Other key states but donald trump says there was voter fraud elsewhere that hurt him, and he says nothings going to change. Also the president elect on the potential changes to our cuba policy after the death of the dictator, fidel castro. Were live in havana, so lets get to it. First from the news deck this afternoon, the suspect police say rammed a car into students at ohio state, then slashed victims with a butcher knife, was an 18yearold somali refugee and a legal permanent resident of the united states. Thats what Law Enforcement sources close to the investigation tell fox news. They also stress that the motive is unclear. The fbi is helping with the case and that investigators are looking into potential ties to terrorists. Just looking. Those sources say investigators are now contacting the suspects relatives and other people who knew him. Hospital Officials Say nine people were hurt in the attack and that nine none of their injuries is life threatening. Police say it all started this morning when a car jumped a curb and ran into a group of students in a courtyard outside of watts hall on the north side of campus. The suspect then got out of that vehicle with the butcher knife and started cutting people, sending students running. Police say a campus officer was nearby and that that officer shot and killed the suspect after about one minute. An image from twitter shows somebody identified as the suspect on the ground, although fox news cannot confirm this. According to the campus i should say the Columbus Dispatch newspaper, students had been gathered in that courtyard because somebody had reported a chemical leak in the building. They pulled the fire alarm. That happens to be why the Police Officer who did the shooting was so close by. The newspaper reports the suspects car struck one victim so hard she flew into the air. The attack triggered an enormous response from police and s. W. A. T. Teams. University Emergency Management officials sent out a text and a tweet telling students there was an active shooter and telling them to run, hide and fight. The first alert just said stay safe, run, hide. Then we got a report there was an active shooter on campus. You never think something is going to happen. Its mind blowing. The most tragic thing that you can imagine happening to a school, especially after, you know, like a big weekend like we just had, thanksgiving and everything. It had been School Officials gave the all clear there about an hour and a half after the aattack. Lets get to rob schmidt. Law enforcement sources tell fox news the attacker was a somaliborn 18yearold who came to the u. S. As a refugee and was granted legal permanent status. He was shot to death by a Police Officer in the midst of that attack. His motive, however, and possible ties to terror do remain unknown at this point. Campus police say just before 10 00 this morning the young man intentionally drove his vehicle into a crowd of students right outside of watts hall. Calls came into 911 reporting an accident but the suspect jumped out of the car and started attacking people with a butcher knife. The campus went into lockdown. Students were told to run, hide and fight as a last resort. Students not in danger were told to shelter in place. A remarkably Quick Response from the hero Police Officer in all of this could be the reason no students have been killed. Police say within one minute of the call to help for 911 that officer arrived at the scene and shot and killed the knifewielding suspect as he attacked those defenseless students going to and from their monday morning classes. I know we have some updates on those students. What do they tell you . Incredibly nobody was killed, nine taken to the hospital, one in critical condition. That student is the worst off, the other eight in stable. Watts hall houses materials, science, engineering schools at ohio state. The campus has about 60,000 students. On the north side of columbus. The police chief, kim jacob, said the motive for this horrible attack is still the big mystery. Every aspect of this investigation will be mulled over. Weve got our federal partners, state partners and local to try to identify any potential motive behind this attack. Its a terrifying story but one of the positives is the preparedness of campus police. Police ending the threat within a minute of arrival. Wed love more information about him, we havent gotten it yet. Terrorism has not been ruled out. Thanks very much, terrorism not ruled out. Theres a very large somali population there in the columbus area. There are a lot of somali students on campus. Truly whether this was related in any way to terror or anything else, at this point we do not know. Anthony is a student at ohio state. He was in the middle of a lecture when he heard the sounds. Anthony, what did it sound like . Hi. What did it sound like when you were in that lecture . So we were in a building right down the street from it. We heard a couple of pops and then a lot of sirens and a lot of action from the police. Everyone just kind of looked at each other confused and then almost immediately from that we all got the text message from the buckeye alert telling us there was an active shooter on campus. What did the people inside the room do then . The professor was the only one who didnt seem to get the text so we all looked at each other at once and we interrupted her talking and we said we just got this alert. She acted quickly to make sure that we had the door locked and drew the blinds down on the windows. And then we all, you know, kind of started checking our phones and getting our computers out and stuff. How can were you guys in there sort of sheltering in place as i guess they put it on campus . I think the first text came in just before 10 00 and they didnt lift our shelter in place until after 11 00, 11 30 or so. Its my understanding you may have known somebody who was a victim here . No, i do not. I have a friend who was supposed to be in that building this morning at 9 00 a. M. But fortunately for him his class got cancelled. And the Columbus Dispatch news is reporting one of the victims is a professor. Correct, yeah. My fleriend, jackson peck, said hes in met lurj cal engineering with that professor and he confirmed that it was him that had gotten hurt. Im curious, anthony, if you know, and you may not, the professor is outside. Is that because of this report of a gas leak or why was a professor outside when this guy jumped a curb in the first place, do you know . I do not know. There were a lot of reports about a fire alarm being triggered. Whether it was intentionally done by the attacker, there were a lot of reports swirling around campus and rumors that for whatever reason there were people out crowded in front of the building and that may have been why there were fire trucks immediately after it happened. Anthony, im glad youre well, thanks very much. We can report here that that did happen. There was a report of a leak on campus at this very building where this vehicle jumped the curb. A fire alarm had been pulled. Was there a leak . The Fire Department had gotten there and was checking on that. Thats the reason the Police Officer who did the shooting was there. Andrew wells huggins is leading a. P. s coverage on the story. Thats one of the things we dont know yet. Was there really a leak or sdid somebody set this up so police and fire would be there. Do we know that yet . We dont know. Obviously the biggest question and thats what we were hearing when we got on the scene, multiple students were telling us about this fire alarm. Its clear from what authorities were telling us as far as we know they lifted the alert on campus and so theres no other suspect at large that were aware of. That would seem to indicate it might have been two different events and the fact that there was a reported leak led to that officer being right on the scene. We havent gotten the official word yet if that leak was legitimate. Andrew, but that is the reason the First Responders were there in the first place, otherwise this might not have ended so quickly because this officer that pulled the trigger, its my understanding, did so with he had been there for that reason. Is that true . Yeah, thats our understanding. I think that shows you both what fortunate coincidence can get you and also the fact that campus is pretty alert to these kinds of things. The buckeye alert that went out immediately told students to run, hide and fight. Thats the standard protocol for active shooters now. Ohio state has had that as its approach for some time and in fact put out a training video recently for students about that. Run if you can, hide if you cant and fight if you must. One more thing, this suspect, we know hes an 18yearold student. We know he had been given permanent residency in the united states. We know hes from somalia. Beyond that, do we know anything about him . Were still trying to gather information about him. Theres a meeting later today about Community Members in the Muslim Community and were hoping to find out more at that point. At this point everything is happening so quickly, we dont know exactly who he was or what his motive was. People want to jump to conclusions and you should guard against that. As the authorities have told us, you could have one person mad at another person and that could be the beginning and end of all of this or it could be something more complicated. That said, im curious if you know of any previous problems on campus of this nature . No. This is the first incident theres been on campus other than a couple of years ago there was an employee who killed a couple of other people and then shot himself. It was a murdersuicide, obviously a huge event on campus, but theres been absolutely nothing like this on or around ohio state campus. Good enough. Were working on an identity of this student. We believe we have it right, but because of situations as they are, were going to hold off. I dont see how it serves anybody to get out there with a name and it be wrong. I could tell you, andrew, thank you very much. Leading the coverage for the Associated Press is the reporter andrew welshhuggins. Were waiting to find out a couple of things, more on this suspect and, further, was this thing with the fire alarm that had the Police Officer there in the beginning, was that part of something bigger . Was it a separate and isolated incident . All these things are going to matter and matter in a big way as the investigation continues, at least for people there at osu. When we have that information, well come in with it. Were also expecting further updates from the scene. Police have promised it and when we have it, well take you there. First, the trump teams transition plan. The question now, could the president elects former rival and heated rival, mitt romney, really wind up with a prime position in Donald Trumps cabinet . Buckle up, its going to be a busy week. Thats what the Vice President elect, mike pence, said on this is way into trump tower this morning. This just happens to be the scene as people are chatting it up with Kellyanne Conway, the Senior Advisor to the president elect. Shes been just sort of literally chatting it up with people out there. She hasnt held anything formal, but Kellyanne Conway is very much in the news today in a way that a Senior Advisor to a president elect, i dont think, and ive looked this up and checked memory and all that, i dont think any Senior Advisor to a president elect has ever been in the news in this way. President elect trump is holding highprofile meetings as he tries to piece together the rest of his cabinet picks. Sean spicer says trump is meeting with retired general David Petraeus and tennessee senator bob corker today. And mitt romney tomorrow. All possible con teshtenders fo secretary of state. But the Senior Advisor whos live on the rim and right now shes taking pictures inside trump tower, Kellyanne Conway, whom we all have seen throughout the campaign, Kellyanne Conway bashed the former Massachusetts Governor on multiple sunday shows yesterday, saying Trump Supporters would feel betrayed if mitt romney got one of the top spots in the administration. Its just breath taking the type of messages i receive from all over the country. And im just me, im not donald trump. So just as his former campaign manager, the number of people who feel betrayed to think that a governor romney would get the most prominent cabinet post after he went so far out of his way to hurt donald trump. He hurt donald trump. Thats what she said. Mitt romney, of course, is one of the president elects loudest critics during his campaign. He called donald trump a phony and a fraud. Trump fired back calling mitt romney a choker, who walks like a penguin. So whats going on here . Is there some sort of coordinated team trump effort to put romney in his place or some highlevel staffers, specifically Kellyanne Conway, going rogue or what is this . Peter doocy is live at trump tower here in manhattan. Whos defending romney on trumps Transition Team . Im trying to figure out if theyre ganging up on him, if theyre readying us for something. Do you know . Reporter tell you what, shep, the defenders or defender has been a lot quieter than the advocates for romney but the person whos sticking up for him is the incoming chief of staff Reince Priebus who is doing his best now to try and talk about, talk up the pluses of having an opposing voice in the cabinet room. Priebus is also trying to downplay these reports about bickering behind closed doors by Transition Team members who just are not sure if they can work alongside this 2012 nominee that worked against them for the entire course of the primary. It isnt a matter of warfare. Theres a lot of opinions about this. Yes, it is sort of a team of rivals concept if you were to go toward the governor romney concept. But i think that should tell all americans about where president elects head is at, which is a place that will put the best possible people together for all americans. Reporter Kellyanne Conway, whos hanging out in the lobby of trump tower right now, said this weekend the Transition Team still doesnt even know if mitt romney voted for donald trump on november 8th, but the former governor is one of the rare callbacks for a second meeting with the president elect. Thats happening tomorrow, shep. Then theres the matter of David Petraeus, the general who well, i mean whos accused of giving secrets to his mistress as she wrote a book. I mean hes meeting with David Petraeus for what and when and what do we know about it . Reporter as usual, the Transition Team playing coy about exactly why they are calling certain people in and for what. But general petraeus just a few days ago did tell bbc radio that he would serve in an administration with mr. Trump because the way he sees things, if the commander in chief asks you to do something, the only answer in his eyes is yes, mr. President. Its not clear if petraeus and romney are competing for the same job. Trump could be trying to bring them both on. Neither one supportive of the gop nominee during the primaries, but senator bob corker was. Hes an interesting job seeker because he would bring to the cabinet experience as the Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman and he was also an ally of trump this summer when very new prominent republicans were. Corker also coming here tomorrow. Jeff. Peter doocy outside trump tower in new york. Thanks. Ready for a recount . The green partys jill stein is. The green party nominee, jill stein, made it official today filing for a statewide recount in the state of pennsylvania. Stein has raised more than 6 million to pay for that recount and others that shes proposing in michigan and wisconsin. Wisconsin Officials Say they believe a recount will come back with the same result as election day, a trump victory. They also rejected steins request to recount all the votes by hand, saying theyll let each county decide by its own rules how they do it. You may heard the vote of michigan has been left out of the total since election day, hasnt been certified. Well today officials in michigan Just Announced donald trump wins the state of michigan by fewer than 11,000 votes, keeping him the first republican to win that state in 28 years. The Stein Campaign reports it will file on wednesday for a recount in michigan. Now, the president elect today called this whole recount effort a scam. Yesterday he claimed he would have won the National Popular vote had millions of people not voted illegally. Fox news has found no evidence to support trumps claim and reports today that trumps tweet of illegal voting is not true. Carl cameron live in washington. Carl, the source for the untrue illegal voting claim, was that the conspiracy theorist alex jones . I havent seen that claim anywhere else but that conspiracy site. Info wars was a prominent presence at a lot of the trump rallies during the course of the campaign. In terms of Research Groups there hasnt been anything since the election took place. Pew research, for instance, put together a whole list of potential voting fraud areas to watch out, sort of red flags, but that was all about the election. And in every state where trump has complained that there was widespread voting fraud, including virginia, california and new hampshire, Election Officials have said huhuh, no such presence of it, shep. We now know he officially won michigan which puts trump over 300 in the delegate count. 306. Michigan could still be rktd and jill stein is pushing very hard. She raised 6. 2 million to pay for these recounts, which is required by state law. In pennsylvania she has a huge, huge task. Today is the deadline to file for a recount. Now, in pennsylvania the requirements are just ridiculously difficult. Almost to the point where some candidates might call the system rigged. You have to get at least three voters in each of the more than 9,190 precincts to download an affidavit, fill it out, take it to a notary public, sign it so its stamped and certified by the notary. Then take it down to the county Clerks Office and they have to certify it. Only then with that massive number of affidavits can a recount be approved. So jill stein has petitioned the court to give her more time to meet that deadline. In wisconsin today, the election Board Certified the possibility of there being a recount, but they denied jill steins demand for a hand recount saying that it would be left up to the local officials in each of the different voting areas which means they still have some time to do it. There will be the possibility of a recount as well in michigan. Michigan doesnt have to be decided until wednesday, but there the board of elections could deny jill steins request for a recount. And once she does actually make it, then donald trump gets a week to contest and argue against it and its entirely possible that the michigan would just say no to jill steins request outright. Those are the only three states still in play here. Across the board, democrats and republicans alike involved in election management and oversight have said there just isnt evidence of widespread voter fraud. There have been some mistakes, some problems in small instances, but its very, very small and n change the outcome. Carl cameron, thank you. Some sort of voter fraud in the dozens maybe, not in the hundreds or thousands and certainly not millions. Coming up continuing coverage of our top two stories. The attack at Ohio State University. Half past the hour and time to get back to our top story and the attack at the Ohio State University. Two Law Enforcement sources confirm to fox news that investigators have identified the suspect as Abdul Ali Artan as people knew him on campus. He was an 18yearold somali refugee who was a legal permanent resident and he is or was, and investigators are looking into the possibility of ties to terrorism. We say this only because they have nothing on motive at this point and are trying to figure out exactly what did happen here so havent ruled it out. Police say the suspect rammed his car into a group of students outside a campus building. Then got out and started slashing people with a butcher knife. Nine people ended up in the hospital. Police say an officer shot and killed the attacker. Garrett tenney has made his way to campus and is live on scene. Garrett, to you. Reporter yeah, shep. The biggest question now that we have a name, the question is why. What would cause him to drive his car over a curb into a crowd of students and pull out a butcher knife and begin to stab and slash his way through that group of students. Ver investigators are beginning to reach out to his family members and relatives to try to get more information about him, on his background, to get a better picture of who this person is and what may have driven him to this. We also know here on ohio states campus, this is where it took place. You can see theres police tape all up and down this block and around this area. It is in between these two buildings back through there where this courtyard is where were told he drove his car over that curb and into that crowd of students. You mentioned the fbi has not ruled out any possible motives at this point and they are looking at terrorism as a potential motive. But again, still no indication that that is the case. Were also told at this point there are no signs that artan was on any type of terror watch list in terms of travel and whatnot. Now, we are told the injuries could have been significantly worse if it werent for the Quick Response of a campus Police Officer. Within one minute of these calls coming in he was there on the scene and engaged artan and took him down. We are told there are nine injuries, one of them remains in critical condition. We are expecting to get an update on the status of those injured in this attack here in the next half hour or so. Garrett, while you were in transit and during the last hour here on fox news, there was a News Conference and it was very interesting. A reporter asked one of the spokespeople did this suspect say anything as police were confronting him. Remember, he ran over the curb, ran over the students, got out of the car, began stabbing people. There was a Police Officer nearby who had been there because somebody pulled a fire alarm and there was a report of a gas leak. We still dont know if that was real or part of whatever this was. And they asked the spokesperson did he say anything . And the spokesperson did say no, he didnt say anything, didnt say i dont have that information but said thats part of an ongoing investigation. So that leads us to believe that either he didnt know or maybe the guy said something that was going to be crucial to the investigation. We can imagine the litany of things he might save that might give people on scene an idea of what happened there. Whether he said something or not is a matter of high interest around here. I wonder if youve heard anything more on that, garrett . Reporter we havent, shep. We have seen from students around here for the most part who are still very much in shock, they say this is a surreal experience, you see this on tv, you never expect it to happen at your university. Thats what theyre living there now. As soon as this happened, we have seen and heard various accounts from students as to exactly what took place. Thats typical in this type of situation that the details are hard to get through and thats what they are starting to go through, piecing together all of the stories and various details. Its possible there could be more there but were not ready to report at this time anything because we want to make sure we get these facts right. Garrett tenney made his way to campus for us. Again, the name of the suspect weve now confirmed once again is Abdul Razak Ali artan. Permanent rez nansidency had be granted. A student at the school, 18 years old. What he said when he got out of the car before the Police Officer shot and killed him according to authorities remains unknown. His motive unknown. Updates as soon as we get them. A lot of people are praising the fast and professional response, including the governor, john kasich, said the coordinated attack prevented more people from getting involved. The alert system has been around for a while and theres a training video that goes with it but this year the whole system was upgraded to get the message out by text, by twitter, other social media. But before any single student was notified on their cell phone, the system was designed so that the emergency message actually pops up on the teachers powerpoint screen in class. In one classroom the teacher and the students thought the message was a prank. As for the instructions we have talked about so much, the run, the hide, the fight, some students were on twitter asking what that means. Its the department of homeland securitys mantra which is run first, hide second and last resort fight back. We saw pictures of many students piling chairs and desks against the doors to barricade themselves in. By the time students got the messages on their phones, the whole attack was over with. Less than a minute from over the curb to dead on the street. The universitys Public Safety director who has been on the job less than a month says the emergency call came in at 9 52. Yes, by 9 53 the officer radioed out that shots were fired and thats when the University Police shot and killed the suspect. It was two full minutes after that when the first buckeye alert went out and Police Officers from across the country started arriving. We know two days ago was the big ohio state Michigan Football game and today ohio state won that game but today michigans Football Department sent out a tweet telling them to stay safe. The news continues right after this. 17 minutes before the hour. Thousands of people lining up to pay respects to fidel castro in cuba. A live look now in cuba where people are making their way through the citys revolution square. Mourners will sign an oath promising to carry out the, quote, concept of revolution, unquote. Of course fidel castro stepped down from the presidency back in 2006 over health issues. The ruthless dictator ruled the country over half a century. He built a regime that denied people basic Political Freedoms. His government imprisoned, tortured and murdered people using a firing squad to carry out thousands of executions. Some images as the world reacts to the dictators death. This is workers hanging a giant banner with a picture of a Young Fidel Castro and here another look at the line of crowds. This is today. You can see it all the way down the street and around the corner. Here you can see people waiting to enter revolution square to pay their respects. Another look at the honor guard, soldiers marching during a service today. So thats havana. This is Little Havana down in miami and a whole different thing there, very different reaction. Big crowds dancing in the streets over the weekend. Miami, of course, and south florida home to many tens of thousands of cuban refugees. You can see the cover of the miami herald with the headline castro is dead. Earlier today president elect donald trump threatened to scrap the u. S. cuba deal. He tweeted if cuba is unwilling to make a better deal for the cuban people, the cuban American People and the u. S. As a whole, i will terminate the deal. It will be a major reversal of president obamas plan to improve relations. Some republicans have called for a tougher deal, but the wall street journal reports donald trump could face pushback from u. S. Companies, including airlines, hotels, cell phone carriers, on and on, ones that have invested a lot of money in cuba already. With us is john bussey, associate editor at the requew street journal. I wondered where does this go because businesswise were pretty well locked in. Thats right. The Business Community is a powerful influence in political decisions, and they are already getting involved with cuba. As you pointed out, hotel Opera Companies that are ranging for roaming ability for your cell phone if you go to cuba. Ag interests, a lot of rural states want places where there are large farms and agricultural exports want to be into cuba. They dont want to cede to the european you know union or lati, they want to sell their products there. The thinking was we had done the same thing under i think nine different president s for 50 years and it hadnt worked at all. Right. And as the president put it, hes like why continue to do something if it doesnt work. Lets do something new. Lets try bringing in the openness of this nation and see if that doesnt speed things up. Really having access to the outside world has helped a lot. Thats right. And that was by executive order on obamas part. Of course the new president can reverse all that by executive order, so this is easily undone if donald trump wishes to do so. And youre right, this was the argument. Decades of embargo havent changed things in cuba, still political prisoners, still firing squads, still repression for religious and economic freedoms in cuba. Perhaps if be go the route of our work with china, our work with vietnam, a place that we had a war with and normalized relationships with, so too with china, maybe that will work to change things in cuba. Certainly the Business Community is going to continue to advocate. In the case of china shall it was the Business Community that did a lot of the work politically to get china into the wto so i wouldnt underestimate that influence in how donald trump makes his decision. The biggest change over the last ten years since fidel stepped down as dictator or president and gave it over to raul, you dont have these fiery speeches anymore. It doesnt matter your political thoughts on castro, he was certainly all that hes made out to be. But as a political orator, few would match him. Long speeches. They came to be known as castro speeches. Hours on end. Look, another thing thats changed is the demographics of florida. A politically very important state for national leaders. The anticastro Cuban Community has been staunchly anticastro. It has been a community that has made its views known and donald trump very much responded to in the course of the campaign. But that demographic is also changing.
