Yesterday, i guess, a group of House Republicans put out a plan to deal with kak da and do things not daca but not under the umbrella. Was that helpful, not helpful to getting to a deal ultimately, the president wish that they, you know, take that off the table so that you can focus on what might be happening with senator flake or others in the senate . Secretary sanders this is a great starting point, a great place even though it went beyond the parameters that the president very specifically and then you later shannon he outlined the things he felt he had to be included, not just what could be included. This is a good starting point. Part negotiation process. If we can get everything done, thats better than getion part of it done. Were okay with getting a deal done as long as it falls into the parameters the president laid out. He understands adding the extra things are what makes whats that the potential to make it more difficult, various constituencies think of those things as poison pills secretary sanders thats why its called negotiation, everybody puts everything on the table they want. You figure out what you arent willing to give up, you try come out with everybody winning. Thats what we hope to do both republicans, democrats, the house and the senate. We have laid out the nonnegotiateables for us, and move forward in the process. Do you think you can do that by the next week or so . There were reports, i understand, that ryan and oconnell are not together on issues relating gram grags. Secretary sanders were having conversations about it, it is important policy to look at. Right now, our focus primarily is on the budget. And secondary is getting the deal done, in regards to immigration, on daca, Border Security. Most likely, moving on to infrastructure from there. Now, many lawyers said that was an unusual statement because all libel laws are at the state leferl and not the federal level. The president is frustrated with the misreporting and fake news that is regularly taking place. He is tired of the medias obsession over recent fictitious book on the president and hiS Administration. He thinks that when things like that happen there should be some action of recourse. Secretary sanders the president still strongly believes this is one of the worst deals of all time and one of the single greatest is that its restrictions leave iran free in the future to openly develop their Nuclear Program and rapidly achieve a Nuclear Weapons breakout capability. Theyre saying the president s tweet this morning was in your view not at all confusing and not at all contradictory . You think it was an accurate statement any want to be clear. There have been other states pointing to the reason the administration gave for getting florida saying theyre not they would like to be exempt. How is exempting florida from the ban anything other, in critics view, than giving a political favor to white house allies in a key Battle Ground state . Secretary sanders look, the president is a massive advocate for america not just being Energy Independent but being energy dominant, its part of the process is the offshore drilling. Thats why its opened up for public comment. These will continue to be negotiations. Well continue to look for places and ways that we can make america more energy dominant. Thats why weve opened up drilling in anwar, keystone pipeline, cut a lot of jobkilling regulations that have to do with that. It appears that not everybody is on board and the white house moments ago said a deal has not been reached. President trump this week told lawmakers he would sign legislation to protect the dreamers. We have an agreement that were Bipartisan Group, the six of us, were shopping among our colleagues. We dont want to release details until we talk to more of our colleagues. One senator not impressed, arkansas senator tom cotton. 2013 democrats seemed so interested in Border Security. They talked about it hour, important it was, all of them voted for a bill for 700 million of Border Security. Now it seems like they dont care about Border Security at all. Can you understand, what the difference is . Theres been a shift in democratic elite opinion. In 2006 Chuck Schumer and barack obama and joe biden and Hillary Clinton all voted for the secure fents act. And here we are, 12 years later, dont that have deal. There seems to be strong resistance. What do you think it is, what do you think it is, is it simply just trying to play politics and deny the president a victory . Ill let the democrats speak for themselves. None of them will talk to us. Most americans realize that part of securing the border is a physical barrier. Call it a waum, call it a fence, it has to be supplemented by Border Patrol agents and technology. Thats part of the negotiations right now. Has to include a physical barrier. Senate democratic senator Chuck Schumer saying a deal on daca, the children brought to the country with their parents, is close. The House Democratic leaders sounded supportive, noting the president wants a deal. He supports the dreamers, daca, he calls it, thats okay. And wants to have some Border Security. We all know we have a responsibility to secure our borders. If we can find our Common Ground there. Its all possible. I think people have good will coming together on both sides, both houses of congress on get the job done. It is important to note if and when theres agreement in the senate that does not guarantee passage in the house. There is still plenty of work ahead. Trace . A lot of work ahead. The president said that he appreciated as they were talking about a bipartisan fashion but when he looked at the plan he said they have a long way to go. I talked to a number of people throughout the administration during the day today about the difference between the tweet that the president sent out first thing this morning and then what seemed to be a cleanup on aisle 702 later on when the president tweeted out that he was, of course, supporting the 702 protections and going after people, foreign targets overseas. I put that question to sarah Huckabee Sanders today, who said, what are you talking about . Listen here. Can you tell us why his first tweet sparked off a flurry of activity and phone calls. Secretary sanders im not sure about the flurry of activity. Again, to us that,s a pretty normal day. Were always engaged with members on the hill, members of our staff. A lot of people, many of them on capitol hill, who had no idea what the president was talking about this morning and a lot of people here at the white house who have been selling hard this idea of renewing 702 authority, who also had no idea what he was talking about. B. , you heard that back and forth, whether intended or not, this clearly caused some confusion but the white house says no, absolutely perfectly clear, if you read them in context its clear. What do you make of it . Well, i think john is right, its clear that it was, i like the like about cleanup on aisle 702. The president correcting himself. He has made statements on twitter without being briefed and had to do a cleanup or others on his staff doing it for him. When this kind ofning occurs you often see this denial from whether its sean spicer in the past or now sarah Huckabee Sanders at the microphone, pretending it was all making sense and consistent. When it obviously wasnt. Trace but there is a point to be made, a. B. , in the parent the president has said he is concerned about the civil lib tirs of americans liberties of americans and wends into the fisa bill. There is a little bit of truth to the confusion. He needs to make it much more clear. He needs to discern between what is the legal capture of conversations, that foreign nonu. S. Citizens are having overseas, we have reason to be capturing those conversations. And what he is concerned with. And he obviously jumped to a conclusion that made it sound like he was opposing the renewal of the program. Thats why you had the concern on capitol hill and probably capitols around the country i mean around the world. Trace this White House Briefing was pretty wide in scope, Steve Mnuchin, ended with Sarah Sanders. A lot of talk about immigration, about this daca bill, and jeff flake and his people saying we think we have a deal on this daca bill, then everybody in line started shooting it down. I was telling john roberts earlier, no surprise that jeff flake and the white house are on opposite pages. But this was, i mean, pretty stark contrast. Right. This issue is so tough. Obviously the president deserves credit for earlier this week bringing both sides together in an open conversation that was captured on camera for people with different viewpoints to try to come to a compromise. He said he would sign anything that they agreed to in the house and the senate between both parties. We are not there, as Mike Emmanuel said, were really look agent a lot of different factions in the congress between the parties, within the parties, congressman labrador and goodlatte are not on the same page as senator flake and senator graham are. Just because a group in the senate comes up with something they can agree to doesnt mean it gets the votes on the house side. Democrats are sounding like the statements from nancy pelosi, the democratic leader in the house, very con sill friday, as though they want to get to a solution. But theres tremendous pressure on the left to make this a Big Government shutdown standoff and to not give on something that could actually be described as a border wall or fence. I dont think were close to the end yet. I think they dont know where the votes are going to come from. And just because a group of rs and ds come together and find something they think sounds great doesnt mean itll be blessed by the leadership in both parties, both chambers, and President Trump who has gone on to a few separate positions, questions of the fence and wall in the past few days, himself. Trace i have to ask you for your take on this, there were a lot of questions about iran, about the sanctioning on iran, tend to be confusing. The sanctions that Steve Mnuchin was talking about and Sarah Sanders, they arent with the nuclear deal, not to do with the big Bank Sanctions that really hurt iran. These are sanctions about human rights violations, nothing on do with the actual nuclear agreement. Is that right . Yeah, theyre looking at extending the sanctions of relief and applying pressure on the iranians by bringing new punishment, new sanctions for icbm testing. If theres Ballistic Missile testing in the future they would have to come under sanctions for that. They want to sort of keep the agreement in place and keep going. Not break up the deal. John kor in this case, republican whip in the senate part of the other group working, john cornyn, the group empaneled by the president of the United States working on this deal, he said you dont need six, you need 60 votes to break a filibuster. You need to get bipartisan buyin on both sides of the aisle, get a lot of republicans onboard here. Thats going to be the problem. I went to tom tillis from north carolina, when we were hearing rumblings that there may be a deal, he said theyre wrong. This is going to take a while to sort out. Trace im confused, chad, youre saying even the six plan to pitch to it the larger body. If theyre planning to pitch it up the chain that would mean theyre admits there is not a deal, right . We dont know what the details r theyre saying there is a deal in principle among the six. They have been working with john kelly. People kind of riding in both cars here. Again, the key is to get buyin by republican senators.
