaking, look, im just doing what mitt romney did. The entire foundation of lies to this thing is outstanding. When he says there was an honest debate, its not an honest debate if one side is always lying. You cant debate something if one side is constantly obscuring the facts. There is something to the white house that says forget about what we said before, were moving forward on this, they have done it numerous times on numerous issues, like we dont have videotape. Again and again and again they stay, they really believe if we say something, that will make it true and they do think that were stupid and were not going to check the videotape and they were in bed with the left wing media in helping concoct this. But its similar to what happened in iraq where you had the right wing media in bed with the white house and push an agenda that knew where it wanted to come. Not excusing what happened with the white house. But we live in an era where the trust in the presidency is at an alltime low, the trust in the congress and the Supreme Court is at an alltime low and the trust in the media is below all that, and we have earned it. You know, i dont know, on one level, can you look and say, the percentage of u. S. Adults with insurance has increased. The percentage without has decreased. This second cycle of enrollment is now underway and seemingly without a glitch. There is a secretary now in charge of hhs who i have found over the years to actually be a competent manager, something we dont have a lot of in the Obama Administration. The problem is the central attribute you have to have as any leader, in any walk of life and certainly in government is trust. And this president has destroyed the credibility of
his administration himself and government itself. So, i think in the long run, as somebody who would like to see this bill work, i think they have really undermined it. And its going to be harder to defend it. Yeah. I think one i mean, i havent looked closely at the poll, but i would be interested to know if this alltime low for obamacare is related to this new Enrollment Period as people are actually forced to confront what they have to do with obamacare and not lying it. Probably not. Probably go down when gruber kicks in. I think so. I think one of the things thats going on is that they made all of these promises that obamacare was going to do all of these wonderful things. A lot of these wonderful things havent happened. The cost cutting the premiums being lower and all of that. At the same time, obama completely owns the dysfunctional American Healthcare system. Any bad experience you have with healthcare you can now attribute to obamacare. The really big picture on,
this i think somebody needs to do a lot better reporting on the fact that gruber is hardly a single incident. The whole probably in warming industry is full of grubers. There is so much of American Government full of grubers. Allegedly objective consultants rent seeking. Sucking on the side of the la vint. Lets look back to 2005. Remember radio talk show host Armstrong Williams who was the u. S. A. Today came out with a report that he was paid more than 200,000 to pitch no child left behind. It was front page news. It was, i remember, it was covered nonstop. Here is a guy who arguably is the linchpin for obamacare, paid by hhs, and, yet, is cited as an independent objective analyst by all kinds of news organizations and capital hill. It does not get covered. Now admitting that he lied to get this thing passed. Do you remember the
controversy and it was a legitimate controversy over at the generals who were on the dole to be promoting the war and the media made a big deal out of that. Realized generals doing exactly what friewber was doing. Charles . The media. Former justice, im sorry. The Media Investment in this is so total having not covered it when it was happening, citing him when he wasnt an expert. Now, of course, not covering it is sort of amazing. I think ron is right about the trust issue. It starts with obama. If obama had not said if you like your plan, you keep it, but actually more broadly, you asked him in that would you have. He said look for the vast majority of americans its not going to effect them that was the promise of obama ircan a. Were going to be nice and help the uninsured and the poor and thats fine. Can you accept that. And he said but if you are not one of those who need help, youre going to be
okay. You are not involved in this. You are going to be left alone. Now gruber told us that they knew from the beginning that was a lie. And they covered it up and they fudged the numbers and they got cbo to do xyz. But obama is the one who repeated it. The promise of obamacare is if you are not in need you will be okay. Then it turns out lose your plan, get higher premiums, deductibles. You are not going to your own doctor. You will have to drive two hours to get a hospital. That, i think, what undermines it entirely. I think in this year you are hopefully going to have a chance to destroy obamacare one stroke at a time.
