And her cell phone pings hundreds of miles away. Reporting begins now. Announcer now Shepard Smith reporting live from the fox news desk. Shepard smith President Trumps former fixer and lawyer and new accusations about the hush money payoffs to a porn star and a playmate. The top democrat on the House Intelligence Committee adam schiff says President Trump could eventually spend time behind bars. Theres a very real prospect on the day donald trump leaves office, the Justice Department may indict him. He may be the first president in quite some time to face the real prospect of jail time. Federal prosecutors filed a Court Document stating that President Trump illegally ordered his former longtime Attorney Michael Cohen to buy the silence of two women. That, it said, is a violation of Campaign Finance law. The president today tweeted its his lawyers mistake, not his. The actress Stormy Daniels and the playboy model Karen Mcdougal have both talked publicly about what they claim were sexual relations with the president. President trump denies the affairs and has not been publicly charged with any crimes related to the payments. Part of the filing last week reads as cohen himself has now admitted with respect to both payments, he acted in coordination with and at the direction of individual one, thats the president. The documents do not include President Trumps name, but they note individual one became the president of the United States in january of 2017. In a separate court filing on friday, the special Counsel Robert Mueller wrote that cohen lied to congress and prosecutors about his contacts with russians during the 2016 president ial campaign. That same day, mueller team also released a heavily redacted document accusing the president s former Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort of lying to special counsel investigators violating his plea deal. Robert mueller says manafort misled investigators about his contacts with a ukrainian businessman linked to Russian Military intelligence and about his communication with Trump Administration fishes stretching into this officials stretching into this calendar year. Manaforts lawyers say he believes he was truthful. Mueller is looking into moscows meddling, possible collusion with President Trumps campaign, whether the president himself obstructed justice, and evidence of any crimes uncovered during the investigation. The Washington Post reports russians interacted with at least 14 different President Trump associates during the campaign and president ial transition, and that the special counsel prosecutors are looking into it all. President trump says there was no collusion and no obstruction. The president tweeted this morning about the investigation, denying everything and once again calling it a witch hunt. Our chief intelligence correspondent reporting from washington. Reporter despite some limited cooperation, the u. S. Attorney in new york and the special counsel are calling for significant jail time defined for cohen. They allege the Campaign Finance violation admitted payments to Stormy Daniels and Karen Mcdougal. The incoming chairman said hes weighing impeachment among other options. Well, they would be impeachable offenses. Whether they are important enough to justify impeachment is a different question. Even though they were committed before the president became president , they were committed in the service of fraudulently obtaining the office. That would be an impeachable offense. The fact of the matter is, what we see from indictments and charging statements is a much broader conspiracy against the American People involving these payments, involving, you know, attempt to to influence the campaign improperly. Reporter in a tweet, the president s lawyer Rudy Giuliani declared candidate trump did not break any laws, no collusion, he wrote, no obstruction. Not clearly a Proper Campaign contribution or expenditure. Cohens sentencing is just days away, wednesday, in new york city. Shepard smith there is more court action in the manafort case coming up this week, right . Reporter thats right. We have a status hearing tomorrow here in washington. On wednesday, both will be in a federal court arguing whether the Campaign Chairman violated his plea agreement with the special counsel. The special counsel investigators allege improper contacts between manafort and the white house. After signing the plea agreement, manafort stated he had no director indreblgt communications with anyone in the administration while they were in the administration and that he never asked anyone to try to communicate a message to anyone in the administration on any subject matter. The evidence demonstrates that manafort lied about his contacts and that he had contact with administration officials. Manaforts legal team has argued consistently that the special counsel is using strong arm tactics to obtain information their client does not have or evidence they say does not exist. It also says the special counsel has pressed manafort on jared kushner. Similar allegations were levelled again today by an associate, a political operative roger stone. And just for some context on the contact between manafort and the white house, you remember they have whats called a common or a communal defense. Really the controversy is why that continues after the plea agreement was made, shep. Shepard smith live from washington, now the search for the next white house chief of staff. On saturday, President Trump said john kelly will be leaving his post by the end of the year. Vice president pences chief of staff, nick ahers was reported to be the top contender for the job. But today he took himself out of the running saying he would also like to leave this white house at the end of the year. Reporter so that means both President Trump and the Vice President mike pence now need a new chief of staff. Much of the intrigue surrounding the president s upcoming selection as the white house keep of staff is essentially the gatekeeper over here from the west wing. Theres a lot of speculation with names flying all over the place to replace john kelly. That includes the current budget director nick mulvaney. He was long thought to be a possible successor to the outgoing kelly. Mulvaney is no longer interested in the position. Mulvaney, rather, im told would be more interested in treasury or commerce if the president would eventually need him in one of those roles. A source close to Steve Mnuchin told me as well this morning that mnuchin has never expressed interest in becoming the next white house chief of staff. Im told mnuchin feels he can best serve as the treasury secretary. An interesting answer, though, over the weekend as it remlated to the president s top trade representative. Listen here. Has anyone at the white house talked to you about chief of staff . No. What im hearing from you is youre not interested in the job . Im not i havent spoken to anyone. Im entirely focused on what im trying to do, and its difficult enough. Reporter so he didnt entirely shut the door there. Hes leading up the trade negotiations between the United States and china right now this is the single biggest policy priority for President Trump. Very likely will be the biggest policy priority as wellhe headi into 2019 as well. Shepard smith for chief of staff, there is one person who seems quite interested. Mark meadows from North Carolina has openly embraced the possibility. His name popped up in reports as well. He was saying serving as chief of staff would be an incredible honor. The president has a long list of qualified candidates, i know hell make the best selection for his administration and the country. Meadows himself has been a major ally of this president. Meadows sits on the oversight committee. Has a lot of experience dealing with those issues. Democrats, as you know, have talked about what they want to do with subpoena power come 2019, so meadows could make sense considering his years on the overnight committee. With nick ahers no longer in the running, there is no clear favorite to replace john kelly. Reporter live on the north lawn. The biggest demonstration . Paris. Parts of the city shut down. More than 8,000 cops said to patrol the streets. People lit fires and vandalized shops and restaurants. Huge Armored Police vehicles rolled down streets that are usually busy with Holiday Shoppers this time of year. The protests began over macrons proposal to raise the gas tax. He since scrapped that idea, but the protests have grown into a Larger Movement against government and economic inequality. Tonight, macron rolled out new policies. We were there in paris over the weekend, and the violence was strong. It was heavy between the antigovernment protesters and the police and the demand from macron to Say Something was strong as well. We heard him speak for about 13 minutes. Here is how he led off this address to the nation. Translator dear french citizens, we are here today together in respect to the future of our country, the last week in france have troubled the nation. There was legitimate claims, however there is a chain of inadmissible violence. Reporter he talked about that violence as being unacceptable behavior, his line where there is violence, the freedom stops. He did give those specific rescinding of the gas tax that caused all of this protest, or at least started it anyway. A small increase in minimum wage, a cut in taxes on bonuses and overtime and an easing in taxes for retirees. There was an apology, sort of. Maybe i gave the impression i didnt care, he said, thats not true. Maybe i hurt some of you, and that was not my intention. We were speaking to a few folks in france affidavit address happened, including the editor of a magazine. And the reviews are this good may be helping to tamp down the violence, but maybe not enough. Again, the specifics, they were impressive. There were a few surprising ones. He said his Prime Minister would detail it on tuesday. At the same time, though, he is hard at doing the emotive thing. Its difficult for him to reach out to the people. So the apologies and the the small stories about old people and single people, a little bit came off a little bit strained. The decision is from the folks ive talked to there should be some tamping of the violence and thats a good thing. The british Prime Minister theresa may has postponed parliaments vote on her brexit deal to leave the European Union. This was unexpected. She said lawmakers would have voted it down by a significant margin, and that would have been a real disaster for her politically. Britains original vote to leave the eu in the summer of 2016 was decided by just a few percentage points. And the analysts say if the uk does drop out without a deal in place, that could trigger a broad recession. We saw stocks here in the u. S.
