To another. We have fox team coverage. Rick leventhal is in new york and has the story of a nurse that insists she does not have ebola, taking a whole lot of people for a ride. Amy kellogg is in london with increasing concerns about Russian Military activity in europe. Ed henry is at the white house with trouble within the president s inner circle but we begin with Jennifer Griffin at the pentagon and disturbing news about returning veterans war on terror. Good evening, jennifer. Reporter good evening, bret. New intelligence about recidivism about guantanamo detainees. The u. S. Intelligence and Defense Community suspect as many as 20 to 30 former Guantanamo Bay detainees have joined forces with isis and other militant groups inside syria. Some of the former detainees are fighting with isis, others are supporting the nusra front. We know that some of the detainees that have come out of guantanamo have gone back to the fight, to the battlefield. Were aware of that. Reporter the chairman of the House Armed Services committee called for an immediate suspension of detainee releases in a letter to the defense secretary today. Quote, the u. S. Government must not release terrorist detainees at the same time we have committed u. S. Service members to fight isil. To continue to do so just as we have had to open a new front in the war on terror is unthinkable. One of the first policy decisions president obama made when he became president was to announce he is closing gitmo. Let me repeat, i am not going to release individuals who endanger the American People. Reporter he reiterated his desire to do so at the state of the union this year. This needs to be the Year Congress lifts the remaining restrictions on detainee transfers and we close the prison at Guantanamo Bay. Reporter the pentagon has cleared 80 current detainees for transfer out of Guantanamo Bay. President push authorized the release of 530 detainees, but defense sources say that the recent releases have included more hardcore fighters. One example, in april of this year a moroccan who spent more than three years at gitmo was reported killed while leading a known Jihadist Group in syria fighting president Bashar Assads forces. The former u. S. Ambassador to iraq from 2010 to 2012 says he would advise releasing more people from gitmo. Tse people are essentially committed to their evil cause and it is very hard to court out who are going to stay at home and who are going to return to the battlefield. Reporter of the 620 detapies released during the bush and obama administrations u. S. Officials estimate 180 have returned to the fight. Jennifer, thank you. Tonight president obama is playing campaigner in chief, as we said, in maine while friction within his staff becomes a hot front page topic. Heres chief White House Correspondent ed henry. Reporter as president obama tried to focus back on the campaign trail, he found himself dogged p eged by yet another na security crisis. This time a crisis within his own security team, simmering tensions between the president s top advisers spilled out into the open about infighting about National Security adviser susan rice and chief of staff dennis mcdonough, while aides dumped on secretary of state john kerry for not being on the same page. The New York Times reporting, quote, white house officials joked that he is the astronaut played by Sandra Bullock in the movie gravity, somersaulting through space untethered from the white house. Kerry dismissed it as gossip, though he was forced to push back on the impression that administration insiders are wasting time battling each other instead of having a singular focus on waging war with isis militants. The coordination and relationship between susan and me and dennis and the team is as tight as ive ever experienced. Reporter that easy rapport does not seem to exist between rice and mcdonough. The National Security adviser miffed the chief of staffs broad portfolio is encroaching on her turf. Mcdonough personally flew to california to huddle with Senate Intelligence chair Dianne Feinstein over redakzs to a senate report. Besides elbowing out rice, mcdonough getting into the weeds like that feeds into republican charges that inexperience flows from the very top. Weve seen the disaster of what happens when you let somebody who cant run a Lemonade Stand go into the white house. Reporter the behindthescenes sniping comes one day after officials also anonymously attacked israeli Prime Minister beng gin netanyahu, calling him a coward and chicken bleep. It is disgraceful, unacceptable, damaging, and i think neither president obama nor i ive never heard that word around me in the white house. Reporter meanwhile at the pentagon, general Martin Dempsey revealed he wants to send more military advisers to anbar prauchbs to fight isis, which means expect more u. S. Troops to go into iraq, but the key is after the election. Ed henry on the north lawn. Ed, thank you. Another hot spot around the world, u. S. Allies in europe are watching the skies tonight a little more carefully than usual. That is because russians bombastic leader is poking the nato bear again. Amy kellogg has the latest tonight. Reporter fighter jets like these british typhoons from eight different nato countries were scrambled to intercept russian warplanes flying around europe this week. Its not unusual for russian planes to fly outside their airspace, but four formations in 24 hours is. The types of aircraft and the routes they took were also outside the norm. The planes that buzzed europe earlier this week included strategic bombers capable of carrying Nuclear Weapons and refueling tanks. The most dramatic saw russian planes fly over norway, britain, and those that werent turned back went as far south as the coast of portugal. But nato airspace was never breached. German chancellor Angela Merkel had a measured reaction. Translator in the last few months there has been a lot of activity in terms of russian Army Exercises but im not acutely worried that a bigger violation of airspace is taking place. Reporter meanwhile Vladimir Putin ratcheted up. Maybe the United States the way they implement their leadership, is it beneficial to everybody and their constant interference in all the Worlds Affairs brings peace, democracy . We should just relax, enjoy . Reporter the on going tensions in ukraine are the reason many assume russian planes buzzed europe, the provocation of one Nuclear State by another. Expect to see more. When you play nuclear brinkmanship, theres always the possibility, though maybe not very high, that you can actually slip. The threat of nuclear war is not zero, and thats very important because without that, you cant really use it as effective blackmail tool. Reporter bret, whether this is brinksmanship or sabre rattling or something else, the four incidents seemed to be part of a pattern of increasing russian air activity in europe and nato planes racing to respond. Bret. Amy, thank you. Back here at home, a group of Health Professionals in maine is warning that an epidemic of fear can be just as dangerous as an epidemic with a virus. They are supporting a local nurse pushing back against efforts to quarantine her as a precaution against ebola. Senior correspondent Rick Leventhal is on top of that tonight. Reporter kaci hickox openly defying maines 21day quarantine order, leaving her home for a bike ride with her boyfriend. State troopers trailed her but couldnt stop her because a jum hadnt issued an order mandating her arrest if she violated guidelines. She said she is not a threat because she doesnt have ebola, she isnt sick and has no symptoms and her legal team is vowing to fight what it calls her unconstitutional confinement. Did you talk about taking a step last night . No, i didnt. This morning we just said we want to go for a bike ride. You woke up and wanted to ride. Is that something you do often . We do, yes. Thank you, guys. I have to go speak with the Health Department now. Reporter the state Health Commissioner says the quarantine is a common sense approach and applies to anyone who had direct contact with ebola patients, since the disease may not surface for three weeks after exposure. Hickox should show as much concern for the people of maine as she has people of sierra leone. Concern about the lack of reliability and the lack of trut worthiness and the information that has been received and the basis upon which you determine risks is the ability to know the epidemiological history of any individuals exposure. You need to be able to have trust and credibility in that information. That makes her a higher risk. Reporter today the Governors Office said they spent hours trying to negotiate but as a result of the failed effort to reach an agreement, the governor will exercise the full extent of his thoers allowable by law. The u. S. Ambassador to the united nations, samantha power, says ebola has no greater friend than fear. We all hear those voices of fear in our heads. That is what makes us human. The challenge, especially for leaders, is not to let them rule us. Reporter the feds are desperately trying to encourage Health Care Workers to continue battling ebola on the front lines in west africa. Meanwhile the one patient with ebola here in america, dr. Craig spencer, is still in isolation here at Bellevue Hospital in serious, but stable condition. Rick leventhal in new york. Thank you. Up next, Maria Bartiromo in new york with how much the economy is growing and how the markets are reacting to that. First heres some of our fox affiliates across the country are covering tonight. There will be two revisions of this figure before it is final. Wall street, though, showed its approval today. The dow surged 221 points. The s p 500 was up 12, the nasdaq finished ahead 17. Lets get more now on the economic picture. Joining us from our sister network, fox business network, Maria Bartiromo. Good evening, maria. Good evening, bret. Some big positives to report today from the gdp report and rallying stocks. The u. S. Economy is showing signs of improvement and the stock market is reacting to fundamentals, which is good news, as opposed to the market reacting to the Federal Reserve stimulus and record low rates. The news is not all good, however, because even though todays Economic Growth was better than most expected, it has not translated into our personal economic story. Wages are down over the last five years, and the only reason Household Income is actually up slightly over that time frame is because it includes families with dual incomes. It will be important to see these numbers continuing to show improvement, particularly since the Federal Reserve has exited its Bond Buying Program this week. That socalled quantitative easing is over. So the question becomes can the economy continue to spew out strong numbers without the feds help going forward. The next important reading to watch, the employment number for the month of october. That comes out next friday, bret. As always, thank you, maria. Dont miss maria on fox business network. Tonight chief Political Correspondent carl cameron reports for us on a contest with definite star power. Reporter Hillary Clinton hit the campaign trail for democratic u. S. Senate candidate bruce braley in iowa, where his rival, joni ernst, has inched ahead. When it comes to protecting womens right to determine their own medical future, joni ernst is not on your side. Bruce bral echtey is. If she had her way, we would lose the Preventive Services that are now available, like mammograms. The Insurance Companies would get to turn the clock back to the days when being a woman was labeled a preexisting condition. Reporter iowa is one of three blue states the democrats designated mustwins to protect their senate majority. But polls in colorado and now the Hawkeye State suggest their firewall is burning and their war on women is not working. This is not a war on women. If anybody is making it a war, its the democrats. They have pushed waumcare of the and with Obamacare Young women are having a difficult time finding affordable policies. The latest poll shows ernst ahead by four points. She has become a rock star. Her ad featuring hog castration and pistol practice. She commandinged iowa erks Largest National guard unit and served in the first gulf war. So far the two sides have spent 78 million, wrapping up a grueling tour of all counties, she blasted the left for tri trivializing war and talking down to women. First of all, i have been to war. They better be using war to talk about the service that our great men and women have given to their country. Clintons in 2008 braley pressured clinton to holding a fundraiser for him and then spurned her by endorsing john edwards in the caucuses. Clinton is trying to build better relationships for the 2016 president ial race, while in the 2014 senate race it looks like republicans may have built a better ground game. By this time in midterms past, democrats had a 10, sometimes 15,000 vote lead in the early voting and absentee ballot incoming ballots. This time around republicans have pulled to a tie. That is a big, big turn around and ernst has just arrived for a meet and greet at town hall here, so well send it back to you. Carl cameron in an iconic diner there in webster city, iowa. Remember bill clintons comment about needing the definition of the word is. And then theres Chris Christie. Tonight james rosen looks at whether the new jersey governors in your face style will play if and when he runs for president. Id be more than happy to have a debate with you any time youd like, guy, because somebody like you doesnt know a damn bit of what youre talking about except to stand up and show when the cameras are here. Ive been here when the cameras arent here, buddy, and done the work. But until that time, sit down and shut up. Reporter the epic smackdown Chris Christie gave to a heckler has revived debate over whether the contender possesses the requisite temperament for the oval office. Its great on tv, gets him a lot of hits on youtube and built up his brand nationally, but that kind of bad behavior will not go very far if he wants to be president. I think the media is delighted when they can do stories about tough christie and bully christie. I think its pretty refreshing to see a politician smack down an annoying Person Holding a sign five feet away from his face. Christie was gingerly returning to the National Stage until last week when he ordered the kwoern tee of a nurse returning from sierra leone. Kaci hickox insisted she had no ebola symptoms and on monday christie approved her early release. Then there is wisconsin Governor Scott walker, whos locked in a tough reelection battle and said to harbor hard feelings with christie because the latter has allegedly withheld Vital Campaign funds from walker, supposedly in order to help neutralize a possible 2016 rival. We have a great personal relationship. Ill be going next week to campaign for him two different times. Secondly weve spent 6 million already in the state of wisconsin on this effort. Reporter forget iowa or south carolina. The Chris Christie show isnt faring all that well right now in new jersey, where the most recent quinnipiac poll places the governors job Approval Rating in the low to mid40s. Please join me this weekend for another special political documentary. This one focusing on president obamas Health Care Plan and how the people of New Hampshire are dealing with it. Those employees, ive asked them all to check the exchange to see what the cost would be. And what they report back to me is not necessarily positive news. Mine was going to be close to 300 a month with like 8,000 deductible. An 8,000 deductible . And thats awful insurance. To go down to a 5,000 copay was over 400 a month. Newly updated. To severe chronic plaque psoriasis. So i finally made a decision to talk to my dermatologist about humira. Humira works inside my body to target and help block a specific source of inflammation that contributes to my symptoms. In clinical trials, most adults with moderate to Severe Plaque Psoriasis saw 75 skin clearance on humira. And the majority of people were clear or almost clear in just 4 months. Humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. Serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened; as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. Before treatment, get tested for tb. Tell your doctor if youve been to areas where certain fungal infections are common, and if youve had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flulike symptoms or sores. Dont start humira if you have an infection. Set a new goal today. Ask your dermatologist about humira. Because with humira clearer skin is possible. Along with anticipation for next weeks midterm elections comes concern about something that pops up every election. Voter fraud. There have been confirmed cases. But how significant is voter fraud . How much impact could it potentially have . Senior correspondent eric shawn is following that story tonight in new york. Reporter its not even election day and voter fraud cases are already popping up. In tennessee, Joanne Cronin charged with buying votes. In connecticut, indicted on 19 voter fraud charges. In texas, two pleaded guilty to buying votes with cocaine and cash. In rhode island, police are investigating several voter fraud allegations. I think that the threat of voter fraud is often exaggerated. That said, where it happens, its quite serious and i certainly dont condone it where it happens and its important to be vigilant against it. Reporter in illinois and Maryland Voters complain their votes were switched from republican to democrat on voting machines. Officials in maryland say it happened on 20 machines and could not replicate it during testing. The latino activist group raised eyebrows by retweeting a link to a list where people can vote without a photo i. D. In North Carolina, james okeefe secretly taped Campaign Workers telling his operative that she could vote. As long as youre registered to vote, youll be fine. Reporter a Georgia Mason and old dominion study estimates in 2008, 6. 4 of noncitizens illegally voted. Enough to have president obama his win in North Carolina and al franken his senate seat in minnesota. Far fewer citizens voted in 2010, the last offyear election. Elections officials like nevada secretary of state ross miller who collected an Election Integrity task force say they are on guard. Theres nothing more sacred than maintaining integrity in the electoral process so people have confidence in the democratic process. You have to have a very dill ja jent system set up so you can detect fraud where it happens and go after those individuals. Reporter recent cases in nevada involved Illegal Immigrants voting, double voting and candidates who are not even eligible to run. Eric, thank you. We will stay on this story and continue to update you if we hear anything. If youre watching me now, you are not watching one of the broadcast networks evening news programs. And while we applaud that intelligent and discerning choice, we want to bring you up to date on how the competition has been covering a big story, the midterm elections. Fox news media analyst and host of foxs media buzz, howard kurtz, tells us there isnt much to talk about. Just eight days to go before the election and the stakes enormous. Reporter then why was that monday report the first story on the midterms that abcs world news tonight has aired since since 1st. Eight years ago with democrats poised to take over congress under george w. Bush, the full coverage on those broadcasts through the third week in october amounted to 88 minutes. Bad news for the republicans. The president s Approval Rating falls to a new low. Reporter and now with republicans having a strong chance of winning the senate under president obama, just 18 minutes. And even this week they havent led with politics. On our broadcast tonight, quarantine fight. The governors versus the ebola nurse. Tonight, what went wrong. Reporter some critics say the networks are less enthusiastic about an election that revolves in part around obamas unpopularity, but when they have done stories this fall that include the midterms, 18 on the cbs evening news, 13 on nbc nightly news and 2 on abcs newscasts, they have acknowledged the republican strength. When its all said and done, we could be looking at a very different balance of power in this country. It is a tough year for democrats. Reporter others say that public disgust with politics means low ratings. Back in 2006 the overriding issue in america driving the elections, the bloody iraq war. Translator they are trying to harm us and block our development with these sanctions. Push us into political, economic and cultural isolation, into backwardness, in other words. The cold war was easy compared to where we are today. And the immediate is putin trying to make it easy for you again, to bring it back . I hope not. No, because hes doing it very differently and in a way thats very challenging to the ability to be able to avoid conflicts. Nato is concerned about russian airplanes, russian fighters jets, russian bombers on the move. Four formations in the past 24 hours, the types of air crafts and routes they took, international airspace, but outside the norm for russia and outside military any military tracking that they know of, exercises that were planned. There you see some of the routes from russia. What is going on with russia, as the incursion into ukraine continues. Lets bring in our panel. Syndicated columnist, george will, syndicated columnist charles krauthammer. Charles. You get a president who promises the russians i will be more flexible after my reelection, meaning after i can act without having to answer to the American People and russia, which is a revengeoriented expansionist power responds accordingly. The u. S. Is accommodating, the president is weak, has been since the beginning. When he came into office he blamed the cool relations on the Bush Administration rather than russian aggressiveness. He offered the farcical reset. He cancelled the agreement with the pols and the czechs. We will not to this day give the ukrainians simply defensive weapons to hold back russian incursions, instability and what its been doing in ukraine. As a result, russia responds accordingly. Its on the move. It blames the u. S. A very strong antiamerican campaign internally and externally, and thats the result of weakness. This is precisely in response to a president who comes into office who blames our low standing in the world on the brutality, the cowboy of the Bush Administration. He will have a hand outstretched and hes got it slapped again and again and again. I heard from a couple people today, mara, that this is also Vladimir Putin feel pinched because it comes a couple days after this very aggressive speech by putin, but also the sanctions and the price of gas, price of crude. Theres two things that are really hurting russia and you just heard putin talk about it. These sanctions are terrible, theyre hurting us. The price of gas is a great geostrategic weapon. Its hurting iran and russia because the price is low and these are Petroleum Based economies. The thing that puzzles me about what hes doing, if he wanted to invade ukraine, he himself said he could do it in two weeks and we couldnt do anything about it. Were not going to war over ukraine. Weve made that clear. If he wanted to take another bite out of ukraine, he could do that too. I dont know what hes trying to do by in effect flirting or getting up really close to nato airspace. Its a weakened and demoralized nato. I dont think its working. Do you think nato is weaken andy demoralized. Do you think the astone januarys and the pols arent shaking in their boots theres no doubt that they want to know that were going to be there if anything happens to them but how are they going to know that short of testing it . George . Putin is an angry man. Stalin wasnt angry. Dangerous, homicidal, but not angry. He is like hitler, putin is. Hitler had the humiliation of world war i settlement. Putin has the grievance against nato, which was the architect of what he calls the great geopolitical tragedy of the 20th century, which was the defeat of the soviet union. Compared to putin playing with his nuclear forces, the Islamic State is childs play. And frankly, the ukraine is merely the appetizer. It seems to me he does want to destroy nato. And the way to do that is to take a bite out of one of the Baltic States and watch article 5, an attack on one is an attack on all be ignored by nato which i have complete confidence it would be. If that happened, i agree totally, but that would be a test we would have to come to the defense what about poland on september the 1st. Putin is like hitler but hes more subtle and hes also weaker. His objective is to say that the cold war settlement of 1992 is dead. In that settlement it was understood that Eastern Europe was now free and could choose europe and would be protected by nato and the u. S. That was a done deal. Hes undoing the deal. The buzzing of these countries is a way to say we can penetrate and probe, threaten, and were going to see whether the United States is an ally you can rely on. Look at what its not doing in ukraine. Again, not even providing defensive weaponry. Do you think it will be there, particularly under obama, if it needs you . Its putting the question of Eastern Europe as a question again which it had not been. Mara, we just heard from secretary kerry on putin. Secretary kerry was the focus of this New York Times piece. In it included this quote. Mr. Kerry is vocal and forceful in internal debates, officials said, but he often seems out of sync with the white house in his public statements. White house officials joke that he is like the astronaut played by Sandra Bullock in the movie gravity, somersaulting through space untethered from the white house. Now, he went out of his way today to say how connected he is and how he went to dinner with susan rice, but that was not a great portrayal. No, that was not a great portrayal and that was pretty amateurish, i thought. To trash the secretary of state anonymously like that, although it was a very poetic metaphor, i think that was pretty lame. It comes after the chicken bleep. Yes. Now, this is anonymous somebody is going on a roll here. Yes, somebody is going on a roll. Now, we know what they think about netanyahu and we know what they thought of him for years and years and years. I dont know why the chicken bleep is worse than any of the other things they have called him over the years. But the kerry thing, to undercut your own secretary of state seems pretty gra trutous. Panel, stand by. We have some prabreaking news. Good news it is. Capture in pennsylvania. Officials in northeastern pennsylvania say they have now arrested the man suspected of killing a state trooper there. They have been searching for many weeks and now it is done. His name is eric frein. Hes 31 years old. Cops say he is a selftrained survivalist who had talked about wanting to commit mass murder. They say he had likely planned his attack and his escape for years on end. The fbi put eric frein on its ten most wanted fugitives list. Police say the suspect shot two state troopers last month outside Police Barracks in the northeastern part of pennsylvania. One trooper died in that attack, the other injured. And tonight, state police have issued a one sentence statement indicating that they have caught eric frein and no more information will be released about that tonight. But in pennsylvania, a huge sigh of relief, bret. Thats good news, thank you. Well head back with any new development. Next up, looking ahead to the election and concerns over voter fraud. [ female announcer ] we help make secure financial tomorrows a reality for over 19 million people. [ susan ] my promotion allowed me to start investing for my retirement. Transamerica made it easy. Taking control of your retirement . E trade gives you the tools and resources to get it right. Are you type e . As you look live there, you can see the u. S. Capitol is getting a facelift. Some construction ongoing and theres always concern as we are five days away from the midterm elections about possible voter fraud. That have been confirmed cases. In fact theres a new study out by Old Dominion University and it says this about Illegal Immigrants voting. Quote, it represents our best guess that the portion of noncitizens who quoted, the adjusted estimate of six. 4 for 2008 1. 2 million votes cast. Back with the panel. George, people concerned about this around the country. How big is this. 1. 2 billion is a lot of votes considering we had a president ial turn on 547 florida votes and the 60th vote in the senate to pass obamacare came from al franken in minnesota who won the disputed recount by 312 votes so these matters. Attorney general says voter fraud doesnt exist but then his employer says there is not a smidgen of corruption in the irs we have to take this with a grain of salt. The attorney general says that voter i. D. Laws that exist in 30 states have a desperate impact on whites and blacks whereas the number of whites and barack blacks the percentage of whites and blacks are identical that do not have photo ids. Catherine group true to vote one of the principle targets of the irs and the fbi and otf and all kinds of people harassing them found people doubly registered in states that they looked at. Those are numbers. That doesnt voter fraud but the potential is certainly there. You hear about it, mara. You know, there is a law, National Voter registration act passed in 1993, it requires that states remove from their registration lists ineligible voters. Those who are died or moved away. There is this book obamas enforcer about Obamas Justice Department Says attorney general has refused to enforce this statute. When you hear this and get pushed back about how big a deal is it and then you see some of these stats and studies. Look, you know, if voter fraud is occurring, its a real problem and it should be prevented. However, you know, on the other side of this, there are people who say that there are tens of thousands of Voter Registration forms that are not being processed. Its not always been a good place for women to be able to present ourselves. Its more of a conservative place. Now, the governor there bobby jindal has just come out with a a statement. He said the president s policies which senator landrieu largely supports are unpopular in louisiana and the other 49 stays because they are ill advised, liberal, and dont work out here in the real world and his administration has also proven to be incompetent. Trying to blame it on race is ridiculous. Charles . Its ridiculous and i think its also politically fatal. The first rule of commerce is dont insult your customers. To call the electorate your own people essentially to say they are racist or sexist, which is what she said, and that explains my unpopularity, i think is a huge mistake. Marah. Yeah. I think the only thing that was better than i expected about that cut is she didnt use the word racism or sexism. But Mary Landrieu is in a very very tough race. She has won them before. This is tougher than anything else she has faced. He she is not going to get auto . Neither is her opponent on tuesday and looks like she is going to a runoff. She is a very good campaigner. Yes she is. Interesting play for her. Democrats are thrown back on identity politics. The New York Times ran a story the other day why does joni earnst in iowa appeal to men. Inconceivable to them.
